Happy April, Happy Spring, Happy Easter. Can you tell I am happy? The weather is finally turning warm and sunny. My daffodils and Bradford pear tree are in full bloom and me and the kids have spring fever. Spring break just wasn't enough, was it? This last downhill slide to summer always feels so long for kids and I know they are getting antsy to be spending time doing anything but school! They won't have time to get bored or stressed out about the TAKS tests, with all of the fun activities happening around town in April and May.

There always seems to be a couple of months in the DFW area that are just chock-full of family-friendly events and April is one of them, so check out our calendar carefully as we have them all listed. Not only is it a beautiful time of year to visit the Dallas Arboretum, the Dallas or Ft. Worth Zoos or your favorite local park, there are some great expos coming up, too. Our favorite of course is our very own North Texas Kids Summer Fun Fest on Saturday, April 24 at Plano West Senior High, benefiting the Plano West Theatre Department. This is a free event! We are going to have loads of vendors with information on fun summer camps, activities and some great shopping. So stop by between 10am and 2pm for a rockin' good time! See the ad on the back cover or visit us online at www.northtexaskids.com/expo for details. When you are done, head to Addison for the Ultimate Exchange event, check out their article on pg.?? If you love to shop and love a good deal, this is the place to be.

If you love art, head to the Dallas Museum of Art this month for: Sor Juana Family Celebration: A Celebration of

Women in the Arts on Sunday, April 11, 11:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m, Free. Enjoy a wide variety of culturally themed arts activities for all ages including a family film, a theater performance of Sor Juana for families by Frida Espinosa Müller, a Collection Connection featuring the ancient Maya work Lady Bolon K’an, sketching in the galleries, and films from the Dallas Film Society’s 2010 DALLAS International Film Festival. A special guest performance by Mariachi Rosas Divinas, the first female mariachi group, will be a highlight of the event. Visit them online for more information about this and other family-focused programs: www.dallasmuseumofart.org

Then, the first weekend in May, save the date for the Dallas Kids Expo. Our good friend Ebony Smith is the talent behind this awesome show. It will be at Dallas Market Hall on Sat. May 1 and Sun. May 2. North Texas Kids will be there with some fun crafts and activities, so come and visit us! Visit their website for all the details: www.dallaskidsexpo.com.

March and April have been eventful for me personally, too. Those of you who have been reading the magazine or our blog know that for the past several months, my husband and I have been working to get healthy, from the inside out. While our coaching sessions with Jenny Bair, our inner organizer and co-founder of Living Well Dallas, have been phenomenal, our weight loss has not been so great. This has nothing to do with Betty Murray, CN, HHC, RYT , our nutritionist and other co-founder of Living Well. She has been patiently working with us to figure out what is going on, tweaking our food and exercise plans and being supportive when we get frustrated at

ourselves. The biggest news for me was to find out that I have some crazy food allergies that are making me feel yucky and making it impossible to lose weight. I have just joined the millions of other folks out there who are now following a 100% gluten-free diet. Read my article on pg.3 for all the details of this new challenge. If what you are eating is not making you feel good and no matter what you do you can't lose weight, I encourage you to go see Betty and take an allergy test. It is very affordable and is certainly one piece of my own weight loss puzzle that I wish I had figured out sooner. It is never too late to get healthy!

If you are looking for something fun, free and healthy to do (besides taking a bike ride around White Rock Lake,) go visit the new Whole Foods Market at the Park Lane Shops in Dallas. See my article on pg.14 for why this is a fun place to hang out. Remember that April is also Earth Day month and there are tons of local community events, big and small, that will celebrate this important day. Earth Day falls on April 22 this year, but watch the weekends before and after for many of the events.

I hope you enjoy a beautiful and fruitful spring season. Spend a few minutes with your kids, outside, celebrating and rejoicing in this time of rebirth and renewal. Every culture throughout time has celebrated this important time of year, so no matter how you give thanks this month, enjoy it!

Spring is upon us and that means it’s time to get organized. Do not let the idea overwhelm you. Spending small segments of time each day on getting organized will get you far and without the headache. Here are a few favorite tips to help you this year during your spring cleaning and it gets the kids involved too!

One Drawer a Day - Pick one drawer a day to purge through and organize. Only spend about 20 minutes completing this task. Just by spending a little time each day going through the hidden clutter, you will be surprised how much more organized you become by the end of the month. In the kitchen pick the utility drawer and purge unwanted, chipped, or stained spoons and spatulas. In the laundry room, choose a junk drawer or battery drawer. In the master bathroom, choose the cosmetic drawer and purge unwanted foundation, old mascara and eye shadow colors you no longer use.

