A network of artist’s studios and creative workspaces in southern Hampshire.
Directory introduction -
Studio Providers Network South (SPNS) brings together the plethora of artist’s studios and creative workspaces
that currently exist across Southern Hampshire.
The diversity of studios, artists and buildings highlight the dynamic creative businesses that are currently growing
in the South Hampshire region.
The network brings together managers and key people at these projects to share information, provide support,
knowledge and the opportunity to network.
A key focus for the group is the future sustainability and growth of the sector.
Currently 14 independent existing studio providers, supporting over 300 visual arts, creative companies and design
and makers demonstrate the importance of affordable studio space for creative’s. The network also represents and
supports new project in development, these are also listed in the Directory.
The affordable studio sector supports emerging talent and help them take root in the South, in turn this enriches
the local community both culturally and economically.
The SPNS Directory serves as an immediate source of information not only for providers, but also for artists.
The directory contains essential information about location, price and the purpose of each studio.
The SPNS Directory gives immediate access to data on:

• Creative disciplines being supported by the sector
• Facilities offered

‘Over 76% of studio space is occupied by fine artists with painting, sculpture and installation / site specific work
the dominant practices. 26% of the 5450 studios is occupied by craftspeople’ – 2010 NFASP survey.

1. Cellblock- Portsmouth
• In round 2 of the Regional Growth Fund towards development of Cell Block in
Portsmouth’s Royal Naval Dockyard.
• “Cell Block Enterprise” (CBE) will support enterprise skills development, provide access to early stage business
funding (tagged with mentoring to create accountability), accelerate job creation and reuse a neglected but iconic
heritage asset (surplus to MOD requirements).
2. ARTches- Portsmouth
• Seafront Strategy 2011 set out the idea of transforming the area adjacent to the Round Tower in Old Portsmouth
into a vibrant arts and crafts quarter.
• The Seafront Masterplan following public consultation in 2012, was adopted as a Supplementary Planning
Document by the council's Cabinet. The Seafront master plan supplements Policy PCS9 (the Seafront) of the
Portsmouth Plan, setting out how this policy will be implemented.
• The ARTches project aims to convert the currently vacant arches in old Portsmouth into artist studio spaces. The
project hopes to create new jobs and opportunities to visually enhance the area, as well as supporting emerging
creative industries.
• The site intends to be managed by a not-for-profit organisation so that any operating surplus can be invested
back into the future maintenance of the site.
• Funding granted and to be procured by Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH).
3. Guildhall - Portsmouth
• With the help of Portsmouth Cultural Trust, Portsmouth Guildhall will be offering affordable studios to local
artists for only £100 PCM.

4. Progression Studios – Southampton
• The project will create 10 professional studios on the 3rd floor of Southampton Solent University’s Below Bar
campus to create appropriate ‘next stage’ workspaces.
• The project is being delivered in a partnership between PUSH, Southampton Solent University and ‘a space arts’
to co-locate HE and industry, strategically growing the creative industry sector.
• These new workspaces will be designed to meet the needs of mid career creative’s, post incubation, providing
scalable overheads that lead to independent accommodation.
• This addresses a gap in the current infrastructure and instigates a pathway from graduation, through incubation
to mid career progression. Furthermore it enables the sub-region to retain creative talent at a transitional point in
their careers.
