WORK AT

SPACES

He will be participating in the Axtri Triathlon in Norway. Last year he ran his first marathon in New York and it was such a great experience that he decided to cross out another adventure from his bucket list. “The scenery is simply amaz-ing! We will first swim 1,9 km in the Fjords, next we will cycle 98 km up and down the mountains and finally we will run 21 km”, he says excited.

But adventure is not the only thing that Rogier is after. He is taking part in this triathlon for a good cause. He has been a board member at the Health[e] Foundation for a few years, a non-profit organisation that trains doctors in Third World Countries. When he visited Uganda in 2012 he was deeply impressed by the work the charity does. Every doctor sees on average 1.000 patients a year. The costs for training a doctor are $100 and for this amount you basi-cally help 1.000 people in remote areas. Rogier thought it would be nice to raise money for this charity so he decided to build the website

www.5oceanssports.com where you can read all about the race and the possibilities to donate money for this great cause. It starts at €25 per donation. In the first week they raised over €5.000, something to be very proud of.

Working at Spaces provides Rogier with every-thing he needs. He loves the Spaces concept and he has an office at Zuidas but he admits spending half of his time sitting at the Business Club. The app Toury was developed specifically for the Arnhem- Nijmegen region where many residents prefer to take the car to and from work (<7,5km). The game is part of the campaign ‘Fluitend naar je werk’. Toury is based on the Tour de France; in 6 weeks time you virtually cycle in 24 trips to Paris. You have to cycle to work at least 2 days a week. And the fun part is, you can actually compete with friends and co-workers. The person who has gained the most points after 6 weeks, wins a weekend getaway to Paris during the Tour de France final. And on top of that, each week one lucky person wins a new bicycle.

The app was developed as part of the SLIM program created

Leave the car at home, take your bike and score pointsMaarten Woolthuis (Woolthuiswerkt), a

member of Spaces since 2009, has created

an online game called Toury to stimulate

people to leave the car at home. By choosing

to take your bicycle to work, you score points

and compete with your friends or co-workers.

to improve the economic accessibility of the greater Arnhem-Nijmegen region. For the SLIM program Woolthuiswerkt is responsible for generating a behavourial change within individual drivers, to use transportation in a more responsible and smarter way. This change is influenced by various creative campaigns.

In this edition of the Spaces News we wanted

to share a bit more about our lovely Thirsa.

Thirsa started working at the reception

at Spaces The Hague and is now events

coordinator for Spaces.

Personal service

HI THERE, IT’S NICE MEETING

YOU.

She is true lover of all things nautical, not surprising since she comes from a town on the Dutch coast: Katwijk aan Zee. She used to play basketball but her passion for the beach led her to practice water sports such as surfing and stand-up paddling. You can often find Thirsa by the North Sea, not only to be active, but also to enjoy some fresh seafood. She is a real kroegtijger and always up for a chit-chat. With her warm personality she was a great receptionist and even better suited for her new job as events coordinator.

Want to host your next business event or meeting at Spaces? Contact Thirsa directly at [email protected]

HOST YOUR BUSINESS EVENT AT SPACES

Some Spaces Events Facts to consider:

01.Lots of natural light in our

meeting rooms.

02.Book an entire loft-floor

with spectacular views of

The Hague.

03.Every room has a different

splash of colour.

HOW TO USE A HASHTAG FOR YOUR #EVENT Our members from Setweb created #Hashtag the World; a website that helps you retrieve,

manage and display the best Instagram snapshots with your hashtag.

Spaces uses #workatspaces to capture the essence of working at Spaces: fun, inspiring, creative. We got some great images from our community and we picked a winning picture every week for a month. The lucky Insta-grammer got a special #Hashtag the World mug.

The competition might be over but you can still use #workatspaces every time you take a pic working at one of our beautiful locations. We love seeing how you work.

An evening where our guests, Casper Oppenhuis de Jong of UBER (Spaces Zuidas tenant) and co-founder Frenkel Schonfeld of barter platform CanHav shared their stories through videos & short docs. These videos helped them with their work inspiration, fueled their ambition or just made them laugh. On June 12th we held the second edition; this time with Twitter’s country manager Marc de Vries and Ace&Tate founder Mark de Lange. Marc talked about virals, how to manage a global company to a local audience and what his journey through the tech business world has been so far. Twitter is a tenant of Spaces Zuidas. Mark de Lange discussed how he aims with Ace&Tate to become a lasting, fashionable non-trendy eyewear company with focus on e-commerce.

Next TechTalks will be held in September with guest Etsy (tenant at Spaces Herengracht). For updates, videos and images check www.facebook.com/spacestechtalks

TECHTALKS HOSTED BY SPACES.

