Main Frame. The PL61 one-piecemain frame is designed to absorbhigh impact shock loads and twistingforces. Robotic welding provides deeppenetration and consistency, ensuringhigh quality, durability and reliabilitythroughout the structure.

Track Roller Frame. Track roller framesfeature an engineered box-section design,which provides superior strength andresistance to bending. Equalizer barsare pinned in their center to the machinemain frame and at the ends to each trackroller frame. Oscillation is locked outfor greater stability in pipelayingapplications.

Heavy Duty Components. Heavy dutyradiator grill, bottom guards and fueltank guard are available, for additionalprotection in severe applications.

Integrated ROPS. The cab and canopystructures provide roll-over protectionfor the operator.

Operator Station. The operator stationfeatures an ergonomic layout emphasizingsimplicity, ease of use and comfort.Standard air conditioning with enclosedcab, generous legroom and superiorvisibility allow the operator to focuson the job. With more glass area, theoperator station provides a clear viewto the surrounding work site.

Air suspended seat. The CaterpillarC500 Comfort air suspended seat isavailable in cloth or vinyl and is fullyadjustable, for maximum operatorcomfort. A standard lumbar adjustmentprovides excellent lower back support.For comfortable operation in coldweather, a heated cloth seat is available.

Seat-mounted controls. For optimumcomfort and precise control, the PL61features ergonomically designed seat-mounted controls. Seat-mounted controlsisolate vibrations from the operator, andprovide independent seat and controlsadjustment. Individual wrist pads andarmrests can be adjusted independentlyfor optimum comfort.

Electro-hydraulic controls. Provide quicksteering response, precise hook and boomcontrol, and comfortable, low-effortoperation.

Instrument Cluster. The compactinstrument cluster keeps the operatoraware of all vital machine functions.The advanced monitoring system tracksmachine operating conditions and informsthe operator of impending problems.The monitoring system includes:

• Alert indicators: action lamp(3 warning categories), electricalsystem

• Indicators: parking brake, engine oilpressure, engine air filter, hydraulicoil filter, electrical preheat, operatorpresence, machine security system,fuel system service, implementlockout

• Gauges: hydraulic oil temperature,engine coolant temperature, fuel level

• Digital display: service hours,selected forward and reverse speeds

Brake and Decel Pedal. The PL61features a single, combined hystatbrake and decel pedal. Two brakingconfigurations are available throughthis pedal:

• Transmission braking only: As thepedal is pressed, the machine willslow by braking the transmission;no engine decel will occur.

• Transmission braking and enginedecel: As the pedal is pressed, themachine will slow by simultaneouslybraking the transmission and reducingthe engine speed. When the pedalis depressed beyond the detent, theservice brakes will be applied.

Speed and Direction Control.The operator controls the speed of themachine and the direction of travel witha single joystick control located on theleft console. This joystick includes athumb wheel for precise speed control,as well as a convenient button to storeand recall operator-defined, independentoperating speeds for forward and reverse.

Other Cab Features. For optimumoperator comfort, the PL61 operatorstation includes the following amenities:

• Foot rests for slope work

Cat® C6.6 Engine with ACERT™Technology. The Cat® C6.6 is a 6.6 liter(403 in3) displacement, six cylinder,inline configured engine equipped witha Caterpillar Common Rail fuel System.It uses ACERT Technology, a series ofCaterpillar engineered innovations thatprovide advanced electronic control,precision fuel delivery and refined airmanagement, resulting in outstandingperformance and lower emissions.

Design. The C6.6 features a compactdesign with heavy-duty engine featuresfor outstanding durability, reliabilityand performance. The C6.6 incorporatesa new cross flow cylinder head design,a 4 valve head and an ADEM A4electronic controller.

Electronic Controls. The C6.6 enginesuse advanced electronic controllers,which have a proven track record forperformance and reliability. ADEM A4Electronic Control Module (ECM)receives data from engine-mountedsensors and adjusts critical parametersto maintain optimum performance.These adjustments also optimize fueleconomy and emissions compliance.Electronics also make engines easierto troubleshoot and repair.

Fuel Delivery. Fuel is introduced inthe combustion chamber in a numberof precisely controlled microbursts.Injecting fuel in this way allows forprecise shaping of the combustionprocess. The ADEM™A4 moduledirects the injectors to deliver precisequantities of fuel at exactly the righttimes during combustion for optimumefficiency and performance.

Air Management. The C6.6 usesa turbocharger fitted with a smartwastegate to give precise control of theboost pressure. Over the entire engineoperating ranges the result is improved:Throttle response, lower fuel consumptionand optimized engine performance.A new cross-flow design in the cylinderhead facilitates air movement, whiletighter tolerances between the pistonand cylinder liner are reducing blowby gases.

Turbocharged and Aftercooled. A well-matched turbocharger and air-to-airaftercooler results in higher powerwhile keeping rpm steady and exhausttemperatures low.

Torque Rise. The direct injectionelectronic fuel system provides acontrolled fuel delivery increase asthe engine lugs back from rated speed.This results in increased horsepowerbelow rated power. A combination ofincreased torque rise and maximumhorsepower improves response andprovides greater drawbar pull.