Digital Declutter - Block out an entire day to spend going through all of your digital photos. Organize them by child and age, vacations with the date, holidays by year, etc. Delete any pictures you do not want to keep. Once you have completed this task, be sure to back up your pictures to a disk and keep in a secure place. Finding pictures to send to family and friends will now be a much easier task in the future.

Artwork Collection - Each school year, kids bring home numerous amounts of artwork. Do you really need to keep all of it? The answer is no. Art portfolios are a great way to archive and share the artwork your child has done over the year. Get the kids involved by having them choose their favorite ones to add to the portfolio and get rid of the rest. Each child should have their own portfolio labeled with their name and the school year. This will eliminate the boxes taking up your garage or attic space.

Magazine Overload - Purge through all of the unwanted magazines. Go into each room of the house and throw away any magazines that have not been read in over a month. If you haven’t read it but it is still 3 months old, get rid of it anyway. A great idea to recycle the old magazines you have already finished reading, donate them to your hair or nail salon. Limit yourself and each family member to only 2 magazine subscriptions per year. Cut costs and save paper!

Kids Take Control - In each of the children’s closet, place a purge bin/bag. Teach them to decide which clothing they want/need to keep and which to either donate or put aside to sell. Not only will this be a great way to get them involved in the process of organizing, but it teaches them accountability.

Organizing your home can be self satisfying and very rewarding once it is all said and done. You will be enjoying your summer less stressed and clutter free.

Kids in the kitchen

I'm Lisa Greene! As a Real North Texas Mom of a child with food allergies, I've become a natural, healthy-eating, whiz in the kitchen with lots of input from my kids. I am always experimenting with chemical-free, real foods to find recipes for my family. I'd like to share with you some quick-fix, easy ways to get back to cooking from scratch with real, unprocessed ingredients. It's easy to make satisfying snacks the kids will love that don't come from a can or a box.

Some of my kid's favorites:

Healthy Chocolate ShakeIngredients:2 frozen bananas6 oz milk, any kind2 tsp. unsweetened cocoa

Instructions:Cut peel off the frozen bananaPut all ingredients in a blenderBlend until smoothEnjoy!

A great way to get protein and the antioxidant power of chocolate! The kids won't even miss the ice cream.

Cherry Oatmeal Protein BarIngredients:2 ½ cups oats2 tbs. butter1 cup applesauce2 egg whites1 cup maple syrup½ cup honey½ cup protein powder (ex: soy or whey protein)2 tbs. ground flax seeds (optional)2 cups frozen cherries, thawed, drained, chopped

Instructions:Mix all ingredients and spread into a greased 9x12 panCook at 350 degrees for 40 minutes

As a variation, add nuts or use different kinds of fruit. These make great on-the-go breakfasts and snacks.

As a Mom on a mission to eliminate processed foods, I wrote a book called Processed Kids compiling my personal journey, expert advice, and many more recipes that I look forward to sharing with you each month. I love meeting and connecting with other moms and groups on a mission and would love to come speak and share at your next meeting. Go to www.processedkids.com for more information, to purchase my book, or to share your recipes with me!

Looking for a fun way to participate in the observance of Earth Day? Put Shopping at The Ultimate Exchange on your calendar… April 22nd – 25th. This 4-day, semi-annual shopping event is an eco-friendly, economically savvy fashion experience you won’t want to miss.

Founded in 2009 by two Texas native Moms and long time friends, Tonya Martin and Michelle Fraser. “We have enjoyed working together over the years in various charitable endeavors but our newest venture with The Ultimate Exchange has leads us into the wonderful world of fashion as

well as benefiting women in very real and immediate ways.” says Michelle. While keeping with the spirit of their charitable roots, The Ultimate Exchange

is focused on giving back to the community and providing ways to help other women. Their upcoming shopping event benefits three organizations dedicated to helping women in need or assisting them in self-sufficiency and success in life… Dress for Success, The Fashionistas and Genesis Women’s Shelter. You can learn more about these worthy organizations at The Ultimate Exchange website – www.theultimateexchange.com

“In creating The Ultimate Exchange, we are proud to be part of the Green Business Movement. Our concept offers smart and savvy women designer labels at real and affordable prices. It also provides a forum for wholesalers and women wanting to recoup cash for their fashion investment.” says Tonya Martin “We chose a shopping event platform over the traditional retail store front to provide our consignors a quick return. Consignors can either pick up their pieces or donate them after the event and checks are mailed within two weeks... it’s the Ultimate in Recycling”.

