Dear Readers,

Welcome to the May issue and I hope you all had a lovely Easter. The next big event for your diary is The Downton Cuckoo Fair on Saturday 5th May and it’s a day I look forward to every year. We have some “quite interesting”

facts about it on page 34 which you may find “quite interesting”!

Our communities are also gearing up to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in June and we have some information for you on Downton’s celebrations which will be taking place on 2nd June. We also have some photographs from the Casino Night on page 25 which was a fundraising event which took place in March. You may spot me in one of the photographs standing next to my partner who frustratingly had more chips than me (that’s why he looks so happy), and no, not the edible ones! I have to admit I was cheekily tempted to add some more chips onto my pile in the photo using Photoshop but it’s only him I need to beat and he knows the truth….

If you are organising a community event or are involved in a local charity, we are always happy to help promote it for you so please do get in touch. It’s free!

I hope you enjoy the Cuckoo Fair if you’re going and let’s hope the weather is kind to us again.

Solar panels convert energy to heat to produce hot water Home

If you require cost effective, reliable heating and plumbing engineers then look no

further. Operating throughout the Salisbury area, Aquagas Salisbury caters for all domestic and business client's central heating systems, gas services and plumbing requirements.

Established in 1995, the company has all the knowledge and expertise needed to ensure customers receive nothing but the very best service. The team's reputation has been developed through hard work and reliability, which is why they are the area's number one choice for plumbing and gas related work.

Boiler RepairsBoilers that are over ten years old

waste a lot of valuable energy. No matter what type of boiler you have, the experts at Aquagas can quickly diagnose and repair it, using quality components and parts, and all work is covered with a 30-day labour and one year parts guarantee.

Boiler servicingAnnual boiler servicing is a wise precaution. Aquagas can ensure that your current system is operating to peak performance, ensure against carbon monoxide leaks and prolong its lifespan. Regular maintenance can also help prevent a system breakdown - an unwelcome, expensive situation.

Worcester Greenskies Solar PanelsA typical well sized solar system should provide around 50-70% of the domestic hot water requirements of a home, representing a very worthwhile saving on hot water heating costs. The remaining hot water requirement is provided by the boiler.

Solar panels harness the power in both direct and diffused sunlight, and convert the energy to heat for the production of hot water for the home. The solar panels have been designed as a complement to existing heating systems, which use a store of hot water in a cylinder. The existing cylinder is exchanged for a cylinder with two heat exchanger coils; one from the boiler in the property and a second from the solar panels.

The Worcester Greenskies solar panels are a perfect partner to the new range of condensing Greenstar regular and system boilers, with different models available in both oil and gas, which require a separate cylinder for the storage of hot water. When used together a Greenstar boiler and solar system provide a highly efficient system to give heating and hot water comfort.

Aquagas Salisbury are the local Worcester Bosch Accredited Installer for boilers.

Property

When it comes to renting a home many house hunters have done their

homework before they turn up at the letting agents’ door and good schools are at the top of their wish list.

Anna Kitching, who manages the lettings department of estate agents Woolley & Wallis said: “We get quite a few families who have examined the Ofsted reports of local schools and know exactly which catchment area they want to be in. Others have not done quite so much research but if they have young families schools are always important. We find that being in the catchment area for the grammar schools in Salisbury is a big draw.”

At the moment there is also a surge in the number of people looking to rent a home for a six month tenancy after selling their own property. Anna reported: “In the current market people do not want to hold up a sale of their house if they have not

found exactly the right home to move into. So they decide to move into rented accommodation. This way they are not holding up the chain of their own sale and they are able to move more quickly as soon as a house they like comes on the market.”

Anna said it can also be an opportunity for house-buyers to test run an area before committing to buying. “Sometimes people, especially those coming from London, think they want rural village life but then they realise it is not what they were expecting. They still want shops and restaurants on their doorstep but village life in Wiltshire and Hampshire is not always like that.”

Anna has worked for Woolley & Wallis in Salisbury for six years after working in lettings in London for eight years before that. Working alongside Anna is negotiator Dianne Farr and

administrator Amy Waddington. Anna said: “At Woolley & Wallis we offer a highly professional and personal service to both landlords and applicants. We receive a great deal of letters and emails thanking us for our service and it is nice to know we have helped people in what can be a stressful process of moving home.”

