Welcome Cattlemen and Friends!

We cordially invite you to attend our December production sale to be held here

at Spickler Ranch, on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 1:00 PM CDT.

We will sell the cattle in the order they are listed in this catalog, starting with the

Coming Two Year Old Bulls, followed by the Registered Bred Heifers, Commercial

Bred Heifers and Bred Cows. We will also provide videos of each individual lot in the

sale through a link on our web site to Northern Livestock. � e videos should be ready

a couple weeks before the sale. Northern will also provide Internet bidding sale day

for buyers unable to attend the sale.

We are pleased to present this set of bulls to you for your evaluation. When we

made the decision to calve all of our cows in the spring, we saw the opportunity to

have enough March bulls to sell in May as yearling bulls and the April and May born

bulls would be able to be sold in December as coming twos. All of these bulls in this

o� ering were held speci� cally for this sale and have not been topped. We did use

several of the bulls in our operation this summer for natural service.

� e change in calving date to calving all of our cows in the spring also allowed us

to have more cows bred to calve in late March, April and early May, hence the ability

to o� er bred mature cows for sale. � e bred heifers o� ered are a cross section of our

heifer calf crop and represent the group that we would traditionally sell in May as

open heifers. All of the females selling are registered Angus females.

Our family has been ranching and selling seed stock in the James River Valley

since the 1940’s. 2013 marked the beginning of the eighth decade that our family has

been ranching at this location. � e cattle industry has experienced many changes,

as has Spickler Ranch. As third generation seed stock producers, we also know there

are some things that do not change – sound, functional, adaptable, maternal, e� cient

cattle. We have taken a responsibility to you, our customer, to provide herd changing

genetics that will move your program forward. Our customers are the most import-

ant aspect of our business. We value the trust you have placed in us and welcome the

Air Travel Information:Carrington Airport is located just west of Carrington and has a 3800 foot runway with 2700 feet lighted. For transportation from Carrington Airport to Spickler Ranch, call 674-3170 or 674-3169. Jamestown is 45 miles south of Spickler Ranch and is served by a commercial airline. Fargo is located approximately 120 miles southeast of Spickler Ranch and is served by several major airlines. Bismarck is located approximately 145 miles southwest of Spickler Ranch and is served by several major airlines also.

Insurance: Insurance will be available sale day but is not necessary as the bulls are fully guaranteed.

Semen Test:All bulls in the sale have been fertility tested and have passed a breeding soundness exam performed by Dr. Nate Zieman.

Ultrasound Carcass Data:Ultrasound carcass data collected by Jason McLennan on all the bulls is listed with their individual lot in the catalog and has been adjusted to 365 days of age.

Herd Health:Nate Zieman, DVM and Trisa Tedrow, DVMAt weaning the bull calves all received Ultrabac 7- Somubac, Bovi-Shield Gold 5, Pulmogaurd, Inforce, and Dectomax dewormer. The bulls have all been vaccinated with Bovi-shield Gold FP 5VL5 HB, poured to control lice, and dewormed with Safegaurd. The bulls have all been tested negative for Persistent Infected BVD and BLV. Health papers will be furnished sale day for interstate shipment.

EPDs - Expected Progeny Differences - describes genetic differences between animals within a breed and between herds. Research shows they are 7-9 times more accurate than any other measurement including individual performance data. It is the BEST way we have to compare animals for the genetic contribution they will make to your cowherd.

Bull Development at Spickler Ranch: � e coming two year old bulls were weaned in late September 2014. We started them on a ration consisting of alfalfa haylage, oat hay, crp, corn silage, modi� ed distillers, beet pulp, wheat midds, and corn which started at about 40 MCal. � e ration has changed slightly from the past. We did not include oat grain in our ration as we cut and baled our oats for hay. We have substituted beet pulp pellets in the diet in place of oats. We also included corn silage in the diet because we were able to purchase some corn from our neighbors. We did account for the corn in the corn silage at all times and took bunk energy samples to ensure that we were not overfeeding the bulls and that the ration was maintained at 46 Mcal from December 15 until the bulls were scanned on March 4. We target a 3 pound gain on the yearling bulls and the test is usually around 160 days (the distance between weaning weight date and the yearling weight date). We target .25” back fat on the yearling bulls. A� er scanning we removed the corn from the diet and dropped the ration back to a 38 MCal diet which is what they were on until sale time in May of 2015. A� er our May sale the coming two year old bulls were turned out on grass with a protein tub as their supplement. We gathered these bulls in late August and fed them a ration that averaged 40 MCal until sale time in December. We purchase all of our corn and would much rather save that for the home raised steers in our � nishing pen. � e bulls are managed to the best of our ability to display genetic di� erences with regard to performance and carcass ultrasound, while never compromising their soundness or longevity.

The AI bred commercial heifers will sell in groups of fi ve or more in a numeric gate cut starting with Lots 401-405. We have ranked them for size and quality. The heifers sell without registration papers, but all are registered Angus heifers. The heifers are bangs vaccinated, and have been given Bovi-shield Gold 5 FP VL5 HB, injectable Dectomax, their fi rst Scour Bos 9 vaccination and have been poured for lice. The bred heifers are all negative for PI-BVD and BLV. Lots 401-452 (52 head) are ultrasounded safe to their AI service and were synchronized to calve approximately March 1-10. AI Bred Cows - Bred to Vision Unanimous

Vision Unanimous

The pasture bred commercial heifers will sell in groups of fi ve or more in a numeric gate cut starting with Lots 453-474. We have ranked them for size and quality. The heifers sell without registration papers, but all are registered Angus heifers. The heifers are bangs vaccinated, and have been given Bovi-shield Gold 5 FP VL5 HB, injectable Dectomax, their fi rst Scour Bos 9 vaccination, and been poured for lice. The bred heifers are all negative for PI-BVD and BLV. Lots 453-474 (22 head) are ultrasounded safe to pasture service and were synchronized to calve approximately March 25- April 25. They are exposed to sons of McCoy and Lincoln. The McCoy and Lincoln daughters are exposed to a son of Chisum 255 or Courage. The winning bidder may take all the pasture bred heifers. Registration papers are available for an additional $250/head.

The AI bred cows will sell in groups of fi ve or more starting with a numeric gate cut with lots 501-505. We ranked them for quality by age. The cows are purebred Angus selling without their registration papers. These females are on the same vaccination program as our entire cow herd and were given Bovi-shield Gold 5 FP VL5 HB, injectable Dectomax at preg check, and been poured to control lice. The cows are all negative for PI-BVD, BLV, and these cows have tested negative for Johnes every year. The cows were too advanced in pregnancy to ultrasound but are presumed AI bred based on our vets fetal aging. They should calve from March 15-30 and are AI safe to Vision Unanimous. The winning bidder has the option to take all of the bred cows (15 head). Registration papers are available for an additional $250/head.