Who is The Ultimate Exchange Shopping Event for? Every woman looking for great pieces at amazing prices. Grab your favorite girlfriend for a little fashion bonding or make it a Girls Night Out. You’ll find everything from rockin’ jeans to stunning gowns. With designers from Armani to Valentino and everything in between. Just imagine… Guiltless Gucci! and Priced Right Prada! At the event you will find gently worn pieces, samples and wholesale clothing, shoes and handbags. A few featured wholesalers who will have a wide arrange at the event are Coach handbags and True Religion jeans. You might even find originals worn by some of Dallas’ well known celebrities.

“We have a great, easy to use online tagging system for our consignors – so we can see each piece as it is being registered for the sale. It’s hard not to start shopping before the event begins!” Michelle admits. And who wouldn’t have a hard time resisting a BCBG runway dress (apx. retail $600.00) for $69.00 or Gucci sandals (apx. retail $250.00) for $49.00. “We do a thorough inspection of every piece that is brought to the sale”, says Tonya, “if it’s less than like new or not something that you would just love to borrow from a friends closet, we do not accept it.”

“We are excited about our upcoming event and all the women in the metroplex it will benefit.” comments Tonya, “Come early… there will be What’s Haute bags given to the 1st 500 shoppers.” Tickets can be purchased online. Day Shopping Passes are available for Friday, Saturday or Sunday at $5.00. But you will want to get a 4-day shopping pass for ALL access: including Thursday evenings exclusive pre-sale, Friday, Saturday and ½ price Sunday - $10.00.(a portion of the procedes benefitting TUE’s Charity Partners).

What am I supposedto eat for breakfast?

If you have been reading the North Texas Kids blog and magazine since January, you will have found a few reports about my husband’s and my journey back to health, both physical and emotional. If not, here is a quick update. Jenny Bair and Betty Murray, CN, HHC, RYT are the co-founders of Living Well Dallas, a holistic collective of alternative, medical and therapeutic practitioners helping people to feel better. That’s a very brief description of what they do but I think their concept and their practice is amazing.

Brad and I had reached a point in our lives where nothing seemed to be working, weight kept going up, not down. Our priorities were skewed and we found ourselves putting work before our relationship with each other and our children. We felt buried under life and it’s accompanying paperwork around the house.

So we reached out to Jenny and Betty for help and it has been an amazing journey of growth, discovery, laughter and tears, not to mention sore muscles from restarting our fitness programs. In this month's article, I want to talk about Betty Murray, CN, HHC, RYT. Betty is a nutritionist and holistic health counselor. If you read her bio online, you learn that she is committed to seeing each person as a unique individual and creating a health/eating plan unique to you. We are not all the same and not every plan works for everybody. Trust me, over the years I have tried them all. Since high school, I have been a yo-yo dieter, losing and regaining and losing the same 50 pounds. As I have gotten older it has gotten harder to lose the weight or to find the energy and focus to follow a plan for any length of time. I am too busy, too tired, too stressed, don’t care enough, you know the drill, too many excuses.

I have been working with Betty since January and not seeing a lot of success. I have been mostly faithful to the plan and made significant changes to how and what I eat. You can imagine my frustration two months later at my lack of weight loss (now granted, I totally accept responsibility for this and don’t blame Betty.) Every time I would go visit her, she would tweak my diet and exercise plan, ask me for an accounting of what I had been doing and eating and help me find the small moments to celebrate. God bless her for that or I would have quit.

I knew I was allergic to wheat but had never been formally tested and I knew that certain foods I was eating were not making me feel good. So Betty encouraged me to take a blood test to check for 93 different and common food allergies, hence the title of this article, what in the hell am I supposed to eat? Pardon my cursing, but that is exactly how I felt when I met with Betty and saw the results of the blood test.

Not only did I discover that I am severely allergic, not just to wheat but all gluten, which is in EVERYTHING, but I am allergic to almost everything I was eating. (At which point Betty said, this is why I like to do this testing FIRST, so that I can really help you make a difference. I had resisted taking the test, my loss!) Okay, are you ready, here is the crazy list of foods that I have to completely eliminate from diet for 12 weeks. All gluten products (so anything with wheat, rye, barley, any kind of flour, all bread, crackers, bagels, most sauces and even salad dressings, canned soups and sausage have gluten in them. Did I mention I love to eat out and it just got really hard?) Being wheat-sensitive is very different than having to live a gluten-free life. There are tons of websites full of information that I am still wading through with a sense of overwhelm and information overload.