Woolley & Wallis offers three levels of service for their landlords:

1) the firm can just find the tenant and organise the initial payments and prepare the tenancy agreement; or

2) they find the tenants and collect the monthly rent; and

3) they offer a full management service which includes looking after maintenance of the property.

Anna said: “The full management option really gives peace of mind to the landlords as they

do not have to worry about anything. Tenants often like it best too as they know

they are dealing with a professional organisation who are always available and will sort out issues quickly. It only costs around two per cent more than the rent collection only option and is very good value for money.”

At the moment Woolley & Wallis has a wide range of properties to rent on

its books from large village homes to city centre flats. Recently tenanted properties

include a three bedroomed maisonette in Salisbury for £750 pcm, a grade-two listed cottage in Rockbourne for £950 pcm, a three-bedroom town house in Salisbury for £995 pcm and a five-bedroomed house in Fordingbridge for £1,550 pcm.

THINKING OF SELLING OR LETTING YOUR PROPERTY?

• Professional advice on how best to price and market your property

Riverbourne Community Farm, Laverstock

As a letting agent, we are increasingly being asked by private landlords (in other words landlords who find their own tenants and look after the property) to provide a package specifically suited to them. This is typically because many of them have had problems at one time or another with getting the wrong tenants in, tenants not paying the rent or problems in complying with the increasing amount of lettings legislation.

Many letting agents do not offer such a service, however Bassets has recognized that there are many private landlords who want a cost effective option which will ensure that all of the necessary legal documents and relevant checks are in place prior to the let. We can offer a tailor made service to suit individual needs.

For example, where a family member or friend is the prospective tenant but the landlord wishes to maintain professionalism throughout the process, using Bassets “Private Landlord” service could be ideal. Included within this service, we will:

• Reference tenants using a professional referencing company who undertake employment referencing, current landlords reference, credit and identity checks as required.

• Draft the correct tenancy agreements (including any special conditions required) using our extremely comprehensive Assured Shorthold tenancy Agreement

• Register and hold the Damage Deposit with The Dispute Service for the duration of the tenancy.

• Arrange for a comprehensive, independent inventory to be conducted with full colour photographs.

• Produce a “check out” report at the end of the tenancy and deal with any deposit negotiations.

The benefit of this service for any landlord is peace of mind at an affordable cost knowing that experienced, ARLA qualified staff are protecting one of your larger investments.

For those landlords who would like to let their property yet handover the time-consuming legalities to an award winning professional family run estate agent, this service could be the answer.

Tuesday 1st May 10.00am - 5.30pmWiltshire Diamond Jubilee Celebration EventThe Wiltshire Diamond Jubilee event is a free event which will take place in the grounds of Salisbury Cathedral on Tuesday May 1st from 10am to 5.30pm.

A medieval theme will be created in the cathedral close with people in period costume and displays of combat and falconry. Music will help to boost the celebratory atmosphere and a performance arena will be set up for local acts to perform, everything from maypole and Morris dancers to choirs and folk bands.

Community areas in Wiltshire and Swindon, along with voluntary, business and public services will occupy ‘jousting style’ tents. They will provide exhibits, displays and performances for all to enjoy, everything from regency dancers and local breweries to mini canal barges and a life size white horse.

The southern Wiltshire community area is showcasing old and new in an exhibition of activities from its diverse rural communities entitled “Deep roots; new shoots”. This will include The River Bourne Community Farm - including their goats. The Downton Mace, made in c1714, will be on show alongside the Downton Lace display showing the bobbin lace which has been made in Downton since around 1800. This area is also proud of its annual Cuckoo Fair and the young maypole dancers from across the community area who take part in it will give demonstrations. Recording the history of the area is the Alderbury & Whaddon Local History Group who will showcase their work. Representing the resilience of the communities will be Whiteparish First Responders, trained volunteers who provide life-saving rapid response to medical emergencies in the rural area. Landford Community Partnership will also be demonstrating the array of projects that stem from their recent community plan and to top it off there will be music from Wiltshire's premier brass band, The Woodfalls Band.

