Deer Editor,

1 am taking this opportunity to inform your readers that I do notintend to let my name go forward as L.einster Orienteering Councilchairperson at the LOC AGM to be held this Autumn. I have now heldthis post for two years which I think is long enough. Next year Ipropose to concentrate on night courses and this will not leaveadequate time to devote to L.OCmatters.

The revamped LOC has now been in existence for four years and ismaking progress in several eoreas. It is important that someone comesforward who tn the ro l e of ch4irperson can give it a fresh impetus.rhe role of L.l)C cheirperson doel;. not have a tightly defined jobSP€!clf1cation and it. does not lend itself to e concise descriptionSuitable (or a letter such e s this. I em, of course, available toan.wer queries from any interested parties.

Orienteering depends on people c omt ng forward at club, regionaland national level to fill its many voluntary positions. I think it isimportant to demonstrate that once people have accepted e role for ecouple of yeers they ceo walk away from it and direct their energieselsewhere. If this is not seen to be so it is a mejor diSincentive topeople taking on these positions in the first place.

Lestly I would like to s ey that I hev e enjoyed my two yeers asLOC chairperson and t be t , in particular, I heve enjoyed the veriedconcects with orienteers throughout Irelend.

Yours faithfully.Oevid Wet t.

lOA VACANCY

Another active orienteeremigrating me!!lns that the post oflOA Environment Officer will bevacant from September. EoinRothery, who promoted theestablishment. ot the position andhas held it for the past eighteenmonths or so, is leaving- forAustr!!llta and seek& a replacement.

Anybody interested shouldconcoct Eo1n at 16 Vincent St.,SCR, Dublin 8 (01-544723) or Br1gidFlanagan, 38 The Olen, Woodpark,Dublin 16 (01-980928).

Apart from losing Eo1n, whoha$ be~n orienteering here as longas onyone can remember, the changeof environment officer will meanthat someone will have to go in offthe deep end, to some extent, withEnvironment Link, Gold EIA, and theother iG~ue6 affecting adventuresports. The FMC! are becoming veryactive in the area of environmentand have just launched an appealamong their members for a fightingfund of at least £15,000 initially.

'ROUTES' STILL A VAD...ABLE

Browsing through the book racksin The Great Outdoors recently Icame upon some copies of Eo1nRothery's book 'Routes' aboutorienteering techniques. The bookhas b~en diffl.cult to get forseveral years but a fresh supplywas unearthed in I::oin's attic and1S available to the first few tomake it to the Shops. Fantasticvalue for money, it is the onlyconprehensive attempt to describeorienteering for Irish readers (theSetanta Orienteers booklets onevent organisation and on startingor1enteering don't try to cover asmuch ground). The highlight of thebook for the beginner is theorienteering glossary, explainingall those esoteric terms like re-entrant, index contour, etc.

And get the author to autograph itbefore he goes to Australia!

I IRISH JUNIOR SQUAD TRAINING WEEKEND 198-9- J

The "lri,shO,-ienteering Squad represents the best of Irishjuniors based on their performances over the year. The aim ofthEl yearly +r ei n t ng weekend is not, to make us into worldchampions but as an opportuniy for juniors from around thecountry to get to k~ow each other and to benefit fromtecl1nical t.rainil~gat the same time. This ultimately helpsteam performftnces at international level, as the juniorswould be familiar with their teammates.June the 30th saw the start of yet another annual Junior SquadTr-et n t ng Weel<end. This year's event was held in Ardnabannon,0::.0. Down and was organis.ed and co-ordinat.ed by Charles Reidand Steven Linton with assistance on the days from Ted Feehan,Bobby O'Connor, Margaret Creedon end Bernard Creedon, theI.O.A. Junior Affairs Officer.