But the gluten was just the beginning. I am also allergic to almonds, avocado (I cried about this one,) peanuts, mustard, chicken, pork, salmon, sole, eggs (both yolks and whites) and the only HOORAY on the list: lima beans, who cares. But every single one of those other foods were ones I was eating a lot of.

So back to the question of what to eat for breakfast. Yesterday I had ground turkey and an apple. No more scrambled eggs and bacon! Basically, no more breakfast foods and I love BREAKFAST! Especially at Cafe Brazil, awesome vegie migas. I have to say goodbye to them for a while.

So what happens if I eat any of these foods? I have achey joints, my whole body feels tender to the touch, my small intestine gets clogged and crampy, you don’t need all the gorey details, just suffice it to say that I don’t feel good. I don’t have my normal energy and enthusiasm.

I am ready for something different and it will be interesting to see what that looks like. So if you made it al the way to the end of this article, I would love to hear from anyone else who is suffering from food allergies and how you have managed happy eating, both at home and in restaurants. You can email me at [email protected].

And remember, there is a health/wellness program that is perfect for you. I chose Living Well Dallas because they see each person as unique and create the program that will work for you, not some cookie cutter version that some super star says is sure to work for everyone. The Nick Gonzales Foundation

What inspired you to launch The Nick Gonzales Foundation 3 years ago? When Nick was first diagnosed with a GBM, the deadliest of the brain tumors, I was heartbroken and upset that none of us in the family knew or recognized the early warning signs of a brain tumor and missed the chance at early detection months earlier. He had dismissed his headaches as stress, sinus, eye strain, grinding his teeth at night. Being so healthy all his life, you never expect a diagnosis like this when there is no family history of a brain tumor or brain cancer. Had we only known that brain tumors are the second leading cause of cancer death in young men under 40, his wife or I would have taken Nick to a doctor immediately. When I lost him just one year later, I declared WAR on brain tumors and felt compelled to do something positive in his memory, educate others to recognize the early signs to give their loved ones a fighting chance at survival and fund critical research.

Why are you so passionate about funding research for brain cancer? Dr. Howard Fine of the National Institutes of Health, who had been studying brain tumors for 20+ years, stated in a Webinar 2 years ago, that “great strides have been made in the last two years and I am confident there is a light at the end of the tunnel”. Researchers at UT Southwestern, UT MD Anderson, Duke University, Columbia University, Memorial Sloan Kettering, City of Hope and other top notch labs, are identifying specific genes that mutate and create these nasty brain tumors, as well as multiple avenues to stopping their growth and preventing reoccurrences. They are closer than they’ve ever been, to giving long lasting hope to patients and their families, and increasing the survival rate while maintaining the quality of life. But innovative research takes money and with government cutbacks on research funding overall, we can’t take the chance of any delay in finding better treatment options and a cure. Brain tumors affect all ages, from children through elderly adults.

How has working on this foundation helped you deal with your own grief? I will always have the pain in my heart from losing my son. But knowing that I am helping others recognize the early warning signs through increased awareness and funding specific research projects focusing on brain tumor/cancer, has given me hope that others will be saved and that the “magic bullet” will be discovered. I have met so many terrific people through our fundraising events – survivors, families who have lost a loved one, doctors, new friends and businesses that have donated items for our silent and live auctions, National Brain Tumor Society staff, volunteers and supporters from all walks of life whose hearts were touched by what we were doing – all of whom I have such deep respect and love for and who I call my FRIENDS.

Nothing that we’ve accomplished would have been possible without the help and support of so many people. The Foundation is keeping “Dad” alive in the minds of his two sons, my grandchildren, and helping them to realize that tragedies will happen, but if you can help others with what you’ve learned, you can make a difference in someone else’s life.