Community First Responders (CFRs) first came to the SP5 area with the launch

of the Whiteparish group in 2003. The group started after one of the members came across a similar scheme whilst on holiday in Yorkshire. He contacted the, as then, Wiltshire Ambulance Service (now part of Great Western Ambulance Service) with a view to rolling out a similar scheme in this area. And the rest is history.

The scheme has evolved over the years. Landford now has its own First Responder group and, with Whiteparish First Responders, provides cover to the surrounding villages, including Downton, Redlynch, Lover, East and West Grimstead, Alderbury, Whaddon, and Hamptworth.

What do Community First Responders do?

We all know that living in a rural area means that help is a little further away in the event of a medical emergency than if you live in a town or city. In many medical situations time is of the essence, so CFR volunteers are mobilised by the ambulance service when a 999 call is made.

Due to their proximity CFRs often arrive before the ambulance and can perform a number of potentially life saving tasks. All CFR volunteers are trained in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). They carry defibrillators (to help start a heart in cardiac arrest) and oxygen in addition to other first aid equipment.

During 2011 the Whiteparish group alone attended 101 incidents and in the first quarter of 2012 have already attended 38. These incidents range from full cardiac arrest (when every one minute delay reduces chances of survival by approximately 10%) to heart attacks, strokes and many other serious conditions and potentially life-threatening conditions.

Whiteparish CFRs provide cover for around 60-70% of the time (including many overnight shifts).

One of the frustrations faced by the group is difficulty in finding houses, especially at night, as satellite navigation systems only give an approximate location and do not ‘recognise’ house names. The Ambulance Service mapping

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE - PARTICULARLY IN RURAL AREASHealth

"If you call an ambulance, it may be a Community First Responder that arrives first"

14 | The SP5 Magazine

system is first rate and can help ‘talk’ CFRs to addresses but it would save a lot of time if people who were expecting an ambulance made their houses more visible.

Founder Whiteparish CFR member Martin Fisher says, “Finding house names can be a real problem, even in the day time. It would really help if people could make sure the house name is clearly visible at the front of the property, making sure it is not overgrown - a particular problem at this time of year, and if possible have somebody standing outside. In addition switching the hazard warning lights on in any car outside helps. At night please make sure all the lights in the front rooms of the house are turned on as well.”

He adds, “Nothing is more frustrating for us and the patient than getting to the immediate vicinity very quickly and then not being able to find the exact address. In some extreme cases this could mean the difference between life and death.”

If you call an ambulance it may be a Community First Responder that arrives first – you will recognise them as they wear high visibility jackets and carry identification. But rest assured, if a Community Responder knocks on your door, an ambulance will also be on route.

So don’t forget – if you call an ambulance:

• Have someone waiting outside if at all possible

• Switch on hazard warning lights on any car parked outside

• Make sure house names are highly visible from the road

• At night switch on as many lights as possible

• When you call 999, tell the ambulance service about anything that will help pinpoint exactly where you live: “The first house after the bus stop” etc.

equipped classrooms, libraries, large outside play areas and equipment in beautiful open surroundings, sufficient computers for every child to use individually, modern facilities including interactive white boards and an AstroTurf court for all-weather outdoor sports. In addition to the usual curriculum, the children enjoy a variety of sports, including gymnastics, cricket, swimming, football, tag rugby and netball - we regularly take part in local tournaments. Our children learn to cook in small groups and in KS2 they take violin and cello lessons. Longford School has strong links with our local communities and churches, where we have held our harvest festival and Christmas

celebrations.

Class sizes are as small as you would expect to find in the private sector and our teachers know each child extremely well. Our staff and Governors pride themselves on being approachable and communication with parents is key to ensuring each child achieves their best.

Our sites at Britford and Odstock are in beautiful village locations, close to Salisbury city centre and easily accessible by car, bus or on foot. Many of our children walk or cycle to school, but car parking is also available at the school or the Britford Park and Ride.

We also have the benefit of a free Longford School minibus, which travels in a circuit between the sites every morning and after school, stopping to collect and drop off children upon request at Nunton, Rowbarrow (Nisa) and Salisbury District Hospital.

The children at Longford School are able to learn in a supportive, safe and happy environment. They receive plenty of individual attention and are encouraged to achieve their very best in all subjects. They treat each other with kindness and respect - no one

is ever "left out".

