ACL: Suwon beat Kobe to advance as Guangzhou exit REUTERS – HONG KONG South Korea’s Suwon Bluewings handed Vissel Kobe a 2-0 defeat in their final group game in the Asian Champions League in Doha yesterday to secure a place in the last 16 at the expense at twice champions Guangzhou Evergrande. Needing to win by two goals to qualify for the last 16 ahead of the Chinese Super League side, second-half efforts by Kim Gun-hee and Lim Sang-hyub were enough to take Park Kun- ha’s side through to a meeting with Japan’s Yokohama F Marinos. Despite the loss, Kobe still top Group G and will face Shanghai SIPG in the next phase as Vitor Pereira’s side sealed the runners-up spot in Group H despite a 2-0 defeat at the hands of already-eliminated Jeonbuk Motors. The teams will meet on Monday for a place in the quarter-finals as clubs from east Asia play out the remainder of the coronavirus-delayed tour- nament in a bio-secure bubble in Qatar. Iranian side Persepolis await the eventual qualifiers for the final, which will be played on Dec. 19 in Doha’s Al Janoub Stadium, having advanced through the equivalent compe- tition for teams from the west of Asia in October. Suwon had struggled to make an impression in the opening 45 minutes of their must-win game, but everything changed four minutes after the interval when the South Koreans took the lead as Kim’s header went in off Kobe defender Tetsushi Yamakawa. Eighteen minutes later Suwon claimed their second when Lim converted from the penalty spot as a result of defender Takuya Yasui han- dling on the line. That meant Suwon finished ahead of Guangzhou by a sol- itary goal as the teams finished level on points after four games in Group G, which featured only three teams following the earlier withdrawal of Malay- sia’s Johor Darul Ta’zim. In Group H, Yokohama F Marinos were held to a 1-1 draw by Sydney FC after taking the lead when Yuki Saneto slotted home at the far post fol- lowing a corner from Kota Mizunuma. But Trent Buhagiar con- tinued his rich vein of scoring form for the Australians when he raced behind the Yokohama defence before driving his shot past Yohei Takaoka to score his fifth goal of the group phase. The result was not enough to deny Ange Postecoglou’s Yokohama side top spot in Group H, with the J-League outfit amassing 13 points from their six games to finish four points clear of second-placed Shanghai SIPG. The Chinese side slipped to a 2-0 defeat by Jeonbuk Motors after Cho Gue-sung’s first-half double as he netted a header before converting a penalty as the twice cham- pions from South Korea con- cluded with a win to finish third in the group. Suwon’s forward Im Sang-Hyeob (leſt) scores against Vissel Kobe during the AFC Champions League group G match at the Khalifa International Stadium yesterday. FAWAD HUSSAIN THE PENINSULA Feared strikers Akram Afif and Almoez Ali scored two goals each as Asian champions Qatar thrashed Bangladesh 5-0 in a Group E clash of the joint 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup qualifier at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha. Yesterday’s emphatic victory consolidated Al Annabi’s top position in the group with 16 points from 6 matches, with Oman - who have played a match less – are in second spot with 12 points. With Qatar making a return to international football after a year’s break in the coronavirus-affected season, coach Felix Sanchez fielded a strong side against Bangladesh, while also handing Mohammed Waad his Qatar debut. Midfielder Abdelaziz Hatem opened the home team’s account in the 9th minute while reigning AFC Player of the year Afif scored his goals in 33rd and 90+2 minutes. The AFC 2019 Asian Cup’s top scorer Almoez fired his first goal on a penalty in 72nd minute before com- pleting his brace six minutes later. But, Almoez gave Qatar an injury scare as he was carted off soon after scoring his second goal. Qatar were in complete control yesterday, enjoying 73 percent of ball possession in the match, which was attended by 1044 socially-distanced fans. But, the hosts also showed signs of lack of competitive match practice as they missed some easy chances. Qatar took a total of 32 shots including 15 strikes on targets, making goalkeeper Anisur Rahman the most busy man from the visiting side. Bangladesh were not able to take a single shot on target. As Qatar started aggressively, Ahmed Alaaeldin’s touch hit the goal post in the 4th minute, but soon the Sanchez-coached side got the lead from Al Rayyan star Hatem, who shot past Rahman after receiving an angular pass from the 2019 AFC Player of the year Abdelkarim Hassan. The hosts could have doubled the lead in 20th minute but Boualem Khouki headed the ball wide off a fine cross from a cross from Hatem. Five minutes later, Hassan had his first shot on target but Bangladesh goalkeeper faced little difficulty in blocking the ball. A few moments Hassan shot wide after being bril- liantly set up by Afif. Bangladesh earned their first corner in 29th minute after Afif raced to clear the ball from near the circle in first attack from the visitors. As clock reached past an half-hour mark, Rahman made a good safe from a fine touch by Afif, just giving away a corner. But, soon after that Afif fired a clinical strike on the right corner from just outside the circle, making it impossible for the goalie to avoid the double deficit before half-time. Soon after the second half begun, Bangladesh goalkeeper had to be treated after he collided with Almoez, who was trying to connect a rising ball from captain Hasan Al Haydos. Alaaeldin, onside, got a long ball inside the circle but he failed to beat the lone goalkeeper, missing a good opportunity. Qatar continued to attack Bang- ladesh’s goal and in one of those attacks Rahman made an acrobatic save from Almoez’s header as clock crossed an hour-mark. In his first two substitutions, Sanchez sent Abdullah Al Ahraq and Moyaed Hassan to replace Al Haydos and Alaaeldin. Moyaed soon made his presence felt, winning a penalty for the hosts after being fouled by Biplu Ahmed. Almoez was on target on the penalty to extend Qatar’s lead in 71st minute. He struck again from a close range, with Hatim setting him up with a volley. But, in doing so Almoez suffered a thigh injury and had to be replaced with Youssef Abdurisag. Just when Qatar looked settled for a 4-0 win, Afif scored his second goal with an assist from Al Ahraq as Al Annabi walked away with a compre- hensive victory. Being the hosts of FIFA World Cup 2022, Qatar are automatic qualifiers for the global showpiece, but they will confirm their place at China 2023 as group winners, or as one of the four highest-ranked runners-up. It means there will be two Club World Cups in the same year, with Qatar hosting the 2020 edition between February 1 and 11 before another seven- team edition goes ahead in Japan in December. Japan has hosted the Club World Cup eight times before, most recently in 2016. A lucrative, revamped 24-team Club World Cup, including eight sides from Europe, was due to be played in China next year, but the expanded compe- tition will not now start until a later date after the delayed Euro 2020 and the Copa America were pencilled in for next June and July. It means there will be one representative each from Europe, South America, North and Central America, Africa, Asia and Oceania, with the Japanese champions completing the line-up. South Korea’s Suwon Bluewings handed Vissel Kobe a 2-0 defeat in their final group game in the Asian Champions League in Doha yesterday to secure a place in the last 16 at the expense at twice champions Guangzhou Evergrande.

