Course Planner Activity

The Goal of Today★ To start thinking more “big picture” about your courses

in High School★ To become more aware of your core and elective options

throughout high school★ To plan for whatever your goals are

○ To meet graduation requirements (Standard or Chancellors)○ To meet 4-year university admission requirements○ To plan courses related to your career goals

★ To see connections between what you take, how you perform now, and the options that will be open to you later

Career & College Pathway Programs

CCPs★ Career & College Pathway Programs aim to help better

prepare you for a career path○ Courses tied to a career industry○ Senior project built into the senior-level course○ Internship required (15-30 hours) - real-world experience

★ Glencoe has 5 CCPs:○ Arts, Communication & Information○ Business & Management○ Health Sciences○ Human Resources: Early Childhood Education○ Industrial & Engineering Systems

CCPs★ Students will be expected to plan for at least one CCP

during high school★ Look at your 4-Year Planning Tool to find electives

you’ve already taken, are planning to take, or are interested in taking.○ Do they fall under one or more CCPs? If so, continue on in that CCP!

★ It is very common for students to be taking classes that fall under multiple CCPs and that’s great!○ Helps you to explore○ You can continue in more than one CCP○ You don’t have to decide anything final now

CCPs★ Certain classes are REQUIRED Junior year and Senior year

○ Those are marked on the backside of your 4-year planning grid○ The rest of the electives in that area are related, and encouraged

★ Please do more exploring of the CCPs before forecasting time by using the course guide (available on the GHS website) and/or talking to current CCP teachers you have○ Also: CCP Fair at GHS on Friday, Feb 17!

Additional Career Exploration OpportunitiesAll of these will count toward your Career-Related Learning Experience (CRLE), required for your Career Credit

★ Career Day: Any grade level. 3 hours, usually at the job site. You hear from multiple related careers○ Come view options periodically in the counseling center!

★ Job Shadow: 11th/12th. 3-8 hours, on the job site with a person in that industry○ Allows you one-on-one time with the professional to ask questions and see

job first-hand

★ Internship: 11th/12th: 15-30 hours○ Occurs within your CCP most commonly, but open to all

★ College/Program/Military visits: Any grade level, in the counseling center or library throughout the year○ When colleges/programs come to Glencoe to share info about themselves

Community Service/Extracurriculars★ Academic Benefits: you will do better in school when you

are involved in something productive outside of school○ Sports, clubs, activities, volunteering, work, church

Look at eachgrade level

Consider your overall load★ Look at each grade level (11th, then 12th) at one time-

is your load too light or too heavy?★ Now consider your life outside of school:

○ Athletics/Activities/Clubs/Volunteering○ Family responsibilities○ Church

★ Make sure what you’re planning for is achievable for you★ Compare what you’re planning for in the future to what

you’re doing now - if it is considerably more rigorous, will you be able to maintain it?

Total up each grade level★ You should end up with 8 credits per school year

○ Add up your core from the front side for each grade (column)

○ Subtract that credit total from 8 and that is how much room you will for electives

○ Count non-credit courses (seminary, early release/late start) as .5 or 1.0 for the sake of planning

Important notes★ Each category will tell you how many credits are required

for that category○ When you’ve selected enough courses to meet the requirement, the

category will show a green check next to the name○ The bar at the top of that category will also be green

★ For electives, you have to count that on your own○ They are broken into too many categories for Course Planner to

calculate correctly○ You need 3.0 credits for Applied Arts/World Language/CTE○ You need 5.0 credits for Electives

Review & Finalize★ When you’ve selected your minimum of 24 credits, Review

and Finalize your plan

★ Review: make sure you have selected at least 24 credits and that all categories have a green check mark

★ Scan: see how your course plan prepares you for Career Programs, 2-year and 4-year Colleges
