SOUTH-NORTH-CENTRAL JERSEY MUSLIM NEWSLETTER

Sha’ban 1436 SPECIAL PRE-RAMADAN EDITION June 2015 WHEN IS THE FIRST DAY OF RAMADAN?

Please go out and try to sight the new moon on the eve of June 17th (Wed) and report to your local Masjid Shura/Trustee board. It is possible that majority of the Ummah this year can start the fasting the same day, if the new moon can be sighted on Wed June 17th eve, and will have the first Tarawih prayer on Wed evening. Please check with your local Masjid. There are few different methods used in determining the first day of Ramadan: 1. Actual Local or Global Moonsighting:

The Astronomical New Moon (conjunction) is on June 16, 2015 (Tuesday) at 14:05 UT. On June 16, it is almost impossible to see it anywhere. On June 17 evening, the moon can be seen easily in Africa, and all Americas (See visibility curves). Accordingly, the first day of Ramadan will be most probably

June 18, 2015 (Thursday) in North America.

The ICGT shura members depend on verified local moon sighting information from Islamic organizations and Masaajid within North/South America and Caribbean Islands. The Islamic month will be established only upon confirmed actual moonsighting within this region on the eve of June 17th. Those who follow this method include many Masaajid and organizations in Yardley, Ewing, Trenton, Mt. Holly, Lawrenceville, Burlington, TASMiNA and Baytul-Iman Academy. An announcement will be made as early as 1 hr after Maghrib (if sighted in the eastcoast) or as late as midnight (one hour after sunset in California). 2. According to Ummul Qura Calendar: The month starts if moon is born before sunset at Makkah, and moonset is after sunset. Accordingly, the first day of Ramadan will be June 18, 2015 (Thursday) 3. According to Fiqh Council & & ISNA: FCNA uses Makkah al-Mukarrama as a conventional point and

takes the position that the conjunction must take place

before sunset in Makkah and moon must set after sunset in

Makkah. Accordingly, the first day of Ramadan will be June

18, 2015 (Thursday).

Ramadan Moon Sighting differences amongst scholars in Islam by Sh Yasir Qadhi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhSjf7MX0w4 Moonsighting: https://youtu.be/r_6hD_uY2BI Regardless of the method you choose, Ramadan is a time to assess ourselves spiritually and where we stand in our relationship to God. Allah says in the Quran that this fasting is for us to learn God-consciousness and self-restraint (2:183). Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said that, "Whoever spends the month of Ramadan in complete faith and self-rectification, his previous sins will be forgiven." But in order for that to happen, there are things we need to do today, in these fast-flying days before the blessed month begins. The most important of these is freeing up our time. Time is the currency of life. It is more valuable than any monetary currency. And it can make or break our Ramadan - and our lives. Many Muslims wisely take this to heart. They freeze pre-prepared meals in advance to avoid too much cooking instead of worshiping; employees and bosses rearrange their work schedules to ensure that at least the last 10 days of Ramadan can be devoted to sincere and focused remembrance of God; budgets are drafted to maximize charitable giving, as well as fulfilling the obligation of Zakat in Ramadan, when good deeds are rewarded more highly. As well, some have chosen to completely forgo the time-honored tradition of Iftar parties. While we don’t necessarily think you need to drop this, it may be a good idea to reduce the number of such invitations. Regardless of what you choose, please plan today. And remember, this is the most important “me” time you can carve out at any time in the year. We all need a break, and Ramadan is that spiritual respite we must make time for to revive our souls, weary from monotony and living on autopilot. In some ways, it is like our own personal Cave Hira, where the Prophet used to meditate and reflect. And a life without reflection will only dull our souls, ending in great loss and even greater regret.

active group to support activities for the community.

They already had Halaqas with invited guest speakers

(sisters), and they had successful Clothing Drive in May.

Sisters collected good clothes and went to Trenton Masjid on

a Friday just before Jumma and displayed all the clothes. It

did not even take fifteen minutes, everything was gone.