Tell me about your upcoming Golf Tournament and how people can get involved: The 3rd Annual Nick Gonzales Charity Golf Tournament will be held Friday afternoon, May 7th at Bridlewood Golf Club in Flower Mound, with a shotgun start, four-man scramble at 1:30. Registration fees for golf are $135 and include round of golf, upscale buffet with a prime rib station, 2 for 1 certificate for future round of golf, raffle, silent and live auction. For those who don’t play golf, they can join us around 6:30 for Dinner Only at $50 a person and enjoy the fabulous food, raffle, silent and live auctions. Registration is live and online at www.nickgonzalesfoundation.org. We’re expecting a full house, so early registrations are encouraged. Sponsorship opportunities are available as well as donations of items/services/gift packages to add to our silent and live auction. We already have some great Dallas Cowboy items, hotel packages and more that have come in, but will be thrilled with additional contributions of items or cash. People can also make a donation in memory of someone throughout the year if they cannot attend the event. We also have an ongoing recycling program with used fax/printer/toner cartridges, cell phones, PDAs, digital cameras, laptops and more with several businesses in the DFW area and would love to add more partners to our program. Recycling saves the environment and helps our program at the same time. Questions/ideas – please call Cindy Villarreal, Nick’s Mom, at 469-438-7001.

Earth Day Fun FactsApril 22, 2010 marks the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day.

Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to watch a TV for three hours - it’s equivalent to half a gallon of gasoline.

Earth Day is a relatively new holiday and was first celebrated on April 22 in 1970. More than 20 million Americans participated in this first Earth Day celebration

More than 20,000,000 Hershey’s Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square milesof tinfoil. All that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it.

Never underestimate the importance of recycling: if every newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year. Unfortunately only 27% of all American newspapers are recycled. Please recycle this issue of North Texas Kids.

Brain-Boosting Benefits Your Child Will GainLearning Spanish this Summer

How much will your child earn during his or her lifetime? What kind of career will he or she carve out? Will he or she be a winner or loser in life’s serious competition for money, position, and self-respect? The answers to these questions depend overwhelmingly on what you do now ---- starting this summer ---- for your child. It might surprise you to know that teaching your child ---- especially at their age --a second language directly impacts this and more! Sure, you want and hope for the best for your child, but maybe you think the idea of your child learning a second language seems unrealistic. Most parents feel this way at first.

Learning a Second LanguageUnleashes Your Child’s

Untapped Potential Parents are shocked when they discover children have the ability to learn up to 5 languages ---- without confusion. How? Because the key to developing these language skills are the neural pathway connections in your child’s brain. A study by prominent linguistics professor Dr. Susan Curtiss of UCLA shows 90% of your child’s brain is complete by 5 years old. Parents are further amazed when they discover the astonishing talents their child gains from learning a second language. According to Researcher Dr. Ellen Bialystok of York University, children who have received instruction in two languages score twice as high on language tests in comparison to their monolingual peers. Because of this education, these same children were able to read earlier and demonstrate advanced problem-solving capabilities. But – it’s not just the novelty of giving your child the ability to speak a second language we’re talking about here. It’s more than that. Because when your child is able to speak a second language, it instantly gives them a leg up on his or her competition. In fact, there are at least 7 advantages your child stands to gain ---- advantages every parent wishes for their child.

7 Breakthrough Advantages Your Child Gains Over Their Peers

By Learning a Second Language

Here’s What You Do Next

in life have better literacy skills. And they obtain advanced reading and comprehension skills. 2) Increases IQ up to 12 points: Clinical studies show this is an undeniable fact! Because early learning of a second languages boosts brainpower ---- it makes your child smarter by increasing their cognitive development.3) Score 200% Better on Test: Statistics show children who learn a second language score twice as high as compared to their peers on exams. This benefits them their entire life.4) Achieve Higher SAT Scores: Wouldn’t you like to see your child enter a good college? The SAT College Entrance Exam Board reported this in 2008. They documented how students who have at least four years of second language studies outperform students who did not. 5) Excels in Math & English: Linguistics studies show children who’ve learned a second language on average score 23 points to 34 points higher than their peers.6) Increases Language Retention & Vocabulary: The sooner your child starts learning a second language, the more apt he or she is to retain that language. And they will have an easier time expanding their vocabulary. 7) Better Opportunities for Financial & Career Success: Because of the academic advantages attained, your child will get into any college they choose. And excel in their career of choice. Plus, according to economic trends more jobs will require Spanish-speaking skills – those without a secondary language lose out.

