Dear Readers,March heralds the start of spring, bringing with it new life as the daffodils start to appear, lambs adorn our countryside, and, far less exciting but important nevertheless, it’s the end of the tax year.... groan. I digress but if you need any help,

there are two very good accountants in here!

Sadly, we lost a life recently when my 13 year old cat had to be put to sleep. She was seriously ill with kidney disease so it was the kindest thing to do but it’s never easy losing a pet. They become part of the family and, needless to say, I have been giving countless hugs to my other cat (her sister) and dog (not related - just mad) since. The staff at Hampton Park Vets are wonderful and care for the animals as if they were their own. It’s a timely reminder too that pet insurance really does help when you’re faced with an unexpected illness. Hampton Park Vets have a great offer on for new customers at the moment so it’s worth registering your pet even if they’re not ill.

Food and Drink

If your taste buds start to tingle at the thought of great value, home-cooked food made with locally sourced ingredients served by a family team who are passionate about the quality and service they provide to their customers then you have every reason to get excited. In fact, regular customers of Café Continental at The Stag in Charlton All Saints already know where to find all of the above and would probably wonder why it’s taken you so long to try it out for yourself.

Having completed the extensive renovation of The Stag and re-opened the doors a little over a year ago, the transformation is well and truly complete with diners from near and far revisiting week after week. Karen Smith, the owner, and her family have created an elegant and welcoming bistro and with their first anniversary celebrations in December now behind them, I went to meet Karen to find out what’s in store over the coming months as the family business expands its range of culinary delights.

The concept is simple and it works – casual dining which offers a coffee shop and pastries in the morning, great value lunches with traditional favourites such as half a spit-roasted chicken,

oven roasted spare ribs which are made to a secret family recipe and very popular, pasta, paella and mediterranean specials plus lighter bites including baguettes and paninis, all prepared and baked on the premises. Tea and cakes are available in the afternoon and evening meals are served on Thursday, Friday and Saturdays. A glass of wine or beer and a bowl of olives are available at anytime.

The family team consists of Karen’s son Richard and daughter-in-law Marie who, together with Barry, head up the kitchen whilst an excellent front of house team is lead by Pam and Karen herself who told me “our customers are extremely important to us. We continually listen to any suggestions they might have and that’s why, due to popular demand, we have recently started offering a traditional home-cooked roast on Sundays. We try to offer a versatile menu which suits all different tastes and we frequently change our ‘specials’ board to make the most

of local seasonal ingredients.”

A new service recently launched which caters for private parties has already proved popular and this is available to book on any Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evening. The staff have also had their first wedding reception, are now catering for afternoon tea parties and have recently provided a buffet for 50 people which was prepared in their kitchen and then collected by the organisers. It’s this flexible and positive approach coupled with great quality food at fantastic prices which is attracting new customers and with ample free parking and the option to pre-book both day and evening, it’s easy to see why.

2012 certainly looks to be another busy year and no one can accuse Karen of resting on her laurels. With a new grandchild and so many exciting ideas and plans on the horizon, it doesn’t look like life will be slowing down much but a strong family unit and the ever changing responsibilities could quite possibly be the key to Café Continental’s success. Karen should be extremely proud of her achievements and you can certainly be sure of a warm welcome when you drop by…. just don’t leave it too long!

It’s an instant reaction for so many of us when pain first strikes; we simply take something to relieve our symptoms. Popping a pill is frequently our default setting and our usual answer is to take paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin to relieve symptoms – the most popular over-the-counter painkillers.

The main pain-killing ingredient in aspirin is salicylic acid, which is found naturally in the herbs willow bark, poplar and meadowsweet. While willow bark and poplar are only available via a herbalist, meadowsweet can be found in natural health stores. Meadowsweet can be drank as a tea and is very effective at tackling pain fast, says natural medicine practitioner, Susse Wedel. “For general pain-killing use, ginger, turmeric and cayenne pepper are very good options. You can ingest these by adding to a hot water drink or sprinkling on food as and when required,” adds Susse.

