History & Heritage•SourcessuggestthatMidhursthasbeeninhabitedforwellover2,000years,althoughthewell-preservedmarkettownhasnoRomanremainsandisnotmentionedintheDomesdayBook.•MidhurstdevelopedaroundStAnnsHill,wheretherewasanIronAgefort,aNormancastle,anda12thcenturyfortifiedhouse.•In1315,theBohunfamily,theowners,builtanewhouse(LeCoudreye),•Inthe16thcenturythiswasreplacedbyCowdrayHouse,hometotheMontagues,aleadingCatholicfamilyinthecourtsofHenryVIIIandElizabeth1.Thisbuildingwasdestroyedbyfirein1793,thesameyearthatthe8thViscountMontaguedrownedintheRhine.ThelastremainingMontaguesonswerealsodrownedin1815.TheRuinsaretheremainsofthatgrandTudorbuilding.•Midhursthasmorethan100listedbuildings.•TheGrammarSchoolwasfoundedin1672intheOldMarketHouseintheSquare,latermovedtoNorthStreet,andclosedin2008tobecomeMidhurstRotherCollege.
PopulationIn1621thepopulationwas400.Inthe2001censusitwasaround4,900,equalwithLiss.MidhurstandLisshavethethirdlargestpopulationintheSouthDownsafterLewes(16,000)andPetersfield(13,300).

Thenewpull-outleaflet–Caring For the South Downs National Park–includesinformationaboutRightsofWay,AccessLand,anddogwalking.ItisfreefromTouristInformationCentres,visitorattractionsandotherorganizationsacrosstheNationalPark.
“MakingsurethateveryonewholivesinandvisitstheNationalParkisfullyawareoftheCountrysideCodewillensurethatwecanallenjoytheSouthDownsandhelpprotectthem,”saidMargaretParen,Chair,SDNPA.
Theleaflet,whichfoldsintoacreditcardsizedplasticwallet,hasbeendevelopedwiththeSDNPA’senvironmentalandlandmanagementpartners–theCampaignfortheProtectionofRuralEngland(CPRE),theSouthDownsSociety(SDS)andtheSouthDownsLandManagementGroup(SDLMG).
IntheSouthDownsNationalParkgates,stilesandfarmanimalsareafactoflifeasmorethan85%ofthelandisfarmedland.Forresidentsandvisitors,knowingwhattodoorwhatsignsmeanmaynotbesecondnature.TheSouthDownsisaworking,livingenvironment,withalargepopulation.Itisfarmedandwoodedland,witharangeofhabitatsandwildlife,wherebirdsnest,animalsgrazeandarebredforfood.
Thetipsaimtohelppeople“improvepersonalenjoymentandsafety”whiletheyare“adheringtobasiccodesofbehavioursetoutfortheprotectionofthelandscape,animalsandhabitatsoftheNationalPark.”OneofthetwopurposesoftheSDNPAistopromoteunderstandingandenjoymentoftheNationalPark’sspecialqualities.Partofthisresponsibilityispromotinganunderstandingofwhosharesthelandscapeandwhatmeasuresareinplacetoprotectit.
