Our STC, April meeting in Taylor Texas was attended by approximately 12 members and three Hudson’s, Good Turn Out! Our mem‐bership is in flux as it is renewal time for dues. It appears we will maintain about 30 members for the coming 2014 year? Jerry Potter’s ‘40 Hudson made its First appearance at a monthly meeting looking good ,powered by the same engine he pur‐chased it with after months of working out all the bugs from sitting so long. His new (Milk Tank) be it gas tank that he had custom made due to the rarity of the part Looked very good and no doubt is working out well Jerry had to have it made as a (Milk Tank) because the fellow building it would not allow the words gas tank be mentioned, Ha, go figure. I saw his Hudson coming down Hwy 79 and was expecting Jerry, but it was Mark Campbell behind the wheel. Mark as most of us know has a ‘49 convertible for sale. I sure hope one of our members ends up restoring this car! Personally I am still drool‐ing to commit to this ‘49 as it seems to me even after restoration expenses this car will be money in the bank? Don Brown was the attending member who traveled furthest. Coming all the way from West Columbia Texas, nearly 6 hours and 340 miles roundtrip driving.. Hudson engine has been installed and it is ready to be on the road but for a radiator leak. Hopefully we will see it at our next meeting. This aspect of getting our cars on the road is something that had me fixing and adjusting all the little things that need to be done to make our cars roadworthy and reliable. I am personally anxious to see Don’s car, as he has designed and installed an EFI fuel system for it. I have never seen this done to a Hudson be‐fore. We now have a new Membership offi‐cer, Dave Nault. Dave will handle all matters pertaining to membership to include reaching out to … Cont page 4

April 5th was a typical Spring day in Texas. Cool and cloudy beginning turning to a bright and warm afternoon. Taylor Texas and the EL Corral Lozano restaurant was the destination of the members of the South Texas Chapter. Driving in sans Hudson, Ken and Yolanda Cates found that they were the first to arrive at the restaurant. Deciding to visit a nearby antiquities shop, they saw Lynn Fisk and Steve Brookings. Several minutes later Rick and Barbara Heeke also arrived. At final count twelve members were present for our 2014 business meeting. After an off the menu lunch, President Rodney Lemmon called our meeting to order at 1:00 PM. Ask‐ing for a motion to dispense with reading of the previous meetings minutes (March 2014) and asking for acceptance of those minutes printed in our newsletter the motion was made by Yolanda Cates and seconded by Barbara Heeke. A treasurer’s report was them requested, and Steve Brookins noted the chapter bank account contained $2451.30. (This amount includes dues payments made during the meeting) Old Business was reviewed.

1. The chapter has name tags that need to be distributed 2. Reminder to members to pay their chapter and national dues 3. Members who are planning to attend the Big Country Regional and National HET meetings

should register now 4. Rodney reflected on the need to thank Al Hejl for the great garage tour during March.

New Business 1. Election of officers, request for nominations. None Made, Motion by Rick Heeke to main‐

tain current officers for 2014, seconded by Barbara Heeke, Unanimous membership ap‐proval.

2. Request from Ken Cates, Club payment for postcards and postage to announce joint HET meeting to be held in Waco June 21, 2014. Steve Brookings stated the treasury has suffi‐cient funds, Request for approval, unanimous membership approval.

3. Rodney noted a need for active membership chairman, asked for volunteer. Dave Nault volunteered and was nominated for position, Unanimous membership approval

4. Rodney, requested Ken Cates to remain newsletter editor and webmaster, Ken accepted. 5. Next meeting will be May 3rd in Calvert Texas.

Motion to adjourn meeting requested @ 1:30 pm, motion made by Mark Brians and seconded by Jim Petersen. All members adjourned to Mark Campbell’s near by garage for a tour of the facilities.