Tackling HeadachesFor headaches brought on by stress or tension, the herb rosemary is Susse’s top tip for relieving nervous tension, and just inhaling the aroma can help to ease tension. Rosemary essential oil can also be rubbed directly onto the temple for instant relief. Lavender and chamomile are two of the best relaxation herbs around and are a super option for easing headache pain. As stress headaches are commonly caused by a constriction of blood vessels in the head, rosemary and lavender can help to ease this pressure. These herbs are all available as herbal teas and are equally effective when consumed as a drink. Herbs which have an affinity to the head tend to have a high content of calcium, magnesium and potassium, which are all naturally powerful against headache pain. For migraine sufferers, ginkgo can help to provide relief from painful symptoms. Drinking plenty of water and cutting out stimulants in the diet such as caffeinated drinks, sugar, tobacco and chocolate can also help, as these foods can trigger migraines, as well as prolonging them.

Muscle StrainAdding several handfuls of fresh thyme to a bath can be an effective alternative to over-the-counter pain relief for muscle strain, as thyme eases both muscular and rheumatic pain. St John’s Wort oil and rosemary oil can also help to ease muscular aches and pains. Foods containing magnesium such as wholegrains, bananas, spinach, broccoli, tofu, nuts, seeds, beans

and pulses can also assist in minimising painful flare-ups.

Menstrual Pain

Ginger helps to relax the uterine muscles and stops painful cramps, spasms and contractions. Drinking a ginger herbal tea, or creating your own tea by grating ginger and adding to hot water, can provide fast relief from severe period pain. As an additional tip, Susse recommends topping up with hot water regularly as this renews the active pain-killing properties and provides longer relief. Raspberry leaf tea is also effective for balancing hormones, relaxing muscles and relieving menstrual cramps. To ease bloating and pre-menstrual tension symptoms, Susse recommends yarrow tea.

Other super relievers for period pain include: chamomile as it is high in calcium, minerals and contains muscle relaxant properties and valerian as this helps to reduce cramping and relaxes stomach muscles. In addition, taking a vitamin B6 supplement can also help to tackle muscle spasms associated with period pain.

Relieving Pain NaturallyHealth experts advise that natural alternatives to over-the-counter pain relief are often the best solution. Julie Penfold looks at natural pain relief options for common health complaints.

For those familiar with Beverley’s Creative Cakes there was a real treat in store when her new sugarcraft school was officially opened in Redlynch last month.

Expanding upon Beverley Barter’s successful cake-making enterprise which she established over fifteen years ago, the new school promises a world of offerings to those interested in developing their expertise in cake decoration.

Having opened its doors for the official launch on Saturday 11th February, Beverley’s sugarcraft school welcomed prospective students to take a tour of the new workshops and kitchens, and sample the delights in store with some celebratory tea and cake. Visitors were able to see

where the cake-work takes place and witness Beverley herself demonstrating the art of sugarcraft and decoration, as she encouraged visitors to have a go themselves. In the evening, the ribbon was officially snipped by royal icing expert Eddie Spence MBE, as local business people and friends were invited to celebrate the new location of Beverley’s Creative Cakes.

Beverley commented: “Over the years we have seen a huge rise of enquiries about cake decoration lessons and the new studio will allow us to expand the range of courses and get more people involved. Sugarcraft is great fun to learn and the skills we teach enable students to use their imaginations to create beautiful

cakes for any occasion.”

A host of new classes are now available, with courses tailored for beginners, intermediate and advanced cake decorators. These will take place in eight-week blocks, with Beverley also running monthly workshops focusing upon specific crafts such as marzipanning and icing to wired flowers and creating stunning three-dimensional decorations for cakes.

For further information on one of Beverley’s courses and booking details please contact the shop on 01725 513758 or visit www.beverleyscreativecakes.co.uk. Gift vouchers are available.

An updated look at some well-loved characters from four of Shakespeare’s most popular plays imagining what might have happened next. Each 50 minute monologue is full of laughter, tears, and quite a few surprises. They explore the full gamut of human emotions and have been written so they can be understood and

enjoyed without knowledge of the parent play.

Jules Hobbs and Richard Curnow from ‘Finding the Will’ are back with two more ‘Bard Heads’. This year they are bringing two new monologues based on Hamlet and Macbeth.

Call Me Oz tells the story of Osric, the ‘sensitive’ young courtier who had the unhappy task of overseeing Prince Hamlet’s last fencing competition.

