Professional Learning

1. How can we provide professional development for G/Tteachers?

• ESCs and LEAs are still providing online training sessions. Please see the COVID-19 Resources by Region webpage, on the TEA Coronavirus (COVID-19) Support and Guidance website under Instructional Continuity for additional region-specific guidance and resources.

2. Will the agency waive the G/T professional developmentrequirements for the 2020-2021 school year?

• TEA is not considering a waiver of G/T professional development requirements at this time.

G/T Foundational Training Requirements

Qualifications

• Currently that decision rests with local school districts.

Law & Rule:

Best Practice:

• Who is qualified to provide the 30-hour training? Who may offer the 30-hours of professional development required for G/T teachers?

• The basic 30-hour G/T training should be provided by an expert in gifted education who, at the very least, is an experienced, trained (according to TAC 89.2) G/T teacher. Professional development providers should have passed the G/T TExES or have an advanced degree in Gifted Education.

6-hour G/T Update Training

Required G/T updates should meet some or all the following criteria:

Designed specifically to prepare teachers to meet the needs of gifted students

Designed specifically to provide teachers with content knowledge above and beyond that gained in a typical undergraduate teacher-preparation program

Designed based on identified needs either of the district or G/T students

Designed to increase understanding of nature and needs of G/T students

Provided by an expert in gifted education

Provided by an expert (practitioner-level) in the content area

Professional Learning Calendar

• The district defines the annual professional development calendar.

• Efforts should be made to ensure that a teacher receives a six-hour update early enough in the year to use the strategies and techniques they learned with the students they are currently teaching.

Family and Community Involvement

1. What do we communicate to students’ families around the identification/selection/delivery of G/T services?

LEAs should communicate the identification process for newassessments and continuation of administration in the spring of 2020,especially to families of students referred for G/T identification whohave not yet been assessed. LEAs should communicate the G/T transferpolicies and procedures detailing the necessary documentation. LEAsshould communicate the appeal process during the closures of schools. For the families of G/T students receiving services, LEAs should provide information pertaining to the continuation of services through theLEAs’ approved instructional plans.
