Dear young rheumatologists andresearchers in rheumatology,

We are happy to present you a new issue of

EMEUNEWS to introduce EMEUNET Subgroups

and activities.

The EMEUNET Working Group represents the

EMEUNET Community, undertakes the

organisational role and currently has 43 people

from most of the 21 EULAR Countries. The work

is divided among 7 Subgroups to cover the wide

aims of EMEUNET. From education to peer

mentoring, from country liaison to social media,

EMEUNET Subgroups ensure the growth of

EMEUNET community and promote interaction

and networking among members.

If you would like to join the EMEUNET Working

Group and be actively involved in the Subgroups’

activities keep an eye on emails from EMEUNET

and do not miss next call for application! If you

already applied but have not been selected, this

does not preclude you to apply again the

following year.

In this issue you will also find details about

upcoming educational events.

If this is your first contact with EMEUNET, we

invite you to explore more and join us via our

website (http://emeunet.eular.org). If you are

already part of our community, we kindly remind

you that sharing is caring. Spread the word about

our activities and work and help us reach more

young rheumatologists and researchers.

We hope that you enjoy reading this Newsletter

and would be happy to receive any comments or

EMEUNET is a network of young clinicians and researchers in the field of rheumatology in Europe.

The main objectives of EMEUNET are to enhance the quality of education and to promote

research and create collaborations among emerging rheumatologists and researchers.

None of these objectives could be fulfilled without the work and enthusiasm of the people involved

in the 7 subgroups that form the Working Group of EMEUNET: Education, Peer Mentoring,

Newsletters, Social Media, Visibility, Country Liaisons and Global Affairs.

EMEUNET subgroups are enthusiastically engaged in several activities, and the list of current and

upcoming projects has quickly expanded over the past few months.

With all these initiatives and activities that are presented in this Newsletter, we hope that

EMEUNET will continue to be embraced by the young rheumatology community and more and

more young clinicians and researchers in rheumatology will become involved in rheumatology

education, research and EULAR, making EMEUNET a successful and influential resource that

fosters new and long-term collaborative endeavours and ensures that excellence in European

Rheumatology and EULAR is maintained.

EDUCATION

Leader: Victoria Navarro, MD

Aim of the Education Subgroup is to improve the clinical and scientific

know how to do amongst young rheumatologists/researchers (trainees

and specialists included, <40 years) working in the field of rheumatology

in Europe and beyond. When EMEUNET started its activities, a large

online survey (more than 700 participants) was used to assess the

educational needs of young rheumatologists and researchers. The

educational sub-group was formed to meet these needs, by providing

information about existing educational programmes as well as funding

opportunities (by EULAR and other organizations) and develop new

educational opportunities. Over the past years, EMEUNET has expanded

and is now engaged in several educational activities, in conjunction with

ESCET, the EULAR standing committee of education, and other EULAR

committees. Having a large group of young rheumatologist and scientists

(>1300 members), we are able to provide valuable information (via the

means of online surveys, direct contacts with members in different

countries etc.) in order to tailor the educational offer from EULAR to the

real needs of young rheumatologists. Successful ongoing projects are:

EMEUNET-EULAR fellow sessions: proposing clinical and scientific

sessions at the annual EULAR meetings with special interest for young

attendees; EMEUNET members in EULAR recommendation committees;

EMEUNET educational calendar: to inform about educational events and

deadlines; EMEUNET ambassador programme: to find your way through

the big meetings; EMEUNET/EULAR immunology course (the 1st

Immunology Course will take place in April 2016). New projects are:

reports from educational activities: collecting reports from previous

attendees to educational activities; EMEUNET educational portfolio: to

keep the informative data; European/EULAR rheumatology certificate: to

harmonize training across Europe.

Rucsandra is a resident in

Rheumatology and PhD

student from Romania. She

is currently working as a

clinical science research

fellow within the Division of

Rheumatology, University

Hospital Zurich. Her main

areas of interest are

systemic sclerosis and

other connective tissue

diseases. She is the

Country Liaison for

Romania.

COUNTRY LIAISON

Leader: Rucsandra Dobrota, MD

The aims of the Country Liaison subgroup are: 1) To promote EMEUNET

and to distribute EMEUNET/EULAR information. Reach & attract the

young rheumatologists/researchers (trainees and specialists included,

<40 years of age) in every country to become EMEUNET members and

to participate in EMEUNET activities. For this, we support and work

closely with the Country Liaisons, on whom we rely to: i. Disseminate

information prepared by EMEUNET (e.g. newsletters, courses, job

opportunities, surveys) to the young rheumatologists and researchers in

rheumatology within their country; ii. Perform and report back on national

activities meant to increase the visibility and adherence to EMEUNET

within their countries; iii. Keep in contact and give feedback/suggestions.

