ANTONIO CATHOLIC SCHOOL

Volume 44 Issue 9

NEWSLETTER

Reception Starr and Reception / Year 1 Little celebrating

Reconciliation Week 2019

We show respect. We share this land.

We walk together, Hand in hand.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope this newsletter finds you warm during this wet and windy week. This weather can sometimes provide challenges for

our busy lives but it also provides opportunities too, such as sharing warm food, watching a movie together or playing a board

game that hasn’t been touched for months or years.

At Antonio the children learn so much about themselves and their world with the changing seasons in our environment. On

our recent Saturday morning Principal Tour we experienced a great downpour of rain in such a short space of time which

resulted in a large pond being created on the pavers by the early years verandah. Two young children who had enjoyed seeing

the inside learning spaces at Antonio, proceeded to enjoy this moment by running and jumping through the pond. The look of

delight and pleasure on their faces was memorable. They enjoyed seeing what the water did as it splashed and rippled away

from them in all directions. This was an opportunity that they didn’t want to miss.

We all love to explore the world around us and our relationships with it no matter what age we are. We recognise that our

children come to school as capable learners who have developed strategies for learning about their world. Our role in

partnership with you is to support your children to continue to learn and develop their capabilities for learning that is life-long

so they can lead, create, innovate, communicate and engage with increasing understanding and wisdom.

Nature Play Development Progress

We are continuing to progress this project as quickly as we can so that we can establish wonderful outside learning spaces that

complement and enrich the inside spaces we are continuing to improve at Antonio. As mentioned previously in the

newsletter, we have been required to complete our master planning for the entire site before we can develop this nature play

space. This process is continuing with the Catholic Education Office with the brief completed and the process for working with

school representatives and an architect to begin soon. I am looking forward to providing further updates soon.

Mary Help of Christians Day

Last Friday was a wonderful celebration for our community and parish. It provided a wonderful opportunity for us to reflect on

Mary and her relationship with God as well as our relationship with God and our faith community here. The children were

engaged in so many creative ways through art, prayer, gardening, technology and music. Thank you to Lillian who co-

ordinated the day and to her support crew which included staff, students and volunteers. These days don’t just happen

without the efforts of many. Lillian Van Brussel will be providing further information about the day in her newsletter

contribution.

Some of our children shared these thoughts about Mary Help of Christians Day…

Niall – “I liked when we made the bracelets and the cross.”

Dexter – “I enjoyed making the cross. I painted it all of the colours which were white, brownish red, yellow and black.”

Ben – “I enjoyed singing the song about Mary Help of Christians. I enjoyed learning that new song.”

Ila – “I liked doing gardening because it is fun. I planted one of the weird looking seeds in a plastic pot.”

Sophia – “I enjoyed the beads. I had yellow, red, white and black beads. They are now on the shelf in my lounge room so

everyone can see it.”

Fabian – “I liked the beads activity. My beads are in my room at home. I also liked the art activity.”

Jordan – “I enjoyed making the cross because I liked painting it. The cross reminds me of God. I have a cross at home that is

decorated with swirlies.”

Locking of Gates

We are locking the front and back gates each morning at 9.00am and unlocking them in the afternoons at 2.45pm. This helps

us provide a safe and secure site for children, staff and volunteers to move and learn freely within. If you are staying at school

as a volunteer in the mornings I recommend that you park and enter or exit through the front entrance to the school to avoid

walking around the block during the wet and cooler days. You might prefer that if you are counting your steps though.

Uniforms

With winter upon us it is important the children are warm and dry. Thank you for supporting your children to wear the

designated uniform each day. By having a consistent uniform across the school, our children’s qualities, achievements and

personalities take centre stage rather than their clothes. If it is a wet day your children are welcome to wear a rain jacket that

is navy blue (available at Lowes for $20) over their jumper and rugby top. Rain jackets are a better option to parkers as they

can be folded and kept in bags when they are dry and take up far less space.

Parking

When parking in the surrounding streets, please respect and consider our neighbours by leaving their drive ways clear for them

to exit and enter their homes safely. We value the relationships with our neighbours and I thank you in anticipation of your

support in helping before and after school to be a safe time for everyone.

Outstanding Antonio Assemblies

I encourage you to keep an eye out on SeeSaw or in the newsletter for further information about upcoming assemblies. These

are a wonderful showcase of the great learning that is taking place across the community at all ages. It is always wonderful to

see the children sharing their learning so enthusiastically and our students in the audience appreciating the great efforts and

achievements. We have a great deal to celebrate each and every day and at our assemblies.

APRIM NEWS

Mary Help of Christians Feast Day 2019

Mary Help of Christians is the patron saint of Australia and also the name of

our parish. We celebrate her day, the 24th May as our Feast Day. It was

fabulous to see our students enjoying this day at school last Friday. Their

voices jubilantly filled the church as they engaged in the music and sang their

hearts out. We were approached by parishioners and priests who felt very

blessed and enlivened as they celebrated this special day alongside the

Antonio School Community.

It didn’t end there. Back at school we had a fun but fruitful day as we made

connections with our Aboriginal brothers and sisters and their mothers as well

as the Kaurna land on which our school sits and how to look after it.

We talked about how Mary suffered as her son Jesus was vilified and

marginalised as he went about His ministry teaching people to love one

another. Mary suffered ultimately when her Son was put to death on the

cross. Our Aboriginal mothers have suffered as they watch their children

vilified and marginalised and when historically they were taken away (The

Stolen Generation) from their families in some cases never to be seen again.

We talked about forgiveness, saying sorry and looking after our school

environment that the Kaurna people have cared for over xdx1000’s of years!

We are extremely grateful for the parents and friends of our community that

came along to support the activities which would not have happened as

successfully without them. We are also extremely grateful to the Antonio

staff that organised and coordinated activities.

Most of all we are grateful that we were blessed to come together on this

special day to have fun and celebrate Mary Help of Christians Day.
