InvitationOn behalf of the Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) and the organising committee, we warmly invite you to sponsor the 60th PAH Health Symposium.

To be held from Tuesday 24 to Friday 27 August, the theme of the 2021 symposium is Embracing diversity in healthcare.

Diversity in healthcare extends far beyond a language barrier. Age, gender, culture, ethnicity and race have become increasingly important factors and must be at the forefront of healthcare professionals’ minds when delivering patient care.

Previous themes have focussed on topics such as digital healthcare, personalised medicine and person-centred care but we are delighted that this year offers us the opportunity to explore the theme of diversity. This topic is indeed a step away from tradition and at a time when our health service is growing rapidly in diversity on so many levels.

Showcasing current and emerging research topics, the program will reflect on the changes in healthcare over 60 years and explore how health services are embracing diversity and working with patients, providers and health workers to build a diversity-responsive and progressive health system underpinned by a culture of collaborative research, innovative service models and technology.

There will be numerous opportunities for sponsors to connect with leading clinicians and researchers from PAH, Metro South Health, the Translational Research Institute, other Queensland hospital and health services, universities and research institutes throughout the event.

We would be delighted to work with you in 2021 to provide our attendees with an unparalleled opportunity to access leading education and the latest research—enabling them to continue delivering excellence in healthcare.

Sincerely

Previously known as ‘PAH Week’ among staff, the PAH Health Symposium will celebrate its 60th year in 2021.

As Queensland’s longest running health-related conference, the symposium is Metro South Health’s (MSH) flagship education and research event.

In the early days, the PAH Society Extended Postgraduate Meeting was a low-profile affair, based on a 3-day visit by a guest speaker. By 1969, this educational event had become a well-recognised component of life at PAH, and the first PAH Week was born.

Today, the symposium provides a platform for the PAH precinct and all MSH facilities to proudly showcase their work and offers an opportunity to hear local, national and international experts, from a variety of clinical professions, present advancements in research and clinical practice.

Fostering a culture of education and innovative research, the symposium promotes quality care for patients, and provides valuable networking opportunities with colleagues, peers and industry representatives.

Keynote speaker Kurt Aaron OratorZibeon FieldingHealth care practitioner, runner, cyclist and fundraiser SA State Recipient Young Australian of the Year 2020

Zibeon Fielding is dedicated to raising vital funds to help close the gap in Indigenous health. In 2016, he was selected for the Indigenous Marathon Project, training and competing in the New York, Boston and Tokyo Marathons.

But these achievements were only preparation for Zibeon’s ultimate goal: to run an ultra-marathon through his homelands on the APY lands. He successfully raised $50,000 for Purple House, an organisation that provides dialysis to some of Australia’s most remote communities. This will enable Aboriginal people with diabetes to return from the cities to visit their homes.

In 2019, Zibeon cycled 700 kilometres across the rough corrugated roads and extreme heat of the Australian outback, to bring about awareness for improvement of Aboriginal health, and raise $40,000 for a new gym in his community. As a health care practitioner, he has conducted health checks on children, educated communities about healthy living and eating, and run bike workshops along the way.

Zibeon is now living in Adelaide SA with his daughter ‘Natannia’. He is going to Uni to study Biomedical Science, which he hopes to go on to do medicine and become a doctor.

Dr Bridie O’DonnellExecutive Director | Public Events Team Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions

Dr Bridie O’Donnell graduated Valedictorian from the University of QLD Medical School and was awarded the JRS Lahz prize for Most Outstanding Intern of the Year.

professional cyclist in Europe and the US from 2008-2012, working part time every summer as an ICU Fellow and Orthopaedic assistant to fund her cycling career.

Bridie represented AUS three times at cycling world championships, and then returned home to Melbourne to work at the Epworth hospital as a behaviour change physician. In 2016, she broke the UCI Women’s Hour World Record riding 46.882km at sea level.

In 2017 Dr O’Donnell was appointed the inaugural head of the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation and in 2018 she published ‘Life and Death - a cycling memoir.’
