Cat 3176C Engine. The Cat 3176C enginemeets EPA Tier 2, EU Stage II, andJapan MOC Step 2 exhaust emissionregulations. Major features include:

Cylinder Block. Engine durability beginswith its foundation – the engine block.The serpentine design of the 3176Cblock provides maximum strength withreduced weight. A single-piece, deep-skirted design provides a solid base forthe durability you require in today’s572R Series 2.

Electronic Unit Injector (EUI). Themechanically actuated, electronicallycontrolled unit injector combines anelectronic actuator, pump assembly andnozzle into a single, compact unit forreliability and durability. The 3176Cfuel system has been tested in thousandsof engines in some of the most demandingapplications and environments aroundthe world.

Pistons. The two-piece, articulatedpiston design consists of a forged-steelcrown for maximum strength and acast aluminum skirt to reduce weight.A large piston pin holds the crown,skirt, and connecting rod together.The aluminum skirt runs cooler thanconventional pistons, allowing a closerfit to the cylinder liner and providinglonger life. The steel crown handlesthe higher internal pressures oftoday’s engines.

Crankshaft. The crankshaft is steelforging with induction-hardenedjournals and fillets. The wide centerand end main journals and bearings aredesigned to maintain maximum oil filmthickness for excellent lubrication andfor cooling the bearings. The result islong life-to-overhaul.

Power Train The 3176C engine, matched with the torque divider and field proven power shifttransmission, provides years of dependable service.

Two-Pass Cooling System. Using a two-pass system, the AMOCS radiatorprovides a more efficient heat exchange.Coolant is routed from a sectionedbottom tank up the front side, over thetop of the core and down the engineside of the core to the bottom tank.This flow pattern allows the coolantto pass through the radiator twice forbetter cooling.

Modular Design. The cooling elementsare individual core modules connectedto a sectioned bottom tank. There is notop tank to remove.

Design includes:

• Standard 9 steel fins per 2.54 cm(1 in), or an optional 6 steel finsper 2.54 cm (1 in).

• Brass tube construction within eachcore for improved reliability.

Separate Circuit Aftercooling.The 572R Series 2 features a SeparateCircuit Aftercooler. Two of the AMOCScores are dedicated to the aftercoolercoolant circuit to achieve cooler inletair temperatures, which increasesperformance and improves engineemissions. A separate water pump isused to circulate the aftercooler coolant.

Serviceability. Modular core designpermits removal of a single core withoutremoving the entire radiator, reducingrepair costs and downtime. AMOCSeliminates the top tank, side channelsand one sealing surface, making itmore reliable and easier to service.Also features a site gauge for quickservice checks.

Protection From Leaks. To reduce thepotential for coolant leaks, brass tubesare welded to a large, thick header,improving strength of the tube-to-header joint. In conditions whereabrasive materials can be airborne,the attachment sand blast grid shouldbe used to inhibit core damage.

Sand Blast Grid. In applications whereairborne debris is prevalent, radiatorcore protection is a concern. To extendradiator life in harsh applications, a sandblast grid is available as an option todeflect the damaging debris the enginefan propels at the radiator.

Torque Divider. The 572R Series 2single stage torque divider efficientlyresponds to changing load conditions byproviding torque multiplication, thereforeincreasing drawbar power. Providesprotection to the drive train componentsby preventing shock loads. The torquedivider is efficiently matched to thepower train components providing thesuperior performance you need.

Operating Efficiency and DrivelineReliability. The 572R Series 2 torquedivider attains the best combinationof operating efficiency and drivelinereliability. Reduces shock loads to thetransmission and final drives by actingas a hydrodynamic component betweenthe engine and transmission.

Transmission. The proven planetarypower shift transmission features threespeeds forward and three speeds reverseand utilizes large diameter, high capacity,oil cooled clutches. To maximize thelife of the transmission, the planetarydesign distributes loads and stressesover multiple gears.