Now before Ramadan, they collected Dry Food for their Food

Taraweeh The Ramadan nightly prayer has a special merit over other nights. Taraweeh is derived from the Arabic root word, raaha, which means to rest, relax and use as recreation. It is so called because the believers used to prolong it. After every four raka'ats they would stop for rest and relaxation and resume until taraweeh was complete. The Messenger of Allah (saas) was the first to establish the Sunnah of congregational, jamaa`ah prayer of taraweeh in the Masjid. Then he did not continue with the Sunnah for fear that it might be made mandatory on the Ummah in Ramadan, and they might not be able to do it. In the books of Bukhari and Muslim, 'Aishah (raa) has been reported as saying: "The Messenger of Allah (saas) observed Taraweeh prayer in the Masjid one night and people prayed with him. He repeated the following night and the number of participants grew. The companions congregated the third and fourth night, but the Messenger did not show up. In the morning he told them, "I saw what you did last night, but nothing prevented me from joining you except my fear that it might be made mandatory on you in Ramadan." This hadith is a clear indication that the Taraweeh in congregation was not an innovation of 'Umar, the second Khalifah, despite his saying to the contrary. For it has been related that: "Umar bin Al-Khattab attended the Masjid at night in Ramadan and saw people praying individually in every corner of the Masjid with a few in groups. He did not like the sight a bit. 'Umar said, `I thought it would be better to gather these under one Imam'. So, he combined them under 'Obayi bin Ka'ab and Tamimu Ad-Dari to alternate and lead the believers in eleven raka'ats of night prayer. The next day `Umar was in the Masjid which was full with Taraweeh prayers." In their desire to pray more raka'ats, some people make Taraweeh in extreme speed. That is wrong, especially when the speed leads to a breach of certain rules of prayer. In that case, the prayer will not be valid. Similarly, it is undesirable for an Imam to pray with such speed whereby the followers will have difficulty observing the necessary deeds in Salaat.

Sha’ban 1436 SPECIAL PRE-RAMADAN EDITION June 2015

HADITH ABOUT FASTING IN RAMADAN Salman Al-Farisi (R.) narrated that Prophet Muhammed سلّم و عليه الـلّه صلّى ) ) said the following in a Khutbah that he gave on the last day of Shaban, “A great month, a blessed month, a month containing a night which is better than a thousand months has approached you people. Allah has appointed the observance of fasting during it as an obligatory duty, and the passing of its night in prayer as a voluntary practice. If someone draws near to Allah during it with some good act, he will be like one who fulfills an obligatory duty in another month, and he who fulfills an obligatory duty in it will be like one who fulfills seventy obligatory duties in another month. It is the month of patience, and the reward of patience is paradise. It is the month of sharing with others, and a month in which the believer’s provision is increased. If someone gives one who has been fasting something with which to break his fast, it will provide forgiveness of his sins and save him from hell and he will have a reward equal to his without his reward being diminished in any respect.”

The Meaning of Ramadan Fasting during Ramadan was ordained during the second year of Hijrah. Ramadan is not only about skipping meals. While fasting is an integral and paramount part of it, Ramadan offers a comprehensive program for our spiritual overhaul. During Ramadan the believers get busy seeking Allah’s mercy, forgiveness, and protection from Hellfire. This is the month for renewing our commitment and re-establishing our relationship with our Creator. "All services of the son of Adam are for him except fasting. It is for Me, and I will reward him for it. Fasting is a shield. On the day you fast, do not use obscenity, nor yell at others, nor act ignorantly towards them. However, if anyone abuses you verbally or attempts to draw you to fight with him, say 'I am fasting' two times. The one who is fasting experiences 2 enjoyments: they are pleased when they break their fast, and they are pleased when they meet their Maker (Allah)" (Muslim)

Ramadan Sharing Initiative As the Month of Ramadan approaches would like to

encourage my family and Muslim friends take part in the

Ramadan Sharing Initiative. A month long initiative to help

spread peace, love and mercy by sharing food with our non-

Muslim friends, neighbors, co-workers and the greater

community. For example, one can share a plate of food, a

bowl of dates, a food basket or some cookies.

Giving and sharing is an act that all of us already do but would

like to encourage others to take action not only because of

the upcoming holy month but also due to the recent uprise of

Islamaphobia and much negativity towards our faith. It is a

good opportunity for us to outreach to help dispel many

misconceptions. Kindly requesting if you could also please

forward, share and invite others to this initiative to help

spread the word. Thank you. JazakAllah Khair.