In ‘The Third Witch From The Left’, an innocent young girl called Meg finds herself on a cold, dark heath in Scotland. She’s unlucky enough to be present when some weird sisters predict what the future may have in store for a couple of weary soldiers.

1. Creating a focal pointWhile traditional rooms often work around a fireplace or TV, larger, multi-purpose rooms can lack visual focus. By introducing colour, pattern and/or texture on one wall – perhaps above a sofa or behind a dining table – you’ll add character, interest and even drama. The easiest solution is to use a strong paint colour or to hang a large painting, photograph or print, while boldly patterned wallpaper also works well.

2. Using colourPale colours are generally considered best to emphasise the airiness of large open spaces. But should you go for one shade all over, or choose different colours for different areas? Using the same colour throughout gives an unbroken look and emphasises space, but if one end of the room is to function separately from the other – a living and dining space, a living and work space – you can zone these areas by varying their colour. A tonal scheme, with colour going from light to darker from one end to the other, can be particularly effective.

3. Planning your lightingUse lighting to delineate different areas within your open-plan space, and illuminate different parts

to suit your needs, whether it’s a living area or working space, a kitchen or a dining area. Layer in different types of light in different areas, using a mixture of concealed lighting (in ceilings or under shelves, for example) and eye-catching, over-sized fixtures that suit the extra-large space.

4. Choosing a fl oor Choosing flooring for a multi-purpose space such as an open-plan cooking/dining/living area can be tricky, as the kitchen area needs to be able to cope with splashes and spills, while you’ll want the sitting area to feel cosy and comfortable. You have two choices: either run the same flooring throughout for a sleek, flowing look, or choose a variety of types of flooring which will

differentiate between areas. If you go for the former option, consider stone or wood, both of which can be softened with rugs where necessary, or consider high quality vinyl, which is spill-proof and forgiving underfoot.

5. Separating spacesNot all open-plan spaces need to be entirely open all of the time, so for truly flexible living it’s advisable to include some sort of flexible division. In a period property, panelled doors that can be folded back against the walls when not in use are perfect; in a more modern house a moveable screen, or perhaps ceiling-mounted panels

Open SesameWhy have several small, dark rooms when you can simply knock down some walls and live in a gorgeous, airy, bright and huge space? But there are eight key issues you should bear in mind when decorating your open-plan home, says Katherine Sorrell

A comfortable seating area can be based around a rug and fi nished with oversized lighting. The Barletta collection, Marks & Spencer,

(on a track) that can be pulled to one side when desired, would be enormously useful.

6. Linking spacesOpen-plan kitchen/living areas are ideal for entertaining, but how do you successfully blend the spaces seamlessly? One solution is to continue the style of your kitchen units for storage used in nearby areas, choosing a design that looks as good for a TV stand, say, as for a cutlery drawer. Versatility is key and you should consider not just colour but also texture, and even handles – long, slender handles tend to look better in modern living spaces than dumpy round ones, for example.

7. Solutions for storageKnocking two rooms together gives you a gorgeous open area – but, because you’ve lost wall space for cupboards and shelves, much less room to hide your clutter. One solution is to use tall, open shelving that doubles as a room divider as well as somewhere to display your stuff, while if you have a flat-screen TV, mount it on a media wall with storage for DVDs concealed behind it. In fact, make the most of every tiny corner, building storage into sloping ceilings, around windows or in any alcove you can find.

8. Buying and arranging furnitureConventional furniture won’t necessarily have the right proportions to work well in open-plan living areas, so you may have to look for larger-than-average pieces, and bear in mind that they have to look good from all angles, not just the front. Avoid the temptation to place all the furniture around the edges of the room (it will look like a nursing home); instead, create cosy sitting areas within the main space – with two sofas facing each other, with tables and lamps behind, perhaps, or else use modular furniture which creates sociable corners.

Sliding panels are designed to partition different areas. Leave the system closed to disguise clutter or pull it back to revert to open-

plan bliss. Prices start from £77.84, The Fabric Box, 0844 8118280; thefabricbox.co.uk.