The map 'Jsed for the tra1ninB exercises was Tollymore FOl-estPark, a mfxec, steep, tecr, nical fores t with excellent,-,.mr,ab.ll'lty,ideal for t.r·aining.The exercises were varied andoftf:!nunusuel, ,"ci;tqL,ir'ing11 great deel of mental concentret ion. However, w.lth courses named like the "Battenburg Run" endbecause we didn't know precisely what the next exerciseent~iled everyone stayed interested in the ectivities.Most. of the tech'1iques were practised at a very deteiledlevel, e.g. accurate pace counting, intricete contour readingend prE,cie.ecotnpasswork. This helped us to fine-tune certeinereee of our O-technique which are often negl ected byampet t en t junior ori.c,mteers. The ettent ion to detail helpedeach person identify his or her own weaknesses. Competitionwas kept to a minumum although we were encouraged to timeourselves and trace lost time. The training ended with a funreley, the winning t.eam included Faye Pinker and Austin Whyte.

Activity in the forest was supplemented by a variety ofintE,resting lectures and talks given by Charles and Stevenabout the benefits of training, race preparation etc..Overall, the event ran very smoothly with no major disasters(except for John Feehan who suffered a sprained ankle). Thecomputer helped to maintain the efficiency, even if thespellings wel-e not always right (All is forgiven CharleiRead!). Thanks to .Jane Wilson for arranging e barbecue onSaturday evening. Credit 1s due to Bernerd, Bobby and Ted whodrove most of us from Cork and chauffeured everyone to theforest. And of course, thanks to the organisers, Charlie andSteven for a great weekend.

HARVESTER RELAYS '89

If you got an opportunity to run in Britaln's longest overnighto Relay, would you turn It down as a fanatical exercise fornocturnal lnsomniacs or would you be tempted to give it a try? What follows is an account of one such experience.

The 'Harvester' Is a seven person per team event starting at11.30 p.m. held close to mid-summer. The first 4 runnersnormally compete ln darkness. ThiS year Wimborne Orlenteersorganised the event in Ibsley & Rockford ln the New Forest.Brlgid & I were staying nearby ln Longleat. But flrst we had tocontend with an unusual problem i.e. lt you leave your caravanunoccupied overnight the s.tt e wa·rden explained that he wouldneed planning pe rmtssion for storage!. That aside we set offfor Ibsley.

Twisting and turning through a residential area lt soon becameobvious Why no pUbllC address was going to be allowed and therestrlction of no entr~ after 11- no dep~rtures before 9. Theslte itself was a tlattlsh gravelly elevated area of about 4acres, and was transformed lnto a colourful tent city by 700+orlenteers. We found the LOK patch, and through the activesupport of Julie and Ronan Cleary (3ROC) we jOined LOK tocompete ln the event. After brief introductlons it was down tothe serious business of O. This year there were 3 courses of70, 50 & 35km. We were to run the 35Km on a team headed by IanGulliver. Be~ore long it was pitCh dark and all that could beseen was some dartlng whlte 11ghts and the distant orange glowof Southampton.

On the east side could be seen a giant flOOdlit scoreboard typeconstructlon. The novel ldea (wh1ch was demonstrated every hourup to 11.00 p.m. ) was that the lncomlng runner would grab amap from this board and use thls as a Change-over baton.Immedlately afterwards an official would pullout the next mapfor that team and allow it to hang from the board (backwardsnaturally!) w1th the number Of the leg promlnently marked onthe back. You COUld therefore by slmple observatlon follow theprogress of the race. The system worked really well. Nearbywas a large marquee used for results display, sweat shop andsoup kitchen.

15 teams started the A course at 11.30, followed by 73 teams onthe B course 15mlns later and finally Ian with 14 other rivalson the stroke of mldnight. Ronan graCiously provlded me with ahigh tech halogen headlamp, a prevlew of the map (it had beenused some time previously), and a few words of encouragementthat made the 10 year gap from night 0 seem lrrelevant. I wasready for leg 2.

