It’s good to see students and teachers back with renewed enthusiasm after the break. This is my first week back after 3 weeks in the UK, touring with family. It was a wonderful opportunity to see places and people I’ve never seen before and has given me an appreciation for where my forebears came from. The UK is a beautiful place especially in the rural areas and a very easy place in which to travel. Term 3 is going to be another action packed term with academic, cultural and sporting events. The focus is currently is on Science with a move to Health later in the term. We have the School Production coming up this term and preparation for this is already in full swing. This will be a highlight of the term with our students showing off their performance talents to the community. The Hutt Exchange is coming up next Tuesday. This is a significant annual event on the sports calendar of both Maidstone and Hutt Intermediate. Teams and coaches are prepared and ready to give their best. I look forward to seeing great sportsmanship and some wins! This will be a good opportunity for our Netball Aims Games team to prepare for the Tauranga competition coming up in September. The Aims Games Competition entry is an exciting initiative for our Netballers this year. I do hope you’ve all had the opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss reports and learning at Parent Interviews. It cannot be overstated how important the connections between home and school are to your child’s progress. There has been very positive feedback from teachers. Please note that you can contact your child’s teacher any time you have a question or concern it doesn’t have to wait for parent interviews. Living the school values and focusing on learning will continue to be expected. We ask that students continue to do their very best to progress their learning this term. Nga mihi Mary O’Regan Principal Library News: There has been a ‘murder’ in the Library! Not as dramatic as it sounds … we are running a murder mystery research exercise in the Library over the next three weeks. Students will answer a series of questions, using their research skills, and rearrange the first letters of their answers to investigate the crime. This week, students will discover the name of the victim. Next week, students will find out how the crime was committed and the following week, the murderer will be revealed! All correct entries will be put into a draw in assembly and Maidstone’s Ace Detective will be randomly selected and receive a prize. Whilst it is important for our students to understand how to find information, it is also important to keep them engaged and challenged by doing something ‘different’. So far, this exercise seems to have caught our student’s imagination and they seem to be enjoying this ‘Cluedo’ type activity. From a practical point of view, this work has also given me some idea as to where the ‘gaps’ are in their research methods and this will help to shape future Library programmes. As if this wasn’t enough () I have also set up a Maori Language Challenge in the Library. I have filled a display board with objects and food normally found on a breakfast table. Students have to attach the correct Maori word to the object or food item. Some of our students are quite confident with their Maori language and it has been nice to see those students helping their friends to learn new words. Mrs Asprey Library Manager.

Purple Syndicate News Here in Purple Syndicate we have been very busy. For example in Room 1 we have been working on Planet Earth and Beyond. We started with drawing a map of space and writing down all the facts we knew. Planet Earth and Beyond was great because you could tie it in with any subject. We tied it in with art and maths and it helped us with our researching skills.

In Room 2 we have been working on our maths inquiry by

finding an object and researching it. Then we had to choose a main question that we would work on. We had to write down mathematical questions and everyone in Room 2 had a lot of questions. Room 2 had a fun time researching our questions and making presentations to put up on the wall.

In Room 3 we have been discussing the VCOP Superheroes,

(Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers, Punctuation). All of us are given the task of turning boring and plain sentences into exciting ones. Then we share with the rest of the class. Everyone has had a fun time and enjoyed VCOP a lot. Our next subject in Purple Syndicate is Science. We will doing our inquiry through The Physical World, experimenting, researching and working hard.

Maidstone Production 2015 Our Production is scheduled for week 9, 14-17 September and we are counting down the weeks.. Rehearsals are well underway and a strong cast of 35 Actors and 40 Dancers are forging ahead with a majority of the workload. It is important students keep their weekly schedules close at hand as Sunday rehearsals begin at the end of week 4, August 16. I wish to thank you for supporting our students and ensuring they can attend rehearsals/workshops and also for delivering specified goods to help us with sets and props. The sets and props team have been busy using their creative skills to reshape many of these items. In the next couple of weeks I will be calling on assistance for costume sewing and help with hair and make-up. We are also requiring parent expertise in carpentry and electronics as we have some props that need a skilled tradesman. Thank you for your continued support and hope you are intending on coming to see the Production later this term.

Upcoming visits to Maidstone by year 6 students All contributing schools will be visited early this term by our Principal Mary O’Regan. She will have a presentation to share with Year 6 students about the learning and activities they can experience while at Maidstone. Pupils – usually those who previously attended the primary school, will accompany her and help answer questions from their perspective. Within a couple of weeks of that visit, all year 6 students at our contributing schools are invited to visit Maidstone to experience first-hand, some of the activities shared in the presentation. Those from non-contributing schools come later in the term. We have an exciting programme organised for these students, including the items below.
