A ew months ago, we learnedthat rey accepted the call to serveas Senior Minister o Downey Ave.Christian Church in Indianapolis. We all received the news with mixedemotions – excitement or rey’s newopportunity but sad or Woodmont’s

loss. Te time has now come or us tosay goodbye to rey and Merillat as they prepare to maketheir move and begin this new chapter o lie and ministry.

Words cannot begin to express our gratitude or allrey has done or this church. I knew rey and his amilyrom growing up in Memphis at Lindenwood. When Iwas called to Woodmont in 2007, I knew that he wasplanning to begin Vanderbilt Divinity School that all sohe was one o the first calls that I made. I wanted himon the team. rey began as an intern the summer o2007. By Christmas, he was on the staff as our part timeChildren’s Minister. He grew and grew that programover the years. By the time he finished at Vanderbilt, hewas on the Woodmont staff ull time. When we launchedthe Bridge (our evening alternative service) six years ago,we needed somebody who could oversee that importantservice and ministry. rey was the guy. He became themain preaching pastor or the Bridge while also servingas our youth minister. It has been a joy to watch both othese ministries flourish and change lives. In recent years, our youth program has grown and gained incrediblemomentum thanks to rey’s vision and leadership. Hehas empowered many o our youth to become leadersthemselves. Te Bridge has been a aithul worshipingcommunity welcoming many new people into the lie o

our church. It has been a privilege to mentor and watchhim grow. He has developed an amazing skill set and ismore than ready to lead his own church.

As I think back on rey’s nine-year ministry atWoodmont, there are certain things that come to mind.

Te phenomenalgrowth o both ourchildren’s and youthministries. Hispersonal growth asa preacher, teacher, pastor, and leader.

His leadership withour mission teamthat survived theHaiti earthquake in2010. His wedding to Merillat here in the Woodmonsanctuary. His ordination at Woodmont in 2011. Hpassion or social justice and inclusion. His compassioor “the least o these” in our world. His heart or younpeople, comorting them in times o trouble and despaiHis vision and passion or building great programs ansetting goals. His creativity and innovation. His gifs ithe area o technology (which we will greatly miss). Hcommitment to helping Woodmont live out its missioin so many ways.

Ecclesiastes says, “For everything there is a season, ana time or every matter under heaven.” Te time has comor us to say good-bye and to send rey on his way with athe blessings and support o Woodmont. Tere will bereception this Sunday at 10:30 a.m. in the Gathering HalWe are grateul or all he has done and or everything hhas meant to us. Our loss is certainly Downey Ave’s gaiI have no doubt that he will do great things in leadinthat congregation into its next chapter. Tank you reand Merillat or your riendship, your leadership, youministry, your passion, your compassion, your energ

your intellect, and or all you have given to us. Woodmonis eternally grateul and you will be missed in a big way

    With deep gratitude,

Farewell Trey and Merillat! Godspeed! by Clay Stauff
