Mrs. Rogers grew up as one of four children of Pastor Charles Dart and his lovely wife, Naomi. Being a PK (“Pastor’s Kid”) there were many places she learned to call “home.” She graduated from Southwest Adventist College in Texas, and taught 6th grade at the White Memorial School in downtown Los Angeles before coming to SBJA. Her love of animals led her to volunteering for Rover Rescue in the South Bay. She is married to Mr. Kent Rogers, our English teacher and yearbook sponsor. N e w s l e t t e r Memory verses will accompany “rules” There will be a new scripture to learn each week When is the best time to commit something to memory? At eight years old -- after second grade, it’s all downhill! However, people have a much easier time during youth to store up important phrases, and scripture is something very valuable to retain in our memories. Each week there will be a scripture verse that accompanies The 55 Essentials, and this week it is “Encourage one another and build each other up.” (I Thess. 5:11) Writing the weekly verse on an index card, taping it to your car’s dashboard, and reviewing it to and from school will be more than enough to commit it to memory for parent and child! We’ll ask the children to recite the verses every Friday. Claps should be at least three seconds in length with the full part of both hands meeting in a manner that will give the appropriate clap volume. (We hope the humor in the specifics will serve to cement the idea in our student’s behavior!) Rule 4 During discussions, respect other students’ comments, opinions, and ideas. When possible, make statements like, “I agree with John, and I also feel that...” or “I disagree with Sarah. She made a good point, but I feel that...” or “I think Victor made an excellent observation, and it made me realize...” Rule 5 If you win or do well at something, do not brag. If you lose, do not show anger. Instead, say something like, “I really enjoyed the competition, and I look forward to playing you again,” or “Good game,” or don’t say anything at all. To show anger or sarcasm, such as “I wasn’t playing hard anyway,” or “You really aren’t that good,” shows weakness. Rule 6 If you are asked a question in conversation, you should ask a question in return. Me: “Did you have a nice week-end?” You: “Yes, I had a great time. My family and I went shopping. What about you? Did you have a nice weekend?” It is only polite to show others that you are just as interested in them as they are in you. Students have been assigned to “Houses” All SBJA students have been assigned to one of four houses: Ivins, Harty, McKenzie, or Penstock. The names were chosen by the faculty last year, and represent four former principals of SBJA: Lou Ivins, George Harty, L. Roo McKenzie, and Floyd Penstock. Students will sit with their “House” members each Friday during the chapel program, and the houses will compete for points resulting from positive behavior. We will soon have Captains and Prefects in place for house leadership.
