South Campus Nature Trail Field Trip Programs

These programs offer teachers the opportunity to move their classrooms to the great outdoors. Pre-kindergarten through grade four students can take a field trip to the South Campus Nature Trail to unlock the mysteries and wonders of the natural world.

ECO-EXPLORERS

This is a 90-minute program for pre-school and kindergarten students. Students will experience the magic of nature by awakening their senses as they discover how and why living things are different. Eco-explorers will unlock the mystery behind who and what lives in the forest, the field and the wetland. By putting the pieces of the mystery together, eco-explorers will discover how a habitat survives.

Students will celebrate spring with one of the following themes: • Welcomebackbirds • Chorusingfrogs • Sights&soundsofspring • Burstingbuds • Bugs&beasties • Meetatree • EarthDayparty • Down&dirtywithwigglyworms

Cost: $7.00 per student

NATURE SLEUTH

This three-hour program for first- and second-grade students will explore the question:Doesbalancestillexistwhensomethingchangesthehabitat?Students will explore, investigate and discover the natural interactions of living and non-living things while hiking three different habitats on the South Campus Nature Trail. Interactive activities will help participants understand the delicate balance necessary for animal and plant survival.

Students will: • participateinafield-studyofthewetlandhabitat; • becomeawareofthefoodchain; • exploreanddiscoverwhatlivesinthesoil;and • participateinenvironmentalgames.

Cost: $10.00 per student

LAND OF SURVIVAL

This is a three-hour program for third- and fourth-grade students. Survival continues every day in the wild, and this course will explore the delicate balance needed for living things to survive.WhileexploringtheSouth Campus Nature Trail, students will discover and identify the environmental and man-made variables that threaten the survival of its inhabitants.

Students will: • discoverthegiftsofatree; • buildahumantree; • learnhowtohuntlikeamotherbear; • buildacompostpile;and • gainanunderstandingofhowtheycanaffectsurvival.

Cost: $10.00 per student

South Campus Nature Trail In-school Programs

These programs conveniently bring the wonders of the South Campus Nature Trail to any elementary classroom. In-school programs are designed to provide environmental enrichment in a fun, interactive way. Students will participate in demonstrations, interactive environmental games and hands-on discovery. Through program participation, students will come away with a desire to learn more about their natural world.

Eachofthefollowingprogramscanbeadaptedtoaspecificelementarygrade level.

AMAZING, INCREDIBLE INSECTS

Insects are everywhere. This course will put future entomologists in search of the good, the bad and the ugly. Students will learn how to identify an insect and discover how they eat, where they live and how insects benefit the world.

Students will: • buildabug; • eatlikeaninsect; • worklikeabee; • examineinsectspecimens; • discoverwhereinsectslive; • learnhowinsectsinfluenceourlives;and • discoverintegratedpestmanagement.

Amazing, Incredible Insects is also available as a field trip.

GARBOLOGY—WHAT’S IN YOUR TRASH CAN?

This course will excite students about garbage and recycling with an interactive classroom presentation. Precious natural resources are discarded every day. By taking a closer look at what’s in their trash can, students can develop a better understanding of why they need to actively reduce, reuse and recycle.

GREEN TEAM CHALLENGE— ENVIRONMENTAL GAMES

Take the Green Team Challenge and develop an awareness and appreciation for complex environmental interactions. Students will experience nature through fun, interactive environmental games that focus on nature, ecology and conservation. Taking the Green Team Challenge will help to enrich environmental awareness and provide students with a working knowledge of the environment.

Students will learn survival skills through habitat games, become aware of ecological principles and explore the interdependence between plants and animals.

TREEMENDOUS—THE GIFTS OF A TREE

Treesaren’tjustforclimbing.Theyinfluenceeveryaspectoflife—fromtheair we breathe to the water we drink and the cool breeze we feel. This course will help students develop an appreciation for the many gifts that trees have tooffer,aswellaswhatcanbedonetohelpmaketheEarthabetterplaceby saving a tree.

Students will: • identifytheenvironmentalvariablesneededfortreegrowth; • discoverthe10giftsofatree; • followatreethroughtheseasonsofitslife; • learnhowallthepartsofatreeworktogetherbybuildingatree; • discoverhowatreecanbeaneco-system;and • explorehowtosaveatree.

Fees for South Campus Nature Trail Elementary In-school Programs

Interactive Classroom Presentation This is a 45-minute classroom presentation designed for a maximum of two classrooms: $50 per presentation.

Interactive Large Group Presentation This is a 50-minute interactive presentation for three to five classrooms: $150perpresentation.

Small Group Stations Studentswillrotatethrough20-minutestations;eachstationhasamaximum capacity of one classroom.

Cost: • $200 threeconsecutivestations • $255 fourconsecutivestations • $320 fiveconsecutivestations • $650 all-day program: four morning stations and four afternoon stationsNote: There will be an additional charge for the above in-school programs if your location is more than 20 miles from CCAC’s South Campus.
