The Townships: The White man brought a new concept into Africa: The city. In search of new opportunities people from rural areas migrated into cities in huge numbers: many more than the cities could absorb. The majority of themhad to gather in improvised settlements outside the metropolitan area. These are known as Townships and today they host millions of people all across South Africa.