2) To encourage and support the Country Liaisons and keep the Country

Liaison network active. Active promotion of EMEUNET at a national level:

visibility at national meetings, comprehensive and updated e-mail lists

etc. For this, we send out periodical reminders and materials and are

always available for queries. 3) To prepare and update EMEUNET

advertising materials. We have designed a broad choice of posters,

flyers, slides etc. serving as resources for the activity of the Country

Liaisons. 4) To increase the visibility of the Country Liaisons and their

actions. We organize the annual Country Liaison meeting, the Country

Liaisons Newsletter, as well as frequent reports on the Country Liaisons’

actions in the EMEUNET newsletters and social media, in collaboration

with the EMEUNET Newsletter and Social Media subgroups.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Leaders: Vasco Romão, MD (Website); Paul Studenic, MD

(Facebook); Elena Nikiphorou, MD (Twitter)

The EMEUNET website has been online since June 2012 and ever since has

had increasing traffic with an average of 6000 monthly visitors from around the

world. In 2014, we also launched our EMEUNET Facebook and Twitter

platforms to maximise contact with both members and non-members. Our main

goals are to increase EMEUNET’s visibility and reach out to all rheumatologists

and researchers in Rheumatology across the world. We also represent the

“voice” of Annals of Rheumatic Diseases (ARD) on social media platforms,

through close collaboration with the ARD Team of the British Medical Journal

(BMJ) with the aim of enhancing the profile and activity of the Journal on these

platforms. We are responsible for managing and updating material presented

on all three Social Media Platforms: the website, Facebook page and Twitter

account. You can find all the up to date information on the website and easily

connect with other members with similar clinical or academic interests.

Facebook and Twitter are readily accessible platforms, very intuitive, where you

can follow all ongoing activities, deadlines and projects while they are actively

taking place! For this reason, we strongly encourage all our members and also

non-members to join and engage in these initiatives. Our aims include reaching

out to as many young rheumatologists as possible and through our EMEUNET

Country Liaisons and rheumatologists/scientists within their respective

countries to use Twitter and Facebook for sharing information from national,

international conferences and other meetings of interest. Our ultimate goal is to

support EMEUNET in its initiative to keep every young rheumatologist in the

world informed and involved in educational, clinical and research activities.

Through our collaboration with ARD/BMJ, we hope to promote high quality

clinical and research material and engagement of the wider rheumatology

community on social media platforms. If you have any information you think

might be interesting for us to publish, please do not hesitate to contact us via

any of our social media platforms or by email ([email protected]).

We are always happy to receive any comments/suggestions you may have!

VISIBILITY

Leader: Caroline Ospelt, MD PhD

The visibility Subgroup’s tasks mainly comprise the setting up of the

EMEUNET corner at the EULAR annual meeting and to organize social

events for EMEUNET members at EULAR and ACR annual meetings.

The EMEUNET corner is the ‘headquarter’ for EMEUNET members at

the EULAR meetings, where they can meet, get informed and discuss.

EMEUNET social events are organized in every city where EULAR/ACR

meetings take place. We already organized walking tours, biking tours,

boat trips and surf courses and there are many more to come.

NEWSLETTER

Leader: Alessia Alunno, MD

The EMEUNET Newsletter ‘EMEUNEWS’ is aimed at spreading any

information considered useful to young rheumatologists/researchers of

the EMEUNET community. Together with EMEUNET´s Social Media,

EMEUNEWS can be considered the “voice” of EMEUNET. EMEUNEWS

is released monthly except June and November when the largest

congresses in Rheumatology, EULAR and ACR, take place. The

Newsletters promote EMEUNET’s visibility, by introducing working group

members (August issue) and country liaisons (March issue) as well as by

showing the different activities of the Subgroups (February issue). They

also report about Do-Not-Miss Abstracts (May and October issues) and

Abstract Highlights (July and December issues) of EULAR and ACR. All

EMEUNEWS issues also include general information about EMEUNET,

upcoming events, abstract deadlines, fellowships, courses, grants, etc.

For the production of EMEUNEWS, all EMEUNET working group

members are involved by volunteer work. Recently, a new format of

EMEUNEWS, the press review, has been started and is planned to be

released three times per year (January, April and September issues).

The Global Affairs Subgroups was launched in 2012 due to the fact that

10-15% of EMEUNET members are non-European members.