Chapter Chatter: Chapter Chatter: South Texas Chapter is now on FacebookSouth Texas Chapter is now on Facebook Mark Brians: As noted in our March newsletter, Mark has been looking a disc brake system compatible with his Hudson fleet. Elsewhere in this issue is a report on what he found and the fitting of this kit to a Stepdown. Don Brown: when ever Don comes to a meeting it is with determination. Again the long distance driver, he shared that his Hudson radiator was giving him fits with leaks. A post meeting communication with Don requested a suit‐able part number for a 7 lb Hudson radiator style cap. Could this be the solu‐tion to stopping the pesky leaks? Check with Don at Calvert. Jerry Potter: The 40 coupe took a trip to Taylor before our meeting. Jerry had

Mark Campbell looking into some of the remaining tasks preventing the car from being a daily driver. Unfortunately while at Marks place it was discovered the transmission in the coupe is in need for repair. Joe Clark: We missed Joe and Karen at the Taylor meet. Something about a Silver Anniversary celebra‐tion elsewhere, Congratulations to the Clarks!. Dave Nault: A nearly rabid supporter of anything Hudson, we are fortunate to have the services of Dave to ignite the passion in others to join our merry band of Hudsonites. Seems that the radiator leak gremlin got to Dave’s Hornet too. Dave made the trip to Taylor riding shotgun with Rodney. Mark and Sandy Campbell: Once again club members were invited to tour the Campbell restoration shop. We got to view all three of

his Hudsons. The 52 is being color sanded and Mark assured us he will be driving a Hudson soon. A lively discussion about engine and body serial numbers ensued and confirmation that one of the engines was indeed the original from a 49 S6 coupe. Jim Petersen: Our college professor member shared that he was pleased to be able to attend the meeting as he is once again off to shepherd a group of grad students on a European tour. He is also very involved in the Great State of Texas interface with National Geographic which is eating heavily into his Hudsoning time. Thanks for tak‐ing time to once again share time with us. Russell Chilton: Bits and pieces of overheard and online viewing indicate the reassembly of his 1952 Hornet is pro‐gressing well. He plans to deliver the car to Indiana for upholstery at his brother Dennis’s upholstery shop. After showing the car at 2014 HET nationals, Russell plans to be a regular at our South Texas HET meets. Hopefully in a future issue we can chronicle his restoration activities. Ken Cates: Is busy disassembling his 54 Wasp parts car in preparation for it’s use as a donor car for his 54 SWH restoration. The next step is to pull the front end on the Hollywood as a unit to facilitate the needed frame repairs

It is very important for a club with such a large coverage area to support all our South Texas HET members, who are spread out wide and far. As always please feel free to contact me with any issues as to the club and any ideas are very desirable for future meetings. Anyone interested in convoying to or from meetings contact me and we will see what we can work up. This might help to make the road trips in our old cars safer and put many of us to ease as to break downs, etc...Not to mention it would be just plain fun…R

Weather down here in South Texas gave us a fine day for our February meeting in Bastrop. Dry roads and no need of a heater at all. Our chapter members look forward to five more Hudson cars to soon be back on the roads of our Chapter area. Don Brown is in the final stages of his rebuild, Paul Thomas has just started the process of rebuilding his engine and Jerry Potter most likely will drive his 40 Hudson to our next meeting in Thorndale @ the Downtown café. Oh, and Mark Campbell has his Hornet coupe in his paint booth hoping to compete that task and drive it to the Sweet Hearts and Orphans meeting. Thanks goes out to Joe Clark for the February meeting location which gave us a good room to have a very inclusive meeting. Also, let me not forget to mention Joe has got his Jet engine and tranny completed and installed in his Jet making it five cars back on our South Texas roads soon! I find it amusing as Jay Leno is retiring from the tonight show; it appears he is using his Hudson to collect his property from his of‐fice and head home. Jay is a true car guy and an inspiration to all Hudson persons, Ha! There appears to be much interesting Hudson related news abounding across the country which only makes me pleased to have picked a Hudson as my old car driver. It just seems that as time marches forward Hudson’s will continue to be one of the American icons of the auto world. Considering how many has been used up due to its desirability for use on tracks and strips, cabs, cop cars and rum runners. It is kind of surprising the number of survivors still around. This fact might be one reason they continue to be restored; maintained as prized autos? We all know how difficult it is to part with our hard earned money to keep are cars up, knowing we are just care takers for the next generation. Personally and collectively, as time rolls on, that next care giver will be glad there is a Hudson club that promoted this endeavor. I want to thank all members for keeping me inspired to keep working on my Hudson and all of the good information they share with me every time we get together. Hope to see as many members as possible come March 1st.



