Government of Andhra Pradesh has created basic infrastructure support to sericulture. Today high quality of cocoons and silk yarn produced are compatible to the industry standards. (3) Natural silk varieties i.e., Mulberry, Tasar and Eri are grown in the State. Andhra Pradesh is the second largest producer of mulberry silk in the country, where as in the Tasar silk production, the state occupies 4 th place and Ericulture is in the takeoff stage. Suitable agro climatic conditions and enterprising farmers helped the growth of the industry. The rich silk heritage of the state with its living fabrics from the looms in Pochampally, Gadwal, Dharmavaram and Narayanpet propelled the growth weaving industry – a very strong forward linkage to the reelers and farmers. The state is endowed with 37,000 ha under mulberry crop, covering 1.00 lakh farmers. The sericulture sector contributes 0.8% to the GSDP of the State and employees 4.62 lakh persons under its various activities. Several socio economic studies indicate that the cost benefit ratio of sericulture is the highest among comparable agriculture crops.

Impetus to Kissan nurseries and plantation with saplings.

Chawkie rearing through private Chawkie Rearing Centers.

Improved rearing equipment.

INM and IPM practices for improved soil fertility and ecological

Labour saving devices – shoot feeding and inter-cultivation using cultivators.

Micro irrigation technique for soil moisture conservation.

Promotion of strong post cocoon processing sector under public private partnership.

Establishment of silk exchange in Proddutur (Cuddapah District) for dupion silk trading.

Incentivising bivoltine silk production

Popularizing improved cottage basins, multi-end and fully automatic reeling units with 50% subsidy provision.

Interest subsidy on working capital loans to the silk reelers.

Establishment of private spun mill for promotion of ericulture – a boon to the poor and dry land farmers in the telangana region.

Protecting the interest of weavers cooperatives through the

provision of 10% market development assistance scheme, thrift scheme, insurance to weavers and establishment of common facility centers under Deendayal, Hathkargha ProtsahanYojana.

Promoting reeling sector in the non-traditional areas of coastal and

telangana regions by incentivising reeling activity. Accomplishments

3000 Tassar farmers in the tribal pockets earning an average income of Rs.15,000/- annually.

5,000 Ericulturists in the telangana region earning an additional income of

Rs.6,000/- annually over and above the incomes earned on Tapioca and castor.

324 Silk weavers cooperative societies servicing 3500 of members.

4.62 lakh persons are employed.

Average bivoltine production is 55 Kg for 100 dfls.