Here, a subtle difference in colour separates the dining area from the living space. The dramatic wenge wood shutters are on a

track, so are ideal for large windows and as room dividers. £280 per sq m, Santa Fe Shutters,

British Wildlife Photographer Award Collection 2 (Photography) AA Publishing

Who says coffee table books always have to be about antique teapots and small furniture? Bring the outside world in and celebrate the best that this island has to offer. The British Wildlife Photography Awards began in 2009 and this beautiful collection is full of the winning pictures from 2011, ranging from urban intruders to marine life. Vivid images beautifully capture British wildlife in a wonderfully voyeuristic way. The whole collection is a window on the extraordinary lives of animals and is definitely one to be treasured.

RSPB Pocket Nature Wildlife of Britain

If you’ve ever been out with your children and found yourself stumped by the question ‘what’s that?’ then this guide is a must-have for you. With over a thousand species of British animals, plants and fungi, you’ll sound like Chris Packham on Springwatch if you carry this in your rucksack.

Bugs Britannica Peter Marren and Richard Mabey

Determined to help the smallest creatures on our island make the biggest impact, ‘Bugs Britannica’ is a must-have for creepy-crawly enthusiasts. It’s wonderfully colourful and informative and guarantees to give you a greater understanding of how insects and humans interact and the importance of our tiny house-invaders. Our gardens and homes are teeming with bug-life and you might find you’re no longer reaching for the fly-spray this summer.

British Wildlife Detectives’ Handbook Camilla de la Bedovere

This is the ideal companion for budding young

naturalists, but most importantly of all…it comes with stickers. This handbook is packed with facts and information on everything you’re likely to see, both in the back-garden and

beyond. Children will love turning

detective and finding out what species they’re looking at. You can inspire and encourage them to really explore their

natural surroundings without there being a computer in sight. The handbook has tick-boxes for keeping tabs on everything they’ve spotted so they can look back over their casework and truly admire British wildlife.

A Kestrel for a Knave Barry Hines

If you were a teenager in the 1980s then you probably read ‘A Kestrel for a Knave’ in school. For anyone who didn’t, you’re in for a treat. Disillusioned Billy Casper is enduring a deprived and violent upbringing in a small Yorkshire mining town when he builds an unlikely friendship with ‘Kes’, a kestrel hawk. Frequently described as ‘honest’ and ‘raw’ this is a story of how an animal can positively impact on human life. Kes inspires Billy to ‘soar’ and find passion in an otherwise harsh and hopeless life.

Our British countryside is teeming with life this time of year. To save you getting lost in a wilderness of animal and nature books, here are some of the best to be found. Grab the butterfly net and the binoculars; it’s time to go on a back-garden safari.

The British Countryside

Not released until June 2012Collins Complete Guides - British Coastal Wildlife If you are opting for a ‘staycations’ and holidaying in Britain, reserve this book at the same time as booking your holiday. Our coastlines are quite literally swimming in extraordinary wildlife. This guide covers over 400 species of animals and plants found along our shores and will make a great companion for when you ‘like to be beside the seaside’.

Leafing through this book is like sticking your head straight into a rock-pool. It has clear pictures, descriptions and is packed with information to appeal to even the truest of nature enthusiasts.

The Sarsen Trial and Neolithic Marathon,

one of Wiltshire’s important leisure events will take place on Sunday 6th May 2012. A significant date for serious runners, walkers and cyclists, it is also a fun day for families wanting to enjoy the countryside and raise money for Wiltshire Wildlife Trust.

This year’s event includes the Full and Half Marathon, a range of walks (7, 11, 15 and 26 miles) and a new route for the 25 mile multi-terrain, circular mountain bike route, starting and ending at Stonehenge. This new cycling route will this year go through Salisbury Plain allowing cyclists to enjoy the vast beauty of this unique landscape.

The Wiltshire Wildlife Trust is celebrating its 50th year anniversary and hopes to raise even more funds to continue its critical conservation work supporting and developing a sustainable future for wildlife and people.

“This is a rare opportunity for people to access an area which is usually closed to the public and to enjoy this spectacular landscape. I am also pleased

to say that we have been given permission to take this year’s cycling route through Salisbury Plain. We had over 2,300 people taking part last year and I expect this year will be no exception. The marathon places are limited and in our 50th year we expect a record attendance, so I urge people to sign on as soon as possible,” says Sarsen Trail coordinator Derek Gard.

