The tough early season schedule provided just the right charge to become a better team. Coach Cabana says, “We were a completely different team at the end of the season. We lost five of our top six from last year, so there were some rookie nerves at the beginning. As soon as the girls felt comfortable with the new unit, they were able to relax and focus on tennis. I would say we improved by an impressive margin.” Coach Cabana talks more about the players on the team, “The top four players were Ashley Verhein (Sr.), Maddie Wise (Fr.) (Maddie played in the first three matches and then was out with an injury for eight weeks), Rachel Tomchin (Fr.), Grace Deer- ing (Fr.) Also Ellie Bolton (Jr.), one of the top six, was unable to play the final six weeks of the season because of an injury. Blaire Cunnane (Sr.) was impressive, as was Bailey Thomas (Fr.) and Bailey Hughes (Sr.) all play- ing in and out of the top six. Paige Ernest (Sr.) had an impressive record in doubles with partner, Megan Ariz- mendi (So.). Caroline Smith (So.) was used in singles and doubles and played some tough matches at the top of the lineup.” “Christine Kessel (So.) also made a good doubles partner with Megan Arizmendi. Keep in mind we were without two or our top six players for almost six weeks. Maddie Wise came back before playoffs, but Ellie Bolton ended her season in a cast--she went out about one month in and never re- turned to play.” The state title was number nine for Charlotte Catholic Ladies Tennis. The Cougars have captured gold in five of the last eight years. Amazingly the team lost five players from last years state championship team. The title was also the third for senior Ashley Verhein. A long and successful soccer ca-reer opened up a new door for Cuth-berston High School senior Adam Lutz. HELPING OTHERS One of the biggest positives that I see in our youth sporting community is the willingness to help others. So many times, we see youth teams add a charity element to their season. Whether they raise $100 or $1,000, it’s a huge posi-tive for both the kids and the organization that receives the funds. I hate to single out just one, but I need to give recognition to On Deck Base-ball for their annual golf outing on Veterans Day and its donation to the USO. United Service Organizations Inc. (USO) is a private, nonprofit organization that provides morale and recreational services to members of the U.S. mili-tary, with programs in 140 centers worldwide. Since 1941, it has worked in partnership with the Department of Defense (DOD) and has provided support and entertainment to U.S. armed forces, relying heavily on private contribu-tions and on funds, goods, and services from DOD. Prior to the golfers teeing off, the Ardrey Kell High School Marine ROTC program presented our nations colors, the National Anthem was offered and a moment of silence was held to honor all veterans. Every veteran in attendance was also recognized and thanked for their service. Kudos to On Deck Baseball for recognizing the im-portance of the USO and giving their time to raise money for this great cause.

GREAT JOB BRETT AND LOGAN I also want to salute two of our special friends, Logan Ratledge and Brett Lang for signing their NCAA National Letters of Intent forms to play baseball at NC State and UNC Charlotte. Logan and Brett have become very good friends of ours and they have taken the time to create special friendships with my 7 year old Tyler. I can’t tell you how important it has been for Tyler to have these two baseball players to look up to over the last couple of years. Tyler has been very lucky to have gotten to know many high school athletes the last few years. I appreciate the way these kids go out of their way to be positive role models for Tyler. Good luck Logan and Brett.

CAROLINAS GRIDIRON CLASSIC

We held the 2nd Annual Carolinas Gridiron Classic Bowl Game on Saturday at South Meck. It was so exciting to host 18 Pop Warner football teams for this special day. As you can imagine a lot of work goes into this event. I am very lucky to have such a helpful family and a set of friends that supported the game and provided their help. Also a HUGE thank you goes out to Coach James Martin and all the staff that made this possible at South Mecklenburg High School. Thanks also to the many area families that participated! We can’t wait until next year!

The South Charlotte (formerly Olde Providence) Braves coached by Rich Bucey & Doug Irwin won the 13-14U Babe Ruth Championship Tuesday November 1st. In order to reach this game they had to win in pool and bracket play against teams from Steele Creek, Dilworth, Park Sharon and Rock Hill.

The team wore pink jerseys in the semi-final game Sunday in recog-nition of Breast Cancer Awareness month. After solidly winning Sunday’s game 14-5 against the Rock Hill Tomahawks the team decided to keep with the pink jerseys for one more game, Tuesdays championship game against the Rock Hill Outlaws. Pink may be their color as the boys won the Cham-pionship game 9-2.

The Hurricanes 15U Baseball team was formed in 2003 from a coach pitch team out of Mint Hill Recreation Association. Since those early days, the team has grown by leaps and bounds, rising high in the national rankings. The team has traveled all across the Southeast and beyond in search of baseball perfection. As with the natural progression of any team over a seven year period, Nick Owens is the only original player remaining. Chandler Musselwhite and Jerrick Robbins joined the team in 2008 as they won the 12u USSSA State Championship. The re-mainder of the team jumped on board in 2009.

