    Hello!

A very warm summer welcome to the second issue of

South Liverpool. The first issue got fantastic feedback,

so much so we extended distribution to the stands at

Moorfields and Parkway train stations and they were

    literally flying off the stands.

We have launched a new responsive version of the

website. Now you can enjoy the magazine on any

device and access the great editorial with the fully

    interactive responsive design,

Chrissy Adamou from Pink Flame is interviewing Sian

Welby the Channel 5 weather girl, so if you are not

hot already she should raise some temperatures! The

Whats On guide has details of South Liverpools most

colourful carnivals the Brazilica and Brouhaha which are

guaranteed to get us all moving and shaking through

    the streets.

Summer is also a great time for BBQs but if food

cooked by a wannabe chef in an advanced state of

lager induced inebriation is not your cup of tea, then

you can find some guilty pleasure food at Free State

    Kitchen.

Enjoy this second edition of South Liverpool and follow

us on facebook and really like us on twitter as we do

    have feelings,

    Thanks, Steve

    omen from all over

    Liverpool are known

    for their beauty and

    flawless grooming.

With rollers in their hair as the

    latest accessory trend perfect

    for our seasonal downpours

and damp days. Its all about

    the looking good syndrome

    whatever the weather,

    whatever the occasionor

not as the case may be.

    Do you have it?

    Its important to be both

    fashion conscious and well

    groomed if you are constantly

    pictured in magazines.

    Our ordinary scouse women

who are out doing the school

run day in day out, high

    powered business women,

    entrepreneurs, teachers and

    other professionals seem

to be following in the same

    footsteps more and more.

    On many different levels from

    the clothes they wear, the

    make-up, the hair styling and

    the nails!

    We are all beginning to

realise the impact of the way

we look has on our lives. How

    others see us influences us

but lets be true to ourselves

if we are happy in the skin we

are in and the clothes that

we wear then that should be

    good enough. Be proud, be

happy, do what you want to

do when it comes to fashion.

    Do you feel obsessed to

    look chic sailing through the

    supermarket or on your school

run? Or are you happy to

slip into your onesie and sail

    through your daily errands

with a relaxed dont give a

    toss attitude?

I know which I am and I am

    happy!

The sale of hard oors has

    increased over the past

few years; a lot of people,

    (those with young children

    with allergies) believe its a

    healthier, cleaner way to live.

    A study was carried out

    over 15 years in Sweden

    to investigate allergies and

    carpets. What this research

    found was when carpet

    usage in Sweden decreased

    by 70 percent, allergy

    reactions in the general

    population increased by 30

    percent.

    The reason for this? Well

carpets are like a giant lter

    for airborne allergens, what

falls to the carpet - such as

    allergens, common dust,

    and other pollutants tends

to cling onto the carpet until

    it is vacuumed up, unlike

    hard oors that allow these

    particles to re-circulate.

    Findings show that

    walking on hard surfaces

    disturbed more particles

    into the air. These particles

    then became airborne and

    enter the breathing zone

    (especially in children that

are lower to the ground). In

    contrast, carpeted surfaces

    trapped more particles so

    that walking disturbed fewer

    particles.

    Properly maintained

    carpets lead to improved air

    quality and a healthier indoor

    environment!

    So vacuum your carpets

    regularly as this simple

    procedure will improve

the quality of the air you

    breathe, then as carpet

    manufacturers recommend

    - have them professionally

    cleaned once a year.

    Dirtbusters carpet cleaners

    in Liverpool use natural

    cleaning products that are

    fully bio degradable. The

benet here is as well as

    being completely non toxic,

your carpet will be free of any

soaps and residue that can in

    turn attract dirt.

Are hard oors healthier than carpets?

    Large baguette

    4 cloves of garlic

    Margarine

    Rocksalt

Finely chop garlic, place in a bowl, add

in margarine and rocksalt. Mix into a paste

with a mortal and pestal if you have one,

otherwise on a chopping board with a

    large wide ended knife.

