At both meetngs there was a brainstorming session where we heard about ideas from many diferent women. PURPOSE of United Methodist Women

United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

Greetings All!

I can hardly believe that January 2020 is history! It was a very busy month as our some of our Dis-trict team attended a two-day training at the Life Enrichment Center in Leesburg on January 10-11. The guest speaker, Ebony Dias from the United Methodist Women National Office in New York in-spired us with her ideas about membership and ways to engage women in our church who are not currently members as well as ways to engage and inspire our current ones. Our District Local Offic-ers training was held on the 25th as well at Cape Coral First. One very important thing I learned at these meetings was we need to not only strive to get new members, but we should strive to get fresh ideas and encourage our present members to become more engaged in our local units and districts.

A former pastor of mine, Rev. Jeff Brinkman, writes a daily blog. He recently wrote about awareness, being present in the mo-ment and paying attention. He also said it is important. United Methodist Women has for the last 150 years developed programs that train women to be leaders. It is important work. Over the years the way women are trained has changed. If we want to attract new and possibly younger women while keeping the older women engaged, we should be aware of what they need, pay attention to how they communicate, and hope to accomplish in their relationships with others as well as become a presence in their lives. At both meetings there was a brainstorming session where we heard about ideas from many different women. For anyone who heard them, my hope is that you paid attention and became aware of something new and exciting to share with others in your units. It’s important if we want to keep thriving and passing on our work to future generations of women!

In closing, I would like to thank the women of Cape Coral First who welcomed us with open arms and provided a comfortable space for our training. I would also remind you that our next event is a Spiritual Day Apart on March 28 in Christ Venice UMC where we will hear about our “Methodist Family Traditions” which I know you will enjoy and come away feeling spiritually encouraged and uplifted!

Friendship UMW ladies enjoyed their Christmas luncheon on Decem-ber 13 at the home of Marie Lennox, Past President of South West District UMW. Ten ladies were in attendance sharing fellowship and good food. Luncheon was provided by Kathy Hanley, Connie Maus, Grace Chamberlain and Alice Sowles. The meal was Quiche Lorraine and Seafood Quiche, Mandarin Lettuce Salad, Croissants, Christmas cookies and Ambrosia Salad.

No gifts were exchanged but the ladies donated canned goods and money for the Friendship UMC Food Pantry. Friendship UMW meets the first Tuesday of the month from October through May. In 2019 our unit made 46 health kits for UMCOR, 14 bibs for Life Care Center in Punta Gorda and 157 port pads for the Port Charlotte Cancer Center. Submitted by Kathy Hanley

Friendship United Methodist Church, Punta Gorda

Our Good Shepherd UMW group, from North Ft. Myers organized a trip to Amazing Grace Tea House, at 106 S. 4th Avenue, in Wauchula, FL. Over twenty ladies from church went and had a delightful, delicious lunch.

This is part of Sherry White’s Ministry and the tea house is a part of them changing lives and providing an avenue to support the ministry of helping women break free from addictions and giving them an opportuni-ty for meaningful work experience. Lydia’s House is their home/program for women coming out of addic-tion and they serve at the tea house. If you look them up online, you’ll see the other ministries they have in Wauchula, also. This is a way to have a fun outing, good lunch and help others, besides. We encourage you to check it out. It is worth the drive. Beth Ferris