Ian was back 1n 47 mlns 1n 4th place to set me off into thedark obllvion. I knew I had a chance wnen I found the startingcontrol, and gradually I inched up to a Slow jog. The terraln

was mostly bracken with very few trees and by leg 2, I wasrunning flat out. r felt that I needed to leave the paths andgo direct if I was to help this unique AnglO-IriSh team. Didyou know that a re-entrant looks like a depression atnight ..you have to explore It to find out the difference. No reei orlenteer finds his true grit unt1l he t s lost ..thishappened going to controI 7. A major feat of tr1angulationUSing the propane powered beacon at the last control as areference solved that difficulty and got me back to the generalarea of the control. Within minutes, I was sending off leg 3hav1ng completed the 4km in 40 mins. Your run is not over untilyou have made sure that the next runner is adequately awake andfully understands Why you are calling him/her at this time Ofthe night? Sue and Adrian Pearle kept the team g01ng and Brlgidhad to don the headlamp for ieg 6 as it was not yet light. As Ifell asleep around this time ~ am not sure When She started, Wehad slipped to 12th position by the time that Graham Martindale(ex Tipp 0) started. A fine run of 74 m1ns for 8km left US in7th position.Julie ran a gOOd 3rd leg and helped LOK ladles to a 3rd place,Roxanne Whlte also helped on the 5th leg. Ronan ran a gOOdsixth 12 km leg for the LOK A team.On our way back that morning we mingled with the hordes ofAmericans at Stonehenge, and I th1nk the only thing we had incommon was a quasi Jet-lag for such is the after effect of theHarvester. We both agreed that this was a marvellousnever-to-be-m1ssed experience and is w1thout doubt one Of thebest Relays.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

A new orqantsation - ENVIRONffENT LlNK- h3Sbeen set up toco-ormnate environmental activities between outdoor groups SUC~las thelOA, FMCI, Irish Ramblers, An otqe, ICU (Canoeing), AFAS, IPpe (Peatl3ndConservation), and ewers. A number of meetings have been held, chaired byDermot Somers of the FMCI We decided to act on a number of issues, asfollows.

We opposed a proposal to locate a waterbus on Glendalough L<1h:-Upper, because it would be out of proportion in the landscape, of mepossible oollutton, of the fact that the area is a desiqnateo Nature reserveand because it would detract From the Wilderness value of the area

We expressed concern to the owners of the Uifey Head Bogarea, as t~ds IS a Site of International scientific Importance and Is Indanger of being disposed for either turf cutting or blanr.et coniferplantation.

A proposed golf course in Killarney National ParI<.was ooooseoas being against the spirit of a National Park - the santttseo safeenvironment of a golf course would be a stark contrast to the Wild beautvof the rest or Muc~.rossWoods.

ttemoerstno of Gold-EIA - the orqarusetton set liP to carry outan independent environment Impact assessment of gold mining in Mayo -was eopueo for by the lOA and I contributed a number of proposals on theGold-EIA scoolnq document prepared by the Scottish group of consultants, concerning geological. social, economic and political Issues. Donations toGold EIA are needed from individuals too and can be made to Dr. EmerColleran. 33 Beach Grove, oraomore, Co.Galway

lOA also supported FMCI in their opposttion to nyoroelectrtcschemes on a number of corrie lakes on tne Ring or kerrv. Coumloughra, under Carrauntoohtl nas been installed rora number of years featurlrlg ~road. built without planning permission. whlcn was washed away in astorm. It was repaired and got retrospective planning permtssion. Thedeveloper has been active again recently. excavating on the upper lakeswhich were not part of the planning permission. Across the road aboveGlenbeigh at Coumsaharn, FMCIsuccessruuy stopped an ESBproposal touse two lakes, but trns proposal may be submitted In modified form by aprivate developer. These schemes are attractive because it is cleanenergy, there are large ECgrants and the ESB is under a legal Obligation tobuy electr ic i ty generated pr Ivate ly. However, these schemes are gomgahead in wilderness areas, when the ESBhas a huge overcapacity evenwithout serious energy conservation measures. Donations to the FMCIEnvironmental Defence fund, which is being set up to fund Gold EIA andlegal costs relating to the hydropower schemes can be made to DermotSomers, Ballycullen, Ashford, Co.Wicklow.