Don’t you feel it would be a shame for your child to miss out on these advantages? Now you can position your child for success ---- it starts by introducing Spanish as a second language to your child for the Summer of 2010. This Summer you will have the opportunity to give your child these benefit and more. Private school, Brilliance Academy is on a mission to prepare children’s brain development ---- wiring them for a lifetime of language education. Because of this critical void in education and lack of awareness in our community ---- Brilliance Academy is allowing the opportunity for students 18 months to 10 years-old to join them for their Summer exploration called: The Spanish Experience. The Spanish Experience is an 11 week cultural journey where your child will acquire language skills through musical, visual, interactive and verbal exchange. Unfortunately, many parents are unaware of the positive meta-cognitive developments their child

Located at the Park Lane Shops at I75 and Park Lane, the newest Whole Foods Market is a destination location for families. Heidi, the NTK business manager, and I had the privilege of taking a sneak peek prior to the store opening. Karen Lukin, who handles Dallas

Media and Community Relations for Whole Foods, was a gracious and enlightening tour guide who was passionate about some of the exciting new features at this 62,000 square foot flagship store. From the design and layout to the emphasis on high-quality local products, there was a lot to see.

Even if you don't love to cook and you prefer someone else to do it for you, you will love the new Whole Foods market and here is why:

1. Karen called it "segmentation," I call it Mommy's time saver. The foods are beautifully and logically organized so that everything is easier to find. For example, in the baby/toddler food aisle, they have added a small freezer with a selection of age-appropriate foods for the discerning mom. They have a 40-foot aisle of gluten-free products so that you don't have to hunt them down in every aisle. The wine and cheese are side by side, which leads me to the #2 reason to visit WF.

2. They have a wine bar on site, with 1,000 labels of wine! This store is so diverse and architecturally pleasing to the eye, you wouldn't mind going on a date night with your hubby or meeting a girlfriend for a girl's night out. They have wine, cheese and other snacks with a few barstools and cocktail tables to entice you to linger at the Wine Bar along with indoor and outdoor seating at the front of the store. Second, you can order a glass of wine and go do your grocery shopping with your wine. Forget the coffee bar! Finally, I loved Karen's idea: let their Concierge do your shopping for you while you enjoy the wine bar.

3. The Cart-o-later is a must-see for all kids (and their machine-loving adults). What is it, you ask? This Whole Foods Market is built above the other Park Lane shops and there is a parking garage below. Heidi and I immediately thought, how do you get your groceries to your car? Karen got very excited about this fun and practical piece of technology. There are two-sided escalators both inside and outside the store. One side carries people, the other your cart (without your kids, please!) You will have to see it yourself to believe it!

4. Cake decorating while you wait, personalized cupcakes filled with all kinds of goodies, and any other baked goods and chocolate delights you can dream of. If you love sweets, you will adore this bakery. Want a healthier choice? Check out the Frozen Yogurt bar, great flavors and fresh toppings to please any palate. Make sure to pick up dinner at the hot foods bar, fresh barbecue or deli sections while you wait for the cake. It smells amazing in this place!

5. For those of you who are serious about your health and cleaning up your diet, this Whole Foods has a full Raw Foods Bar, fresh juice and smoothie bar, and so many delicious choices, it makes it easy to follow a raw foods or vegan diet. And it's right up front, not hidden in the back of the store.

For Dad: For those beer-loving dads who don't really care about grocery shopping, you could spend your entire visit roaming the 64-foot long wall of refrigerated beer (600 varieties). And did I mention they have free wi-fi, so you can always hang out on the patio with your computer or smart-phone and avoid the crowds in the beer aisle.

I didn't even mention all of the amazing kids' products, vitamins and hidden little play areas around the store. I will let you discover those on your own. Or you can schedule your own tour. Whole Foods offers tours to school groups, scout troops and mom's groups. My daughter's Brownie troop did this in Plano and it was their favorite field trip of the year!

Harry Allard, one author of this month’s book, grew up in California and, over the course of his life, served in Korea and became fluent in French. He met the other author (and illustrator), James Marshall, in Boston, and has collaborated frequently with him on children’s books. Mr. Marshall was born right here in Texas, and studied to play the viola and start a musical career. He too is bilingual, having taught Spanish to Catholic school students after graduation. These two unique minds together created the book I enjoyed.

This enchanting little book is one that my mother introduced to me, and I’ve been happy to read the story. It reminds me a lot of what students see when a substitute teacher comes to

class instead of their regular one. It’s really cute and original, with the funny touch I love in shorter books.

Miss Nelson is Missing opens with a very, very badly behaved class. Poor Miss Nelson tries her hardest to get them to settle down, but they won’t stop throwing spitballs, they will not be quiet during story time, and getting them to do class assignments—ha!