• Controlled throttle shifting regulatesengine speed during high-energydirectional shifts for smootheroperation and longer component life.

• The transmission and bevel gear setare modular by design and easilyslide into the machine’s rear case.

• Forced oil flow lubricates and coolsclutch packs to provide maximumclutch life.

• Load compensating shifting providessmooth engagement of the clutchesunder loaded conditions.

Load Compensating Shifting. The 572RSeries 2 automatically adjusts the clutchengagement timing according to loadfactor, resulting in improved performanceand operator comfort during speedchanges. Load compensating shiftingreduces the amount of energy dissipatedthrough the clutches helping extendtransmission component life.

Electronic Clutch Pressure Control.The 572R Series 2 has an additionaltransmission-shifting feature for addedperformance and operator comfort –the Electronic Clutch Pressure Control(ECPC). This unique feature providessmoother shifting by regulating andmodulating the individual clutchesbased on current operating conditions.

Steering Clutch and Brakes. Oil cooled,hydraulically actuated, large diameterplates and clutch discs provide highertorque capacity and increased service life.

Thick, Large Diameter Plates andClutch Disks. Thick, large diameterplates and disks provide torque capacityand increased service life.

Brake Housing. Brake housing featurescast rib design for durability.

Cooling Oil Valve. Cooling oil valvescontrol oil flow for brake heat dissipation,extending brake life.

Tapered Roller Bearings. Tapered rollerbearing design provides excellentservice life.

Electronic Steering and TransmissionControls. The 572R Series 2 providesFinger Tip Control for steering. Softtouch buttons located on the steeringcontrols shift the electronicallycontrolled transmission.

Three-Speed Forward/Reverse GearSelection. Three-speed forward/reversegear selection is achieved simply bypressing the yellow speed selectionbuttons. These buttons are integratedinto the Finger Tip Control group.

• Automatic shifting features andreduced lever efforts for easierupshift and downshift, increasedoperator comfort, reduced fatigue,and precise control.

Electronic Clutch and Brake SteeringSystem. The electronic clutch and brakesteering system incorporates low effortfinger tip levers allowing the operatorto work more precisely in close areas,around structures, obstacles and gradestakes. Pulling the left or right fingerpaddle causes the machine to turnaccording to the amount of paddledisplacement.

• Aimed at operator comfort is theelectric vertical adjustment of theFTC control group. This positionsthe operator’s arm for efficientergonomics.

Machine Direction. Moving themachine’s transmission forward/neutral/reverse direction lever controlsmachine direction.

Auto-shift and Auto-kickdown.Auto-shift and Auto-kickdowninclude the following features:

• Auto-shift allows the operator topreselect a forward and reverse gearfor frequent directional changes.The settings include first forwardto second reverse, second forwardto second reverse and secondforward to first reverse.

• Auto-kickdown automaticallydownshifts from any gear whenthe machine detects a significantincrease in load.

Seat. Ergonomically designed and fullyadjustable for maximum comfort.The seat cushion reduces the pressure onthe lower back and thighs while allowingunrestricted arm and leg movement.

Dash. The instrument panel, with easyto read analog gauges and warninglamps, keeps the operator aware ofany potential problems. All gaugesand readouts are easily visible in directsunlight. Auto-shift and Auto-kickdowncontrols are located within easy reachof the operator. New footpads keep theoperator stable and comfortable duringside slope applications.

Caterpillar Monitoring System.Provides gauges to monitor thetemperature of the engine coolant,hydraulic oil, and power train oil,plus the fuel level. Also providesalert indicators that monitor engine oilpressure, inlet manifold temperature,coolant flow, electrical charging system,transmission oil filter, air filter serviceindicator, engine fault warning light,work tool warning indicator, andhydraulic filter.

The monitoring system has:

Low Ground Pressure (LGP)arrangement (optional):

• 760 mm (30 in) single grouserslipped shoes.
