TEMPLE INSPAIN PROGRAMIf you are committed to developing your Spanishlanguage skills and understanding of Spanishculture, Temple’s Spring Semester in Spain programoffers an unparalleled opportunity for you. Based at the University of Oviedo, this program provides animmersive linguistic and cultural experience, combiningin-class language instruction with a homestay and dailyinteraction with Oviedo citizens. Removed from theheavy tourism of other Spanish towns, Oviedo, thecapital of Asturias, is rich in Spanish history and cultureand offers easy access to nearby cities, the mountainsand the coast. This off-the-beaten-path locationprovides students with a truly authentic experience.You’ll not only improve your language skills, but you’lllearn about the region's traditions, history and cuisine,and you might even learn to cook local dishes from yourhost family!

As a program participant, you will be enrolled in theCursos de Lengua y Cultura Españolas para Extranjeros

program, which for 35 years has offered courses inSpanish language and culture to international students.An integral part of the university, the program offers abroad range of courses, conducted in Spanish at theintermediate and advanced levels, and is housed at La Casa de las Lenguas, a center dedicated to languagelearning on the university’s Campus de El Milán.

WHY OVIEDO?Immerse yourself in Oviedo—the cultural, commercial andadministrative hub of Asturias, located just 20 miles from thebeautiful Bay of Biscay. You will take classes at the Universidad

de Oviedo, one of the top universities in Spain. As a universitycity with so much history, Oviedo offers:

• A wonderful setting to further develop and refine your languageskills. With relatively few English-speaking visitors, you will beable to truly immerse yourself in the Spanish language.

• A city large enough to host a full calendar of events (includingfestivals, museum exhibits, concerts, and sporting events), yetsmall enough to see familiar faces as you walk through town.

• Awe-inspiring natural vistas and endless opportunities forgetting out into nature, with the Cantabrian Sea to the northand the Picos de Europa to the south.

In addition to life in Oviedo, nearby coastal cities such as Gijónand Avilés provide you with further opportunities for explorationand learning about local culture.

• Gijón, the largest city in Asturias and one of the region’s maintourist destinations, features busy beaches, museums, amarina, and frequent cultural events.

• Avilés is close to some of the most beautiful beaches in theregion, and its medieval quarter has been named a site ofhistoric artistic heritage. It is also home to the Centro

Niemeyer, a cultural venue attracting music, theater, and danceperformances; films; and exhibitions from around the world.

ABOUT ASTURIASOviedo is located in theprovince of Asturias, whichboasts a population ofover one million and sits inthe far northwest corner ofthe Iberian Peninsula.Nestled between theCantabrian Sea to thenorth, and the Cantabrianmountain chain to thesouth, Asturias is oftencalled a “natural paradise,”with high mountains,inland sierras, valleys,meadows and woodlands,and a rugged coastal areawith cliffs, beaches andriver estuaries. Asturiasfeatures an Atlanticclimate, with mildtemperatures andabundant rainfall yearround. The origins ofAsturian culture trace backto ancient times, withprehistoric cave paintings,Celtic settlements, Romanbaths, and Romanesqueand Gothic monuments.

MEET THETEMPLEIN SPAINPROGRAMDIRECTORDr. JaimeDurán is a nativeof Oviedo andstudied as an undergraduate atthe University of Oviedo. Heobtained his PhD in Spanishfrom Temple University, wherehe currently teaches when heis not in Oviedo directing theprogram. Dr. Durán developedTemple’s Spain summerprogram as well as the springsemester program. He hasdirected and taught in thesummer program for ten yearsand the spring semesterprogram for the past five. Hisfield of study is Spanishliterature and culture.

PROGRAM FACULTYIn addition to serving asProgram Director, Dr. Duránteaches two courses eachsemester. The remainingcourses are taught by Oviedofaculty, many of whomspecialize in the teaching ofSpanish as a foreign language.

First, I thank you foryour interest in ourSpain programs. If youare looking for a life-changing experience,you have come to theright place. TempleUniversity’s StudyAbroad in Spainsemester and summerprograms are based inthe city of Oviedo (my

hometown), an ideal location forimmersing yourself in Spain's languageand culture. Studying abroad in Oviedowill provide you access to a personaland academic experience which willbecome an integral part of what you willbecome in the future. It will definitelymark a before and an after in your life.Most importantly, it will grant youaccess to a most powerful tool thesedays: perspective, something that givesus reference as to where we stand andwho we are, by becoming aware ofwhere and how other peoples in theworld choose to live their lives andarticulate their existence. Founded in 1575, the University of Oviedo is linked tonumerous outstanding figures of Spanish and Europeanculture, and today, the University of Oviedo is one of thetop universities in Spain, with over 34,000 studentsenrolled in 35 departments, 12 faculties, three highertechnical schools, 17 university schools, and variousuniversity institutes and centers. The university has fivecampuses throughout Oviedo, as well as campuses inthe nearby cities of Gijón and Mieres.

