EXPLORING COMPUTER SCIENCE Exploring Computer Science (ECS) is new to Carroll County Schools this year. It is offered in the Technology Department and will satisfy the Technology Education graduation requirement. The course goal is to introduce students to the breadth of the field of computer science through an exploration of engaging and accessible topics. Rather than focusing the entire course on learning particular software tools or programming languages, the course is designed to focus on the conceptual ideas of computing and help students understand why certain tools or languages might be utilized to solve particular problems. The goal of Exploring Computer Science is to develop in students the computational practices of algorithm development, problem solving and programming within the context of problems that are relevant to the lives of today’s students. Student will be introduced to topics such as interface design, limits of computers, and societal and ethical issues. ECS was developed around a framework of both computer science content and computational practice. This combination of both content and practices provides students with a sense of what computer scientists do. ECS teaches the creative, collaborative, interdisciplinary, and problem-solving nature of computing with instructional materials that feature an inquiry-based approach to learning and teaching. There are three unifying themes to the lessons in the course. They are:

The creative nature of computing

Technology as a tool for solving problems

The relevance of computer science and its impact on society.

If you have questions about ECS email Matt Davis [email protected] or contact the Counseling Center.

Placement Testing For Dual Enrollment Students We highly recommend preparing for the placement tests. At the time of testing, you need to provide a completed enrollment application signed by your parent/guardian. If you have taken the SATs or ACTs, a 530+ SAT math or 480+ Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score or a 21+ ACT math, verbal or English score can exempt you for the math, reading and English placement tests. A math SAT score of 570+ or ACT 24+ will provide placement into pre-calculus. Although, those higher level math courses may still require math placement testing regardless of SAT or ACT scores. You will need to provide documentation of your scores. Walk-in placement testing is available. Exceptions exist for holidays and final exams. View the Testing Center's hours. Placement Testing Checklist:

o Call the Admissions office at 410-386-8430 before you arrive to verify that times have not changed. Walk-in placement testing hours are subject to change during holidays, heavy testing and exam times.

o Complete your enrollment application online 48 hours prior to testing. o Contact Disability Support Services at 410-386-8327 or 410-386-8329 for disability-related test

accommodations prior to testing. o Provide a photo ID (driver's license preferred) at the time of testing. o Arrive 15 minutes prior to test time and check-in with Admissions. Allow 2 1/2 to 3 hours to complete the

tests. ► Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) The 2018-2019 application is available at https://fafsa.ed.gov/. State deadlines vary. The Maryland state deadline is March 1st. All students are encouraged to apply. In order to be eligible for many types of financial aid, FAFSA needs to be submitted once a year. Federal aid includes grants, loans, and work-study while State aid includes grant and legislative scholarships. Most colleges require the FAFSA be filed prior to awarding many of their school scholarships. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ACADEMIC PLANNING: ►2017 - 2018 ACT / SAT Test Dates (Fee Waivers are available for students that qualify. See your counselor for more information.) Most students take the SAT and/or ACT during their Junior / Senior year in high school. At least half of all students take the test twice – in the spring of their Junior year and in the fall of their Senior year. Most students improve their score the second time around.

► 6 Tips for Taking Notes Taking notes can seem annoying to many students, but it’s also an important part of the learning process. Writing down important points can help clarify what you’re learning and enhance your ability to remember the information.

1. Don’t write everything down. Listen. Then write down the most important things that stand out to you. 2. Keep It Brief. Take very brief notes. Stick to bullet points or short sentences. You can go back later and fill in

details. If you get too detailed, the lecture can blow past you and you’ll have a ton of information about one topic, but missed everything else.

3. Be Accurate. Try to keep things as accurate as possible, but put them into your own words. If you’re quoting directly when taking notes, make sure you note that. You don’t want to come back later and think you came up with the elegant quote that you’ve lifted straight from the textbook. College professors take plagiarism very seriously, so this is a good habit to get into now.

4. Make It Relevant. It’s not always easy to do, but when possible, trim the fat. Only take notes on the details that are important to what you need to know. You don’t want to come back to your notes and be reading through irrelevant details that have nothing to do with the project, paper, or test that you’ve got coming up.

5. Rework Your Notes. Soon after you’ve taken the notes, go back and reorganize them. Clean them up so that the notes are of the most use to you. Don’t just recopy the notes you took, reorganize them and look for new connections. Also, don’t just scan them and highlight or underline. Some studies have shown that highlighting doesn’t help a whole lot as a method of learning. Some people find that it helps to have a system. Many find it useful to do bulleted lists with indents to make information easy to scan.