Cut baguette length ways and add the

paste with same knife across all of the

bread, wrap in foil and cook on BBQ for

    15 - 20 minutes until crispy.

    MARSHMELLOWS ON THE BARBIE

    Ingredients

    One big pack of marshmallows

    Two Large chocolate bars

    Cold milk

    Bamboo skewers (or sticks)

Add the cream and chocolates to a

    medium-to-small cast-iron pot and place

    the pot over medium heat.

As the pot heats up, the cream and

    chocolate will heat up together.

Stir continuously until you have smooth

    chocolate sauce.

Remove the pot from the fire. As the pot

is made from cast iron it will keep its heat

and the chocolate sauce will stay warm

    for a while.

Put marshmallows on skewers, dip them in

    the chocolate sauce and enjoy.

Monsters University is the much anticipated follow

up to Pixars Monster Inc. Pixar delivers with the

amazing animation, witty script and lovable

familiar characters but it doesnt exceed

    expectations. Theres no tear jerking

scene or memorable rib tickling lines,

this is no Despicable Me 2.

In the original Monsters Inc Mike and

Sulley are two lovable monsters who

live in a parallel universe linked to the

doors of kids bedrooms. When kids

    scream, monsters harvest the energy

to power their national grid. Humans

are poisonous to monsters - which is

why their daredevil jobs as scarers

    are so sought after.

In Monsters University Billy Crystal returns as Mike and

John Goodman returns as Sulley. They start off as sworn

enemies but learn how to work together to take part

in a scaring competition. How to work together is the

message of the film. Basically its a standard underdog

film. Theres some nice spoofing of rubbish horror films.

    VERDICT

This film will do for kids but parents may be tempted to

use the 3D glasses to have a sneaky nap!

    ages though they were horrible,

just incase I needed them for

fancy dress! I did manage to throw

them out recently though and it

    was a good feeling!

    How would you describe your

    relationship with fashion?

Im brave enough to try new

    things, but sensible enough to

know when Ive made an error! I

    wont buy something just because

everyone else is, I have to like it and

    be in the mood.

Deep down Im a bit of a tom

boy, so I feel best when Im in a

pair of jeans, ballet pumps and a

T shirt, but if Im going out in the

evening I love to get the pins out

and embrace short dresses and mini

skirts. Youll never see me without

a pair of 4 inch heels on when Im

out....I feel wrong without a pair of

    heels on in a bar!

If you could be any piece of clothing what

    would you be and why?

Ha! That sounds like a Blind Date

    question!!

Well Cilla, Id be that trusty pair

of black wedges. Im ready for

anything, I go with everything, I make

    you feel comfortable and confident

and your wardrobe wouldnt be the

    same without me!

Whats the first ever item of clothing you

    bought on your own/for yourself?

A pair of denim pedal pushers

from Tammy Girl! Hahaha! I thought I

    looked the bomb! *cringe*

What do you have in your wardrobe that

you just wont let go of?

Oh god Im awful! I find it very hard

to throw things away, even when

theyre falling apart. I held on to a

pair of bright pink spotty heels for

Get a compliment off a random guy about y

    Whos your fashion idol? Why?

Right now its gotta be Cara

    Delevigne. Ive always been

concious of my big, dark eyebrows

and blonde hair, but ever since she

    came along Ive fully embraced

it! She seems like a bit of a Tomboy

and if I had a stylist Id love to copy

some of her looks. That whole I look

amazing but didnt try is what we

all want to achieve and she just

    nails it.

How often do you buy new clothes?

Not often. Im a creative person,

so I have to be in the mood and

then when I am, I go out on a

mini mission and get a load of

new things all at once. I hate

    shopping with other people, unless

its just casual browsing. I like to

be efficient and quick and then I

    usually get some awesome outfits!

Sometimes I get a bit carried

away...Ive really got to stop buying

    shoes!

    Whats your favourite fashion accessory?

It has to be my new Daisy Knights

watch. I love a good watch and

this ones really rock and roll! I dont

really wear a lot of jewellery and I

live by the less is more motto, so for

me a decent watch is always an

    essential accessory!