The Temple in Spain program is housed at the Casa de

las Lenguas, on the Campus de El Milán. The Campus de

El Milán, home to the humanities at the university, iscomprised of classrooms and administrative offices, aswell as a library, video library and language laboratory.

ACADEMICPROGRAMTRACKSThe Temple in Spain springsemester program is comprisedof coursework in Spanishlanguage, literature, translation,history, art and culture. You willenroll in one of two tracks,depending on your Spanishlanguage background, as allcourses are conducted inSpanish. A list of courses thatare typically offered within eachtrack follow.

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL SPANISH TRACK• Intended for students who have, at minimum,successfully completed four semesters of university-level Spanish (including Spanish 1001: Basic I, Spanish1002: Basic II, Spanish 1003: Intermediate I, andSpanish 2001: Conversational Review at Temple); or theequivalent.

• Students enroll in five courses from the intermediatetrack course offerings, for a total of 15 credits.

• Please note: students who have not yet taken Spanish2096 and/or Spanish 3001, or the equivalents, prior toenrolling in the Temple in Spain program are required totake these courses while in Oviedo.

GENERAL ACADEMIC MATTERSGenEd for Temple Students

Temple Students who successfullycomplete the Temple in Spainprogram automatically satisfy theWorld Society (GG) requirement of GenEd.

Accreditation

The Temple in Spain program, as an integral part of TempleUniversity, is fully accredited bythe Middle States Association ofColleges and Schools.

Transcript and Transfer of Credits

We advise you to discuss youracademic plan, selection ofcourses, applicability of financialaid, and ultimate transfer of creditwith your home institution prior todeparture for Spain. The creditsyou earn at Temple in Spain willbe recorded on a standard TempleUniversity transcript. If you are not a Temple student, your officialtranscript will be sent directly to your home institution free ofcharge following the conclusion of the program.

In addition to academic courses, theuniversity’s La Casa de las Lenguas

offers cultural programming andorganized leisure activities, enabling youto acquire in-depth knowledge ofvarious aspects of Spanish and Asturianculture. The programs and activitiesalso serve to strengthen your Spanishlanguage proficiency outside of a formalclassroom setting.

Housing Accommodations

The Temple in Spain program offershousing with a local host family. Afteracceptance you will complete ahomestay profile which the University of Oviedo will then use to match youwith a host family. You will be providedwith three meals a day and laundryservice. This living arrangement offers agreat opportunity to practice thelanguage in a natural setting and havedirect access to local lifestyle,gastronomy and social life.

Passports and Visas

Since a visa is required for semesterstudy in Spain, we provide detailed visaapplication instructions once you areaccepted and assist with the visaapplication process. To apply for a visa,you will have to submit your passport,as well as supporting documents soonafter the program application deadline,so be sure to have a valid passport inhand (valid for a minimum of six monthsbeyond the end of your stay in Spain) in early October in order to meet thevisa application deadline. For moreinformation about obtaining or renewing a U.S. passport, please visit:travel.state.gov.

Pre-departure Preparations

Once accepted, we provide you withdetailed materials designed to guideyou in preparing for your time in Spain.Pre-departure materials include:

• Course registration materials

• Billing information with confirmedtuition, program fees, and paymentpolicies

Pre-departure Orientation

A pre-departure orientation program isconducted in Philadelphia by programadministrators and faculty, as well asformer Temple in Spain students. Anonline version of the orientation isavailable for students who do not live inthe Philadelphia area.

On-site Orientation

Upon arrival in Spain, you willparticipate in a five day orientationprogram in Madrid designed tointroduce you to the basics of Spanishculture, language and social etiquette.

The on-site orientation includes:

• City-wide tour, including stops at thePalacio Real de Madrid and thefamous Museo del Prado.

• Trip to the city of Ávila, birthplace ofSaint Teresa, a famous Christianmystic from the 16th century.

• Excursion to Toledo, “The City ofThree Cultures,” where Jews,Christians and Muslims once co-existed peacefully, producing arich and varied mixture of architectureand foodways.

You will then travel to Oviedo as agroup, where the University of Oviedohosts a welcome for students uponarrival to campus. During this time, youwill be introduced to the universitycampus, faculty and staff.

Health Insurance

All Temple University study abroadparticipants will have internationalhealth insurance coverage through HTH Worldwide. Education Abroad will obtain the insurance on your behalf,and the cost will appear on yourprogram bill. While all programparticipants will have coverage fromHTH Worldwide, be sure to maintainyour U.S. health insurance coverage for your time abroad. More detailedinsurance information is provided toaccepted students.