The objectives of this SG are: to identify and deal with globalization in

EMEUNET; to interact with Young PARE, a working group of the EULAR

Standing Committee of PARE aiming to communicate the specific needs

of young people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases; to

develop interactions between other Young Specialists Organizations in

Europe, such as nephrology, pediatric rheumatology, gastroenterology,

immunology/allergy; to promote the development of a European-wide

network of young clinicians from various fields and specialties.

The aim of this annual multi-level course is to cover the whole spectrum of conditions inwhich musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) could be used in rheumatology practice andresearch.

The intermediate course (for up to 60 participants with some experience in MSUS)aims at consolidating standardised MSUS scanning methods according to EULARguidelines, as well as describing and identifying musculoskeletal lesions/abnormalitiesby US and knowing the role of MSUS in different musculoskeletal pathologies(inflammatory, degenerative and/or traumatic). The standardised approach in the studyof the various anatomic regions as well as the future development of US technique andits role as a research tool is discussed.

The advanced course (for up to 60 participants with considerable experience in MSUS)focuses on difficult issues within MSUS and emerging research fields in MSUS (contrastenhanced, 3D, quantification of inflammation). This includes time for discussion withexpert rheumatologists and radiologists in MSUS.

Next EULAR Ultrasound Course will take place on 5-7 June 2016 in London/Leeds, UK

In addition to the ultrasound course, EULAR also offers a training programme forultrasound trainers in rheumatology. The course will usually be held during two half-daysprior to the EULAR Congress in the same city and accommodate some 35 participants.Participants should have attended the advanced EULAR Ultrasound Course first or havegained similar experience. The course is mainly addressing rheumatologists who are planning to organise anultrasound course under the auspices of EULAR and aims at improving teaching skillsfor both lectures and hands-on ultrasound workshops. Participants will also learn how toorganise an ultrasound course and evaluate the skills of sonographers. If you are interested visit: http://www.eular.org/edu_course_ultrasound_trainer.cfm

The aim of this intensive and interactive EULAR CAP course is to provide all participantswith an update on the power of the safe and non-invasive nailfoldvideocapillaroscopy (NVC) technique in the field of rheumatic diseases, in particularfor the early diagnosis of the scleroderma spectrum diseases, its predictability andprognostic value, as well as its role as a tool for the therapeutic follow up.

Participants will be fully involved in interactive theoretical and practical capillaroscopicsessions (Learning and Testing sessions) engaging a large number of rheumaticpatients. Updated clinical sessions concerning the diagnostic/prognostic value of NVC indiseases such as systemic sclerosis and the effects of targeted therapies onmicrocirculation and immune-inflammatory reaction will represent a stimulating gym basedon large clinical cases discussion. Links between the CAP patterns and biomarkers suchas autoantibodies will also be updated since evoluted. In particular, reading and scoring (manual and automated systems) of thevideocapillaroscopic images of living patients will be discussed and their predictive value toidentify possible clinical complications (i.e. digital ulcers in systemic sclerosis, lunginvolvement etc.) will be analyzed including in the pediatric population. Recent internationalstudies reported (CAP study) about new predictive models or index based oncapillaroscopic analysis. New sessions on practical evaluation of the peripheral bloodflow by laser doppler and LASCA imaging have been introduced. Lessons andpractical session on skin ultrasound (US) evaluation will be also available and will becombined with the severity of the videocapillaroscopic images (patterns) in living patients.Important links between CAP, Laser blood flow analysis and clinical results of therapies, will be presented and discussed for the follow up of patients. At the end of this top course that is supported by a tutorial team formed by some of thebest worlds experts on the matter, the participants will be able to use the capillaroscopy fortheir day-to-day staging and follow-up in particular of patients affected by sclerodermaspectrum diseases.

Next EULAR Course on Capillaroscopy will take place on 8-10 September 2016 in Genova, Italy

Every year, in spring and autumn, EULAR awards up to 10 training bursaries to applicants from

European countries for clinical or laboratory work (3-6 months) in a unit of another European

country. The objective is to improve the standard of research and care and to foster collaboration

across rheumatological, clinical and research units in Europe. The amount of the bursary depends

of the length of stay and equals EUR 1'000 for travel expenses plus EUR 1'000 per month of stay.

Only persons who work predominantly in the field of rheumatology are eligible for training bursaries,

and only once. The age of the candidate should not exceed 40 years. Bursaries will not be made if

the applicant is already abroad in training. Recipients are asked to submit both a midterm report as

well as a final report to the EULAR Secretariat, focusing on the results they have achieved during

their training. Based on their final report, participants may be given the chance to present their

results in an abstract presentation at the next EULAR Congress.