    Would you let your partner/boyfriend

    choose an outfit for you?

    I would actually. From watching

shows like Dont tell the Bride Ive

    realised that sometimes we just

dont give guys the credit they

deserve and that some lads have

a great eye for fashion. However

this doesnt apply to all men, some

really do not have a clue! I imagine

a lot of blokes imagining what they

think will look good, but in reality

its more shell-suit than Chanel and

youd come out of the changing

room looking like a prostitute! Haha!

I think most of us girls dress for

other girls to appreciate. Get a

    compliment off a random guy

about your clothes and its nice, but

by a random girl and its amazing!

You feel like a true fashionista!!

Sloppy and comfy or dressed up and

    ready to party?

Im one of those people who can

    never really embrace being too

sloppy. I love being in my comfy

    clothes and jogging bottoms, but

I dont like looking rough! Even

if its just a bit of foundation and

some mascara I like to always look

presentable. Im so quick at getting

ready, even on big nights out, that

I would say im fairly low maintance

and because putting on a bit of

slap is as quick and as basic as

brushing my teeth, I always think, I

    can so I will.

ablets are fast becoming the device of choice for casual use at home

and are portable enough for work appointments. I regularly carry my

tablet to business appointments and would never consider a bulky

laptop now. The touch screen and ease of use on tablet devices are

particularly good for non technical users.

parents are both in their seventies and have recently bought a Kindle

Fire (strictly not a tablet I know) and despite being their first ever

Tablets are currently the pinnacle of mobile technology and with

their lightweight style and effortless touch screen usage it begs the

question of which device is going to suffer. The desktop PC will

always be in a league of its own as it is faster, more reliable and

can hold more data than a tablet can even dream of.

    s Liverpools reputation as an

    energetic, interesting and

    cultural city continues to

grow so to do the stature of many

of the events it plays host to. As

always, these events offer a diverse

range of things to do, meaning that

    no one is missing out.

    This summer, Liverpool holds a

number of exciting carnivals as the

whole city adopts the party spirit

and gets on its dancing shoes (or

    carnival headdresses).

    This includes Brazilica (12th-20th

July), who return with the UKs

    biggest Samba carnival. With over

20 events split over a week, and

culminating in a city centre carnival

    and night-time parade, Brazilica

    offers something for everyone and

aims to celebrate the culture of

    Brazil in style.

    Another citywide party takes place

just a week after Brazilica (arent

we spoilt!) as the much loved, and

    internationally famous, Brouhaha

(19th-28th July) takes place in its

    biggest and boldest format yet.

As the ten day festival spreads to

more parts of the city, even more

people will be able to see the vast

    array of musicians, dancers and

    circus performers from every corner

    of the world.

    However, the undoubted pinnacle

    of Brouhahas International Festival

    takes place on Saturday 27th

    July, with a jaw-dropping parade

through the city centre to Princes

Park, where they will be greeted by

an afternoon of culture, food and

live performances from all over the

    world.

For those of us wanting something a

little calmer, this summer is a great

year for art exhibitions in Liverpool.

    The two undoubted highlights are

Alive: In The Face Of Death, which

    sees world renowned photographer

Rankin show his unrivalled talents at

the Walker Art Gallery, and Chagall:

Modern Master, the Tates display of

works by one of the greatest artists

    of the last century.

The Brouhaha Carnival parade will lead to Princes Park with multicultural celebrations

featuring a family Circus Garden area with childrens workshops and a whole host of

diverse artistic performances. There will be international food stalls, Sound System Culture

    - an interactive installation exploring the development of reggae Sound Systems in the

North of England. Plus for those in a sporting mood, Liverpool street handball demos and the

world renowned and Liverpool-based Airborn Academy will be on show in collaboration

with contemporary urban dance company Soul City from the Reunion Islands in the Indian

    Ocean!

