California is located on the West Coast of the United States. It was admitted to the Union as the 31st state on September 9, 1850.

The highest and lowest points in the lower 48 states are located within the state (Mount Whitney and Death Valley,) as well as the largest trees (Giant Redwood,) the tallest trees (California Redwood,) and the oldest trees (Western bristlecone pine.)

The state’s economy includes fruit and vegetable production, high-tech industry, aerospace, and education. Tourism is also included in California’s important industries.

California is bordered by Oregon to the north, Nevada to the east, Arizona to the southeast, and the Mexican state of Baja California to the south.

Luiseno Indian BasketBasketry was one of the Native American Luiseño tribes most valued skills. They designed and wove their baskets according to what they were to be used for — gathering food, traditional ceremonies, and more. Some baskets were woven tight enough to carry water. Others were woven so that they could be set on hot coals in which food was roasted. The Luiseño peoples lived in small villages along the Southern California coast.

A series of 21 California missions were built to “colonize” the territory — native Indians brought to the mission were baptized and “civilized.”
