program notes The spirit song draws its musical content from the final stanza written by Johann Wolfgang von

Goethe in “Spirit Song Over The Waters:”

Seele des Menschen, Wie gleichst du dem Wasser! Schicksal des Menschen, Wie gleichst

du dem Wind. (Soul of man, thou art like unto water! Fortune of man, thou are like unto

wind!).

It seems more fitting to communicate each wonderful verse of the poem through art song, but the

text can just as well become its own musical voice. Furthermore, the vibraphone seemed to be a

fitting instrument for the role. Somber passages mark the opening phrases of the piece much like

the poem itself. The musical lines slowly develop into a more flowing and lively middle section;

concluding in a similar way to the introduction. While the aforementioned stanza is merely an

excerpt, the piece attempts to draw out ideas within the text as a whole.

biography

An American composer from Shelbyville, Ky, Barry Sharp received his B.M. in Composition from

Murray State University, and is currently pursuing an M.A. in the same field at the University of

Iowa. He has performed and conducted many of his works at Murray State University, and

studied tuba performance, conducting, and music education during his time there. Barry has

studied composition with Mike D'Ambrosio, Brian Ciach, Lawrence Fritts, and David Gompper;

tuba with Ray Conklin and J. Bryan Heath; and conducting with Dennis Johnson.

(English Translation)

THE soul of man

Resembleth water:

From heaven it cometh,

To heaven it soareth.

And then again

To earth descendeth,

Changing ever.

Down from the lofty

Rocky wall

Streams the bright flood,