6. Review Your Notes. You are taking notes to use them. Come back to them every now and then to help imprint them in your memory. Review your notes with some frequency, even if it’s just for a short while.

► 6 Science-Backed Ways to Feel Happier in 5 Minutes or Less - Shake off those blues StemJobs.com

Everybody has bad days. But the good news is that when life gets you down, there are simple things you can do to feel happier instantly. We’ve all had those days where nothing goes right. Your alarm didn’t go off, your computer didn’t save your latest homework assignment, and you totally forgot about that chemistry test in fifth period — all at the same time. It’s days like this when it seems impossible to feel happy. But science says you’re wrong. Instead of reaching for your favorite comfort food, try these science-backed solutions to bring back your positive energy and genuinely feel happier.

1. Smile

Yes, it really is that simple — and it takes just seconds. Research done at Michigan State University found that employees who thought of positive thoughts, like an upcoming get-together with friends or a vacation, and smiled thanks to their daydream improved their mood and withdrew less. Even just the action of smiling can bring back good memories and make you feel good, according to a study published in Cognition and Emotion.

2. Inhale Your Favorite Scents Light a candle and take a deep breath. Feeling better already? That’s because your nose might be the key to making you feel happier when you’re getting stressed out. A study from Chemical Senses discovered that the scents of vanilla bean and clementine were both mood boosters, with the vanilla scent creating a more relaxed positive state and the clementine producing happy stimulation. 3. Give Your Pet a Pat

Just thinking about your beloved dog or cat can bring a smile to your face, and that’s totally backed by science. One study found that being a pet owner was linked to several benefits, including greater self-esteem, greater conscientiousness, and better well-being. To feel happier, simply going for a walk with your furry friend can make a huge difference.

4. Listen to Upbeat Music It’s no shocker that your favorite tunes can have an impact on your mood — just try it yourself! Research conducted at University of Missouri concluded that people who listen to cheery music (this study used Copland) while trying to feel happier are more successful than people who listen to more somber sounds (like Stravinsky). 5. Meditate

Those who meditate already can tell you about all the benefits, but science is backing their claims. According to Psychology Today, researchers at UCLA performed MRIs to scan the brains of long-time meditators against people who did not meditate. Those who did meditate were found to have larger brains than those who didn’t and were also better able to deal with stress.

6. Sit Up Straight Didn’t your mom always tell you good posture was important? She was right! A study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology found that people with good posture had an easier time thinking of positive traits about themselves, while those who were slumped over had an easier time recalling “hopeless, helpless, powerless, and negative” feelings. The study suggests that there is a strong connection between how we hold our bodies and our mood. So take a deep breath, sit up straight, and start to feel happier! Especially when the weather turns cold (it’s true — we all generally feel happier in the summer), it’s hard to keep yourself from feeling down. Try these simple tips to feel happier, and let us know what you do to shake off the blues in the comments! ► FREE Tax Preparation at HSP for all individuals and families with $54,000 GROSS Annual Income. Dear Friends and Neighbors,

The South Carroll High School Instrumental Boosters will be holding its annual Basket Bingo on March 17, 2018. This is

our biggest fundraising event of the year!

The Instrumental Boosters offer assistance to the instrumental music program at South Carroll by helping to finance items

that do not fit into the Carroll County school budget. Some of these items include instrument purchases, equipment, sheet

music/scores, as well as two scholarships for graduating South Carroll High School seniors.

In an effort to raise funds for this event, we are asking our members and local businesses for sponsorships in any of the

following forms:

Sponsor a game:

A full sponsorship is $150

A co-sponsorship is $75

Make a monetary donation of any amount

Donate a gift card or merchandise that can be used as basket fillers/prizes

Any and all donations are gratefully accepted and your business/family’s name will be listed in the program as a donor.

Tax deductible contributions payable to SCIB may be mailed to our Bingo Chairperson, Margo Miller at 1210 Longbow

Road, Mount Airy, MD 21771. Online donations are also accepted at www.cavmusic.com. All sponsorships must be

received by Monday, March 5, 2018.

SAVE THE DATE: March 17, 2018 and join us for an evening of fun!

With our sincerest thanks,