BIG COUNTRY REGIONAL MEETNG—June 5-7 Ponca City Oklahoma

The meeting will be held at the Fairfield Inn located at 3405 North 14th (US77). Rooms have been blocked for this meet and will be held until May 15th. The Rate starts at $79.00 before taxes which includes breakfast. To make reservations at the Fairfield call 580-765-3000 and tell them you are with the HET CLUB. There is much to see in Ponca City including the Marland Mansion, Marlands first home, Pioneer Woman stature and Museum and the new Conoco Museum. Saturday morning we will caravan over to the Ponca City Airport for breakfast ($6) display our cars for a few hours and view the planes on display. Swap meet for parts will be all three days and maybe some games in the parking lot on Satur-day afternoon.

S&H priority mail is $6.00 if only one is ordered, S&H is still only $6.00 if both are ordered. Thermostat housing by pass seal off kit, complete with all parts needed, plus a new modern thermostat. With this kit you get 95 per cent of the water back through the radiator, not 70 per cent with the by pass opened. 1948 to 1956, all Hudson model six cylinder engines, no splasher, no Jets. Total cost is $99.00 and includes S&H Priority Mail. All year Hudson carburetors from 1932 to 1956 rebuilt, cost depends on year and model of Carter carburetor. Modern spin on oil filter kit, complete with all parts needed, including a modern filter, FRAM PH8A. Kit is $195.00 and includes S&H priority mail. This kit is made of aluminum and acts as a heat sink, which helps cool the oil 10 degrees. If you have Twin‐H set up, you need a UNI‐SYN tool to correctly set the carbs up. Tech Tips: Mark Brians

This time I have a few smaller tips. I went to take a tail light lens off and found that one screw was striped out and was held in by dum‐dum putty no less. The original screw was a 8‐32 fillister Phillips head. I taped the hole out to a 10‐32 screw ok but a 10‐32 fillister head screw is too big to go into the recess of the plastic lens and to tall also. These plastic lenses will crack if you try to do anything but ream the hole. What I did was take a 10‐32 stainless screw the right length that had a flat Phillips head that was way to big and make into a fillister head small enough to fit the lens. I carefully chucked it into a drill and spun it against a electric grinder wheel slowly reducing its size and making it sides flat until it fit the lens. Because it was not to tall to start with it fit into the lens perfectly and looks the same as the other screw. I went on E‐bay motors looking for replacement bulbs for car instrument lamps. I found that there is a very wide array of LED bulbs out there that I have not seen at any auto parts to replace incandescent bulbs. I have found some bulbs that fit the small two pin sockets like a 53 bulb that have a LED with a focusing lens that are super bright and have no heat and use very little power. I found they are perfect for turn indicators and high beam indicators on our old cars that have very small dots or arrows. They appear to be three times as bright as the old bulb which sure helps to see them. They are 12 volts negative ground. They will work on 6 volts but not the 6 volts positive ground. I am still looking at other bulbs and will look at them in future tech tips. Keep those old cars driving. ————————————————————————————————————————————————————— Hudson Stepdown Radiator caps The cap for Hudson Stepdown radiators are ALL 7 pound pressure. They also MUST have correct length to fit the radiator neck otherwise the rubber seal fails to create proper seal or/and will interfere with overflow hole in neck. The AC number for Hudson is: RC#1 which is a 7 pound cap.