Headteacher Mrs Kate Graves says "Longford is a small and friendly village school close to the city of Salisbury, where our aim is to offer a first class, child-centred education in a happy environment where all children can thrive and achieve success. We would love to show you around our school so that you can visit classes in action, meet our wonderful staff, both teaching and non-teaching and of course the children who make our school so special to us."

For more information or to arrange a visit, please contact Mrs Roche in the school office on 01722 327292, or visit the new website www.longford.wilts.sch.uk.

I have decided to designate May as National Cider Month. And since, as far as I know, there is no statutory board for designating

such things as National Sausage Week (which actually exists) and National Athlete’s Foot Day (which thankfully doesn’t), my National Cider Month is as formal and official as any other example of this sort of public relations hokum. So there.

But why am I designating May as National Cider Month when there is already (perhaps unbeknownst to most of you) a perfectly good National Cider Month, run under the auspices of the Campaign for Real Ale in October? Because October is silly, that’s why.

But, why have a National Cider Month at all? Can’t cider look after itself, without my intervention? Well, the Bulmers, the Gaymers and the Magners of this world with their mass distribution and big advertising budgets don’t need my help and jolly well aren’t getting it. But if you think that’s all there is to cider then you’re in for a treat.

Unless you’re lucky enough to live in the western counties, you’ll be extremely lucky to find what a traditionalist would call a “real” cider on the handpumps at your local pub. Most large towns – although by no means all – have an outlet for Weston’s excellent draught cider from Much Marcle in Herefordshire. But good though Weston’s is, it’s hardly a representative selection of what the country’s estimated 4-500 independent cidermakers have to offer.

But what is “traditional” cider? Basically it’s just pure fresh-pressed apple juice slowly fermented over the winter – apple wine, in fact. Any apple juice will ferment, but most of the best ciders are fermented from blends of the two or three hundred varieties of cider apple – small, hard, inedible little things, for the most part, and sour with tannin which acts as a strong antibacterial agent and gives the finished cider an oaky depth. These traditional ciders range from the roughest farmhouse scrumpies, which

often have an almost vinegary acidity, to drinks as subtle, sophisticated, and elegant as fine white wine. And then there’s perry, a superb drink that’s almost impossible to obtain thanks to the rarity of the pears from which it’s made...

Traditional cider is almost always still (not flat) rather than sparkling. Left to itself it will ferment to complete dryness, and to a strength of 6-8% alcohol by volume, and the carbon dioxide generated during fermentation will dissipate naturally. If you want it sparkling you have to deliberately reintroduce some CO2, either by pitching the cider with a little yeast and sugar to stir a mild refermentation or, 99.99 times out of a hundred, by fizzing it up artificially.

I do everything I can to introduce people to the delights of traditional cider, and that’s why I’m designating May as National Cider Month. October was chosen for the honour because that’s when apples are generally harvested. But cider needs to be fermented slowly and carefully, to allow the harsh malic acid to turn into the smoother and more mellow lactic acid – the so-called malo-lactic fermentation. Last season’s crop should be ready to drink right about now.

There are cidermakers all over the country these days, not just in Devon, Somerset and Herefordshire but in Norfolk, Suffolk, Kent, Essex, Surrey, Sussex, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, Cheshire, even Yorkshire and Scotland! So seek out your nearest, invest in a few bottles, and celebrate with me.

There's nothing that Downton likes better than a party and there's no better reason to throw one than the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

To celebrate Her Majesty’s 60 years, the village will play host to a whole day of festivities on June 2, beginning with a carnival parade and ending with fireworks lighting up the skies above with plenty of fun and entertainment in between.

We are even promised an aerobatic display by a WWII aircraft and the attendance of seven Queen Elizabeths - one to represent each decade of her reign and the last our present day monarch.

When it comes to making the most of a big occasion, Downton has had plenty of experience - those of you who were here for the Millennium celebrations and the Queen's Golden Jubilee will know that we know how to pull out the stops when it comes to a spectacular knees-up with an open invitation to all.

Planning and fund-raising for the event started two years ago, driven by a team that includes Peter Pleydell-Bouverie (President), Keith Sutcliffe (Vice President) Bryan Morris (chairman), Malcolm Dean (co-ordinator/fundraiser), Isobel Griscti (treasurer) and Hilary Mace (secretary).

