I.D.E.A. principle:
I – Identify – State the key word required for the answer.
D – Describe/define – Always describe the key word/s that you have identified. Use the words,
is, means, suggests that, following that key word to help describe.
E – Explain – If the question asks you to explain then after you have identified and
described the key word, use the word because to explain your answer.
A - Apply - Use the appropriate practical examples to support your explanation.
C - Conclusion - Finish your 20 mark question with a concluding statement. ‘In my
opinion……………….’
Paragraphs:
Always try and use a new paragraph when describing/explaining a newly identified key word.
Key verbs used in exam questions
Identify – One word answers/key words only required.
Describe – Paint a picture in words/use the correct definition.
Discuss – Present the pro’s and con’s of a topic.
Evaluate – Examine the strengths and weaknesses of a topic.
Explain – Develop an answer giving reasons why you have made that comment.
Analyse – Break the topic down into simpler parts and explaining their significance.