ONCE UPON A TIO~rowsing through the archives recently I came across some iSSues

of a rnagaz t n e CoIled "I"ish Adventure Sports" from 1972 and' 73. Thisshort-lived venLure was edited by Ernie Lawrence, canoeist, who is nowalso involved in the Leinster Schools OA. The August '72 issue reportson events in long-ror~otten forests, but some familiar names do emerge.a n the results. The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland OC (rememberJan Peter Poulsen~) ran an event on April 30th in the Glen of Imaal ona three-colour map, breaking the run in Leinster of events on old mapsor on on e+c e Lour- new maps. Paget; McCormack won the Senior Mens racefrom Niall Rice O!lI1dGalin Dunlop. whil.e Maire Byrne (now ThornhiJ 1>won the ladies event f r om Wyn Deleney \McCormack) and Hazel Convery,Winning times were 06 minutes <nobody bothered ebout secondS then) forthe men and 83 {or the women.

Joss Lynam ran an event at Glendalough on May 14th on the first1rish four-colour mar. ("This event was t hougn t to be on the t oug hsidEl ... ". Not.hing changes!) Nj,all RJ.ce. leaving a sheep and a touristpron(! tn his we ka, won by 30 seconds from Paget Mc(;orrneck < 129.45 and130.151. Seell1 Rothery finished third in 137 minutes. Hazel Convery,Diar'l\ Li'lrp;e (who appeared as "L. Darge") and Key Bent were the leedingladies. De c Len O' Callaghan won the B course <Intermediate Men) andMonica Turley ,Nowlan>, M.Hickey and Maire Cregan <Walsh) were theleaders in lnlermed1e.te Women.

Robert Garrett ran a score event et Hollywood Olen on June 11thwhich was WO'1 by Sean I?othery with Niall Rice and Ted McGrath runnersup. Wyn Delaney, Hazel Convery a.nd IYlaire Cragen ,,11 featured 1n theWomans event and D8cJ~n O'CalJagh~n ~ga1n won the Intermediate Men.

Diana Large and Liem Convery ran en ev en i ng score event andbarbecue at Kilruddery. Nigel 8erk romped home with a 50 point margin,as 1n 1970. Paddy 0' Leary was 68cond and Seen Rothery third. i<uthLynam won the Senior Womens pvent with Ingrid Masterson second andNuala I?othery lhird. The r e po r t er states that Irish Orienteers hope torepeat this event each year.

Mt;!anwhile in Munster "a "'l.ight, fairhe:1red figure in runninggear" eppeared at the star·t. of the Reeks. Walk, confessing that he hadnever been on tha Reeks before. The bemused organisers eventually lethim off and Paget McCormack produced a new record of 3 hours 15minutes for the run. Willie Cunnin~h~m hdd the day berore run a poorlyattended Mountain Trial on the hille. west of Glencar. This was won byNiall Rjce with Neil Mather second.

John "Ieagher h~d Just produced a new two-colour map of Gle.ndav, near Millstreet, and ren an event on June 25th. "Unfortunately many ofthe entrants found t be going too hard. there were meny non-finishers,and Dub11ners dominated the Senior Mens results". Mike Lunt won in127. Joss Lynam seco,·,d 1n 151 and a young upstart celled Eoin Rotherywas third in 157. (Eo I n returned 1n May 1978 to win the IrishChampionships here by 52 seconds from Wally Young). In fact the 5-Day we thought we were goingto isn't on unLil next year, which i5 another day's work.

The competition was split into two 3-Day events, the first atBulle near Prlbourg (French speaking) and the second at Lugano in theSL~1Jth CTtalian e.peeki.ng), with German in between, so all tastesllil1guistic, cultural al1d ~astronomic) were c e t er ed for. Environmentalconsider-atf ons rneanl t he t the event was li.roited to 2000 ent.rants butwe squeezed in by the skin of our teeth (two months late) so that theycould .,r1(i another nat'lonal;ity to th61 list of participating countriesand another flag to the wall of the event centre.

Terrail'1 i'lnd weather varied throughout the week. Thunder, lightrling and 'torrentia I r a tn greeted us on the 50 mt nut e walk to thestar t <'It Schwybeq~ 01' Day J. The e er r e i n was pre-Alpine: steep forestwith some contour detsil, open pasture above 1400 metres. Typicalproblems werp route-choiceA in very steep sections of spurs/re-en~rents up to 250 metres high. Bad route-choice coupled withmt s Ln t er pr e t t ng tho. map on the cruc.ial third leg cost me time <23minute,.; for I. l kml ). It never struck me before how alike arewaterfalls and bridges on an O-map: but don't try crossing a Swiss;river in spate over a waterfall. None of US excelled t ode y , but it wasan interestinp; area wit.h good, physical courses. Course lengths allweek were short Ion p-,per) but. plenty long on t.he ground!

