song you like (ex. Change the words to “Row your boat” and use words that describe how you feel). Remember when singing to sit or stand up straight, chest out and shoulders back. Try and remember the good posture and breathing we have covered in class. Listen to the music, the melody being sung and match your voice. If you have any questions, please contact your school music teacher: Sharon Hill School: Mr. Angelucci [email protected] or [email protected] Darby Township School: Ms. Manko-Morgan [email protected] or [email protected] Harris School: Mr. Scholl [email protected] or [email protected] Delcroft School: Mrs. Sprague [email protected] or [email protected] We will end all our Music activities with a short Music and Mediation activity. Music Meditation Here are a few quick and easy ideas to get you started. Students can… - close their eyes and count their breaths for a specified amount of time. - close their eyes and go to the most peaceful place they can imagine. - spend time focusing solely on the sounds they hear in their environment. - imagine that peace and calm enters their body with every breath, while stress and anxiety are released on each exhale. - pay particular attention to any stress or tension in specific body locations (neck, shoulders, legs, etc) while intentionally releasing that tension. - Incorporate family members by having one guide students to breathe in and out with a certain number of counts on each inhale and exhale. - You can look up music and meditation for children on youtube to have accompanying music but it is not necessary to have music. You can also use music you have already have that you find beneficial Some sites are https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk_qU7l-fcU (no music but guided narration throughout) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HrkXT5Bc9E (music based) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pd4j9osCNT4 (music based)

Remember that your mindfulness and meditation activity can be as short or as long as you’d like. Even if you only have ONE minute after lunch or before bedtime or in the morning; it is beneficial to use that one minute purposefully. Students should close their eyes, count their breaths, be mindful of the sounds in the environment, or take themselves to a relaxing destination. If one minute can make a difference, imagine what 10 minutes each day might do?

the sounds they produce. Also continue to use the pitch and comparing games to train your ear Please go to Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCTeSjpDsIs This video is the Army band demonstrating woodwind and percussion instruments. Listen to each instrument and try to memorize what the instrument looks like and the sound it produces. ( at the bottom of this lesson you will find informative worksheets pertaining to Woodwinds)

2) After your review go to this web page https://www.virtualdrumming.com/drums/online-virtual-games/online-virtual-games-drums.html This is a virtual Drum set. Remember last week’s lesson on Percussion instruments. Now you can hear the various drums and cymbals through this “virtual” Drum kit The next instrument will be a Theremin. A Theremin is an electronic musical instrument controlled without physical contact. This is a virtual Theremin that you can use to create different sounds and even play melodies. You can download the app and record yourself as well https://femurdesign.com/theremin/ 3) Continue to sing some of your favorite songs. It can be from a Disney movie or just try singing

your alphabet and numbers. Remember when singing to sit or stand up straight, chest out and shoulders back. Try and remember the good posture and breathing we have covered in class. Listen to the music, the melody being sung or performed and match your voice Attempt this new song “Somethings Never Change” using proper technique and breathing (link for song below) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVW9QOIeqQg&list=PLxhnpe8pN3TkenzFLTlz2hUd6_BZu-5Zv&index=4

1) Go to the website https://www.khanacademy.org 2) Click on “Courses” in the upper left hand corner. 3) Click on “Arts and Humanities” in the list of courses offered. 4) Scroll down the list and click on “Music.” 5) Click on “Instruments of the Orchestra.”

Week two is all about the instruments in the Brass family. There are eight videos that you will watch and reflect upon: French horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Bass Trombone and Tuba. Each video is between 5 and 15 minutes long. You will see various demonstrations of the instruments being played alone, and with the orchestra. You will also hear from amazing musicians that play them. For each of the five instruments in the brass family, list at least 3 facts about the instrument. At the end of the week you should have 15 facts about the instruments in the woodwind family. Once you have listened to each instrument, watched how it was played, and heard some facts about the instrument itself, which instrument would you choose to play out of the eight, and why? What makes you want to play that instrument over the others? The next two activities are an expansion of the lesson and not required: 1.) Go to www.classicsforkids.com Go to Games and click on “Open Instruments of the Orchestra.” Here you will see the instruments are arranged in the orchestra. Click on the section of the string family, and see where they sit in the orchestra.