For Miss Nelson, this is the last straw. Something has to be done, immediately—her room is the worst in the whole school, for crying out loud!

The following day, Miss Nelson’s kids are excited to see that their teacher is nowhere to be found. That’s great, they think—more time to misbehave and not do their work. But their substitute, Miss Viola Swamp, is a

nightmare! She is cruel, and makes the children do ten times as much homework and classwork as nice Miss Nelson used to. They must sit still and be very quiet, and the worst part is - no story hour!

Desperate to get their teacher back, the kids go to the police. Detective McSmogg will surely find Miss Nelson if they explain that she’s missing, right?

In order to find out whether the kids and the detective really do find Miss Nelson and escape the clutches of the formidable Miss Swamp, you’ll have to find this book and dive in! I heartily recommend the sequel, Miss Nelson is Back, and another, Miss Nelson Has a Field Day.

My mom and I chose Bread Winners for dinner one night when my dad and brother went to a Mavericks’ game.

The atmosphere was very nice, kind of lofty with French doors to a patio. There were two very big mirrors on one wall and interesting lighting. It had a relaxing feel to it.

The kids’ menu had a lot to choose from including cheese or pepperoni pizza, mini-cheeseburgers, pasta with marinara or alfredo, grilled cheese sandwich, cheese quesadillas, macaroni and cheese, chicken tenders and buttermilk pan-fried chicken. I ordered the pasta alfredo. It was very good, but also rich and filling.

My mom was trying to decide between the pulled-pork tacos or the fish tacos. She picked the fish tacos which she always likes, but she loved

Bread Winners also has a bakery counter with brownies, scones, cookies, muffins, pies and more. There was also a case of beautiful cakes. I had a snicker doodle cookie. It was very good!

Everyone should try Bread Winners. We had a wonderful time at the Plano location at Lakeside Market (Preston and Spring Creek). They also have a Bread Winners in Uptown and Inwood Village, which both look very nice. Visit www.BreadwinnersCafe.com for more details.

Gaps in Math SkillsCan Indicate Trouble

April is Math Month and a good time to evaluate your child’s mathematical skills. In the upper grades, math can become frustrating to students and homework often becomes a source of anxiety. Many find that math is the most difficult to master of all the subjects. Parents can ease this frustration by providing help and positive feedback to their children during homework time.

Here area few simple steps to help students improve in math:

• Review, review, review.Review all homework and tests together. Correct and go over errors to

make sure your child has full understanding of a concept before moving on to new work.

• Be sure your child reads assigned chapters thoroughly.Quiz your child on his or her understanding of the vocabulary and ask

the child to review each mathematical step verbally.

• Help your child understand that math follows specific rules.Math is not weird. It’s logical and sensible. Ask your child to explain

how he or she understands the procedure necessary to solve a problem. Listen for flawed reasoning or incorrect procedures, and then identify correct procedures together.

• Make sure your child takes good notes in class.Remind your child when taking notes to neatly write down every step

and note areas of confusion. It also helps to have your child re-write all notes as part of the homework to clarify understanding.

• Above all, avoid doing the problem for your child.

Math concepts build on each other. It is important that your child understands each mathematical concept, how it fits into the process, and understands the processes and procedures. Understanding the concepts makes remembering the procedures much easier. Don’t let homework become the cause of strife within the home. If your child is struggling with math, seek professional help early. You may wish to retain the assistance of a math tutor who can instruct your child in a manner that is comfortable and encouraging. The Tutoring Programs that offer diagnostic testing will be able to pinpoint your child’s weak areas in math logic and procedures and create an individualized program that is designed to meet your child’s specific needs from the basics through calculus.

If your child is struggling in Math, address this issue as early as possible. Math is an integral part of their education and their life!

-“People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.”- Rogers Hornsby

The best part about writing for

North Texas Kids is that I am allowed to write about anything I want to (within reason) that’s related to kids and sports in the area. I spent a lot of time at the end of February kicking around ideas to write about for the April Sports Scoop.

Fresh off the Winter Olympics and the riveting show Team USA gave our country, I thought it might be time for a hockey article. We have a lot women readers so a nice story on a local ice skater could have worked. A lot of kids in the area just finished up basketball and with March Madness happening and the Mavericks playing so well, a “Who is the future LeBron James of North Texas?” story would have been timely.

