On October 7th 2014, the Southridge Middle School
volleyball team had its first game versus Fontana Middle
School. The games were held in the Fontana Middle
School gym. Both Varsity and Junior Varsity steered them-
selves to a victorious game of 25-4 for Varsity and 25-12
for JV. Although the JV team lost to Almeria on October 9th,
Varsity kept its winning streak alive beating Almeria. The
volleyball teams are coached by Southridge teachers, Cin-
dy Gray and Debra Washington. ”The volleyball team is
working hard doing everything they need to be doing,” said
Coach Ms. Washington.
Since then, the volleyball team has continued its ex-
cellent play in the Fontana division. The Varsity squad is
currently undefeated in six matches. In addition to a strong
start, Southridge students are always at the games to sup-
port the volleyball teams. Between the strong start and the
popularity of the volleyball games at school, this looks like it
will be a strong volleyball season for Southridge Middle
School.
“I am mind-blown with their pro-
gress and I think they need to
work on quickening up their
skills and playing by the funda-
mentals.”

Students of the Month - September
The Ravine An original Story by Luis Nunez
There was a quiet and soft whistle carrying out through the ra-
vine. It was dull, yet eerie, and was pitched enough to awaken
the silhouette laying on the hard rock floor. The figure rose, una-
ware of all the “eyes” peering into the back of its neck. It stood
as if its knees were about to buckle, it seemed unsure and weak.
The figure regained its balance and began walking towards the
pitch-black cavern located in the far corner of the ravine. It con-
tinued until it was adsorbed by the darkness, likely never to be
seen again.
I saw nothing, it was most likely because my fire had been extinguished due to the damp and cold air. I had been
trapped in this forsaken hole for two days now and that fire was my only hope of finding my make-shift cot in the
darkness. It was only the night before when I tried to climb out, only to have the ledge I was on, collapse and send me
back to where I had begun. Returning to my cavern was going to give me some hope of surviving, but my resting
place was gone, nowhere to be seen. I had absolutely no energy or supplies to build a new one. I laid on the floor,
desperate for light or food. And then I noticed the large, hunched over creature blocking the dim embers from my line
of sight.
I couldn’t make any other noise other than a small squeak, due to the lump in my throat. Unfortunately that was
enough for that thing to rotate its head and reveal its hollow eye sockets. It was obviously blind, making its other
senses keener and more sensitive; the one quiet noise I had somehow produced was enough to alert it. It’s back
straightened slightly and it began to move slowly towards where I was now standing up, taking a few steps back out
of pure fear. It approached me and it seemed to make eye contact even though there was no possible way it could see.

School Lunch - Your Opinions!
In the month of October, about 100 students were interviewed about the lunch in this school. There
were a variety of questions pertaining about free lunch, the lines, the snack bar entrees, etc. The re-
sults were rather surprising; many students wanted the school board to “improve” the lunch choices.
Many students felt that the school board should expand the snack bar entrées, since they’re mostly
pizzas with different toppings. Relating to the lunch line; many students have said it has recently im-
proved and is moving along much faster.
Many of the interviewed students also said that the food could use some improvement. The lunch is
fine as it is now, but we all know it could still be improved for the students at Southridge Middle
School.
Teacher Spotlight:
Ms. Gray
by Sarah Dupree
This month’s teacher spotlight focuses on Ms. Gray! Ms. Gray has
been at Southridge for eleven years. When asking Ms. Gray what she
likes about Southridge, she replied, “I like the people and kids, and
how the staff are willing to share ideas with each other.” the one thing Ms. Gray enjoys about her stu-
dents is when they have an OMG moment and when they laugh at all of her jokes. Ms. Gray was asked
about the topics that they are working on in class, and she said they were working plots and analyzing.
Ms. Gray would like to change the world by making education free for everyone around the world. The
activities she likes to do in her free time are film production, home remodeling, traveling, and socializ-
ing. Ms. Gray’s main goal is getting in shape.
Student Spotlights
7th Grade: Melanie Richards by Melissa Ortega
This week’s seventh grade student spotlight is Melanie Richards.
Her favorite sport is snowboarding and she does that in her free
time as well as water ski, skateboard, and horseback riding. Not
only does she ride horses, but she actually owns a horse named
Roxy.
Melanie lives alone with her mom, and she has three older siblings.
She loves Southridge because it has brought new things into her
life, she does not regret coming here at all. She has had straight A’s almost all
her life.
8th Grade: Ethan Real
by Alex Rivas
Ethan is intelligent, caring, and very focused on school. He is regu-lar teen that likes to listen to music on his own time, but when he needs to get something done he gets it done. Ethan isn't so active but he very interested in art. He hopes one day he could become a famous well known artist, but if not he would like to study astrology. Ethan gets all of his inspiration from his family and is very thankful for them. Ethan Real is a great student to have at Southridge.
ASK ANNIE Dear Annie,
Hi, I need advice. If you
have a friend who al-
ways says that she is
YOUR friend, but
doesn't pay attention to
you and hangs out with
another girl who also
doesn't pay attention to
you and says, “You don’t get my life, only she does!”
What should I do?
-Sincerely
Unfriended
Dear Unfriended,
Think about it this way - is she really your friend if there is another person whom she hangs out more with? Sure, she is your friend, but you have other friends and if it bothers you too much. Confront your friend and tell her your feeling left out, and be friends as a group.
-Sincerely Annie
Avid Interview By Emily Alvarez, Crystal De Haro, Matthew Prado
Lola Ochoa is an 8th grade AVID student and we asked how was AVID different then last year?
Lola replied, “Last year was learning notes, this year we are using the notes in class.” Another
question was what do you hope to accomplish with AVID? Lola said, “I’d like to go to college and
show others AVID curriculum.”
Andrew Hernandez is 7th grade AVID student and we asked about how he feels about his AVID
class. He said currently they are doing binder checks and tutorials. He said, “I joined AVID because
I wanted to pick my grades up and have a better life for myself in the future.” His AVID class is a
very focused elective because it helps students get prepared and ready for college success.
Dear Annie,
My parents split up and I don’t know what to
do.
-Sincerely
Mixed Feelings
Dear Mixed Feelings,
Well, if you feel like it’s your fault, its not.
Many people don’t have their parents togeth-
er in the same house. You'll get through it,
your parents love and care about you and all
you have to do is think positive! There is al-
ways a light at the end of the tunnel...
-Sincerely Annie