Emergency Services

In the event of an emergency overseas,all students on a Temple Universitystudy abroad program also have access to 24-hour assistance throughInternational SOS. International SOS services help students with travel and security information when away from home.

Program and Housing Deposits

Upon acceptance to the Temple inSpain program, a $200 non-refundableprogram deposit will be due within twoweeks to confirm your participation. A$200 non-refundable housing depositwill also be required by the deadline setfor your semester. Both deposits will be credited to your account.

Cost of Attendance

You will be billed regular TempleUniversity tuition based on residency,plus fees to cover housing and meals,orientation programming, universityservices, and health insurance. You will not be billed for books, airfare, orpersonal expenses. For detailed costinformation, visit our website.

Financial Aid

Temple StudentsTemple University students are eligibleto apply for financial assistance throughregular university channels. Most formsof Temple University financial aid,veteran’s benefits, and awards fromgovernment and private sources areapplicable to study abroad at Temple in Spain.

Non-Temple StudentsStudents from other institutions shouldfirst consult with financial aid officersand study abroad advisors on their owncampuses to find out which sources of aid are available to them and mustapply for financial aid through their own institutions. Federal awards and anumber of state awards are transferableto Temple in Spain with approval of your home institution.

Scholarships

Education Abroad ScholarshipsEducation Abroad offers a $1000scholarship to select Temple students,based upon academic merit andfinancial need. Visit our website forscholarship eligibility requirements and application procedures.

Gilman ScholarshipsGilman Scholarships provide awards for study abroad to U.S. citizens whoare receiving Pell Grants. Selectedrecipients are awarded up to $5,000 to defray the costs associated withstudying abroad. For more information,visit www.iie.org/gilman.

PROGRAMELIGIBILITYThe Temple in Spain program is open toqualified students matriculated at any U.S. college or university.

Eligibility is limited to those students who:

• are currently enrolled as full-time, matriculatedundergraduate students who will have completedat least three semesters of university-level study.

• have a satisfactory scholastic average (minimum2.75 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale from allcolleges/universities attended).

• have, at minimum, successfully completed thefourth semester of university-level Spanish(including Spanish 1001: Basic I, Spanish 1002:Basic II, Spanish 1003: Intermediate I, andSpanish 2001: Conversational Review at Temple);or the equivalent.

Submissions

Please note that the followingsubmissions will be required. If you areapplying online, all applicationrequirements will appear within theonline application system.

• One academic recommendation froma faculty member who has taught youin class

Additional Submissions for Non-Temple Students:

• Official transcripts from allcolleges/universities attended to date

ABOUT TEMPLE EDUCATION ABROADTemple University has a long history of commitment tointernational education and to study abroad in particular.We created our first program in Paris in 1950, a summerprogram that is still active today. Our Temple Romeprogram, founded in 1966, has developed into a vibrantstudy abroad center hosting over 500 students per yearfor semester and summer programs. Another majormilestone was the establishment of Temple UniversityJapan in 1982, which is today a thriving branch campuswith both undergraduate and graduate level programs.Throughout the years, Temple has encouraged faculty todevelop and lead programs around the world to provideadditional opportunities for students; many of ourdedicated faculty have continued their programs yearafter year, one of which is our Spain program.

We in Temple Education Abroad are proud to carry outTemple’s commitment to study abroad by continuallydeveloping and strengthening study abroad programmingnot only for Temple students but for hundreds ofstudents from other U.S. colleges and universities whoparticipate in our programs each year. Our officecurrently administers programs in Brazil, France,Germany, India, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Spain and the United Kingdom, and exchanges worldwide.

SUMMERPROGRAMS

SPANISH LANGUAGE, LITERATURE AND CULTURE Temple in Spain offers a summersession from late June through July.Courses normally include Intermediateand Advanced Spanish, SpanishCulture and Civilization and HispanicReadings. Students take two coursesand earn six credits.

Michelle wears several hats in our office, as theadvisor and coordinator for our summer programsand European exchange programs, and as the officeregistrar. For students studying on our Spainsummer program, she acts as their point of contactfrom the time of application until return from Oviedo.

Michelle has always been passionate about Spanishlanguage and has studied abroad three times. Whilein high school, she spent seven months inVenezuela as an exchange student. As anundergrad, Michelle participated in the LatinAmerican Studies Semester program at Temple,which gave her the opportunity to study abroad inMérida, Mexico. She also studied for a semester inBuenos Aires, taking all of her courses in Spanish ata local university, before earning her degree inPsychology & Spanish.

As a Spanish speaker, Michelle particularly enjoysadvising students who want to improve theirSpanish language skills and immerse themselvesin a Spanish speaking culture. She describes herfavorite aspect of working in Education Abroad: “I love meeting with students who share theenthusiasm I had as an undergrad about goingabroad.”

Outside of the office, Michelle enjoys spending time with her family and friends and exploring new places.