Needing to win by two goals to qualify for the last 16 ahead of the Chinese Super League side, second-half efforts by Kim Gun-hee and Lim Sang-hyub were enough to take Park Kun-ha’s side through to a meeting with Japan’s Yokohama F Marinos.

Despite the loss, Kobe still top Group G and will face Shanghai SIPG in the next phase as Vitor Pereira’s side sealed the runners-up spot in Group H despite a 2-0 defeat at the hands of already-eliminated Jeonbuk Motors.

The teams will meet on Monday for a place in the quarter-finals as clubs from east

Asia play out the remainder of the coronavirus-delayed tour-nament in a bio-secure bubble in Qatar.

Iranian side Persepolis await the eventual qualifiers for the final, which will be played on Dec. 19 in Doha’s Al Janoub Stadium, having advanced through the equivalent compe-tition for teams from the west of Asia in October.

Suwon had struggled to make an impression in the opening 45 minutes of their must-win game, but everything changed four minutes after the interval when the South Koreans took the lead as Kim’s header went in off Kobe defender Tetsushi Yamakawa.

The Chinese side slipped to a 2-0 defeat by Jeonbuk Motors after Cho Gue-sung’s first-half double as he netted a header before converting a penalty as the twice cham-pions from South Korea con-cluded with a win to finish third in the group.

Feared strikers Akram Afif and Almoez Ali scored two goals each as Asian champions Qatar thrashed Bangladesh 5-0 in a Group E clash of the joint 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup qualifier at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha.

The AFC 2019 Asian Cup’s top scorer Almoez fired his first goal on a penalty in 72nd minute before com-pleting his brace six minutes later. Japan to host FIFA Club World Cup in 2021AFP – LAUSANNE

Japan will host the Club World Cup in its existing format in late 2021, FIFA p r e s i d e n t G i a n n i Infantino announced yesterday, with his expanded version of the tournament still on hold for now after being post-poned due to the corona-virus pandemic.

It means there will be two Club World Cups in the same year, with Qatar hosting the 2020 edition between February 1 and 11 before another seven-team edition goes ahead in Japan in December.