It’s a fabulous, fun-filled day on a route full of ups and downs and a mixture of grassland and farm tracks stretching across stunning landscape from the Vale of

Pewsey, through the Avon Valley and across the wilds of Salisbury Plain.

For wildlife watchers, the northern

half of the route from Avebury to Redhorn

Hill is an area rich in wildlife and

you can expect to see skylarks,

brown hares, sedge warblers and kingfishers. The route

crosses fields and country

lanes as well as a couple of busier roads and a railway line.

The route is fully stewarded with first aid cover and support vehicles and a free coach service is offered for walkers between the starting and finishing points. The Trust provides regular water and toilet stops with refreshments available along the route.

All participants who cross the finish line at Stonehenge receive free refreshments at the end, along with a medal awarded to all those who finish their chosen route. Thanks to English Heritage those with medals will have the opportunity to enter the Stonehenge site for free for the rest of the day.

Entry fees cover the Trust’s costs for organising the event and more funds can be raised for Wiltshire Wildlife Trust through individual sponsorship. This year WWT are asking participants to take their £50 challenge and to raise a minimum of £50 sponsorship. Sponsorship forms can be downloaded from the website.

For further information visit www.wiltshirewildlife.org or email [email protected]. Online booking will be available from Monday 16th January 2012.

Get A Look

Putting a price on your hair

It’s crucial to establish how much you are willing to pay for your hair-service, as salon prices vary widely. Local hairdressers are generally cheaper, while inner city salons and those that boast award-winning stylists can cost considerably

more. But, if you are willing to invest in your tresses and don’t mind the extra spend, look out for a salon that belongs to the British Hairdressing Fellowship, as these teams are sure to be at the top of their game.

Usually salons structure prices around the level of skill and expertise

of their stylists and colour technicians. So, if you have a particular issue with your hair - such as it being over processed and damaged, or in need of a colour correction procedure - then it is certainly worth spending that extra bit of money to take advantage of the most highly experienced and skilled member

of the team. However, if you are just after a simple trim or all-over colour, then a visit to a junior stylist is an affordable and sensible option.

Taking advantage of free consultations

It’s a good idea to check out a

You’ll Love - from a salon that’s perfect for you

We all need a change from time to time and a great hair colour, manageable cut and fashion-forward finish is all that’s needed to make us look and feel amazing. However, finding a hairdresser that will deliver what we want and at a price we can afford can be difficult. So, it’s important to think carefully about choosing a salon that’s right for you, before taking the plunge and trying out a whole new look.

hairdresser’s website before paying them a visit in order to get a ‘feel’ for the place and to check out the cost of services on offer. A very trendy salon may be perfect for those looking for a cutting edge cut in contemporary surroundings, however it wouldn’t suit someone after a quiet and altogether more traditional setting.

Take advantage of the free consultations that practically all salons provide, before making the decision to book in. Not only will you pick up some great information from those in the know, but you will also get a chance to observe the techniques they use and how well the staff interact with their customers.

Most salons have separate colour technicians and stylists, meaning that your colour will be applied

by one member of staff and the cut and finish created by another. This ensures that you always get the very best treatment at each stage of the process.

Talking to the experts

Find a hairdresser that is in tune with your style requirements. If you love to make a statement and aren’t afraid to be bold, then booking in with a super trendy stylist who can inject some of their own creative flair into your look is a great idea. But, if you are more reserved and want to keep things classic when looking for a change, opt for a stylist that shares your sentiments.

It’s great to get an expert opinion on what will suit you, but it is essential to be satisfied with the end result. Your stylist may tell you that you will look

amazing with a short style, but if you love your long locks, don’t be talked into making a change that you will regret.

Matching hairstyle to lifestyle

Always explain your lifestyle to your hairdresser - a hairstyle that requires 45 minutes styling time, is not ideal for someone with a very busy life.

Stay realistic about what can be achieved with your hair type and always illustrate your style ideas with pictures, to give your stylist a clear understanding of what you would like to accomplish.

And once you have found a great hairdresser, be sure to hold on to them.

Custom World are proud to be celebrating their 30th Anniversary this year and plan to make it a year to remember.

They are excited to announce an opportunity for anyone living in Dorset, Wiltshire or Hampshire to have a bedroom or home office designed and installed free, up to the value of £3,000. Russell Bowyer, the Managing Director, explained that they would like to be able to give something back to the community for the support the business has received in all the 30 years since it started back in 1982.

