AHRA’s 42nd Annual Meeting is now in full swing! Yesterday morning, the registration booth was swarming with attendees picking up their name tags, AHRA backpacks, and meeting materials .

A group of early birds met up Sunday morning and took a short ride over to Potomac Ridge for the 15th Annual Education Foundation Golf Tournament (see photos and winner details on page 4) . Other attendees had a plethora of educational sessions to choose from: the second annual Physician Track, the brand new Lean Six Sigma Workshop, and sessions for both the Basic and Advanced tracks . Future CRAs attended the CRA Exam Workshop to get some study tips, and the 2013-2014 ELM class met to present their projects and wrap up their program year .

An important reminder to please be on time for your sessions . Make sure to have a volunteer scan your badge at the beginning and end of the session to receive CE credit for that session . Late arrivals and early departures cannot be accommodated .

The Welcome Reception for New Members and First Time Attendees was held last night, followed by the President’s Reception where Ed Yoder welcomed all the attendees and formally kicked our meeting off . Both receptions provided plenty of opportunities for socializing and networking (and some great food and drink!) .

Did you know that the Annual Meeting has its own mobile app? You can view the entire schedule and pick sessions to add to your own personal schedule, so you never miss a session you want to attend . You can also view maps and a list of exhibitors in the exhibit hall . The app is free to download at www .ahraonline .org/app .

AHRA staff is on hand at the membership booth outside of registration, and the Design Team is located just across the hall in Chesapeake E if you have any questions while you’re here .

Happy Monday! The 42nd Annual Meeting Kicked Off Yesterday

On behalf of myself and the 2014 Annual Meeting Design Team, welcome to Wash-ington DC and the 2014 AHRA Annual Meeting & Exposition! I’ve had the honor to lead a gang this year, the Boogie Woo-gie Bugle Boy Gang that is . Yeah, that’s right . Under the direction of the AHRA staff, the board of directors, a bunch of volunteers and other dedicated profes-sionals, my gang and I have been working for the last 12 months to make sure this annual meeting has some payout for all of you, our members .

If you need assistance during the con-ference seek out a member of the gang (aka DESIGN TEAM) . We’re easy to spot in bright red shirts with “DESIGN TEAM” across the back . The Design Team is here to help you get the most out of your con-ference experience .

Please make sure you arrive for your ses-sions before the start time posted in the schedule . We cannot scan your badge af-ter the speaker begins their presentation . We risk losing the ability to offer CE credit in the future if we bend the rules for late arrivals . You don’t want Wesley “The Hammer” Harden or Tommy “Two Fingers” Wall to have to explain the rules to you in person (they are some of the “muscle” in the Boogie Woogie Gang) .

Pre-conference activities started Satur-day with board meetings . Later Saturday evening the Volunteer Reception was held to recognize the countless number of individuals who selflessly give their time to AHRA and its membership . A

heartfelt “Thank You” goes out to all the volunteers . Without them, we could not offer outstanding educational content and networking opportunities .

The conference officially kicked off Sun-day with a host of activities and events including a golf tournament, CRA work-shop, a Six Sigma workshop .This also marks our second year to offer the Physi-cian Track program . This is just another example of how we are expanding the benefits to our members and their physi-cian groups . The ELM program partic-pants also wrapped up their projects .

Sunday evening wrapped up with a re-ception for new AHRA members and first time Annual Meeting attendees, followed by the highly anticipated President’s Re-ception where AHRA President Ed Yoder officially welcomed everyone to the 2014 Annual Meeting .

I want to personally invite you to the Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy Swing Party on Wednesday evening . Don’t worry if you don’t have a costume or know how to swing dance! Just come enjoy a great evening on the terrace with good food and some 1940s swing and contemporary music .

Don’t miss the General Sessions and Keynote presentations . Those need to be on your ‘must attend’ list! Please spend as much time as possible with the vendors in the Exhibit Hall from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM each day .

