Dear parents, caregivers, students and friends of the school Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa

The Arts Maidstone has been taken over by a Wearable Art frenzy! Students are working on some amazing creations. It‘s been great seeing these develop from research and design to actual costumes. There’s an excited buzz as we work towards the WOW evenings. I went to see a group of our students display their Wearable Art creations at last night’s Art Splash event at the Michael Fowler Centre - they did very well and Maidstone can be proud. The Art Works on display at the Michael Fowler centre are also well worth a look with some great work from our young artists. I hope you have managed to have a look, especially if it’s your child with work on display.

Basic Fact-athon A huge thank you to those who have supported the Basic Fact-athon over the last few weeks. The total raised is approximately $11,000. We’ll be acknowledging some outstanding effort at this week’s assembly.

Relieving Teachers The Wellington region is currently experiencing a serious shortage of relievers for Primary and Intermediate schools. This may result in Maidstone being unable to access relievers when required. Our Syndicate Leaders have put plans in place for their syndicates should this be the case. These plans involve splitting classes for the day, which is not desirable, but we are endeavouring to do this with as little disruption as possible should it be necessary.

Behaviour We’ve had several concerning incidents this term with students getting themselves into strife in the community and then bring ing the issues to school. The aggressive behaviour that has followed from a few students has resulted in several stand-downs. We take this behaviour very seriously and are working closely with other agencies in the Upper Hutt community to make sure our students are safe. We ask that you support us by knowing where your children are and what they’re doing at all times. As parents you do a fabulous job in often challenging circumstances. Please know we are here to support you and your children.

AIMS Games Our AIMS Games teams are off to Tauranga next week. We wish them all the best in their competitions. A huge thank you to Liz Moka and the organisers.

Achievement in swimming

Ashford W attended the Wellington Short Course Champs over two weekends in August competing in 12 races. This meet hosted 541 swimmers who all had to gain qualifying times to enter. He achieved 11 personal best times, 3 bronze medals, 3 silver medals and has gained 8 NZ Divisional 2 qualifying times to be held in March next year. This is the most medals Upper Hutt Swimming Club has won in quite some time, let alone by one person. It is also the first time they have had someone qualify for the Div 2 national meet in some years. Very exciting and we'll earnt! Congratulations. Ashford is looking forward to representing the school at AIMS in his favourite sport and is hoping for some personal bests. There are a lot of male entries in his age group and competition will be tough. Good Luck at the Aimes Ashford.

Sports Festival 2016: On the 17th August 25 teams partook in playing in 9 different sports across the Wellington Region as part of the 2016 Sports Festival. This was the first time that Maidstone Intermediate had entered this festival, and the first time that Maidstone had ever entered 176 students into an optional competitive Sporting event. There was much planning and organising to do, but golly I was so excited about giving the children this experience, that it was just part of the package! The Sport Teams played all around Wellington - From the netball courts in Haitaitai, to the Hockey Stadium in Newtown, through to the football fields in Berhampore. Leaving at 8am was a feat - especially for the amount of students going, but in the end it all worked out fantastically - as did the day. As the teams came streaming off the buses at Maidstone at the end of the day, every face had a smile upon it, and even more so, the ones who were adorned with 1st, 2nd and 3rd placing trophies (which can be located in the foyer cabinets). Overall, a fantastic event, an amazing amount of students to have been given (for some their first) an awesome and exhilarating experience I'm sure they will never forget. I would like to say a huge thank you to all the parents who supported this event by helping, and to the amazing bunch of coaches and sports managers who took the time out of their days to train the teams up for this experience. A huge thank you goes out to the students who were fantastic team players - and who made Maidstone proud by living the values through and through. Mrs Dee, Sports Coordinator

Netball Roundup Inter-Intermediate Netball Tournament

On Wednesday 17 August, the Year 7A, 8A and 8B teams travelled to Porirua to participate in the annual Inter-Intermediate tournament. The conditions were perfect for Netball, as we managed to avoid the forecast afternoon rain. Both 7A and 8A were undefeated in their pool games and successfully made it through to the finals for their year group. They faced strong competition throughout the day. Our 8B team were close to making semis with close losses in their pool. Year 7A faced Masterton in the semi-final and loss narrowly 10-8. The eventual winners of the grade were a very strong Hutt Intermediate team. The Year 8A team faced tough competition from Newlands A who obviously wanted revenge after we beat them convincingly the week before at the Wellington Sports Festival. We fought back from being behind at half time to win by 3. Our opponents for the final would be our old foes Hutt Intermediate once again. The girls came out strong and lead by 3 at half time. Unfortunately midway through the second half, Mikayla C took a bump to her head from an aggressive penalty. This definitely affected our momentum and the girls unfortunately lost 14-13. Hutt Valley Netball Competition/Prize-Giving

Maidstone had good success again this year in the Hutt Valley competition which came to an end last Friday night at the Hutt Valley Prize-giving. Round 1 winners were: MIS 4, 6, 7 and 9. Round 2 winners were: MIS 6 and 9. Well done to these awesome teams, their coaches, managers, umpires and supporters. At the conclusion of the prize-giving was the annual Intermediate Cup Challenge, where our Year 8A team faced Hutt Intermediate once again. We had a narrow lead after the first quarter, but weren’t able to really establish our combinations, and the team lost 30-11. Not an ideal way to end the season, but something to reflect on as we prepare for AIMS.

If players are not participating in any further Netball events, please wash and return your uniform to Mrs Moka in Room 11. Netball merits will be issued once the uniform is returned. Thank you to all players, coaches, managers, umpires, and supporters for a fantastic Netball season. Without your help we would not be able to provide a successful Netball programme for our students. Please email me if you are keen to be involved next year as a coach, manager, umpire or selector: [email protected] Liz Moka, (Maidstone Netball Coordinator)