Among their many accomplishments are: a 25-2 record in 2010, losing only to the East Cobb Astros (#1 ranked team in nation), finishing 5th out of 96 teams at the Perfect Game World Wood Bat Championship, a #24 ranking in the nation by Travel Ball Select and qualifying and competing at the USSSA Elite 24 in 2008.

With their success, the Hurricanes have been invited to the 15u Perfect Game WWBA Championship in East Cobb, GA; the Perfect Game BCS championship in Ft. Meyers, Fl and various college showcase tournaments in the Carolina’s for 2011.

According to John Owens, the owner of the Hurricanes organization, team-work is the key to success. “The whole team leads; this is what makes them special. Pitchers don’t come off the mound until they touch their defense. This is not a “me” team. Hitters and runners don’t reach the dugout without being touched. This applies to success and/or failures. I’ve seen too many times a defense makes an outstanding play and the pitcher runs off the mound “as if they did their job” - that won’t happen with this team. Our pitcher goes directly to those players who protected them. This type of leadership makes the defense want to work harder for their pitcher and teammates.”

Good luck to the Hurricanes as they begin offseason training for a special 2011 season.

SOUTH CHARLOTTE SPORTS REPORT

The baseball term “hot stove” is affiliated with the time of year when those associated with America’s past time, whether it is players, managers, front office personnel and fans, discuss the summer game during the winter months. Even before the Boston Red Sox traded Babe Ruth to the New York

Yankees in 1920, folks sat around the hot stove to debate and discuss the sig-nificance of their team’s transactions.

Even though air conditioning and furnaces have replaced the iron stove as sources of heat, the term hot stove is still quite common in baseball vernac-ular. A place it is used frequently is to reference baseball banquets that take place during the off-season. The ban-quets are held to celebrate the game of baseball and to reward those in the game that contribute to its success.

On February 5th, 2011, The 4th An-nual Greater Charlotte Area Hot Stove League Dinner, hosted by Carolinas Baseball Center and The South Char-lotte Sports Report will be held at the 50,000 square foot Carolinas Baseball Center. This first class evening of en-tertainment will celebrate the growth of youth baseball and softball in the Greater Charlotte Community.

What started as a dream for Tripp Roakes, the founder and President of South Charlotte Sports Report turned into reality with guidance and sup-port from Jeff Schaefer, Founder of Carolinas Baseball Center. The two combined forces to host the inaugural Greater Charlotte Hot Stove League Dinner in January 2008. Year one found 180 baseball and softball en-

thusiasts gathered inside the original Carolinas Baseball Center on Westing-house Blvd. The crowd grew to 330 guests in 2009 and then reached 445 baseball and softball fans last January. The 2011 event is expected to sell out with a crowd of over 500 guests.

We are honored to bring one of the most successful baseball minds Char-lotte has ever met back to town this year. Coach Mike Shildt from the St. Louis Cardinals will deliver the key-note address for the 2011 Awards Din-ner. Shildt, a Charlotte native and winner of the 2010 Lou Pressuti Award for contributions to Charlotte baseball serves as the Director of The St. Louis Cardinals Spring Training Facility in Jupiter, FL. He also serves as the manager of the Johnson City Cardi-nals, a St. Louis minor league affiliate team. Shildt grew up around baseball, hanging out with The Charlotte O’s at the old Crockett Park where his moth-er Lib served as office manager.

Coach Shildt will return home to deliver a powerful message to the baseball players and their families in the community. In addition to Coach Shildt, many other current and for-mer major league baseball players are expected to attend the 2011 Greater Charlotte Area Hot Stove Dinner.

Twelve unique awards will be presented to area youth baseball and softball players on this special night. A special autograph session with cur-rent or former major and minor league baseball players will also be held prior to dinner. Vendors will display their products and one of Charlotte’s largest auctions for sports memorabilia and other exciting locally donated items will be held.

As part of the awards dinner, a col-lege scholarship award will be present-ed to the winner of the scholar athlete award.

We would like to invite the Greater Charlotte community to join us for a night of baseball on February 5th, 2011. With a new approach to the 2011 event, both new and veteran guests will enjoy the ticket pricing structure and lineup for the evening. Tickets to the 2011 Greater Charlotte Hot Stove League Dinner are only $40 for adults and $35 for students. Reserved group tables for eight are available for only $400 and include a special VIP guest at the ta-ble. A new Family Four Pack is being offered for early ticket purchases this year and included two adult and two student tickets for only $135.