On March 27th we hosted the very first

TechTalks together with our partners

Deloitte and Amsterdam Economic Board.

When organizing a business event there are many factors to consider; what is the purpose of your meeting, what do you aim to achieve with your meeting and who are you inviting. After you have ascertained this, next steps are thinking about a date and location. In many occasions, the location of your meeting is also part of the success. The location should be easily reached by various modes of transport, suited for your event and also be appealing. Finding a location that ticks all these boxes, is always the challenge for those in charge of organizing the event. Not a minor thing for your meeting or event, is catering. The food and beverages should always be top notch, as thinking and networking always goes better on a full and satisfied stomach.

At Spaces, we try to do our utmost to check all the boxes. We host many events for a lot of dif-ferent groups. The events and meeting we facili-tate are organized by ourselves, by our in-house

tenants, by our members or by external compa-nies. What each event organizer has in common is that they want their event to be a success. And this is what Spaces aims to do. Spaces hosts over 5000 business events and meetings per year, for various groups and sizes. Spaces has 3 very different locations in Amsterdam, at the Heren-gracht, Zuidas and Vijzelstraat , each with its own personality, style and size.

At Spaces The Hague, we have large and small meeting rooms but also an entire loft-floor for larger events. The options are aplenty, not only for the space but also concerning AV and catering. And bringing creativity and inspiration to your event is second nature for us, so let us help you organize something special and successful.

Interested in hosting your business event at Spaces? Contact us [email protected] or check us out first www.spaces.nl/meeting-rooms

MAKE SURE THAT YOUR BUSINESS EVENT IS SUCCESSFUL.Hosting a business event or meeting is a challenge but keeping focus

throughout the process of organizing as well as during the event, will

help in achieving your goals.

“For the Ministry of Interior Affairs I organise different meetings and conferences. Spaces Den Haag is always a great option not only because is very close to our own offices, but most of all because of the overall atmosphere. The meeting rooms are beautiful, light and spacious and the cooperation with the staff from Spaces always runs smoothly. I think an attractive and inspiring setting really adds to the results of a workshop or a meeting and that is why Spaces is on our list of “fine meeting locations in the neighbourhood” Renate Heij, Bureau Algemene Bestuursdienst, Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken

Let’s inspire each other. And don’t forget to check out www.workatspaces.nl for all the instagrams made so far.

#Hashtag the World is a tool to gather all pictures of an event in one place and create fun visual content for your company. Interested in knowing more about how to hashtag your world? Contact Timothy or Lucas and they will tell you more. Visit www.hashtagyourbusiness.com for more information.

“I am a Spaces member since 2011 and I have loved it ever since!”

Meynald Weerman, Parcker BV, member Spaces Zuidas

What’s your definition of success?“ Thrive with a motivated team of professionals on the cutting edge of digital innovation. I like to match great ideas with great people. I believe the new experiences we shape will make a difference to many people’s daily life. My success lies in making our clients discover, believe and act on rapidly evolving technological change.”

What are your favorite apps on your phone? “Spotify — Music is my passion. I love to hear new tunes everyday. Great User Experience, easy-to-navigate and beautiful Vivino — Never forget your favorite bottle of wine. Stocktouch — All your favorite stocks in one overview. LinkedIn — LinkedIn has proven to be one of the first business companies to create an easy to navigate mobile app, that is fast enough to read your news and quick enough to access the information you need asap.”

What magazines do you like to read?“I completely switched to digital magazines. Techcrunch, TheNextWeb, Correspondent are my favorite. They breathe innovation and keep me up to date on the latest developments. And my colleague says Monocle! All about trends in design, travel, living.”

How do you feel that Spaces contributes to your daily work experience?“Spaces gives me the freedom to work in different surroundings without having to leave the building. The beautiful ambience makes me feel at home at work. It gives my colleagues and me the energy to walk that extra mile.”

Q&A WITH APPLIFIEDAs a new tenant at Spaces Zuidas, we

had a Q&A session with Marco Wijnakker,

co-founder of Applified. We wanted to get

to know him a bit better and learn what

drives him, but most of all to know what

apps we should have on our phone.

What would you love to see happen at Spaces?“Improving the online community experience of the members. I believe the Spaces network is comprised of a lot of different talents, but not everyone knows who is around. By creating an easy-to-use community App, it should become easier to interact with your neighbors.”

About ApplifiedShaping digital innovation for human interaction. The digital transformation is disruptively changing many companies. Only by harnessing the real power of online, companies will keep their competitive edge and stay profitable. At Appli-fied, we support companies in shaping their digital future. We like to create next-level App, Web and Social experienc-es, where we focus on the human first, then technology.