Japan has hosted the Club World Cup eight times before, most recently in 2016.

A lucrative, revamped 24-team Club World Cup, including eight sides from Europe, was due to be played in China next year, but the expanded compe-tition will not now start until a later date after the delayed Euro 2020 and the Copa America were pencilled in for next June and July.

It means there will be one representative each from Europe, South America, North and Central America, Africa, Asia and Oceania, with the Japanese champions completing the line-up.

  • REUTERS – WELLINGTON

Kane Williamson showed few signs he has not played a test since March as the New Zealand captain posted a career-best 251 on the second day of the opening test against West Indies in Hamilton yesterday.

Williamson’s 22nd test century, and third double ton, made up almost half of New Zea-land’s first innings total of 519 for seven declared before the tourists reached 49 without loss in reply.

John Campbell was on 22 and Kraigg Brathwaite 20 not out at the close of play at Seddon Park.

Williamson had started the day’s play on 97 after he and Tom Latham (86) put on 154 runs for the second wicket on the first day after Jason Holder had won the toss and asked the hosts to bat on a green pitch.

Williamson lost overnight partner Ross Taylor (38) in the second over but brought up his century when he punched a Kemar Roach delivery through point in the next over.

He then dominated the middle-order part-nerships with Henry Nicholls (seven), Tom Blundell (14) and Daryl Mitchell (nine) and brought up his double century with another characteristic cover drive, again off Roach’s bowling.

While he lost Mitchell shortly afterwards, Williamson and Kyle Jamieson combined for a breezy 94 runs before the captain, who had hit Alzarri Joseph for a four and six to go past 250, was caught at deep midwicket attempting to clear the rope again.

Pace bowler Jamieson then continued to burnish his repu-tation as a potential all-rounder with a first half-century.

Williamson declared shortly after the 2.03m tall Jamieson reached his milestone. The 25-year-old now has scores of 44, 49 and 51 not out in his three test innings after making his debut earlier this year against India.

15SATURDAY 5 DECEMBER 2020SportAl Attiyah heads strong Toyota, Overdrive Racing challenge in back-to-back Baja Ha'il events THE PENINSULA – HA’IL, SAUDI ARABIA

Qatar’s Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah heads a six-strong Toyota and Overdrive Racing challenge at a pair of forthcoming back-to-back Baja Ha'il events that will form the last two rounds of the radically revised 2020 FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Bajas.

In a season of global FIA motor sport decimated by the COVID-19 situation, the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation (SAMF) managed to save the FIA Baja series by running two events that will decide the outcome of the five-round series.

Al Attiyah will drive the sole Toyota Gazoo Racing entry over the course of the two events in the deserts of north-central Saudi Arabia and will be joined by Overdrive Racing entries for local star Yazeed Al Rajhi, the Dutch duo of Bernhard Ten Brinke and Erik van Loon, Frenchman Ronan Chabot and a Team Orlen/Overdrive Toyota Hilux for Poland’s Jakub

Przygonski. An official Toyota entry is yet to claim a win at the Ha’il event.

The Belgium-based oper-ation has been making pre-event preparations before heading to the Kingdom to prepare for the two Bajas in Ha’il that precede the Dakar Rally at the start of January 2021.

While Al Attiyah and French navigator Matthieu Baumel look to round off the chaotic season by challenging for outright victory in their Toyota Hilux,

Ten Brinke will be looking to try and clinch a first ever FIA Baja title. Partnered by the Belgian Tom Colsoul, Ten Brinke will arrive in Saudi Arabia locked in a duel for the title with Russian Vladimir Vasilyev after the Dutchman’s impressive win in Baja Portalegre last month. The pressure will be on Ten Brinke to balance speed with a degree of caution in a bid to clinch the prestigious Drivers’ title.

“Our last test for the Dakar will be by doing Ha’il Baja,” said Baumel, who won events in

Qatar and Andalucia this season with Al Attiyah.

“It’s good news that all the teams can compete in this race, just around 15 days before the start of Dakar. This is unusual because we are not normally allowed to test in the country of the rally and especially 15 days before. This will be good for us to drive a little bit on the sand, as we did not really compete this year due to the pandemic," Baumel said.

Al Rajhi and German co-driver Dirk von Zitzewitz will be looking for outright victory on the driver’s home event. The Saudi pushed Al Attiyah and Carlos Sainz hard at the Anda-lucia Rally in southern Spain in October and has a formidable record in the Ha’il International Rally – an event that kick-started FIA international motor sport of all forms in Saudi Arabia back in 2007.

