The 2nd Annual World Heritage Festival will take place September 6 – 10th 2017 with a vast array of exciting events! From an annual International Living Heritage Symposium, a beautifully designed Restored by Light presentation of Mission Concepcion, to a family friendly Tour de las Misiones & Pachanga plus more. This Festival encourages everyone to celebrate and explore firsthand, the interweaving of the Spanish and Coahuiltecan cultures that contribute to our World Heritage status and serves to preserve both our tangible and intangible heritage for future generations.
Achieving World Heritage status for our San Antonio Missions was a decade in the making. On July 5, 2015, San Antonio’s five Spanish colonial missions – Missions San Jose, San Juan, Concepcion, Espada and the world renown Alamo – were declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. The Missions now represent the only World Heritage site in Texas and one of just 23 in the United States. The UNESCO World Heritage Designation is a catalyst for socio-economic change, with increased visitation and tourist spending. Currently, San Antonio is home to 34 million visitors each year. With this designation, we anticipate increased visitation and tourism to our city.
Achieving World Heritage status was a collaborative effort of Bexar County, the National Park Service, The General Land Office, San Antonio River Authority, the Archdiocese of San Antonio, Los Compadres (now Mission Heritage Partners), the City of San Antonio, the San Antonio Conservation Society and the National Parks Conservation Association. The effort to maximize the benefits of designation continues to be a collaborative partnership. We invite you to be a part of the World Heritage Festival, an annual collaborative event to celebrate the World Heritage inscription, while also promoting and creating awareness for the San Antonio Missions. The Festival raises funds to preserve, maintain and connect the Missions to the river and other cultural and historical assets. This five day celebration allows residents and visitors the opportunity to celebrate our unique history, heritage and culture, while at the same time supporting projects that preserve, maintain and connect.