Contact Applified via www.applified.nl/contact or visit them at Spaces Zuidas Amsterdam.

The most innovative start-ups will be rewarded with cash prizes up to €20,0000 by a jury of investors hosted by New Venture. Especially investors are the toughest test for a start-up’s chance of success. Not only do they want to know exactly what they are putting their money into, but they value the team of entrepreneurs at least as important as the idea. As we speak, the most innovative plans are being reviewed.

So which start-ups will have a shot at the prizes and aim for national fame? Among the most innovative start-ups is a concept that allows anchoring safely in a steel environ-ment with the help of magnets. Without the need for drilling or welding, magnets will revolutionize the scaffolding industry and rope access industry.

Other examples are an indestructible tire for bicycles, a car sharing concept that will let you park for free at airports, an aesthetic energy roof and a robot that is able to remove fouling (algae, slime, barnacles) from the ship’s hull during loading.

On 26th of June, the final New Venture award ceremony of 2014 took place at ABN AMRO headquarters in Amsterdam.

New Venture’s office is location at Spaces Zuidas Amsterdam, want to get in contact with them? Go to www.newventure.nl

CHALLENGING THE MOST INNOVATIVE START-UPS IN THE NETHERLANDSStarting up an innovative high-growth company is an ambitious

undertaking. New Venture creates a challenging environment for

innovative start-ups to write their business plan and to develop

their ambitions with unselfish support from a wide range of partners,

including Spaces. After the program, it is the way in which the

business plan is put into practice that will make the difference.

David Griffin, Director of Photography for National Geographic shares in an inspiring TEDtalk

how photography has the power to connect us.

The power of photography

Photography has the power to freeze a moment, something that in today’s saturated media world is still quite unique. Photography captures that instant and makes it eternal. But how? Moment photography, no matter if it is amateur or professional, makes a connection between the image and the viewer. When that happens, then it has achieved its goal: to connect, to tell a story.

We can all take a couple of wonderful shots and capture a very special moment. The difference between photojour-nalists and us is simple: they have to be able to take those outstanding shots all the time. On top of that, their photo-graphs need to tell a story. If they do not, they are failing

at showing the world how photography is a powerful tool in storytelling. Watch David’s Griffin inspiring TEDtalk and learn how great photographers live by the saying “A picture is worth more than a thousand words” perfectly.

Watch David Griffin’s TEDtalk www.ted.com/talks/ david_griffin_on_how_photography_connects

As we feel believe in the power of photography and in sharing what we love, we host Spaces Showcase. Every quarter we give one young talented local photographer the opportunity to showcase their work at Spaces Herengracht Amsterdam. This summer you can view the work of Abel Minnée.

At Spaces we want to provide the best products. That’s why we

choose the coffee from Bocca, a small local coffee roaster. Bocca

originated 14 years ago out of the small garage of Menno Simons in

“de Jordaan”. Day in day out, Bocca works with the most delicious

coffees from around the world.

COFFEE; THE FUEL FOR SUCCESS

Coffee is growing in countries surrounding the equator and even differs a lot within the regions of those countries; the coffee can have a totally different taste due to various micro-climates and the terroir. Bocca does their utmost to introduce all those pure flavors to people who really love coffee. In order to get the best out of the raw green beans, Bocca selects, roasts and packs all the coffee themselves. For this sourcing and selec-tion process Bocca works intensively together with their sister company Trabocca.

Every single coffee needs a specific roast profile, or recipe, and their roasters keep testing and tasting until the pure flavors are fully revealed. Bocca enjoys working closely together with enthusiastic cafe owners and barista’s, who give the same care to the coffee as they do. If everybody in the coffee chain, from farmer to barista performs 100%, the coffee will give you an amazing experience and lots of pleasure.

Spaces and BoccaWhen someone walks in at Spaces and orders a coffee, Bocca aims to offer them a delicious cup that fits the impressive atmosphere Spaces has. Spaces co-founder Martijn and Bocca

founder Menno are good friends and they both want to provide the best. We are very happy to see that the collaboration works out so well. The same mindset and spirit results in the delicious coffees that the baristas prepare for all Spaces workers and guests. The coffee available in at the Spaces Café Deli is Bocca’s old time favorite, the Full Blend. The Full Blend is the first blend Menno ever made and is chocolaty, sweet and playful. It goes very well with milk-based coffees and is a blend of different origins from Ethiopia, Brasil and Costa Rica.

Want to know about Bocca? Visit their website www.bocca.nl. The Spaces Café Deli is open every weekday from 8am – 6pm at all Spaces locations.

At Spaces we believe that work can best be done at a place where you feel comfortable. Our members have the flexibility to work where and how they prefer. Want to become a member? Contact David Kijlstra [email protected]
