Activities:

Overview: We organize 3 research seminars, 1 career development talk on how to find industry job related to optics and photonics, and 1 celebration and farewell party for graduating member. The description of individual events are as follows:

Kick-off meeting and Seminar by Prof Debdeep Jena. –June 7, 2010, Fitz 258, Notre Dame

1. Announcement for the start of this year’ SPIE seminar series.

2. Invite Prof. Debdeep Jena to give a seminar. 39 students join the seminar. Following

Seminar by Karel Lemr. –Aug 26, 2010, EE conference, Notre Dame 1. Invite Karel Lemr to give a seminar on Quantum information processing using linear

optics. 20 students join the seminar. Following picture shows Karel Lemr in the seminar.

Seminar by Di Liang. –Nov 12, 2010, 315 Stinson-Remick, Notre Dame 1. To support Di Liang, a former ND alumni, now working in the HP lab to Notre

Dame, additional $ 1000 travel grant is required. We achieved to get the outside funding sources including $ 300 from EE department ND, $ 300 from Graduate Student Union, $ 300 from IEEE Photonics Society, and $ 100 from OSA.

2. Di Liang gave a seminar on Hybrid Silicon Photonic technology and application. ~25 students join the seminar. Following picture shows Karel Lemr in the seminar.

Career development talk by Di Liang, Fitz 356–Nov 12, 2010, 1. Di Liang gave a career development on how to find an industry job related to optics and photonics. 2. This is first time for our organization to organize this type of events. Coordinating with Di Liang and ND career center to design the topic and contents. 3. ~70 people attended the events. 4. The GSU, career center and IEEE photonics society speaks highly of our events and promise to continue to provide financial support for us for the next year.

SPIE leadership workshop and annual conference, July 30 – Aug 5, 2010, San Diego, CA

1. The Notre Dame Student chapter was awarded the Officer Travel Grant for 2009 and sent two officers Wangqing Yuan and Peng Li to the leadership workshop and the SPIE annual conference Optics and Photonics in San Diego, CA. The leadership workshop was very informative and benefited both officers in their personal career goals, but more importantly has inspired more outreach and event ideas for our chapter.

Farewell party for SPIE graduates 1. The SPIE members Yu Cao, Xiu Xing graduated from Notre Dame in Aug.

Congratulations to those students. 2. The SPIE chapter at ND was holding a farewell party for them on Aug 7 2010 in the

University Village Center. BBQ was served. More than 30 people including the current SPIE members and their family and friends attended the party.