They are now inviting people to write or email and nominate

a friend or family member, saying why they deserve to have their bedroom or home office transformed with beautiful custom made fitted furniture.

The lucky winner chosen by the panel of judges will receive a free design consultation and work with the designer to create the room of their dreams. Their furniture will be manufactured by a team of professional joiners and finally installed in their home by Custom World’s in-house fitters.

If you know someone who really deserves to be spoilt, perhaps someone you know who works or has worked in the past, tirelessly for others and selflessly, or maybe

someone who has had more than their fair share of hardship in their life, they would love to hear about them in a short letter or email.

The successful person will be able to choose any colour and design from their vast range and if they wish, they can visit Custom World’s workshop to see their furniture being made.

Please send nominations to [email protected] or write to 38 Cobham Road, Ferndown Industrial Estate, Wimborne, BH21 7NP.

Wilton Rotary Club is growing

The membership of Wilton Rotary Club received a welcome boost at its first meeting of the New Year on 9th January when President Jeff Gyles welcomed two new members: Aubrey Steel and Nigel Thorne. Aubrey, from Coombe Bissett, is the proprietor of A1 Roadcraft, a driving school specialising in motor cycles, minibuses and lorries. For several years he has been one of the Club’s Business Partners providing one of his lorries as the stage for Rotary Spireworks. Nigel, who lives in Salisbury, recently retired from the post of Headmaster of St John’s College Southsea, having previously been Headmaster of Rydal School Colwyn Bay, Deputy Headmaster at Caterham and Head of Geography at Harrow.

Several members of the Club’s growing group of supporters, the Friends of

Wilton Rotary, joined Rotarians at the meeting which received an update on the activities of the Rotary Foundation from guest speaker Alan Hollands, Immediate Past President of Ringwood Rotary Club.

During 2011 fundraising events organised by Wilton Rotary enabled it to make donations averaging £500 to more than 30, mostly local, charities including the Wilton Group of Riding For The Disabled Association whose Chairman Carol Carvell was among the guests at the meeting. In addition during the same period the Club marshalled several fundraising events for other charities including the Walk For Wards and Supercars at Wilton House which raised more than £90,000 for the benefitting charities.

What About Insurance? Landlords and tenants should take care to review any existing policies when renting or letting a property for the fi rst time as some standard insurance products will either not provide cover, or might place restrictions on cover, for rented property and/or its contents.

A failure to inform your insurer that you are renting/letting a property could invalidate any subsequent claim. It is for a landlord to insure the building and his/her contents, fi xtures and fi ttings.

The tenants are responsible for insuring any of their own possessions. There are various specialist insurance products designed for landlords and tenants and rented property:- Buildings, Contents, Legal Expenses, Emergency Repair cover, Rental Guarantee cover etc.

Growing your own peppers is not much more involved than growing tomatoes,

so why not give it a try? Pepper plants can be unbelievably pretty too, with fruits in a range of shapes and colour, generally on compact plants and preceded by small and very pretty white flowers. This is a plant with great ornamental as well as edible potential.

Both chilli and sweet - or bell - peppers can be grown in a greenhouse border, in a sunny spot in the garden in warmer parts of the country, or on a sunny, sheltered spot on the patio. The heavier, earlier crop will come if you grow the plants in a greenhouse or conservatory, but it is well worth growing them outside too.

Sweet peppers, especially the red ones, are very high in vitamin A and both red and green peppers are also very high in vitamin C. Chilli peppers also have a good supply of vitamins C and A and in addition, contain both beta-carotene and something called capsaicin which is believed to have a useful effect on blood cholesterol levels.

The seeds are readily obtainable from many catalogues or garden centres but make sure you take into account the level of heat that each type delivers. Most seed packets and catalogues do make it very clear.

Sow the seeds between now and early April. I use a multi-purpose or a seed compost, but for good germination you will need to provide a bit of extra warmth,

ideally from a heated propagator positioned in a spot where it receives plenty of natural light. If you don’t have the time or facilities to raise your own from seed, you can always buy a few plants in a garden centre or send off for them. We offer two tasty varieties as part of my ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system (see www.pippagreenwood.com for details).