People have turned out in their finery to attend black tie dos, casino evenings (pictures opposite show what a great night it was!), ceilidhs and other events to help raise the £20,000 needed and local organisations have offered services and goods free of charge by way of sponsorship.

At the time of going to press, this is how the big day is shaping up:

1.30pm-4.30pm: The Borough - carnival parade, street party and children's entertainment

5.30pm-11pm: The Memorial Gardens - live music, flying display, concert and fireworks finale

Tickets for the evening entertainment are available from Hale Newsagents, Beverley's Cakes, Pets Pad and the Cuckoo Fair stall.

Prices in advance: £7, concessions (OAPs and 16s and under) £4, family ticket (maximum 5 to include no more than 2 adults) £20

Prices on gate: £10, concessions £5, family ticket not available.

ConcertFormer Cuckoo Fair princess Matilda Rogers turns queen for the night as the first of seven women to represent Queen

Elizabeth II in a concert of music, dance and drama that takes us from the year she became monarch to the present day.

Concert director Jane Seden reckons that around 150 performers will be taking part including Downton Drama Company, the Forest School of Dance and the children from DADA and Stagecoach.

Audiences can expect songs from great musicals like My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Annie, Cats, Mamma Mia and Les Miserables and iconic pop tunes ranging from Thriller to Candle in the Wind.

"All the famous bits from the last 60 years will be there," promises Jane.

Backstage help is still needed and if you'd like to volunteer, Jane can be contacted on 01725 510122.

The concert starts at 8pm and concludes around 10.45pm with a spectacular fireworks display. Bring your own seating and enjoy.

Street PartyIf you are over 65 and living within Downton parish, you should receive a personal invitation to the street party on the maypole green in The Borough where food and drink will be provided.

DOWNTON PREPARES FOR THE QUEEN'S DIAMOND JUBILEE

CELEBRATIONS

CASINO2012

NIGHT

Wiltshire Council provides

Downton with grant of £1204

There won’t be many republicans in evidence in London this summer. Even non-royalists will be caught up in the pageantry of Her Majesty’s

Diamond Jubilee celebrations; an event guaranteed, even more so than the Olympics, to lift the nation’s spirits at a time of general despondency. As part of the celebrations The Queen has granted city status to four UK towns: Perth in Scotland; St Asaph in Wales; Chelmsford in England and Armagh in Northern Ireland.

There was another time in history when the country’s collective spirits needed lifting – sixty years ago. Residential streets were closed to traffic so that local communities could hold street parties. Bunting and Union flags hung from lines strung from upstairs windows on either side of the streets. Makeshift tables sagged under the weight of sandwiches, jelly and custard and bottles of Tizer.

Games were organised, one of which consisted of the father of a family threading a needle and cotton which he then handed to his impatiently waiting offspring who would sprint down the road to the mother. The mother would sew a button onto a square of material

which the offspring would then rush to the referee. Not all the families could participate in this game; some of the fathers had not returned home eight years previously.

In the evening we sat round our wireless sets to listen to our new Queen’s speech: “…Throughout all my life I shall strive to be worthy of your trust…” In this speech the Queen also paid tribute to the support of her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the speech is as valid and as relevant today as it was sixty years ago.

Times changed. Britain changed; in some cases beyond recognition. But there has been one constant: a tower of strength whose influence will not be fully appreciated until she is no longer with us.

In a much earlier speech, made in Cape Town on her twenty-first birthday, 21 April 1947, the then Princess Elizabeth declared “… my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service…” Well, we all know now that it was to be long. We also know that she meant every word she said.

How differently history would have read had her would-be assassin, Marcus Sarjeant, succeeded in acquiring a real gun and live ammunition. The mentally disturbed teenager fired six blank shots at the Queen as she rode in the Trooping the Colour ceremony on 13 June 1981. He was quickly overpowered by Police Sergeant John Woodcock and St John Ambulance man John Heaseman. He told them “I wanted to be famous. I wanted to be a somebody.” And he had written a diary entry: ‘I am going to stun and mystify the world. I will become the most famous teenager in the

world.’

Fortunate not to have been shot on the spot he escaped with five years imprisonment. But most notable was Elizabeth II’s majestic reaction to the incident. As her horse, nineteen-year-old Burmese, panicked and reared she calmly brought him under control and continued with the scheduled ride to Horseguards Parade, comforting him with a few pats on the neck while turning to smile at the cheering crowd.