Welcome from the Design Team Chair

At the 4:30 PM session on Sunday, Gene Bernieri presented “Effective Performance Appraisals: A Partner-ship and Means of Career Devel-opment .” Gene’s session was very inspiring and informative .

Gene recommends that radiology administrators have their employ-ees fill out self evaluations . These are the most intuitive ways of starting the performance appraisal process . Gene cautions about the

“halo effect” and the “horn effect .” The halo effect is when an administrator overrates a favored employee . This may happen because the employee is a good friend of the administrator .

By contrast, the “horn effect” is when an administrator underrates an unfavorable employee . This can easily happen when the administrator simply does not like the employee . Gene cautions about the “recency error,” where letting outstanding work or unsatisfactory work immediately prior to the evaluation offset an entire year of performance . The “cookie cutter effect” should also be

avoided . This happens when the leader rates all of their employees the same .

Gene stressed the importance of using objective instead of subjective data . Objective data is more easily managed than subjective data and gives the employee the right direction in the appraisal process . Subjective data should not be part of the evaluation process .

Employees should not be surprised when they receive their appraisal . Any good leader will give feedback to their employees on a consistent and regular basis . The feedback should be specific . If an employee is surprised at the time of the evaluation, the leader has failed in the appraisal process .

When goals are set, the employee should be included . Again, objective data should be used in setting goals . It is essential that the appraisal session ends on a positive note and for the leader to clearly summarize the session .

Gene’s delivery was very dynamic . Every attendee came away with helpful hints on how to improve their perfor-mance appraisal process .

Y’all are Trying to Kill Me! What Another Computer System to Learn!?

Convention Daily

If you attended this session look-ing for the standard breakout session structure involving a speaker presentation of a topic us-ing PowerPoint slides, well, there was a bit of a twist . For starters, ground rules that involved select-ing two people (the presenters, Shannon Knight and Kim Bond) to serve as leaders, and dividing the remaining participants into two teams (a team A and team B of

sorts) with the lure of prizes for the winners established a tone that distinguished this session from many others . Add to this two presenters who positioned themselves on opposite sides of the room, and we have, potentially, the makings of a memorable topic delivery . Presenters would ask questions, and a point would be awarded to the team who answered correctly . At this point, I quietly raised the question, how will the topic of “Y’all are trying

to kill me” be unveiled with this interactive approach? Who is trying to kill me, and what can I do about it? This session was, after all, about computers, and after listing numerous systems and the various computer software associated with these systems, it was then I began to see who was killing me . For example, patient feedback data collection is tracked by Press Ganey; monitoring patient in/out punches is recorded in Kronos; retirement account-ing is measured using PTA; performance evaluations are captured in Lawson; Continuing Education credits are stored in e-health software; the level of supplies are kept in PMM; and more . All of these different computer sys-tems are used to monitor various aspects of health care, and we haven’t even touched the patient . It was becom-ing easier to detect who was trying to kill me . So now that I have an idea of who was after me, what could I do about it? The concept or model of Organizational Pillars was in-

troduced, which this consists of six parts: culture, quality and service, patient experience, finance, growth, and community health needs assessment . In learning about organizational applications, organizational education, Joint Commission items, radiology tools, obstacles, and accountability, it became clear that the Organizational Pillars model provides the pathway to addressing the various challenges associated with monitoring multiple software systems through examining the larger picture of care . What appeared as separate software pieces actu-ally are connected in a larger model framework that has a cohesive and connected focus . Understanding this focus removes significant levels of apprehension when faced with tracking multiple aspects of operational demands . Providing a larger picture joining the various pieces together helped provide perspective of numerous radiology computer systems challenges connected with operational functionality . The scope of the Organizational Pillar model represents thread that weaves together the fabric of various com-puter software day to day demands . The session ended

leaving participants feeling less threatened, knowing that there is a model to provide clarity and perspective to numerous computer system demands . In case you are wondering which team won, all partici-pants were winners in the end, both by the information learned and the decision by the presenters to award prizes to everyone . Given the win-win situation of this presentation, I was reminded of the saying that what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger . Great session!
