Sound Energy

What is sound?

How is sound made? How does sound travel?

How does the rate of an object’s vibration create the pitch of a sound?

What is sound?

Sound is a vibrating disturbance in a material. Sound travels in waves. Different pitches of sound are created by waves of different lengths. Different levels of loudness (volume or amplitude) of sound are created by waves of different height.

Sound cannot travel where there is no substance. Sound can only travel through material, whether gas, liquid, or solid. We hear sounds, when vibrating air molecules bump into our eardrums.

Pitch

Pitch is the frequency of sound vibrations. Pitch is how high or low a sound is.

Higher pitch sounds are made with shorter sound waves.

Lower pitch sounds are made with longer sound waves.

Pitch is determined by wave length.

Volume

Volume is loudness of a sound.

Louder sound are made by sound waves with more height.

Softer sounds are made by sound waves with less height.

Volume is determined by wave height.

Pitch and Volume

Together, pitch and volume determine the how high or low and how loud or soft are the sounds we hear.

Pitch – wave length

Volume – wave height
