South Carroll High School 1300 West Old Liberty Road Sykesville, Maryland, 21784-9397 March 2018 Dear Cavalier Families, As with many of you, the recent events at Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School in Parkland, Florida continue to be in our thoughts every day. These recent events bring so many things to mind, but in particular school safety and security. These same thoughts weigh on me every single day. Please know that the safety and security of our school and our students is our top priority. We work every day to make sure our building is secure and our students are safe. Once the school day begins, there is limited access to the school buildings, and everyone entering either the main building or the Career and Tech building must be “buzzed” in. All visitors must also be “buzzed” in at the Main Lobby entrance and are required to be checked in, if doing anything other than dropping off an item forgotten at home by a student. I know that some of our students, as they travel between our two buildings, become frustrated with having to be let in the building, and possibly wait a few minutes for this to happen. Please help them understand that while it may be frustrating, this is for their safety. We will continue to keep the students, staff, and families of the Stoneman Douglass students in our thoughts and prayers as they work through their grieving and healing process. While the weather at this point does not indicate it, spring is just around the corner. March 1 st means that spring sports try-outs have begun and scrimmages and games will begin soon! Best of luck to all students trying out for sports! As a reminder, in order to participate in ANY extra-curricular activity, students must be present for their full scheduled day and arrive on time. The only exception that may be considered is an approved medical appointment, but students should make every effort to attend school before and after their scheduled appointment. Our next parent conference night is scheduled for Thursday, March 8 th from 4:00 7:00 pm. Please contact the main office to schedule appointments with your student’s teachers. Please see the flyer enclosed within this newsletter about a special parent presentation also occurring that evening from 5:30 6:30 pm. Dear Cavalier Families,

As with many of you, the recent events at Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School in Parkland, Florida continue to be in our thoughts every day.

March 1st means that spring sports try-outs have begun and scrimmages and games will begin soon!

Our next parent conference night is scheduled for Thursday, March 8th from 4:00 – 7:00 pm. Please contact the main office to schedule appointments with your student’s teachers. Please see the flyer enclosed within this newsletter about a special parent presentation also occurring that evening from 5:30 – 6:30 pm.

Seniors received their information for ordering their caps, gowns and tassels for graduation on February 28th. Please review this information with your student to order the required apparel and many other items to commemorate this very special occasion. Balfour will be at South Carroll on March 6th and 7th during all lunch shifts to collect order forms. You can also order on line at their web site.

Easter comes early this year. As a result, schools and offices will be closed on Friday, March 30th and Monday, April 2nd.

meeting should be held before mid-April! 2) Student applies to CCC online at www.carrollcc.edu/appynow 3) Student takes Placement Tests if necessary.

a. Students with a 3.0 GPA may not need to take the English/ Reading portion of the test. b. Preparing for the placement tests is strongly encouraged. At the time of testing, you need to provide a

completed enrollment application signed by your parent/guardian. If you have taken the SATs or ACTs, a 530+ SAT math or 480+ Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score or a 21+ ACT math, verbal or English score can exempt you for the math, reading and English placement tests. A math SAT score of 570+ or ACT 24+ will provide placement into pre-calculus. Although, those higher level math courses may still require math placement testing regardless of SAT or ACT scores. You will need to provide documentation of your scores.

c. For students that need to take the Accuplacer: Walk-in placement testing is available. Exceptions exist for holidays and final exams. View the Testing

Center's hours.

Placement Testing Checklist: Call the Admissions office at 410-386-8430 before you arrive to verify that times have not

accommodations prior to testing. Provide a photo ID (driver's license preferred) at the time of testing. Arrive 15 minutes prior to test time and check-in with Admissions. Allow 2 1/2 to 3 hours to

complete the tests.

► How the Military can help pay for your Education (from Futures Magazine, experiencefutures.com)

Post-9/11 GI Bill – The most robust scholarship program and comprehensive education package since the original GI Bill of 1944. Veterans, including Reserve and Guard members, with at least 90 days of continuous service are eligible. Benefit amount is based on length of service. The GI Bill can be used to cover all public school in-state tuition and fees.

The College Fund Program – Can be added to benefits already received through the GI Bill for members of the Army, Marine Corps, and Navy. However, each service determines who qualifies for this program. The two basic requirements are that you have a High School Diploma and are enrolled in the GI Bill.

Tuition Assistance – Covers up to 100% of tuition or expenses for courses taken at accredited colleges, universities, junior colleges, or vocational schools. Can be used to complete anything from a Certificate Program to a Graduate Degree. Amount is based on criteria such as time remaining on your service contract.

Loan Repayment Program – The Army, Navy, and Air Force offer Loan Repayment Programs to help pay off college loans accrued prior to joining the military. Requirements differ by service branch. All programs are designed to help recent college graduates manage educational debt.

► So you have been waitlisted… What to do next:

Pat yourself on the back – you wouldn’t be waitlisted if you didn’t meet the basic admission requirements. Good job!

Decide if you really want to go to that particular school.

Write a letter to the admissions office. Advise them of any new achievements, awards, or anything else positive you can share. Emphasize how much you want to attend. Indicate that, if accepted, you WILL attend. (Of course, only if that is true!)

Request an interview.

Remember that most waitlist decisions aren’t made until after the May 1 deadline.

If you are accepted off a waitlist, congratulations! Notify the other school that you will not be attending. Then, of course, notify the wait-listed school that you will be. You will most likely lose your other deposit.