Day 2 at PJ.amont was a complete contrast. Plateau forest, likeDonadea crossed with Mullaghmeen. Beautifully runnable, not too steep, sunny and not too muddy. The navigation wa~ easier but the extra speedmeant several small errors.

Day 3 was at Les Alpettes, scene of the Individual race at the1981 World Championships. Back to pre-Alpine terrain, rain and mist.Heving had t.he old map to s t ud y didn't make erry difference when itcame down to it - the running and navigation were still verydemanding. A 70 minute w~lk each way to the assembly field plus a 50minute walk to the start, on top of an O-course made this the longestday. Again problems with long route choice: 30 minutes for leg 2 ofabout l. 5 k rn. At no time could you relax: nothing W!!lS easy in thisforest, and the rain, mud and elephant tracks didn't help. At thefinish we were all presented with Swiss Army knives: they would habeenuseful on the course for hacking through undergrowth.

Trudged back to Bulle where we were staying in the town nuclearbunker under a building site where the workers started their pneumaticdrills at 07.00 preCisely: so much for that lie-in. Still, thedecontamination rooms came in handy after a day in the forest.

A well-earned day of rest on the Thursday saw us travelling toLuganc, in the almost tropical south. The temperature on stepping fromthe air-c.onditioned train hit us like a blast from a furnace - evenTed's pipe wilted (withdrawal symptoms from St. Bruno had set in). Abus ride a la Fangio left US at the event centre where the food leftrouch to be desired, in contrast to Bulle.

5) AJAXAthleticHill Running andonenteenng ClubThe f or-.;ost.s here were Spanish chestnut and beech, with small

farms scattered throughout the upper regions: Ticino is actually themost ior-ested canion in Switzerland. Oays four and five at CapriascaOvest and Capr1ases Est shared a common fin1sh area and brought ushigh into the hills over Lugano. A beautiful mixture of runnableforesl, open land and contours made these races very enjoyable. TheF;un was a bit too hot, though, and shade was needed to reduce glarefr om the map. One problem area was a section of old barbed wire leftby the army in which many of U6 got entangled. In places it wasdi ..ricult. to tell up from down on the map: I was prepared for a reallytough slog up a mountain on one leg only to lind myself dropping intoa deep valley: reliel'! IRISH CHAMPS Peter Kernan and Deirdre NiChallanain scored yet anotherdouble championship win tor Ajax at Ravensdale, by small margIns of 20and 41 seconds respectively. Paddy O'Brien made a stalwart defence of hiSM35 title with second place to a young whippersnapper However, thlngswere different at the relays as we had pressure, gOOdterrain and goodplanning The M35's were beaten on the run in by 24 seconds by Southern 0,whl Ie the M21's saw the Curragh beaten at last but this time by Cork 0,with Liam O'Brlen running a bl Inder on Leg 3.

The la$t day, e t Tesserete (ee'9 map>, had a chasing start from08.00 am anct we were fortunate to have reasonbly early runs as it wasClI1C .. agal.n very warm. We were presented with frisbees inthe finish chute to add to our knives,

WORLD CHAMPS Deirdre NIChalianain and Orla Cooke duly Qualified Forthe Irish team at the trrals but the Ajax men contrived to finish 5th and6th. Peter Kernan was particularly unlucky, after winning day I by a largemargin, when he could only finish II th on the tecnnlcany easter day 2 andlost out to coirn o'Halloran by I minute on the oercentaqe countoack Thetrials were notable In that nearly every man who ever won a major Irishevent was there (only Peter James and our own Declan O'Callaghan weremissing) and that none of the SIX over 30's managed to make the team.