Page 8: Special: Teachers: Mr. Angelucci, Mrs. Manko-Morgan, Mr ......Use game 1(pitch game) and game 2 (comparing game). The pitch game (#1) you will compose your own melodied by selecting

2.) Go to https://listeningadventures.carnegiehall.org/index.aspx This is a fun game that will reinforce the instrument families and the instruments in each. You will take an adventure on a musical safari while hearing the piece Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra by Benjamin Britten. You will need to set up a username and password so that you can continue the game throughout the weeks, without having to restart each and every time. 3.) Go to www.musictechteacher.com Click on the Lessons/Quizzes tab. The first column has different games under “Quizzes-Instruments.” Check out one of the games to test your knowledge on what you have learned so far If you have any questions, please contact your school music teacher: Sharon Hill School: Mr. Angelucci [email protected] or [email protected] Darby Township School: Ms. Manko-Morgan [email protected] or [email protected] Harris School: Mr. Scholl [email protected] or [email protected] Delcroft School: Mrs. Sprague [email protected] or [email protected]

1) Go to the website https://www.khanacademy.org 2) Click on “Courses” in the upper left hand corner. 3) Click on “Arts and Humanities” in the list of courses offered. 4) Scroll down the list and click on “Music.” 5) Click on “Music Basics.” 6) There are two sections in Music Basics: Notes and Rhythm, and Reading Music. We will be

taking a look at both sections this week. This week we are going to take a look at meters (time signatures) of different beats/feel, as well as learn about the Bass Clef. The Treble clef is for higher pitches, while the Bass Clef is for the lower pitches. Some instruments play in only one clef, while other instruments play in both clefs. If you need a review/reinforcement, take a look at Lessons 1 and 2 of Notes and Rhythm, as well as Reading Music. This week we will take a look at Lesson 3 in both categories. Lesson 3: Meters in double and triple time, upbeats A time signature are the two numbers at the beginning of a piece of music. The top number tells how many beats are in a measure, while the bottom number tells which note will equal one beat. 4/4 means that there are 4 beats in each measure and the quarter receives on beat. 4/4 time is also known as Common Time. 2/2 means that there are 2 beats in each measure and the half note receives one beat. Duple meters are divisible by 2. Triple meters are divisible by 3.

Page 10: Special: Teachers: Mr. Angelucci, Mrs. Manko-Morgan, Mr ......Use game 1(pitch game) and game 2 (comparing game). The pitch game (#1) you will compose your own melodied by selecting

Lesson 3: Bass clef, grand staff and the octave The line notes for the Bass clef are GBDFA (Great Big Dogs Fight Animals). The space notes for the Bass clef are ACEG (All Cows Eat Grass). An octave is an 8-note interval, or the distance between two notes. When the Treble clef and the Bass clef are placed together, it forms the Grand Staff. The treble clef is for treble instruments (higher pitched instruments) and the bass clef is for bass instruments (lower pithed instruments. Most instruments play in one of the above clefs, while other instruments use both clefs to read their music. To help put it all together, here are some great games/activities that will help solidify the concepts of the first two lessons of musical notation: www.musictechteacher.com *Click on Lessons/Quizzes and select games from under “Quizzes-Music Notes.” There are some games that will help with understanding and practicing the bass clef: “Identify Bass Clef Notes Story; Bass Clef Sports Blaster; Bass Invaders; Bass Clef Words; Bass Clef Word Warrior. *To reinforce ties and slurs, check out the game “Ties and Slurs” under “Quizzes-Intervals-Scales-Chords. https://classicsforkids.com *Click on the Games tab There are three activities that will help with the material that was gone over in Khan Academy: “Play Note Names,” “Match the Rhythm,” and “Compose your Own Music.” Have fun. Be Musical. Enjoy creating!
