A top Cool Culture choice for the Fernandez family has been the Staten Island Children’s Museum, which has great exhibits and interactive activities like Bugs and Other Insects where children can see live insects as well was pretend to be bugs themselves and Ladder 11 where kids can pretend they are firefighters. “I find it [the Children’s Museum] very helpful to them [her children] because they have many different areas for them to explore.” The Fernandez children especially love jumping on the back of the fire truck in Ladder 11 as well as sliding down a firehouse pole, simulating the work real fire fighters do when responding to an emergency.
Harbey says that his favorite area at the Museum is The Big Game, an exhibit where children can play board games with life-size games pieces. “They have bowling, dominoes and checkers,” says Harbey who adds that his favorite game is dominoes.
As far as Isabella and Kayla are concerned, Ms. Fernandez says that they love Portia’s Playhouse, an area in the museum where they can try on costumes, dress up and pretend. It’s a great benefit for them to just open their minds up to different things ---- different experiences, different cultures,” says Ms. Fernandez.
Like all museum lovers, the kids have their favorites. “My favorite museum is the Intrepid. I like all of the airplanes,” says Harbey, who adds that his favorite part of the Intrepid was the flight deck. “We were all on top and could see all of the planes,” he says. Harbey, who as the eldest Fernandez child and more talkative than his siblings, says he also likes the
American Museum of Natural History. “It’s nothing like the movie night at the Museum. It’s much, much bigger than that. It’s more exciting. My favorite part was when I got to see the monkeys.”
There are many incredible surprises awaiting you when you visit a museum that you initially may not have thought would appeal to children. For Ms. Fernandez, this was the case with Museum of Jewish Heritage. “I wasn’t quite sure if they’d like it,” says Ms. Fernandez, but they did,” asserts Ms Fernandez who says her children had a fun time making crafts at the museum.
In underscoring the importance of Cool Culture to her children’s lives, Ms. Fernandez highlights the impact she hopes visiting museums can have on her kids’ educational experiences. Harbey has already found the Intrepid helping in his understanding of school course work. “The Intrepid taught me about all of the planes and you can see what they had in the whole entire boat. This helped me in social studies class,” explains Harbey.
Five year old Isabella, who likes animals, found the Staten Island Zoo to be her favorite place to visit with Cool Culture. “I gave crackers to the lama. That was fun,” says Isabella of feeding the animal she found to be nice and soft. Kayla, on the other hand, was thrilled at being able to see a cockroach at the Children’s Museum.
Whether it’s the Children’s Museum of Staten Island, Museum of Jewish Heritage in lower Manhattan or the American Museum of Natural History on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, you can use your Cool Culture Family Pass to enjoy some of best things New York City has to offer!

My NEW YORK just gets BIGGER and BIGGER!When it comes to getting out and enjoying the great things New York City has to offer, the Fernandez family of Staten Island loves Cool Culture. It has been the family’s hot ticket to new worlds and experiences throughout all five boroughs of our city.
Since being introduced to Cool Culture last year through her daughter’s early education program, Staten Island Mental Health Head Start, mother of three Luisa Fernandez has taken tremendous advantage of having a treasured Cool Culture Family Pass. “We’ve been very busy,” says Ms. Fernandez whose children Harbey, Isabella and Kayla are ten, five and three, respectively. “We go to a museum at least once a month and they really enjoy it.”
The Fernandez family has particularly enjoyed visiting Museum of Jewish Heritage, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum --- all in Manhattan --- as well as the New York Hall of Science in Flushing Meadows Park in Queens, the Staten Island Children’s Museum and the Staten Island Zoo.

SEA, AIR & SPACE
MUSEUM
When many people think of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum --- the storied World War II Navy ship docked on the Hudson River in Manhattan --- they immediately think of war and guns. But the Intrepid is a whole lot more. In fact, it is an unbelievably fantastic treat of afternoon, fun, history and education for the whole family all rolled into one. “The institution as a whole is not about guns and war,” explains Susan Marenoff, Executive Director of the Museum. “This institution is about
heroism. We are about honoring our heroes, educating the public and inspiring our youth,” she adds.
In celebrating and honoring heroism, the Intrepid showcases a spectacular array of exciting exhibits that will keep your entire family engaged and satisfied all day. “There’s just a lot of fun and educational learning,” says Ms. Marenoff. “There’s no doubt that you could spend an entire day or an entire afternoon here and still not see everything. And it doesn’t even matter what the weather is. We have so much on the inside that even if there’s inclement weather you can still spend a great deal of time inside.”
Ms. Marenoff cites the Museum’s Exploreum and its extensive collection of interactive activities as one of the museum’s most awe-inspiring and popular attractions with children. “We have twenty-first century technology ingrained in all of our exhibits now,” stresses Ms. Marenoff.
Looking at the museum’s interactive activities, when visiting the museum, children get a chance sit in the cockpit of a plane or a capsule. They even get to use three different types of flight simulators including one that lets them attempt to land a plane on an aircraft carrier.
A very special treat for kids --- and anyone who has sense of adventure ---is the Growler, a World War II submarine that allows visitors to get an up close look at what it was like to actually live aboard one of the Navy’s most heralded operations.
“People come out of the Growler and are just blown away,” says Ms. Marenoff. It’s the only submarine of its kind in the world that you can actually go on.
Another big treat for visitors of all ages at the Intrepid is the ship’s flight deck, which showcases some 30 restored aircraft including two of the fastest

aircraft in the world: the super-secret A-12 Blackbird spy plane and the Anglo-French luxury airliner Concorde. The Concorde is one of only two in North America, according to Ms. Marenoff, “The Concorde tells a great story; it tells us a lot about Transatlantic travel and flight,” making it a rare opportunity for families.
Not only an incredible place to see aircraft, the flight deck also offers one of New York City’s most spectacular views. “There aren’t many places in the city where you can see the Empire State building, the Statue of Liberty and the George Washington bridge all at once,” adds Luke Sakes, Public Relations Manager at the museum.
In addition to its permanent exhibits, the museum also offers special exhibits and events
throughout the year along with programming
for children on school holidays, making it a fun
and enjoyable place to visit not just once, but a few times a year.
This
USS INTREPID
December during the school holiday break, for example, the Intrepid will
present Snoopy The World War I Flying Ace. Ms. Marenoff points out that Charles Schulz, the creator of
the Peanuts comic strip, served in World War II and was inspired to create a hero in tribute to those who served the country. “This exhibit
will have something for the youth who know the cartoon as well as those in the sociopolitical, intellectual market who really appreciate Snoopy and understand what it stands
for,” she says.
Moving into 2010, in January the museum will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday with its Dreams Come True exhibit, which will center on creating your own inventions. And the February winter school break will bring Midwinter Recess --- Mars Rover Lands at the Intrepid. Here kids will be able to build their very own robots and see what it takes to be a part of the NASA team. These special holiday events promise to be a cool and thrilling time for all.
So whether you and your kids are history and science buffs, adventurers, or just plain fun-lovers, the Intrepid has something for everyone. It’s a must-see for the Cool Culture family and anyone who just loves some good, clean, cool family time.