The whol,8 compet1tion wae enjoyabl.e <!I1,d well organised. CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS IN ORIENTEERING have been most benefic~al. Clubs who practise this reaped the~rrewards as shown in the results. Almost all clubs who got intothe top ten including Ann ~ay's (Winner of 0408) SLOW are knownto have regular bi-weekly tra~ning. An Appraisal of Loch Lomond '89

More than 100 IDA orlenteers together with about 60 of their NIOAcolleagues travelled to Scotland to compete 1n the bi-annual 6 DayWh1Ch was held in the Loch Lomond region. Whlle many took part inthe event as by way of a summer hol1days, almost all competitors whocame to the start~ng line had personal goals such as win!, achievegold, silver, finIsh, etc. With the large classes (more than 3000competltorsl and the usual mixture of phys~cally demanding terralnand complex nav~gation. achiev1ng one's goal was not easy.

* REALISTIC TARGETS:

You should sit down before you f11l In the entry form, anddecide what is right for you. If you are unable to tra1n DONTenter an A class. If you have just taken up the sport 1n thelast 3 months DONT enter an A class. It 1S a common m1stake tosee nOV1ces entering an A class and struggl~ng to fin~sh 1nt1mas up to 2~ hours every day •..the first couple of days arespent ~n coming to terms with the unfamiliar terrain resu1t~ngin frustrat10n and disappo1ntment ... that loses people to thesport.

The ObV10US questlon to be asked is:- Why did some Irlsh orienteer&appear to perform signifIcantly better that others (and presumablyget a hlgher sense of achIevement)? The followlng reflectIons arenot directed at H • D21E nor at the revellers ,rather they are asklngwhat did I (mr!ms average orienteer) learn from the experience andcan I do better the next time by puttlng some of this knowledge lntopract1ce. Could 1t be that there are a few significant factors? Iknow that thIS dISCUSS10n should and perhaps did take place at mostclubs' traInlng seSS10ns back in Spr1ng. What the results tell me isthat some clubs are not getting lt rIght.

A better approach is to settle for a B or C Class. B lnScotland offers good technical challenge for the average Irlshoriehteer. Which is more satisfying competing WIth the top 10~for a win or place or trailing ln at the bottom of the J1St?Most of us who were there know that John Keane (3ROC) was 3rd(MIOB) and that Raymond Finlay was 3rd (M35B) but do weremember who was 39th in H40? Of course we dont. We allbene1it from tanglble eVldence of ach1evement and theassociated recogn1tlon, not to mentlon the pr1zes.• MAPS:

You need to be totally familIar w1th maps of a sim1liarcomplex1ty. You cant turn up In Scotland, glance at the map atthe start and know 1nstInctively the correct approach to vastareas wlthout line 1eatures but conta1ning a multitude ofcontour detall. These map interpretation skills take time todevelop even when training and coaching is provided. Applyingthem In the compet1t1ve envlronment 01 the forest 1S a furtherreflnement. We are now fortunate to have some really good areasmapped espec1ally in Munster. The hlgh level of performance oftheir Junlors could well be related to the the spate ofexcellent West Cork maps.

Clubs have a responsibIl1ty to provide gUldance espec1ally tothe1r newer members when they are gOlng abroad to or1enteer.For maX1mum enJoyment and benetlt 1n the A and E classes oneshould be capable of achlevlng Gold standard.

* FORWARD TACTICAL PLANNING:

* TRAINlNG: -

Every general worth hIS salt has a plan of action to minimisehis weaknesses and maximise his strengths. Orienteers shoulddo likewlse. At a SlX Day only 4 days count in the overallresults. You should select the 4 areas that suit yourablllty ..• P1ck new maps rather that resurveys to reduce theadvantage to the home people .•.•Have a rest day between eachevent- be fresher than your opponents ...Use the other two daysto tra1n ... Avoid the slogs it enjoyment 1S your goal ...11 youare Incredlbly fit then go your hardest each day and drop yourweakest run.

You cant hope to do well in today's highly competitive worldwlthout preparat10n. For orienteer1ng that takes the form 01regular training. This should incorporate a mix of 0 techniquesand physical training. Club training officers should be raisingdlfferent 0 problems to enable a discussion to take place. Thisallows the lesser experienced to understand that there aremultiple approaches to 0 problems and from the practicesessions each person can figure out what is best for them.Even an indoor seSSlon studying previous Scottish maps would
