IHG is getting ready to wrap up another exciting year. In 2012, we marked the 60th anniversary of Holiday Inn. The vision of founder Kemmons Wilson to build a chain of hotels with a brand name guests could trust was the driving force behind development of the first Holiday Inn hotel in 1952 in Memphis, Tennessee. Since then, Holiday Inn has become a global icon with 3,367 hotels on six continents, and it contin-ues to evolve to meet the needs of its guests.

This year, Holiday Inn had the honor of being the official hotel services provider to the London 2012 Olympic and Para-lympic Games. It was an exciting time for our company as we had several IHG employees who served as torchbearers from many of our hotels in the world, carrying the Olympic flame during the Olympic Torch Relay.

To complement all the exciting news, IHG continued to strengthen its foothold in the Latin American region during this past year. In June, we welcomed the 160-room Holiday Inn Express Maceio Ponta Verde. This new hotel is located one block from beautiful Ponta Verde beach in Macei, in Northeast Brazil one of the top tourist destinations in the country. Two additional Holiday Inn hotels are also expected to open their doors before the end of the year: the Holiday Inn Express Belem in Brazil and the Holiday Inn Resort Grand Cayman. En 1741, este almirante espaol mutilado de un brazo, una pierna y un ojo en innumerables batallas, re-sisti en Cartagena con pocos hombres bajo su mando una invasin inglesa que vena con fuerzas muy supe-riores bajo las rdenes del gran Almirante Vernon. Con-vencido de que tena ganada la batalla, el prominente ofi cial ingls envi a Inglaterra noticia anticipada de su victoria. Derrotado por la tenacidad y gran estrategia militar de Lezo, al britnico le toc abandonar la plaza y regresar humillado a su patria. Hoy en da Blas de Lezo representa el orgullo cartagenero.

Among the legendary figures of Cartagena de Indi-as, one who best exemplifies the townsfolks spirit of service and bravery is the renowned Blas de Lezo. In 1741, this Spanish admiral (whose arm, leg and eye were mutilated in countless battles) held Cartagena with just a few men under his command against an in-vasion by superior English forces under the orders of the great Admiral Vernon. Convinced that he had won the battle, the prominent English officer sent advance word of his victory to England. Beaten by Lezos tenac-ity and great military strategy, the Englishman had to abandon his post and return to his country in shame. Today, Blas de Lezo is the emblem of the proud people of Cartagena.

tion. Created in the 17th century from a piece of driftwood that miraculously continued to grow, legend says it was carved by an angel who later disappeared from the convent without a trace. The ability to cure epidemics and other supernatural powers has been attributed to this figure of Christ.

When visiting Cartagena, more than any historical building or monument, a visit to the San Felipe de Barajas Castle is a must. The castle was one of the largest and most impres-sive military fortress built by the Spaniards on the American continent, between the 16th and 17th centuries. Its canons and watchtowers bear witness to what it meant to defend this place from pirates and soldiers of fortune. Likewise, no one can leave Cartagena without taking a little stroll past Las Bvedas (the vaults), 23 vaults which in another era held gunpowder or prisoners and are now shops selling craftwork and exquisite sweets offered by the women who make them. These ladies, known as palenqueras, can easily be identified by their colorful native dress and the large bowls they carry on their heads.

You can come to Cartagena anytime, with no plans at all, and still have a good time. However, many of the thousands who visit this city each year come specifically to participate in one of the international festivals held here. The International Film Festival, held in February, is one of the worlds most prestigious. Audiences at the free screenings have the chance to see some of the biggest directors and ac-tors in the world, not just on the screen but also in person.

Another cultural event that has quickly become one of Latin Americas most important is the Hay Festival. This is a major celebration of literature, visual arts, theater, music, geopoli-tics, journalism and the environment. For 10 days in January, some of the worlds foremost writers come here to discuss their work and their ideas.

Then in mid-November, the city hosts Colombias National Beauty Contest. It becomes even lovelier as the candidates for the Miss Colombia title arrive, representing every region of the country. The most beautiful woman of Colombia goes on to represent the country in the Miss Universe pageant. Throughout the year, there are festivals for every taste: regat-tas, beach volleyball, moonlight jazz concerts, traditional foods and more.

Los amantes de la msica no querrn perderse el Museo Pablo Casals, una institucin del Viejo San Juan dedicada a la vida y obra del chelista y compositor espaol Pablo Casals, quien pas las ltimas dos dcadas de su vida en Puerto Rico. En este museo se exhiben diversos instrumentos musicales entre los que se incluye el piano y el chelo de Casals, adems de grabaciones y fotografas de su interpretacin en la Casa Blanca de la ciudad de Washington, EE. UU., en 1961.

Otra de las fi guras pblicas ms queridas de Puerto Rico recibe tributo en el Museo Felisa Rincn de Gautier, homenaje a Doa Fela, la primera alcaldesa de la ciudad de San Juan, quien

Just one block away is the Galera Nacional (National Gallery). Housed in the 16th-century Santo Domingo

convent, it features Puerto Rican artwork from the 16th to the 20th centuries, all from the National Collection of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture. Puerto Rican artistry is also on view at the nearby Museo de Arte e Historia de San Juan (San Juan Museum of Art & History), located in a Spanish colonial building built in 1855 as the citys main marketplace. Contemporary and historical works are exhibited here, along with audiovisual presentations about the history of the city and the island.