Keep the plants a tiny bit drier than you would a tomato plant and feed regularly with a high-potash liquid feed (most readily available as a ‘tomato food’). This helps to keep the plants growing strongly and the potash will encourage plenty of flowers and so fruits to form.

If you are going for plants in pots, choose a planter that has good drainage and is 30cm (12in) or more in diameter, adding broken pots for extra drainage. Once there is no danger of

late frosts you can put them outside in a sheltered, sunny spot.

If you’re after the hottest possible heat from your chilli peppers, then you’ll find this comes from fruits that are totally ripe and from peppers that are grown in warmer conditions.

If you are growing sweet peppers in patio pots then you are likely to find that there are still some unripened fruits on the plants when temperatures start to fall at the end of summer and well into autumn. To increase the chances of these ripening and increasing to full size, move the pots to a warmer spot or, if possible, to a porch, conservatory or greenhouse where they’ll get extra warmth and also plenty of natural light.

If you want chillies that look particularly good on the patio there are plenty to choose from. ‘Black Pearl’ is a hot chilli pepper with a distinct blackish tinge to

the mature leaves and fruits that are black early on and

mature darkest red. For classic chillis with

bright red, finger shaped fruits try ‘Thai Dragon’.

4 x salmon fillets, skinned6 tbsp teriyaki sauce1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed250g packet medium egg noodles2 tsp sesame seed oil

1 tsp grated root ginger6 salad onions, trimmed and thinly slices40g radishes, trimmed and thinly sliced2 tbsp sesame seeds30ml honey, warmed

This is a great way to jazz up salmon – with a Japanese

teriyaki sauce glaze served with sesame fl avoured

noodles. Soak the wooden skewers in water for 30

minutes before threading on the strips of salmon to

prevent them from burning under the hot grill.

Serves 4Ready in 40 minutes

plus 30 minutes marinating

Glazed Salmon Skewers with Sesame Noodles

1. Slice each salmon fillet widthways into 2 strips and place the strips in a shallow dish. Mix together the teriyaki sauce and garlic and pour over the salmon. Cover and leave to marinate at room temperature for 30 minutes.

2. Preheat the grill to medium. Thread the strips of salmon onto 8 wooden skewers. Grill the salmon skewers for 3-4 minutes on each side until just cooked through.

3. Meanwhile, cook the noodles according to the packet instructions. Drain well. Heat the sesame oil in a wok or large non-stick frying pan and add the ginger, spring onions, radishes and sesame seeds. Stir fry for 2-3 minutes then Add the noodles and toss well to mix.

4. Just before serving, brush the salmon skewers with the warmed honey and grill for a further few minutes. Divide the sesame noodles between four serving bowls and top with the salmon skewers.

TipTo save time buy a small jar of ready prepared ginger puree rather than buying fresh root ginger – once opened it will keep in the fridge for a few weeks and is great for adding an Oriental fl avour to rice and stir fries.

From high-tech haircare to minimalist male grooming kit, technology wants to help you look your best - and in some cases, that means zapping yourself with a laser beam. That’s the idea behind Philips’ Lumea range, which promises easy, long lasting hair removal via Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology. It, and rival devices, are expensive - the RRP of the Lumea SC2001 is £400, although it’s widely available for under £300 - but if you have the right kind of hair (primarily dark haired) it’s apparently very effective.

Beams of light aren’t just for hair removal: they can help with mild to moderate acne too. The no!no! Skin device (about £129) promises to clear 81% of mild acne in 24 hours, and unlike other treatments doesn’t involve chemicals, creams, lotions or potions. From user reviews on the web the majority of people seem delighted: it’s quite pricey but it does seem to work for most customers.

Philips reckons that lasers can even help fight visible signs of ageing: its ReAura technology “stimulates your skin’s natural cell renewal process, targeting several

signs of ageing”. It’s even more expensive than the Lumea - the RRP is £799 - and it’s a new and therefore relatively untried product,

so you might want to hang on before splashing out. If you’d like to try it in the meantime, the ReAura is available exclusively from branches of Space NK.