This was, allegedly, the second attempt on the Monarch’s life. According to a retired senior police officer in Australia he was in charge of an investigation in 1981 after a train carrying the Queen and Prince Philip collided with a large log which had been placed on the track after police and a pilot train had passed along the route. The retired officer, Mr McHardy, who claims to have interviewed suspects including IRA sympathisers says the Australian

government issued a suppression order to avoid embarrassment. There has so far been no comment from Buckingham Palace on the validity of these claims.

True or false I doubt that the Queen loses much sleep over these stories. She has, over the past eight decades, proved herself indomitable.

It was the Queen’s consort, HRH Prince Philip, who pointed out that sometimes a position is more important than the person who occupies that position. With typical clarity he had put the concept in a nutshell: if a nation chooses to have a figurehead then there must be a human to give that position substance, but the human is secondary to the position, not vice versa. For the past sixty years we have been fortunate in having a person worthy of that position; a person of supreme dignity and dedication the like of which this country may never see again. God Save the Queen.

Fairs are known to have been held in "The Borough", (which was then known as the "The New

Market"), since 1249, and in 1289 the Bishop of Winchester claimed a fair on the Eve, Day and Morrow of St. Laurence (9th-11th August).

In 1677 Charles Il granted, by letters patent, to Giles Eyre and his heirs

for ever, the authority to hold two fairs annually in Downton. One was to be held

12th February and the other on St. Mathews Day, October 21st. Profits from these fairs were to be used by Sir Joseph Ashe and Henry Eyre for the purpose of funding a Grammar - Free School. The February Fair was later changed to the 23rd April to

prevent it clashing with Romsey Fair.

These fairs were hiring and market fairs, the April fair was for cattle and

pedlars and the other for Sheep and Horses. Any stray animals were put in the pen that was located opposite the Memorial Hall, they were kept there until collected by their owners or sold off under the supervision of the Hay Ward.

Hiring Fairs were very common in the South of England until the 1900's and

many were associated with the Cuckoo. Many had Cuckoo Princes, Princesses and Kings. Downton Cuckoo Fair stopped in 1914 and was resumed after the first world war for one or two years.

There are a number of theories about the origin of the connection of the Cuckoo to the fairs and there were a number held in the area. One being that the Cuckoo was penned up in the pound and released in the spring and it is true that the Cuckoo can usually be heard in Downton at the time of the fair!

In 1978 local man Peter Waddington JP and Chairman of St Laurences fund raising committee together with his wife Shirley learned of the old Cuckoo Fair from Mrs Daphne Greville-Heygate and decided to reinstate it as a way of raising much needed funds for St Laurences Church. In 1979 the fair started off in a modest way by selling a few stalls to local charities. The fair proved a success and it was decided to continue with it the following year. 2012 will be the 33rd fair and draws as many as 20,000 visitors throughout the day.

Its continued success is due to a dedicated team of volunteers, the variety of attractions and entertainment for visitors and of course the free entry to all.

"Quite Interesting" Facts about the Downton Cuckoo Fair

Note: The information above was gathered from documents from Peter Waddington and Chris Pitts. The Cuckoo Fair is a non profit making event and is organised to allow local and national charities to raise money and bring entertainment to Downton.

We are delighted this month to introduce you to a local photographer who has kindly granted us permission to use some of his wonderful photographs on our magazine covers. Richard Barton, from Salisbury, currently has about a dozen of his local images displayed on one wall next to the

bar in the Landford Poacher at Pound Hill on the junction of the A36 (Salisbury to Southampton Road) and the B3097. Richard told us "whilst I'm strictly an amateur photographer, Mike the landlord, is very kindly showing some of my local images and is keen on showing more so I plan to get out and shoot more." Two large framed images of Salisbury Cathedral have recently sold from the display.

Richard has a website (www.rcb4344.zenfolio.com) and says "if anyone sees something they like I am very happy to discuss different framing options or even supplying an image with mount and backing board ready for insertion into a frame of their own choice”.

