Principal’s Report Hi all and welcome to our final newsletter for the term and my final principal report as Principal of Illawarra Sports High School. Words cannot encapsulate the pride I feel in our
school and its achievements over the last six years. I have been privileged to work side by side with a dedicated staff, outstanding students and a caring and supportive parent/carer community who are largely united in a common aim of ensuring students achieve their best at school.
I would like to thank our small but dedicated Parents and Helpers group who meet once a month at the school, provide me with such honest and proactive feedback on our school, and provide suggestions for further improvement. I will very much miss their support, sense of humour and enthusiasm.
At my last whole, school assembly this week, I talked to the students about the importance of having pride and confidence in themselves and in their school. We have a lot to be proud of and I am a firm believer in this quote by Henry Ford: “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right”.
Self-confidence is a powerful thing and I hope we can instil this confidence in every young person who joins our community.
I am confident that the school will continue to thrive under the new leadership of Mr Hampton and wish him and the Illawarra Sports High community the very best in the future.

School Facilities
This month we have been very busy around the school.
We have organised for the delivery and order of the new soccer posts for our field. The soccer posts will be set up over the holidays. The irrigation works for the soccer field will be undertaken in the school holidays as well which will see the grass on the field looking lush. The school has organised to purchase a new pump and put in a temporary irrigation system until we can install a fully automated system over the Christmas/New Year period. We will be digging trenches along the edge of the field and will have a lot of soil left over. If anybody is interested in obtaining some clean fill for free, please call the front office and we will arrange a pick-up time. The clean fill will not be available until after the holidays.
Our wonderful General Assistant, Rob Murray has been very busy organising all the local repairs around the school. Rob has spent a lot of work ensuring the removal of graffiti, tackling the problem when it first arises. Rob spends a lot of time ensuring that our school grounds are always kept in good condition for our students.
We have finalised our Autism classroom and it will be ready to go for the start of Term 2. There will be vinyl installed around the sink area in the classroom and then the students can move in on their first day back.
Tree removal from behind the library will take place shortly. The tree is has died and will be cut down. The mulch from the tree will be used to put on the school gardens.
We have had a number of few issues with intruders around the school grounds after hours. We have been meeting with school security and upgrading our security measures. We do have a lot of outside people hiring out our gym and Saturday school attendance, so if you notice anyone on the school grounds who shouldn't be, please call 1300 880 021 to report.

Upcoming Fundraiser
CUA School Colour Fun Run
As mentioned in our previous newsletter, the SRC with the help of our teachers are
holding a CUA School Colour Fun-Run in conjunction with this year’s School Cross
Country as a major fundraising event this year! The event will be held on Thursday
12th April (the second last day of the term). This is a sponsorship-based fundraiser,
and we are looking to raise as much money as possible.
Sponsorship letters and forms were sent home with students a few weeks ago, students who raise $10 or more will receive a reward, and the more money you raise the better the reward, and the more you help the school! Unfortunately, we are unable to access online fundraising this year as we have recently switched over to the new Department payment system.
The CUA School Fun-Run is a healthy fundraiser that we hope you will get behind. The event sends the right message to students about having fun while being healthy, all while helping the school raise funds.
All money raised must be returned to the school by FRIDAY 4TH MAY (end of Week 1, Term 2)
Ordering Prizes – ALL PRIZES MUST BE ORDERED ONLINE
Prizes MUST be ordered between the FRIDAY 4TH MAY (end of Week 1, Term 2) and Friday 11th May (end of Week 2, Term 2). Simply visit schoolfundraising.com.au to create / log into your Profile Page between these dates. Then click on the ‘CLAIM YOUR PRIZE’ button and follow the prompts. If you have any questions, please contact the CUA School Fun-Run team on 1800 FUN RUN and they will gladly assist!
We are looking for all students to participate as we are running it as part of the School Cross Country and hope this will motivate more students to participate. If you have any questions about the Colour Fun-Run, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Elouera Today we had a visit from Officer Scott Burgess to talk to our Elouera students on
illicit drugs, cyber safety and possession of pornographic material and the
consequences.
English - Elouera In English this term, Year 11 Elouera students studied “Hana’s Suitcase”, a true story about a young Jewish girl who was a victim of the Holocaust. Inspired by Hana’s mysterious suitcase, the class set about to create their own “Mystery Box” of sources that reflect their life right now and over the period of their childhood up to the present.

HOW CYBERSMART ARE YOU?
Your digital footprint
It is great to share things online with your friends. Part of the fun of sharing videos, images and other content, is that many people can view and respond. Remember that others who you do not know may also view what you share with your friends. They may also be able to look at it for years to come. Everything you post adds up to make your digital footprint and, once it’s online, it could be there forever. So think before you post.
Tips
· Keep your personal details private. Use an appropriate nickname instead of your real name. Ask your parents before giving anyone on the internet your name, address, phone number or any other personal details.
Do not share your username or password with anyone.
Think before you hit send or post. Once posted, it can be difficult to remove content.
Do not post anything you don't want others to know or find out about—or that you would not say to them face to face.
Remember that private images and videos you send to friends or post on a social networking site may be passed on to others and uploaded to public sites.
Be respectful of other people’s content that you post or share. For example, a photo that your friend took is their property, not yours. You should post it online only if you have their permission and make a note about where you got it from.
** IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS ABOUT YOUR DIGITAL FOOTPRINT, PLEASE SPEAK TO A TRUSTED ADULT.

The project ISH mini murals group has the opportunity to enhance their learning from a visiting practicing artist and ex-Illawarra Sports High School student Gillian Dinh. Gill has started her own business The Marker by Gillian Dinh and last year she was invited to paint two murals as part of the Wonderwalls Festival in Wollongong. Gillian spoke passionately about her art journey so far and her recent work as a mural artist. Her presentation helped consolidate the students’ learning so far. She took the time to look at their journals and provide advice and feedback. Gill can’t wait to be invited back to the showcase next term to see the finished murals. We are very proud to have the help of the very talented Gillian Dinh on our mural journey.

Study Hub 2018 has seen the commencement of the B16 Study Hub for Year 12 students. An
exciting initiative. The Hub operates across the Year 12 timetable, providing a quiet
and structured learning environment.
The Hub is outfitted with sixteen desktops computers, study nooks and a small
collaborative space for HSC related workshops and seminars. A printer is also on
hand for students’ needs.
The Hub is manned by Mr. Melville, who is also the Rugby League co-ordinator. As
Mr. Melville explained, “the objective is quality. Everything I ask of the students in my
time overseeing their study periods is about that. We provide a disciplined
environment in which the students can work free of distraction. It is only the start of
the program, but it shows tremendous potential to really impact upon HSC results
and be a point of difference for ISHS”. Mr Mellville

This month on SchoolTV - Physical Activity & Exercise
In the last decade, children's participation in physical activity and exercise has been in decline. In this digital age, children are using computers and mobile devices, not only for learning, but also for relaxation and recreation purposes. This sedentary behaviour is having a detrimental effect on today's youth. The key is finding the balance. Research shows, that regular physical activity and exercise leads to changes in the brain. It improves cognitive function, elevates mood, enhances learning and improves academic outcomes. Playing sport helps kids develop fundamental movement skills impacting positively on their confidence, self-esteem and ability to develop social skills. Parents play an important role in helping children establish positive habits that will benefit them in the long-term. In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will discover practical advice relating to the benefits of regular physical activity and exercise, as well as tips on how to get their kids motivated and moving more. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month's edition and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information.