Lastly in collaboration with Milap we will host two Indian musicians Gaurav Mazumdar an

expert in Hindustani sitar music, tutored by the legendary Pandit Ravi Shankar and Kousic

Sen a versatile and popular percussionist who has performed alongside many leading

Indian Classical musicians and dancers as well as with ensembles performing a range

    world music fusion.

2013 sees the Brouhaha Intl Festival bring a Global Carnival for a Global City with local,

regional, national and international participation, making this years event once again one

of the main highlights of Liverpools cultural calendar.

Liverpool continues to be inuenced by the presence and wealth of its diverse communities

with 2013 costume designs built on our understanding of the World in One City realised

through new costume designs by our carnivals artistic Director Ray Mahabir.

Costume designs are based on the four continents of Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe

that when joined together create a Global Festival. Participating in our 2013 Carnival

will be costume sections from Liverpool, Sefton, Wirral and Halton as well as national

participation by carnival troupes from Preston, Hudderseld, and London. Also joining us

at this years festival and carnival will be international performing arts companies from

Germany, Martinique, the Netherlands, Hungary, Trinidad, Poland, Reunion Island, France,

    Turkey and Ireland.

The weather must be the most spoken about topic

    or this months article, Im

going to focus on running. I

have been running for over 15

    years, competing over various

distances from 3k to full marathon. I

have loved this sport since the age of

    14. Most people often hate running

at school, but it always surprises how

many take it up later in life. Running is

free, can be done anytime, anywhere,

    doesnt need equipment and doesnt

    rely on others.

    Regular participation will improve

fitness levels, manage or help you lose

    weight, improve bone strength and

balance or alleviate stress levels. South

Liverpool has a vibrant running scene,

    - Pace yourself, run as long as you can at a speed that is comfortable to you. There

is no shame in walking for a few mins, then trying again.

    - Build up your distance slowly, week by week, you might only start with 10-15mins,

    thats fine.

    - Wear appropriate clothing and footwear, ideally garments that will keep you cool

and wick sweat away and wear running specific trainers (running or sports shops

    are best).

    - Make sure you drink plenty of water before and after and eat long enough

before, so you dont get a stitch and again after to replenish energy stores.

    - Pick a 5km race out to work towards, then maybe 10km and half marathon.

ourmet takes on fast food classics

are all over the place down in

    that London nowadays, with

the likes of Bubble Dogs and Dirty Burger

doing a roaring trade and Byron finally

making its first strides outside of the

capital. The same, however, cannot be

    said for Liverpool.

    All this could be changing.

    Tucked away on one

    of the many side streets

    adjoining Hope Street

    sits the newly opened

    Free State Kitchen, a

    scouse shrine to all the

best of Americas greed and gluttony.

This attitude to food is summed up by the

    almighty Double Deluxe, a double-beef,

    double-cheese mountain of a burger,

and the enormous jar of serve-yourself

pickles in the middle of the table. Withpickles in the middle of the table. With

other mains including the Clam Sam

(battered clams and seafood on a white

roll) and the Scooch (cured deli meats

and cheese on a ciabatta roll), the Free

State Kitchen team prove that theyve

got this whole American lark pretty much

    cornered.

By this point, youll be far too full to even

contemplate dessert, but if you can

squeeze it in, the daily selection of cakes

and pies (including, if youre lucky, the

sinful Oreo cheesecake) and their ice

cream sundae of the day will make sure

youre looked after perfectly. In true

American style, theyre more than happy

to pack up leftovers for you to take home:

    youll need it.

    Despite all this

    deserved talk of

    their food, their

    undisputed hidden

    gem hasnt even

    been mentioned.

Sheltered behind the buildings of Hope

Street, and through Free State Kitchens

large glass doors stands their secret

garden. The garden, complete with a

large lawn, a patio and even a watchful

statue of Jesus (a relic from the spacesstatue of Jesus (a relic from the spaces

old incarnation as a convent), provides

a welcome break from city-living. There

are few restaurants with a garden of this

calibre and, if we get the summer were

all hoping for, few better places to enjoy

a burger and a nice, cold beer.
