Veterinary Feed Directive Starting January 1st, 2017 there are major changes coming regarding access to medicated feeds for all livestock, including show ani-mals. The United States Food and Drug Administration will be implementing a new set of rules, known as Guidance 209. This set of rules governs antibiotic use in animals raised for food. Included with this newsletter is a handout with more specific information. It is critical that you read and understand the information, as it will impact your ability to purchase medicated feeds. If you have questions on the Veterinary Feed Directive please contact your local extension office.

Leadership Development Conference Sign up now for LDC and 4-H Day at the Capitol, January 28th-30th. Join senior 4-H members from across Colorado at this out-standing leadership event, then see our state government at work. Meat Quality Assurance

All 4-H members in breeding and market beef, sheep, swine, goats, poultry, rabbits, dairy animal and horse projects must complete Meat Quality Assurance training the first two years they show livestock, and then again when they change age divisions. You may attend any MQA in the area; be sure to sign in and complete the quiz so your county will know you attended. The hands-on learning stations will be used again with changes in the stations. This is a come and learn-by-doing training that will take approximately an hour to complete. Parents and leaders are strongly encouraged to attend. Times and locations will be announced in a future newslet-ter. Plan to attend one of these sessions:

March 16th - Cheyenne County

March 17th - Bent County

March 20th - Baca County

March 21st - Prowers County

March 22nd - Otero/Crowley County

March 23rd - Kiowa County

4-H Enrollment Again for 2016/2017 year we will be using the 4-H Online program to enroll members. 4-H Online is a secure database that has been in use for quite a few years now in Colorado. Families will need to login to the 4-H Online site and complete the enrollment process. All counties will be providing very specific instructions, but don’t hesitate to ask for help. Also, if you do not have access to a com-puter or would like to have our help we can schedule a time to help you enroll at your Extension office. To complete your enrollment, you must pay club fees as set by your county following the county process. Enrollment deadline is February 1 in Cheyenne County, March 1 in Baca, Bent, Crowley, Kiowa, Otero and Prowers Counties.

The Colorado State University 4-H Office has put together some excellent resources on 4-H Online. The link to these resources is https://www.colorado4h.org/ye/.

4H Online – Email Blasts

From time to time the State office will be sending emails directly to the 4-H members. It is the easiest and most effective way to communicate important State events and requirements. We know that not everyone particularly enjoys the extra emails and there have been requests to be unsubscribed. It is important to know that if you do that, you would not receive any re-enrollment emails or information the County office sends directly to you. Please do not “unsubscribe.”

2017 WRLF

Celebrate the centennial anniversary of 4-H in Alberta as we focus on Community • Friendship • Opportunity.

Cat Showmanship 101

Do I need a fancy breed of cat to be able to show?

• Nope! As long as your cat is healthy and is above the minimum age required by your county, you can show her. If you are not sure what breed your cat is, you can say they are a Domestic Short Hair or Domestic Long Hair.

What do I need to do to prepare for the show?

• You should practice holding and examining your cat as much as possible, so that she will be comfortable for the show and you will feel prepared. You should also brush her a few times a week and trim her claws a few days prior to the show. About three days before the show, you should bathe your cat. This will give the natural oils time to return to her coat, making it shiny and healthy. On the day of the show, use a cotton ball to clean around your cat’s ears and eyes.

What do I need to know about my cat?

• First of all, you should tell the judge your cat’s name, age, and breed. You should be able to tell the judge what vaccinations and health treatments your cat has received. Check with your local Extension Office to verify what vaccinations your cat is required to have. You should also know how much and what food you give your cat, whether or not she is spayed or he is neutered, and what you have done to prepare her for the show.

What is the difference between a conformation class and a showmanship class?

• During the conformation class, the judge will be evaluating your cat and comparing her to the rest of the cats entered in her class. She will be looking at things like whether or not your cats has broken teeth, if her eyes are clear or watery, if her coat is healthy, and her ears are clean. During the showmanship class, the judge will be evaluating you on your ability to handle your cat, your knowledge of your cat and her breed, as well as your general cat knowledge.

What should I wear?

• Your outfit does not need to be fancy or expensive. It should be clean, neat, and simple. You should wear long pants and a nice shirt and close-toed shoes.

What should I bring?

• Well, you should definitely bring your cat! But you should bring her in a clean carrier with enough space that she can turn around and a towel or blanket in the bottom. You should also bring a litter box, food and water, something to cover the cage, and grooming supplies.

Is there anything else to know?

• Yes! Have fun and stay relaxed. Cats are very sensitive animals and they will know if you are nervous. During the class, feel free to pet your cat to keep them calm.

Veterinary Feed Directive and Guidance 209

What do you need to know?

1. On January 1st, 2017, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will require a Veterinary

Feed Directive (VFD) for all medically important antibiotics administered in livestock feed

and water.

2. Over-the-counter sales of medically important antibiotics will also end.

3. In order to acquire a VFD you will need to have a Veterinarian Client Patient Relationship

(VCPR) and then you will be able to gain access to these antibiotics. It then becomes your

responsibility to keep records for two years.

How does this affect 4-H?

1. It will affect all individuals who have previously fed medicated feeds or used over the

counter antibiotics in water.

2. You will need to update your VCPR and attain a VFD in order to acquire these antibiotics.

3. You will need to communicate with whoever you get your feed from to determine what you

plan to do to address this change.

4. You will no longer to able to go purchase bagged feed or feed of any kind with medically im-

portant antibiotics unless you have a VFD in place.

5. Prepare for this change and make sure you have everything you need in place.

The State requires an open enrollment policy; youth and leaders may enroll in 4-H year round. This gives us the opportunity to reach more members with the 4-H program. However, all enrollments must be com-pleted by March 1, 2017 to compete at the 2017 Bent County Fair.

The Heart of 4-H

Bring a friend who’s interested in 4-H and join us as we celebrate the Heart in 4-H on February 10 at 12 noon at the Extension Office. We’ll start with pizza, play a few games, have a very short council meeting, then make Valentine treats for the HealthCare Center. Prospective members will get 4H swag. Council will furnish pizza. Bring a bag of individually wrapped candy for the Val-entine treats. This party will fulfill council meeting at-tendance requirement, and will be a community service for those who visit the nursing home. Remember to invite friends who might enjoy 4-H to come along!

Newsletters to be Emailed in 2017 Beginning with this newsletter, we will email newsletters instead of mailing them. If you need to receive a mailed hard-copy, contact the office and we’ll mail yours.
