WordS from thE Editor
Janet AdamanaEditor-in-Chief
It’s strange to think, SounD, PHRASE & FuRy was once just a simple little dream, just a tiny spark of an idea. All it took was one small shard of hope, one tiny little push, to pierce my heart, entrap my mind and all together create a colourful explosion of beauty that is a uni-verse full of grand possibilities. All it took was someone to tell me, “It would be a waste not to try.”
There is a common desire so many of us hold: to create something, be something, experience something that will make our lives so much more than what we simply see. It is the dream of fulfilling one’s biggest dream. And after a few short months, SounD, PHRASE & FuRy, pushed me (and my colleagues) forth. I, once a young aspiring music journalist sprouting in a time when magazines and newspapers were taking backseats to blogs and twitter feeds, had tried my best to adapt my aspirations to this fast-paced computerized world. And to this day, I vow to never stop trying. Since the launch of the magazine, I have felt eternally fueled by undying passion and this infectious idea that nothing is impossible. The world we live in tends to bend and break those who dare to dream, but those of us at SounD, PHRASE & FuRy know the payoff is in ultimately giving in to the unceasing desire to just try and try, despite the sacrifices, the troubles and tough times.
We have spent the last year learning how to man the curves, and create something that stands alone, immensely significant in this new internet-based world. This magazine is a result of years of defining what it is SounD, PHRASE & FuRy is meant to be, finding a way to achieve it and taking sound advice to “just do it.”

history In early 2011, Winnipeg-based writ-er, Janet Adamana, started a small music blog, entitled T up the V. The premise was to focus solely on inde-pendent and unsigned artists from all over north America.
After two years, and a new name, SounD, PHRASE & FuRy has grown from a small blog to a bi-monthly magazine, focusing on in-dependent/unsigned artists and in-dusty professionals from all around the world.
After graduating from Creative Communications at Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Janet Adamana did what most of her fellow grad-uates did not. Instead of toting piles of resumes, scheduling luncheons with industry profession-als and flexing her newly acquired social skills at networking parties, the now SPF editor-in-chief, packed up her car and hit the road.
Armed with nothing more than a suitcase full of clothes, a back seat full of snacks and a heart filled with the need to escape the intimidating realm of job-hunting, Adamana was headed to her first out-of-city concert.

hiStory
This one $13 show, sparked a two-year stint of con-stant concert chasing and traveling. Adamana at-tended show-after-show, in several different states and provinces. She experienced first hand, the im-pact live music had, not only on herself but also ev-eryone involved, from fans to bands and everyone in between.
Inspired by her travels, Adamana began T up The V, a small music blog dedicated to promoting up-and-coming musicians from all over north America. The blog ran from early 2011 to early 2012, when it was then renamed SounD, PHRASE & FuRy.
The new moniker was inspired by a live performance video by new Zealand’s indie-pop troupe, The na-ked and Famous. After a few less than encouraging months of low readership, lack of a clear vision, and next-to-no motivation to continue writing, Ada-mana accidently stumbled upon the video of TnAF performing their poignant hit, “no Way.”
There was something embedded within that par-ticular performance that sparked a flame and fu-eled a clear vision of what SPF was to become. “The light bulb went on in my head and I thought, I know what I have to do,” recalls Adamana. “It inspired the whole concept behind the blog and eventually the magazine, which was this ode to all the artists who, through some miraculous strumming and bind-ing of noisy instruments can create something that touches people, and not only that but also picks them back up. I was in this spot where I didn’t really know what I was going to do, and just hearing that one song, it was like my entire future just opened
up and I saw all the possibilities.” Pumped with new found inspiration, Adamana worked relentlessly for an entire year, building and melding the blog into the indie support system that she envisioned it to become, opening its scope to artists and readers from all around the world.
A fan of old school media, Adamana also wanted to create an ode to the ideas of the world she grew up in. She transferred the blog into a digital magazine, successfully melding favourable elements of new-age and old school. “I love the idea of blogs. They’re so quick and convenient. But I have always loved magazines, ever since I was a little kid,” says Ada-mana. “The glossy pages, the super large photos and the creativity with colours and layout. Magazines are more than just words on a page, they are works of art.”
SounD, PHRASE & FuRy magazine was official-ly launched in January 2013. not only did it become a more structured way of promoting musicians and industry professionals, a scheduled routine for readers, musicians and fans to follow, but it is also a fun and creative way to keep ahead of the curve and stand out in the world wide web.
After only a few short years, SounD, PHRASE & FuRy has grown to become more than just a name of a music blog and online magazine. It is a term that perfectly encapsulates the essence of creating music, having passion, and stands as an ode to the independent artists and professionals who write and create to make a significant impact within the scene and community.