Fancy cleaning your make-up with sound waves? Clarisonic’s sonic skincare devices look like rather odd brushes, but they use sonic technology to remove make-up more effectively than any beauty wipe and promise to

reduce oily areas, dry skin patches and blemishes. Prices start at £155 for the Classic model and £179 for the three-speed Plus, which can be used on your body as well as on your face, and there

are different brush heads for different skin types and applications. The product reviews are impressive: at the time of writing 2,046 out of 2,046 customers would recommend Clarisonic’s products to others.

Technology has made its way to hair straighteners too. Corioliss’s hair irons use titanium rather than the more common ceramics for better heat distribution, infra-red heat warms hair without drying it out, and negative ions promise to reduce static and frizz. The irons are at the higher end of the hair straightening price range - the C2 model costs around

£120 - but beauty editors rave about them.

High-tech grooming isn’t just for women.

BaByliss’s description of its EasyCut hair trimmer (around £22) sounds like a vehicle, with a “V2 enhanced power system” and “precision engineered V2 rotary blades”. It’s easy to mock, but the product itself is quite clever: rather than traditional trimmers, the EasyCut is shaped like a hockey puck for easy one-handed operation. The firm also makes the appallingly named i-Stubble, which promises “absolute control and precision” for keeping stubble under control.

Technology has even made it into the bathroom. Oral-B’s SmartSeries range of electric toothbrushes contain more technology than the first moon rockets: there are motors that pulse 40,000 times and oscillate 8,800 times per minute, pressure sensors to ensure you’re not brushing too hard, five modes to cover everything from scraping off lunch to making your teeth whiter, and a separate LCD display that “helps maximise brushing performance” and that also doubles as a clock. Despite all the technology, the price is less than you

might expect: at the time of writing, the SmartSeries 5000 is widely available for £79.99.

Some time ago I was ruminating in a slightly melancholy vein about what life would be like as empty-

nesters. Would my wife and I be a bit sad? A bit lonely? Would we miss our little chickadees?

Well, no we won’t. Because they’re NOT GOING!

We always knew we’d be stuck with the boy, who has started tech. But what I didn’t realise (admittedly, because I never listen) is that he’s only going three days a week. Further, he’s studying music technology, so his homework seems to be very loud indeed. When I was his age I did try my best to make as much noise with my music as he manages with his, but since I was stuck with the discarded family Dansette while he seems to have the equivalent of The Who’s PA system I failed to make quite as much impact as he does. Also, the music of my teens was slightly more melodic than the thumpy stuff his generation favours – rock’n’roll may not be noise pollution, but dubstep most certainly is.

Then we learnt that the girl isn’t going either. She was one grade off her first choice, but was offered a place for next year – yeah, that’s right, when the fees go up – and rather than settle for her second choice she decided to take a gap year. So, is she off backpacking around the Far East? No. She’s taking her gap year at home, that’s what. At least she’s not as noisy as he is, but we’re still lumbered with the pair of them.

Well, I suppose it’s quite nice really, having them around the place. I’m kind of used to them, in a way, and there’ll

certainly be a big them-shaped hole in our lives when they finally do go. In the meantime, though, Dad’s Taxis is not going into liquidation, and the home laundry service remains as gargantuan an enterprise as ever.

In fact Dad’s Taxis seems to be expanding. The boy is supposed to take a ludicrously early bus in the morning for his hour-and-a-half journey into college, which seems a ridiculous amount of time for a 20-mile trip. Not surprisingly, he doesn’t always make it, and as he has to be there by 9am, that means the dog is still waiting to be walked by the time the taxi-driver arrives back. So that’s an hour off the working day for starters.

In her case, it’s job interviews. Although the town I live in has some 30,000 souls it doesn’t seem to have anything in the way of facilities, not even a job centre. Nor does it have any buses, or at least none of them seem to go where we want them to, and the timetables appear to have been devised by someone who thinks that while everybody wants to flee the town, nobody wants to come back. Or not on the same day that they left, at any rate. So it’s Dad’s Taxis to the rescue, and more hours lopped off the working day.

When my generation came to this point in our lives, we were simply taught to drive and bought an old banger (a pale-blue Ford Anglia, in my case). But things have changed, and not for the better. We took one look at how much it would cost to insure them to learn to drive with us and turned deathly pale. And that’s before paying for driving lessons (that’s the drawback with twins – double bubble!) and then insuring them once they pass. You’d have to be a millionaire. And we’re not. So Dad’s Taxis it is.