► What to Do If You Don't Get Accepted to College (From www.petersons.com and www.foxbusiness.com) It can be a shock to get a rejection letter instead of a college admission letter, especially when you know you're qualified. Competition for college admission has grown, due in large part to things like the increased emphasis on higher education and the simple fact that there are more people going to college. This often affects the process in ways you might not expect. In other words, what you think is a less competitive school may be harder to get in to than you realize. At any rate, it makes sense to be prepared. As colleges start sending out acceptance letters to hopeful high school seniors, some students may find themselves in the worst-case scenario: receiving only rejection letters. If a student is left holding nothing but rejection letters that doesn’t mean the college dream is over.

Page 6: South Carroll High School - Carroll County Public … to South Carroll High School with Project Linus Club in the ... (2 and 4 year) ... Students with a 3.0 GPA may not need to take

Find Out Why You Weren’t Admitted - The experts suggest students contact admissions offices to get a better understanding of why they were rejected and to find out if the school accepts appeals. Sometimes a student's record isn't complete, and the student can provide new information that maybe wasn't a part of the application.

Improve Your Credentials and Try Again - If you have your heart set on a particular school, consider re-applying for the following semester. Take the time off to learn new skills or improve test scores to show the admissions officers that you are a serious contender.

Check Out Schools With Rolling Admissions - Many higher education institutions have rolling admissions policies that start in the fall and continue through the summer. You can also look at colleges with late admissions.

Enroll in Your Local Community College - The experts agree that a community college can serve as a good

transition to a college atmosphere. The bright side? First off, you can save a lot of money. Another advantage is that most two-year colleges have arrangements with state schools, and will allow you to transfer as a junior when you're done.

Don’t Forget the Trade Schools - There are many quality trade and technical schools out there where students can

learn a very specific career-related field. From the construction trades to business programs to medical/health related fields and much more, it’s a great way to continue your education and build your resume.

Stay Positive - The ideal college planning process involves just that: planning. But things happen to affect your

college acceptance, and whatever you do, don't get discouraged. There are tons of options. If you commit to finding a solution, it may take a little work, but you'll be happily enrolled before you know it.

At least half of all students take the test twice – in the spring of their Junior year and in the fall of their Senior year. Most students improve their score the second time around.

What is a Peer Facilitator? A peer facilitator is a student leader who recognizes and intervenes in problems identified at school. Peer facilitators have been trained in conflict resolution and confidentiality and can help students with a variety of issues including: adjusting to high school, coping with family issues, dealing with peer conflicts, sorting out boyfriend/girlfriend issues, handling stress and anger, planning for future college and career goals, making good choices, feeling comfortable with themselves

How do I become a Peer Facilitator? Interested students may apply to be a peer facilitator late in their sophomore or junior year. Announcements will be made when applications become available. Students must complete an application and interview. All applicants will be screened with regard to grades, attendance, and discipline records. Students must have a 3.0 GPA or better. Students who have been repeatedly sent to administrators for discipline referrals or have less than 94% attendance may be disqualified. Because CCPS Peer Facilitators are representatives of their student body, they are expected to exhibit certain general characteristics including maturity, dependability, sensitivity, initiative, approachability, integrity, trustworthiness, among others. SOUTH CARROLL HIGH SCHOOL STAGELIGHTERS 1300 W. Old Liberty Rd, Sykesville MD 21784 Contact person: Caitlin Widner: [email protected] Press Release; Jekyll and Hyde The musical retelling of the classic story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, presented by South Carroll Stagelighters.

SYKESVILLE - In the final installment of their season of “Monsters, Mayhem, and the Macabre,” South Carroll Stagelighters will present Leslie Bricusse, and Frank Wildhorn’s Jekyll and Hyde in late April of 2018.

A testament to the duality of mankind, Jekyll and Hyde follows the journey of one man who

becomes two - both good and evil; and the journey of two women, one with all the money in the world, the other practically sleeping in the streets - who share a connection.

Overcome with grief due to the recent death of his father, Doctor Henry Jekyll creates a

formula to separate the good from evil in mankind; however, when the board of governors refuses to support his endeavors by giving him a test subject, Jekyll has no choice but to test the formula on himself. When the formula backfires, Jekyll splits his mind in two, creating the alternate personality Edward Hyde. In the battle to reclaim his mind, two women - one his supportive, upper-class fiancé, Emma Carew, and the other a wary, low-class dancer, Lucy Harris - find themselves falling in love with Jekyll; unaware of the dark personality he is hiding. With a gothic pop-rock score, and keep-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seats twists and turns, Jekyll and Hyde is a show designed to captivate all audiences.

“The music is absolutely beautiful, and Emma is such an amazing lady. I am so excited to be

part of this,” says senior Elizabeth Larsen. “I am so excited to get the chance to play [Henry] Jekyll, he has always been a dream role of mine,” writes junior Jack Merson. “It is so wonderful to be surrounded by such a talented cast and crew… I can’t wait to see what we create!” "I think it's going to be a great show," says senior and current Stage Manager, Natasha Acuña. "I'm glad that I get to end my senior year with Jekyll and Hyde."

Jekyll and Hyde is dark, haunting, and beautifully composed; it’s the kind of show that makes

you fall in love with theatre all over again. (Please note: due to the graphic content in certain scenes, we are placing a PG-13 rating on the show.) IMMEDIATE INFO: Jekyll and Hyde Written by Leslie Bricusse, score by Frank Wildhorn Composed for stage by Frank Wildhorn and Steve Cuden Presented with special permission of MTI shows; mtishows.com Directed by Caitlin Widner, assisted by Alyson Marks and Monika Wisner Technical Direction by Meghan Meyer Dates: April 13th and 20th at 7pm, and April 14th and 21st at 2pm and 7pm, South Carroll High School Auditorium Tickets: Adult Tickets are $12, Student tickets (with ID) are $10 at the door.
