Introduction The South Sudan Orthopaedics and Trauma Society (SOTS) is a professional
association that brings together Orthopaedic surgeons, orthopaedic surgery
trainees, and diverse medical professionals with interest in the field. It is a not-for-
profit organisation that focuses on unifying these roles towards the common goal
of an enhanced patient care, healthcare professionals’ welfare, and transformed
lives. Our society considers access to orthopaedic care a basic human right. The
society is leading a strategic endeavour to place itself at the center of this ambitious
drive.
Background The Society was established in June 2021 as a brainchild of a small group of
orthopaedic surgeons. South Sudan emerged from a protracted conflict that lasted
about half a century. The conflict resulted in lack of basic infrastructure and
services; healthcare included. On gaining its independence in 2011, two foreign-
trained South Sudanese Orthopaedic surgeons returned to the Country and
formed the nucleus of the practice. The number increased to 10 in 2021, the group
that established the Society. This group was brought together by a common
understanding of the problem of orthopaedic care in the Country and the desire to
find ways to solve them. The South Sudan Orthopaedics and Trauma Society is a
registered charitable organisation in South Sudan.