Earl of Pembroke, a permanent home was found for the school, with Pat Burgess as the very energetic instructor and many years later it has become one of the largest RDA groups in the Country. In an average week the riding school is attended by approximately 200 riders with a wide range of disabilities and each rider has their individual needs. Riders are kept safe by a team of volunteers, over 100 each week: some riders need a team of 6 or 7 people to assist in the mounting and from then on 3 or 4 during their ride whilst others may require just one helper. With the endless enthusiasm of the team, riding gradually builds confidence and self-esteem and works wonders on the riders’ balance, coordination and fitness. At the same time it is great fun and gives a tremendous sense of achievement.

The major expense, the care of 17 resident horses, all of different shapes and sizes to suit the riders, and maintenance of the purpose built riding centre are met entirely by fundraising efforts and donations. Each year the Centre needs to raise £65,000 to enable the valuable work to continue. Without the

support of local people and businesses the Centre would have to reassess how the facility is provided, meaning some riders would no longer be able to benefit from this unique type of therapy and the sense of freedom which many of us take for granted each day.

With such high running costs, events play a major part in the fundraising efforts. Events are run throughout the year but the summer months provide an ideal opportunity to hopefully enjoy the weather and the great outdoors whilst raising money for a worthwhile cause.

Sunday May 20th - Sponsored Jubilee RideWhat could be nicer than a sunny Sunday morning ride through our magnificent countryside? RDA Wilton's sponsored ride this year starts and ends at Tidpit Common, with the kind permission of Mr and Mrs Shepherd, Natural England Martin Down and their generous sponsors Landford Stone. The ride will comprise of approximately 10 miles of downland, private farmland and woodland tracks with no public roads to hinder the ride. Also a shorter 3 mile route will be available for the lead rein. Entrants can start their ride from 9am until 1pm with each rider being awarded a commemorative rosette on completion of the ride and also the chance of lifting the annual cup for the most sponsorship collected. Entry forms can be obtained from most Tack and Saddlery shops in the area or direct from [email protected]

Thursday 7th June - Summer FeteOnce again Mr and Mrs Rasch at Heale House welcome RDA Wilton back for their Annual Summer Fete. Half term fun is almost guaranteed! With Jubilee celebrations high on everyone’s list there will be a warm welcome to the Queen of Hearts at Heale House and you are of course invited to afternoon tea with her, the Mad Hatter, Alice and if he can make it in time, the White Rabbit. Ticklish Allsorts will be on hand to keep the children entertained along with a myriad of stalls and attractions and some favourite RDA ponies will be offering rides throughout the afternoon. For those of a more relaxed nature, why not just take the time to wander the quiet surroundings of the Heale House gardens or sit back and enjoy a delicious cream tea,

sumptuous strawberries and mouth-watering ice-cream or maybe even all of them.

The fun starts at 2pm until 4.30pm and entry is £2 per adult.

Salisbury is looking to become one of only 25 other towns and cities in the country to be

awarded Purple Flag status.Just as the Blue Flag is an indicator of a good beach, Purple Flag is the indicator of where to go for a good, safe night out. Purple Flag is the “gold standard” for town centres at night, it aims to raise standards and improve the quality of our towns and cities between the hours of 5pm and 5am.The accreditation scheme is based on a unique set of standards and towns and cities that meet the standards can fly the flag. Since the launch in October 2009 just 25 centres have been awarded Purple Flags. Keith Humphries, cabinet member for public protection, said: “It is great to see local businesses and organisations working together to make Salisbury a desirable night-time destination for people of all ages. Achieving Purple Flag status would be a great reward for all of this hard work.”

Inspector Andy Noble, from Wiltshire Police, said: “Salisbury Neighbourhood Policing Team wholeheartedly support the Purple Flag bid. I am convinced that the joint work ongoing within the city will continue to reduce violence and make Salisbury safer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners for their support, particularly those within the PubWatch and City Centre CCTV Team.”The partners working on the Purple Flag project include Wiltshire Council, Salisbury City Council, Wiltshire Police, Salisbury City Centre Management, Pub Watch,

VisitWiltshire, Salisbury City Football Club, private businesses including shops, restaurants, pubs and clubs, Street Pastors, local media, sport and entertainment providers including City Hall. You can find out more by visiting www.wiltshire.gov.uk/salisburypurpleflag or the national website www.purpleflag.org.Image © Richard Barton www.rcb4344.zenfolio.com