KENZIE LANCASTER

“Soccer and football games were on different days so it worked out there as well. I also started going to Dynamic PS to get more specific training as a kicker and punter. When I was re-districted to Cuthbertson High School my junior year, I wanted to continue do-ing both. I think God’s hand was in this, because the soccer coach named at Cuthbertson was actually one of my kicking coaches at Dynamic PS , his name is Nel-son Garner. Nelson kicked in college and tried out for several NFL professional teams. He is still the soccer coach at Cuthbertson. Mike Roark was named the foot-ball coach at Cuthbertson and he was also very agree-able for me to continue participating in both sports, splitting practice time, etc. It has worked out very well and I thank both of them for making this happen.”

Last year, Adam was named Rocky River 2A All Conference Kicker and Punter and was named a finalist for the Roman Gabriel High School Student Athlete of the Year given by the Charlotte Touchdown Club. His field goal kicking range has extended out to 55 yards and his punts are traveling higher and farther than ever.

Obviously, Adam attributes much of his success to the years of soccer training.

“I think playing goalie for more than 10 years, later at a higher level, really gave me a strong leg when I started kicking a football. By repeatedly punting and drop-kicking the soccer ball in practice and 2-3 games a week it kept me in shape. When I started football, it was evident that I needed to work on the correct tech-nique for kicking a football. When I started playing football in the 10th grade at Weddington, I could kick-off approximately 50-55 yards. My longest field goal that season was 40 yards and due to the fact that we had an amazing punter, Kyle Bryant, I was not given that role at Weddington. Since moving to Cuthbert-son, my kick-offs this year have all been touchbacks with the exception of one, most are 65-70 yards. The

one that didn’t touchback, we had to kick off from the 25 yard line instead of the 40 due to a penalty.”

Adam has also moved his punting average up to 40 yards with a 4.2 hang time.

With the football season now over for the Cavaliers, Adam is hoping to land a college football opportunity.

“I plan to attend college although I’m not decided on my major at this point but leaning toward graphic design. I want to play football in college in hopes of possibly playing on a professional level one day. I at-tended various college kicking camps this past summer and presently I am being actively recruited by several schools.”

Adam may be late to the recruiting game, but he has plenty of family experience to draw from. His older sis-ter Katie was one of the top high school soccer players in the country a few years ago. Adam watched the of-fers pour in for Katie and he saw how hard she worked to make the very best decision. Katie had offers from many of the top schools in the country. She ended up signing to play for UNC Chapel Hill and now has two National Championship rings and three Atlantic Coast Conference Championship rings. Katie has been a huge influence on Adam and he has a very high level of respect for all she has accomplished.

Through his family’s relationship with UNC Cha-pel Hill and the soccer team, Adam has become good friends with the parents of one of Katie’s teammate. As luck would have it the friends are Brent and Dana Jones. Brent is a former NFL Pro Bowler and three time, Super Bowl champion tight end. Brent has pro-vided guidance for Adam as he makes the switch to full-time football player.

“He is a very nice man and has told me I could play anywhere I wanted to, right now. He asked me about UNC, however, at this time, UNC doesn’t need a kick-er/punter, the ones they have are awesome.”

In addition to having a very strong leg on his ath-

letic resume, Adam has built a wonderful academic transcript along the way. With a grade point average of 3.75 on a 4.0 scale, college coaches will be attracted to his commitment to the classroom. Adam is enrolled in several honors and Advanced Placement classes and he really enjoys the Science and Math classes, along with Art. Adam was a member of the Cuthbertson Princi-pal’s Council last year and is a member of the Union County Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council this year. He is also a member of the National Honor Soci-ety, National Art Honor Society, National High School Scholars Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Stu-dent Council and Spirit Club. Not bad for someone that plays two sports in one season!

Adam has also been involved in various community service projects.

“One of the most rewarding things that I have been involved in has been a mission trip this past summer to Hurricane, WV. This mission was called REACH. There were kids there from all over the nation and dur-ing the week, we worked on various homes to help re-pair them for the families. It was a great opportunity to help others and give back and very rewarding. I plan to continue to participate in these trips as much as pos-sible.”

Adam also made sure to comment on the role his parents have played in his life.

“I have to thank them for all they have done to sup-port both Katie and I during this time of their lives. They have made big sacrifices both with time and fi-nances.”

The South Charlotte Sports Report is pulling for the right college football opportunity to present itself for Adam Lutz. Whatever school ends up with Adam will have a dedicated student-athlete that will work hard to find success and help his team. Good Luck Adam.