The weather was so cold, so wet and so depressing this winter that an article about an indoor sport related to winter seemed to make sense. But as the days of February stopped dragging their knuckles and gave way to March, the weather started warming up and I happened to catch a few high school baseball games in North Texas.

Maybe it was finally getting a chance to enjoy the sunshine and be outside. Maybe it was the thousands of sunflower seeds I ate that made my mouth feel like I had chewed on a brick the next morning. More likely, it was seeing a 15 year old kid hit a prodigious 400 foot home run, another kid smoke a triple to the gap punctuated with a Pete Rose-style head first slide and the relief pitcher

within me. If I delve deep into the cobwebs, I think I know why…playing catch was one of the first things my father and I did together and it symbolized all the shared positive experiences we had with the sport.

It wasn’t just that my dad played catch with me but he also helped coach some of the teams I played for as a kid. He introduced me to baseball cards, showed me what the standings meant in the newspaper and also taught me how to keep score. Starting when I was six years old we started going to games and ended up visiting several different major league parks together. When he was really sick, I brought him a baseball book filled with funny quotes. On the inside cover I wrote “It ain’t over till it’s over.” He gave me a wry look at first and it’s the last time I can remember him smiling.

One of the biggest highlights of my baseball life was going to Game 4 of the 2005 World Series between the Chicago White Sox and the Houston Astros. That was the night the White Sox won their first World Series championship in 88 years. Sitting directly in front of me were a couple of White Sox fans – a 60ish year old man with his 30-something son. After the last out was made and the White Sox won, the two men hugged each other for a long time and couldn’t stop crying. Not only did the White Sox win the World Series in their lifetimes but they got to see it happen together. I’m not one for too many public displays of affection, especially if it means holding another guy and weeping but I understood exactly what that moment meant and gave them both a pass.

Play ball!

Josh Hamilton and have since added Vlad Guerrero. You know, the past is the past and this might just be our time. I’m not saying, I’m just saying.

-“Baseball was made for kids, and grown-ups only mess it up.”- Bob Lemon

Throughout North Texas thousands of young boys and girls are getting ready to start their baseball or softball seasons. Some are getting their feet wet by playing t-ball while others are making the big jump from rec ball to select baseball. That also means hundreds of volunteer parents are going to be coaching or cheering their kids this spring. Somewhere along the way you’re going to see lots of “Daddy Ball.” You may also see the reverse of “Daddy Ball” where coaches have impossible expectations for their kids and are looking for any excuse to yell at or bench their own kid.

You will also see coaches in a game with ten year olds getting in each others faces and trying to intimidate 16 year old umpires making $20 a game into giving them a call. You’re going to see parents ripping on coaches because their kids aren’t hitting higher in the line-up or playing one of the prized middle infield positions.

I know these things are going to happen but my hopes are that parents check themselves and try not to kill any child’s love for the game.

-“Dad, you wanna have a catch?”- Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) to his dad in “Field of Dreams”

For whatever reason, I don’t cry

at movies but the first time I saw Kevin Costner ask his father to play catch with him in “Field of Dreams” I swallowed hard. It wasn’t full fledged waterworks but that simple scene struck an emotional chord

with the guts to throw a breaking ball on a full count to close a game out.

Whatever it was, I have fallen in love yet again with the Great Game. With all due respect to Team USA Hockey, Shaun White and LeBron James, you are all great at what you do but your sports are not nearly as fun to write about as baseball.

-“You look forward to it like

it’s your birthday party when you’re a kid. You think something wonderful is going to happen.”- Joe DiMaggio

Opening Day in baseball

symbolizes so many staples of the sport and life, namely hope and optimism. People who play or follow the game closely know that baseball is designed to break your heart (and it probably will) but on Opening Day everybody starts the season fresh and is in first place. After a few games, reality inevitably sets in and weaknesses are exposed but the optimism of Opening Day is intoxicating.

Nolan Ryan, the Team President of the Texas Rangers, told the fans this year that he thinks the Rangers can win 92 games and that he’ll be very disappointed if the Rangers don’t win the American League West. The jaded, cynical side of me that has closely followed the team for 35 years says “Yeah, right. Blah, blah, blah, you’re just trying to sell tickets, Nolan.

The seeds of my cynicism stem from all the optimism I had for Ranger teams the years after (1976, 1987 and 2005) they came out of nowhere to have good years only to follow up those seasons with losing records. The other side of me thinks the past is the past and sees a young team that won 87 games last year. I know young teams tend to get better. I also know we won that many games without a healthy