Przygonski and Germany’s Gottschalk clinched the 2020 Polish (RMPST) Cross-Country Championships at Wysoka Grzęda Baja Drawsko and arrive in Saudi Arabia keen to

continue their Dakar prepara-tions in the Team Orlen-sup-ported car.

Dutchman Erik Van Loon and French co-driver Sébastien Delaunay crew the fourth of the Overdrive cars, the experienced duo hoping to strengthen their relatively new partnership before tackling the Dakar together for the first time. The French crew of Ronan Chabot and Gilles Pillot complete the official Toyota line-up in Saudi Arabia.

The closing two rounds of the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Bajas take place over a hectic seven-day period. The three-day Baja Hail 1 (December 10-12) will offer 592 compet-itive kilometres in a route of 890km.

Baja Hail 2 (December 14-16) has a slightly shorter format and offers 479 kilo-metres of competition in a route of 780km. Most equipment will likely then stay in the Middle East over the Christmas period before teams ready themselves for the Dakar Rally at the start of January.

George Russell established himself at the top of the Formula One timesheets on his first outing as seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton’s stand-in with the fastest time in yesterday’s opening practice session for the Sakhir Grand Prix.

The 22-year-old, seated in Hamilton’s Mercedes after the Briton tested positive for COVID-19, lapped the 3.5-km outer circuit of the desert track that also hosted last weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix in 54.546 seconds.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Alexander Albon were second and third respectively, with Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas only man-aging fourth, 0.322 seconds off the pace.

South Africa ODI postponed after player tests positive

    AP – CAPE TOWN

The first cricket one-day international between South Africa and England was post-poned yesterday after another player tested positive for the coronavirus in the host teams’ secure bio-bubble.

The game, the first of three ODIs, was postponed to tomorrow, the two cricket federations said.

Cricket South Africa and the England and Wales Cricket Board said the decision was made “in the interests of the safety and well-being of both teams, match officials and all involved in the match.”

The CEOs of both boards, Kugandrie Govender of CSA and Tom Harrison of the ECB, agreed to the postponement.

The player, who was not named, is the third South African player to test positive during the England tour, which began in mid-November.

Jadeja injured as concussion substitute Chahal fires India to win over AustraliaREUTERS – MELBOURNE

Concussion substitute Yuzv-endra Chahal took three wickets as India beat Australia by 11 runs in the first Twenty20 match in Canberra yesterday but the win was soured by an apparent hamstring injury to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

In a contest laced with con-troversy, Jadeja top-edged into his helmet in the final over but was not tested for concussion on the field at Manuka Oval.

He ended up scoring a val-uable nine runs off the last three deliveries to push his team to a defendable total of 161 for seven.

Jadeja, however, was ruled out during the innings break, and Australia coach Justin Langer had a heated argument with match referee David Boon before the home side began its chase at Manuka Oval.

Legspinner Chahal rubbed salt into Australia’s wounds by removing captain Aaron Finch for 35 and star batsman Steve Smith for 12 in quick succession to swing the momentum back to India.

He returned to dismiss Matthew Wade for seven with

the last ball of his quota, the wicketkeeper slog-sweeping to captain Virat Kohli at deep midwicket.

India claimed their second successive win of the tour after beating Australia in the third one-day international on Wednesday.

But they will anxiously await the prognosis for Jadeja’s injury less than two weeks before the series-opening test in Adelaide on Dec. 17.

Jadeja called for a trainer in the 19th over as he struggled to bat with his injury but he

gathered himself to hammer 24 runs off the last seven balls faced in his unbeaten 44.

Australia were also left counting the cost, with Finch suffering a muscle injury in the field and hobbling between wickets during his knock.

Opener Lokesh Rahul scored a sparkling 51 off 40 balls and left-arm seamer T Natajaran took 3-30 for the tourists, who ended up cruising to victory despite a mixed display in the field, with Finch dropped twice in successive balls.

Handball: Al Rayyan rope in star Markovic

    THE PENINSULA – DOHA

Al Rayyan announced the signing of national team’s star Zarko Markovic ahead of the new handball season starting later this month.

Al Rayyan have roped in Markovic from Al Gharafa, to strengthen the side as he is one of the distinguished players on national circuit. Markovic was one of the key players of Qatari team during their phe-nomenal second finish in the 2015 World Championship.

“I will do everything in my power to serve the team and help my side winning titles and championships for the fans,” he said. The contract with Markovic comes as Al Rayyan look to regain their position as one of the top handball teams in the country.
