SPAIN: THE GOLDEN AGE
QUALITY, VALUE, CHARACTER
Spanish wine is booming at the moment. You can find
outstanding quality, great value for money and individual
flavours and character right across this vast wine land.
It’s a wine-lover’s paradise with the most land planted
to vines in the world covering its varied geography and
spanning a range of climates. Every time I visit Spain I am
struck by the love of life and creativity exhibited by the
winemakers with whom we work, qualities that shine
through in the generosity and artistry of their wines.
And what is extraordinary is that it is at every level: from
everyday drinking right up to some of the finest wines that
money can buy.
Society members know a good thing when they taste it
and more and more members are buying Spanish wine,
which is, in itself, a great endorsement of the country’s wine
quality. This support from members allows me to go out and
confidently buy the many excellent wines I discover, making
our range one of the UK’s most exciting. Our annual offer
not only celebrates that range but also includes plenty of
new finds from vineyards that stretch from the green, rolling
hills of the north to the arid expanses of the south.
Pierre Mansour
Society Buyer
** Denotes a winner in the annual Wines from Spain Awards
to decide the Top 100 Spanish wines available in the UK.
To help members navigate the selection we have
split the offer into six sections:
A DOZEN EVERYDAY SPANISH REDS 3

outstanding value for money Spain provides between £5.25
and £8.95 per bottle.

LA RIOJA ALTA 6
Next we focus on Rioja featuring traditional and modern
styles from such luminaries as Navajas, Muga and CVNE.
We also include a special spotlight on La Rioja Alta to
celebrate their 125th anniversary. There’s never been a
better time to buy Rioja, and our style guide will help you
choose the type of wine you most enjoy.
SPAIN’S FINEST REDS 7
Spain’s Finest brings together some of the country’s
top red wines outside Rioja, from areas such as Ribera
del Duero, Navarra, Toro and Priorat.
GROUND-BREAKING SPANISH REDS 8
We then showcase three ground-breaking, esoteric,
off-the-beaten-track reds that will satisfy the most
adventurous palates.
SPANISH WHITES: FRESH, FRUITY AND REVITALISING 8-9
Spain’s superb whites must not be overlooked. Try our
selection of fresh macabeo, vibrant Rías Baixas albariño and
oak-aged Rioja to see what we mean.
MIXED CASES 5,6 & BACK PAGE
Finally, five mixed cases ensure that sampling a range
of these delicious wines is both simple and rewarding
(save £9.40 on a mixed case of Spanish whites).
PS We haven’t forgotten about sherry! The excellent quality on
offer across all prices and styles has convinced us that it merits its
own day in the sun and an offer focusing solely on sherry will be
available online later this month.

EVERYDAY REDS £5.25 TO £8.95
The value for money Spain offers is extraordinary: there are few if any other regions that can craft wines of such character and
drinkability at prices that start at just £5.25. With the most land under vine in the world, growers can choose from myriad local
grapes, soils and climates. The result is a range of wines that, despite their humble price tag, offer drinkers plenty of flavour and
individuality. The strength of the pound coupled with a lacklustre domestic Spanish market mean that many members’ favourites
have even come down in price this year.

RIOJA: ‘THERE’S NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO BUY’
For centuries Rioja has been the home of Spain’s finest reds. It’s had its ups and downs over the years but today its star is very much
in the ascendant with a wave of ambition sweeping through the region. With the arrival of two new reserva vintages (2009 and 2010),
both outstanding, an improvement in winemaking (particularly the more judicious use of oak) and the arrival of younger winemakers
obsessed with innovation, there has never been a better time to buy Rioja.
Here we bring you the wines that performed best in our tastings this year, from traditionalists like López de Heredia and La Rioja Alta,
to contemporary, ground-breaking styles crafted to reflect single vineyards and estates, such as Contino and Remelluri. Rioja is now
available in several guises, so once again this year we include our ‘style guide’ to help members make the most appropriate choice.
RIOJA STYLE GUIDE
These are exciting times for Rioja buyers.
For many years Spain’s pre-eminent wine
region has been a byword for traditional
winemaking. In recent times, however, a
new generation of winegrowers has been
challenging the old ways. As a result three
distinct styles have emerged:
Traditional (T): fragrant, silky wines
from long ageing in cask (usually American
oak) and bottle, generally ready to drink
on release.
Modern-classical (MC): younger,
rounder wines that retain the delicious
character of Rioja through cask ageing
(often a mix of American and French oak)
with the structure to develop in bottle.
Modern (M): richer, velvety wines, aged
for less time in newer (usually) French oak,
designed to keep and improve in bottle.
The Society’s Rioja Crianza 2011
Gentle, round and smooth Rioja, carefully
barrel aged in American oak for just under
two years, we blend this specially to reflect
the good old-fashioned style of Rioja. Such
is the careful ageing process this wine has
undergone it could legally qualify to be
labelled as a ‘reserva’. A great buy therefore.

La Rioja Alta is one of the most resolutely traditional of the region’s bodegas. It was founded in 1890 by a consortium of five families,
including the Aranas, Ardanzas and the Alberdis (names immortalised as reservas), and now commands an impressive vineyard
portfolio of over 700ha. The bodega excels in classically styled reservas and gran reservas which are given considerable cask ageing.
What sets this bodega apart from other traditionalists is that the wines succeed in retaining striking vigour and fruit after undergoing
their lengthy period in cask. They are released for sale only when fully ready to drink and always have an air of graceful maturity
about them. In recognition of their 125th birthday this year, we feature eight wines from their portfolio, including some mature
examples that are at their peak now.

Spain has more than 70 wine regions
and hundreds of local grapes. Here we
unearth three esoteric, off-the-beaten
track reds: authentically crafted and
wild in flavour, these will satisfy the most

If sales are anything to go by, the whistle-clean flavours of Spain’s ‘new’ whites have captured members’ imaginations. Most of
the wines below have been selected from regions that benefit from either a cool climate or high altitude, resulting in styles that
rest their quality on vibrancy and refreshment. The use or absence of oak plays a significant role in Spain, so we have indicated
this in the note for each wine. The Spanish Whites Mixed case on the back page provides a good opportunity to try a selection

Ermita del Conde Albillo, Vino de la
Tierra de Castilla y León 2013
Albillo is a minor variety in Spain having
been largely ignored by growers. This is
a rare example of its potential from a
100-year-old vineyard on the border of
Ribera del Duero. Broadly textured with
white fruit and lightly spicy, oaky flavour.
