It is very im- portant to sign up in advance for any Lunch & Learn Programs since a count is necessary to be sure enough food is ordered. SOUTHBURY SENIOR CENTER! Page 2!

From Our Senior Services Director

Happy July 4th! We have settled into a very busy summer schedule with all of our regular programming as well as some spe-cial events. I hope many of you took advantage of the amazing Health and Leisure Fair that took place at the Jewish Federation at the end of June. We were proud to collaborate with the Federation to bring a great re-source fair to you! We are looking forward to a new luncheon program taking place on Mondays starting July 9th. New Oppor-tunities has offered us the opportunity to have a soup and salad bar every Monday. The program will be at noon and will run the same as café: registration with NOW, advanced registration and a suggested donation of $3.00 - $5.00. We anticipate this to be a welcome addition to our Tuesday/Thursday program. Please stop by the front office for more details. We continue to experience incredible attendance here at the Center and especially on Tuesday and Thursdays. Many of you have commented and brought your frustrations to me regarding the lack of parking. While we have no additional real estate that allows us the ability to add spaces, please know that I have been working with Principal Forish at the Pomperaug Elementary School next door to encourage parents to refrain from parking in the Center’s lot. In addition, upon completion of the repaving of the Town Hall lower lot, we will be permanently moving our buses to spaces in that lot. These new spots (the old bus spaces) will be for com-pact cares only. While it will not make a huge impact, it is my hope that the addition of some spaces will help. I would also like to gently remind everyone that the back of our parking lot is ONE WAY ONLY. Un-fortunately, recently we have had two very near misses with our buses by members driving the wrong way in the one way area. Please remember that the rear lot is one way only in the direction of PES. We are excited to be launching our volunteer program on July 1 and we appreciate everyone’s continuing patience as we start to implement two new volunteer positions here at the Center: The Welcome Desk and Hospitality. Please know that if you are interested in volunteering at the Center we continue to welcome new volunteers. Volunteers will be readily identifiable as they will have red lanyards and volunteer ID badges and those at the Welcome Desk and working in Hospitality will also be wearing red vests. We have been astounded by the level of interest to volunteer and thank you all for wanting to be an active part of your Cen-ter! I wish you a great July full of great friends and summer memories! My door is always open! All my best, Tamath

Wednesday, July 11th 1:00pm - 2:00pm

The book selection for the April discussion is The Miller’s

Valley by Anna Quindlen, which is available now at the

Southbury Public Library. Synopsis: In a small town on the verge of big change, a young woman unearths deep secrets about her family and unexpected truths about herself. Filled with insights that are the hall-mark of Anna Quindlen's bestsellers, Miller's Valley is an emotionally powerful story about a family you will never forget. Miller's Valley is a masterly study of family, memory, loss, and, ultimately, discovery, of finding true identity and a new vision of home. As Mimi says, “No one ever leaves the town where they grew up, even if they go.” Miller's Valley reminds us that the place where you grew up can disappear, and the people in it too, but all will live on in your heart forever.

Tuesday, July 17th 10:30am-11:00am

We hope you will join us for this casual and informal round table discussion.

New! Reflexology with Csilla (pronounced “Cheela”)

Tuesday, July 24th 1:00 – 3:30 pm

There are 7,200 nerve endings in each foot. Nerve endings in the feet have extensive interconnections through the spinal cord and brain with all areas of the body. In reflexology a practitioner will stimulate the meridians on the feet and hands to remove any blockage in the meridian with her hands. Reflexolo-gy reduces pain and stress, enhances overall circula-tion, creates deep relaxation and more!

$20 for 15 minutes feet or hand reflexology, $25 for 20 minutes feet and hand reflexology

Kindness Stones (rescheduled due to the 5/15 storm)

Thursday, July 26th 10:30 – 11:30

Join Kim Pernerewski from Com-fort Keepers of Southbury to create

“Kindness Stones”. The idea behind the kindness stones is to paint them, decorate the stones with in-spirational words and/or pictures, and then “hide” them around the community in the hopes that when they are found they make the person smile, brightening their day. We hope you’ll join us in spreading some kindness! Refreshment will be served. Please sign up at the front desk.

Limited to ten participants.

Chair Massage

Male vs Female Ageing

Wednesday, July 18th 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm

Please join Arthur Gottlieb for a program that dis-cusses the many challenges men and women encoun-ter throughout the ageing process. Primary focus will be on biological differences between the sexes within the context of cultural, societal and interfam-ily expectations. Case examples and audience ques-tions will be used to frame our discussion. Discus-sions will be interactive and conducted in plain lan-guage without any unnecessary psycho-jargon. Please join us in extending heartfelt thanks to Hartford Health Care who will be provid-ing lunch for this event.

July Trips

We will begin taking reservations for the trips by phone (203-262-0651 ) on Thursday, July 5th, at 4:30pm. Please know that you WILL get the answering machine. Please leave one message indicating which trip you would like a reservation for. Leave your full name and tele-phone number, as well as the full name and telephone number of any additional people you are in-cluding with your reservation (their full names and telephone numbers are required to complete the reservation.) Please remember trips are for members only. You will receive an auto-mated call the next day confirming your trip reservation or letting you know if you are on a wait list.

Senior Center Refund Policy

The Senior Center has a policy for trip and program refunds. If you have paid for a program or a trip, and then must cancel, we can only issue a refund if we are able to fill your seat off of the wait list. If the trip or program is canceled by the Senior Center (inclement weather, etc.) you will automatically receive a full re-fund. Refunds, when given, will only be by check and may take up to three weeks to be processed.

Transportation Note For all members using transportation to the Center: The bus will be leaving the Center at 3:30pm for your return home. Thursdays are the excep-tion: the bus will be leaving at 2:45 for your return home. It is your responsibility to be on the bus at the designated times. No exceptions will be made.

Whether attending a class, event or just dropping in, ALL members and guests are required to check in BEFORE entering the class or event. Safety is paramount and we need to know who is in the building at all times and therefore checking in BEFORE entering a class, event or even visiting in the lounge is re-quired of our members and guests to assist our staff in ensuring the ongoing safety of all of our visitors.

We love and thank you for the positive promotion of our classes and events. Many of you have invited friends to try certain classes, however we need to remind you that if a member invites a guest to accom-pany them to a class or event, that guest MUST register at the office PRIOR to entering that class/event and pay the required guest fee. The guest will be required to fill out a basic form including emergency contacts. It is encouraged for guests to plan on arriving early to allow the time to complete the forms and process their guest fee to avoid being late to the class/event.

Please remember that you must call our Transportaon Department to make your reservaons for your trans-

portaon needs. Signing up for programs does not automacally create the transportaon reservaon.!