Joseph Kloc is having a fan-tastic season kicking for the # 1 ranked Butler High School Football Team. Joseph also plays for the Bulldogs Soccer Team. The son of Jonathan and Christy Kloc has done well this year splitting his time between the two teams. With soccer now complete, Joseph hopes to win a state title in football. Following graduation in the spring, Jo-seph hopes to pursue football and then soccer in college.

How have you balanced soccer and football this fall?“During the soccer season I would start my Monday’s with soccer practice. The football team would watch film while I was at practice,

then when they go down to practice we would start practice with Kickoff. I would go down and do kickoffs for the kickoff team and for kickoff return, then I would return to soccer practice.”

“After soccer practice I re-turn to the stadium and kick for about 30 more minutes on my own. On Tuesday’s I would go to punt team and get a few punts in before our varsity soccer game that night. Wednesday’s are extra point field goal days and I started with Football. I would do extra points and field goals with the team and then go to soccer practice. After soccer practice I would go to the stadium and kick for about 30 minutes.”

“Thursday’s were the most packed days. I would go to team meal for soccer and hurry down to Thursday walk-throughs, if there was a home soccer game we started with kickoff and ended with extrapoint/field goal but if there was an away game we would have to hurry through all of special teams at the beginning of walk-throughs. Friday’s are game days and

seem to be the least stressful of them all.”

Describe how exciting it has been to kick for the defending state cham-pion football team?“It has been very exciting to play for the defending 4AA state champion football team. The expectations are very high and a lot of work goes into it. Expectations are there to repeat yet again this year and I have to be ready for the game to come down to me one day.”

Tell me about your foot-ball season? “So far this football season we have been a dominant force. At the beginning of the season, my only responsibil-ity was kickoffs. I worked hard to prove that I could take on more responsibili-ties and it paid off. I now do kickoffs and take all of the extra-points and field goals and I am the back up punter. I finished the regular sea-son with 44 touchbacks and 40 points and 5-7 on field goals. With our team be-ing so strong and blowing teams out I do not get many chances to take field goals

however, when we do, as long as we get good blocks, a good snap, and a good hold I am very accurate. I am planning on breaking 50 touchbacks hopefully within the first playoff game but definitely before the end of the playoffs.”

When did you start to kick a football and what led you down that path?“When I was in 6th grade I used to go to kicking camps with Mike Stricker, how-ever I didn’t play on a team until this year. I have always loved football and I figured I might as well try to see if I could make the team at Butler and earn the starting spot.”

What is your comfort zone for kicking distance on field goals?“My comfort zone for field goals is 55 and in. I am very accurate within 55 yards however I prefer it in the middle of the field.”

Do you have a certain routine or any supersti-tions?“My routine is to start with about 10 kickoffs then I move

to three extra points, then three 30 yard field goals from the right hash then three 37 yard field goals from the left has then three 42 yard field goals in the middle and finish with three 52 yard field goals in the middle.

What do you consider your top three athletic ac-complishments?“My top 3 athletic accom-plishments are being the captain for the varsity soccer team since 10th grade, being on the 4AA State Champi-onship football team, and finishing in 2nd place in my first ever kicking combine put on by Dynamic Sports sponsored by Under Ar-mour.”

How well do you perform in the classroom? “I hold a 3.2 GPA and am involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, We are Second and Fishing Club. I am also involved in Carmel Baptist Church and am part of High School Leadership and lead a middle school fuel group. I spent a week over the sum-mer working in Harmons, Jamaica on a mission trip.”

Results are in for the Octo-ber 9, 2010 SAT test. Students that prepared at NewPoint Learning Center averaged a 112.6 point increase in Math and a 117.7 point increase in Critical Reading. We have three students who scored over 1300 on Math and Criti-cal Reading while 9 students added 200 points to their to-tal score.

NewPoint Learning Cen-ter works with students one-to-one or in small groups (3 students per group) to pre-pare for the SAT/ACT exam. We start with a practice test to create a benchmark for all students to begin instruction. We provide strategies for Crit-ical Reading and Math that instill confidence in students taking the exam. We help stu-dents prepare to take the test for their first time, as well as those looking to refine their skills on perhaps their second, third or final time.

The fee for one-to-one tu-toring is $48 per hour. We do not have contracts and do not ask for money before your sessions begin. This af-fordable rate is the lowest in

the city while being tutored by some of the best teachers in the area. Yes, we did say teachers! All of our SAT/ACT instructors are teachers from

local schools. They are ex-perienced in the skills that standardized testing requires from the students and provide a knowledgeable source for

the students to rely upon. The instructors also provide ses-sion notes after each meeting to help parents and students monitor progress.

We welcome all students interested in increasing their SAT or ACT test scores to con-tact NewPoint Learning Cen-ter for further details.