Cooling System. The cooling system isa single coolant unit including hydraulicoil cooler, radiator, ATAAC and faninstallation. Aluminum cores andhydraulically driven demand fan provideoptimum cooling and fuel efficiency.

Electric Fuel Priming Pump. A standardelectric fuel priming pump is locatedin the primary fuel filter base above thecombined water separator/primary fuelfilter. A switch enables to easily primethe fuel system after a fuel filter service.

Hydrostatic Drive. The electronicallycontrolled hydrostatic drive systemautomatically maintains engine speedto match the power requirements ofthe application for peak performance.The hydrostatic drive train also offersindependent power and control of eachtrack, for fast acceleration, infinitelyvariable speed control and on-the-go,direction changes for each track.The operator can command smooth“power turns” or even counter-rotationof the tracks for precise steering controlin tight areas. The Caterpillar hydrostaticdrive system manages itself, freeing theoperator to concentrate on using theCaterpillar Pipelayers superb agility,speed, and maneuverability to do moreproductive work.

Infinitely Variable Speed Control.Hydrostatic drive provides infinitespeed selection from 0 to 10 km/h(0 to 6.2 mph) in forward and reverse.This lets the operator select the optimumspeed for ground and job conditions.It also eliminates power interruptionduring shifting.

Ground Speed Balancing. Hydrostaticdrive provides a completely “step-less”transmission of power and automaticallymatches travel speed and implementloads for increased efficiency andeasier operation.

Drive TrainThe PL61 features an electronically controlled hydrostatic drive system with independentpower and control of each track for fast acceleration, variable speed control, and on-the-godirection changes.

SystemOne™ Undercarriage.Exclusively for Caterpillar machinesthe design extends system life andreduces operating costs.

• Long-life Sprocket. Extended lifesprockets will outlast two or moretracks. The rotating bushingtechnology extends life.

• Guiding System. The guidingsystem contacts link rails insteadof pin ends and helps keep the trackwithin the roller system. The resultis improved track guiding.

• Rollers. The increased flangediameter on the rollers provideoptimum guiding and longer life.

• Carrier Rollers. Redesigned carrierrollers are factory sealed and servicedas a unit. The larger diameter providesextended wear to better matchundercarriage system life.

• Idlers. The center tread idlerscontact only the bushing – not thelinks – eliminating scalloping andproviding more guiding to the linkassembly. The idlers last longerbecause they contact a rotatingbushing instead of a link rail.

• Cartridge Joints. Factory-sealedcartridge joints are laser weldedto control end play. They offerimproved seal integrity through aninnovative new sealing system anddo not depend on the link interfaceto remain sealed. As with all Catundercarriage products, they arefilled with special oils.

• May be used in any application.

• The track roller frames are weldedand have a box section design, whichprovides strength and resistance tobending without adding extra weight.

• The track adjuster and mechanicalrecoil spring and grease filledadjustment cylinder which allowsthe idler to move forward and backto maintain proper track tension asit absorbs undercarriage shock.

Undercarriage Arrangements. Narrowshipping width arrangement

• Narrow track shoes and frameprovides shipping width under 3 m(9.8 ft) without disassembly.

LGP (Low Ground Pressure)arrangement

• Specially designed to work in softunderfoot conditions.

• Wide track shoes, a longer trackframe and a wider gauge increasetrack contact area and reduce groundpressure for excellent flotation.

Complete Guarding. Caterpillarundercarriages are designed with fulllength guarding on top of the trackroller frame. This prevents abrasivematerials from being recirculatedin the track.

Roller Frames. Roller frames attach tothe tractor by a pivot shaft and pinnedequalizer bar.

Easy Diagnostics. The CompactInstrument Cluster allows for quickidentification of problems and its cause,utilizing a three level warning system.This monitoring system can easily beupgraded by flashing software.

Engine Compartment. All the regularengine maintenance is made through alarge, hinged door located on the leftside of the machine. This compartmentgives access to the engine fuel filtersand water separator, the engine oilfilter, the engine oil dipstick and filler,the electric fuel priming pump, and theengine air pre-cleaner and filters.

Cooling Package. Cores and fan areaccessible from ground level, for easycleaning and maintenance. Opening theradiator front grid will allow full accessto the engine fan. The fan is mountedon a swing-out door that will provideaccess to the cores. The other side of thecores is accessible through the enginecompartment.

Grouped Pressure Taps. Pressuretaps allow for quick measure andtroubleshooting of the hydraulicsystem. These pressure taps are alllocated in the left service access door,and are accessible from ground level.

Ecology Drains. Ecology drains providean environmentally safer method todrain fluids. They are included on theradiator (coolant) and the hydraulictank, and for the engine oil change.

Product Link. This system streamlinesdiagnostic efforts, downtime andmaintenance scheduling and costs byproviding communication flow of vitalmachine data and location informationbetween the dealer and the customer.Product Link provides updates on-servicemeter hours, machine condition andmachine location.

Cat Machine Security System (MSS).MSS uses electronically coded keysselected by the customer to limit usageby individuals or time parameters.MSS deters theft, vandalism andunauthorized usage. Each machinesystem can store up to 255 keys and eachkey can be used on as many machinesas desired. MSS can be controlled by aPersonal Data Assistant. Field installationis available.