Music lovers wont want to miss the Museo Pablo Casals (Pablo Casals Museum), an Old San Juan institution dedicated to the life and work of the Spanish cellist and composer, who spent the last two decades of his life in Puerto Rico. Musical instruments including Casals piano and violoncello are on exhibit here, as well as recordings and photographs from his 1961 performance at the U.S. White House in Washington, D.C.

Another one of Puerto Ricos most beloved public figures is celebrated at the Museo Felisa Rincn de Gautier (Felisa Rincn de Gautier Museum), named for Doa Fela, the first female mayor of the city of San Juan, who served from 1946 to 1968. Visitors can walk through this historic home and gaze at her vintage furniture, decorations, clothing and photographs.

The life of another very famous San Juan resident is the focus of the Museo de la Casa Blanca (White House Museum), set in a building constructed by Juan Ponce de Len, the Spaniard who founded Puerto Rico in 1521. The structure was to be Ponce de Lens personal residence, but he died before moving in. Today, the building houses 16th- and 17th-century artifacts. Its an important stop for history lovers, and a fitting complement to San Juans more famous historic sites, like the fortress called El Morro.

Not far from the popular beachfront neighborhoods Con-dado and Isla Verde is the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (Art Museum of Puerto Rico), located in Santurce. The largest art museum in the San Juan area, its housed in a handsome

EN EL CAMINO DE LA CIUDAD CRIOLLA: LA HISTORIA BRILLA EN CAGUAS Entre San Juan y Ponce, en la ciudad de Caguas, el Museo de Ca-guas se ocupa de preservar el patrimonio de la que se conoce como Ciudad Criolla. Sus muestras exhiben la vida en el Valle del Turabo, la regin que circunda la ciudad, desde la de los pueblos indgenas hasta el presente. Museo de Caguas (Caguas Museum) focuses on preserv-ing the heritage of what is known as the Ciudad Criolla, or Creole City. Exhibits highlight life in the Turabo Valley the area around the city from indigenous people to the present day. Archeological relics on display include pottery, bones and carved stones, as well as suits of armor and other items from the days of the Spanish conquistadors. Among the most significant pieces is the 1,200-year-old remains of a Tano child, as well as documents from the Spanish conquest that record the birth of the islands first criollo (the term used for people born in Puerto Rico), the result of a marriage between Mara Boaganam, an Indian, and the Spanish settler Diego Muriel.

Caguas Museo del Tabaco Herminio Torres Grillo (Her-minio Torres Grillo Tobacco Museum), housed in a 19th-century blacksmiths shop, showcases the important role that tobacco production has played in the islands history. And the Centro de Bellas Artes de Caguas (Caguas Performing Arts Center) offers classical concerts and other live performances.

The Caguas Museum displays relics including pottery, bones and carved stones, as well as suits of armor and other items from the days of the Spanish conquistadors.

Surprisingly, this major artistic hub had rather humble beginnings, as a small museum opened by former Puerto Rican governor Luis Ferr in 1959. Within a few years, the col-lection moved into its current modernist home. Today, the facility attracts visitors and artists from around the world. Current exhibitions include Emilio Snchez: Light, Line and Shadow, a selection of the 415 works (on view through April 2013) donated by the Emilio Snchez Foundation

Entre los ms interesantes se hallan el Museo de la Msica Puer-torriquea, que exhibe instrumentos musicales tanos, espaoles y africanos y que recuerda la diversidad de las races de la msi-ca de la isla; la Casa Wiechers-Villaronga, una casona histrica neoclsica que alberga el Museo de la Arquitectura Poncea; y la Residencia Armstrong-Poventud, un museo histrico ubicado en un edifi cio inscripto en el Registro Nacional de Sitios Histricos de EE. And at the nearby Museo Castillo Ser-ralls (Serralls Castle Museum), visitors can explore the grandeur of a castle-like home that was built in 1934 for the Serralls family, founders of one of the islands most successful rum distilleries. Antique furnishings, elegant dcor and historical displays about the family and Puerto Ricos traditions as a rum producer are among the reasons to visit, and the beautiful gardens make for lovely strolling.

Downtown Ponce which itself feels something like an open-air museum, thanks to its many landmark build-ings is home to several small but noteworthy cultural venues as well. Among the most interesting are the Museo de la Msica Puertorriquea (Puerto Rican Music Museum), which exhibits Tano, Spanish and African musical instruments and highlights the diverse heritage of the islands music; the Casa Wiechers-Villaronga (Wiechers-Villaronga House), a historic neoclassical home that houses the Museo de la Arquitectura Pon-cea (Ponce Architecture Museum); and the Residencia Armstrong-Poventud (Armstrong-Poventud Residence), a history museum set in a building listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
