The Cowgirls came away with three first team selec- tions and one honorable mention. Seniors Kristin and Rachel Wortman and junior Nicole Kludt were named first team all- league, while junior Toni Corwin was selected honorable men- tion. Kristin Wortman, a three- year varsity starter, racked up 89 kills, 16 block kills, 134 digs, and served 122 good serves, 15 of them aces, in her effort this year as an out- side hitter. Rachel Wortman, a three- year varsity starter and out- side hitter, ended the season with 60 kills, 14 block kills, 119 digs, 121 good serves, and eight aces. Kludt, a two-year starter and right-side hitter, tallied 19 block kills, 99 digs, and 144 good serves with 22 aces. Kludt also led her team in kills and was third in the IMC with 100. 20 YEARS AGO November 14, 1991 A group of local parents who want to bring soccer to Crook County High School took one big step toward that goal Monday night. The Crook County School Board, at its regular bi- monthly meeting, voted 4-0 to instruct the district’s budget committee “to pursue the possibility” of starting a soc- cer program at CCHS. If the plan is economically feasible, the program could get off the ground as early as fall 1992. The group’s pre- sentation was made at the board meet- ing by Dr. Bruce Williams, a soccer referee and former school director. He spoke to the board from a prepared statement that detailed the plan that could bring a full-scale, competitive varsity soccer teams to CCHS by 1994. Board director, John Lang made the motion to direct the budget committee to look into financing the program as part of the high school’s extracurricular activity funds. The vote was unani- mous at 4-0, with director Janet Roberts absent. However, it did meet with some opposition from direc- tor Wayne Kee, who said he wasn’t opposed to soccer, “but I’m not sure I’m ready to support or deny this. “You deserve due consid- eration. Your presentation here tonight was very good,” said Kee. “But we’ve got all these extracurricular activi- ties at the high school now that we have to ask our- selves which are the most important. Is soccer more important than cross coun- try?” 30 YEARS AGO November 17, 1981 Friday the 13th brought its share of good luck to Crook County after the Cowgirls eliminated Roosevelt 15-7, 12- 15, 15-10 to advance into the second round of the Girls’ AAA State Volleyball Playoffs at Oregon City High School Nov. 19-21. Powered by the front line play of DeAnn ‘Boom Boom’ Cain and Michele “In your face’ Hoppes, the Cowgirls welcomed the traveling Roughriders with a taste of Central Oregon volleyball. Cain initiated the spiking onslaught with a tremendous slam into the backcourt of Roosevelt, breaking their serve and setting the rhythm of the game. Jumping to a quick advan- tage, Crook County dominat- ed the early goings and appeared on their way to an easy victory when the lights went out. Not on the team, in the gymnasium. Working on a 6-4 lead, the Cowgirls found themselves in the dark when a power outage suddenly halted play. For nine minutes, players danced and sang to the pep band, keeping loose while waiting for the lights. When they returned, Sina Alacano took control at the service line and dished out three points for a 9-4 lead. The Cowgirls held on to win the opener 15-7. Central Oregonian www.centraloregonian.com November 18, 2011 • A13 Pendleton’s first baseman as he rounded the bag. Then he slid into second base with his cleats high, hitting Pendleton’s second baseman, causing what witnesses describe as a rhubarb. His father, Gene, was sit- ting in the stands and took exception to Barrow’s atti- tude on the play. The next Cowboy to the plate singled and Barrow rounded third base headed for home. “Mike was rounding third base and was looking to the outfield to pick up the ball,” Thompson said. “His dad just appeared out of nowhere and he reached out, I think to grab him, but he just kind of clotheslined him and shocked everyone in the crowd. It was so unexpected I’m not sure I remember the result. Whether he was out, or what happened after, that but it was definitely a big play in the playoff.” Barrow returned to the dugout and according to accounts said ‘don’t say any- thing. I was wrong.’ Barrow didn’t play the remainder of the game, which the Cowboys lost. Then he apologized in front of the entire church congre- gation on Sunday. He then wrote a letter of apology to the Central Oregonian stating “I would like to apologize for the unsportsmanl ike manner in which I acted on the baseball field Saturday, May 19. I feel that my actions may have given our town a bad name and I wish to take the blame for it, if so. I feel that my father was right in taking me from the game because I had been taught to, above all, be a good sport and to abide by the rules.” His senior year of high school he was listed at 135 pounds on the football roster. “I think they lied, as is tra- dition in football,” said Thompson. “He was a little guy, maybe 5-8 and 120 pounds.” However, in spite of his size, Barrow never backed down from a challenge. “He was a good student and a good athlete in every- thing that he did,” Bernard said. “I was a bat boy when Barrow played baseball,” said retired Crook County High School teacher Tim Huntley. “I remember him as a fiery competitor. Every time he went out on the field he would give it his all and you could tell that he enjoyed it. He was the kind of kid that we really looked up to. You know, the really elite athletes at Crook County at the time. Barrow was even better in college from what I under- stand.” Once in college, Barrow was an overachiever. He started much of his sopho- more season when the start- ing quarterback was injured. Then, during his junior and senior seasons, he was in a battle for the starting quar- terback job with Terry Durham, son of then Linfield head coach Paul Durham. Barrow eventually won the starting position and was quarterback in 1967 when Linfield upset University of Hawaii 15-13 in front of a crowd of more than 20,000 — still the largest crowd to ever see a Linfield game. “I had a lot of respect for him,” Thompson said. “He was a feisty little guy, and fiercely competitive. He did- n’t back down from anybody, but he also had character.” Huntley agreed that Barrow was a great athlete, but also believes that he was someone worth emulating. “Those were the days when 400 or 500 people watched a baseball game and the gyms were packed when they were playing,” added Huntley. “I think there were several of us at my age group who probably really looked up to him as a role model.” Barrow was an overachiev- er and a role model, and his teammates at Linfield have made sure that he will not be forgotten. Barrow: Continued from page A12 10 years ago: Cowgirls honored by IMC Father-and-son, Mike and Brandon Beers are only Prineville placers at Columbia River Circuit finals Lon Austin Central Oregonian In spite of missing several key competitor s, bareback riders stole the show at the Columbia River Circuit Finals. Defending world champion bareback rider Bobby Mote is still recovering from an injury, while Prineville’s Jason Haven’s was one of several bareback riders that chose to skip the finals, which were held Friday and Saturday in Redmond. Culver’s Brain Bain, who is ranked fifth in the world, had a score of 89 on his final ride to win the average at the two-day event. Bain finished with 252 points outdistancing Ryan Gray, 240, and Austin Foss, 238. With scores above 80 on each of his three rides, Bain looks ready to challenge for the world championship next month in Las Vegas, Nev. Also tuning up for the national finals were Brandon Beers and his team roping partner Jim Ross Cooper. The pair took third in the final go round of team roping with a time of 5.6 seconds. However, Beers was upstaged by his father, Mike, who currently competes only part time on the rodeo circuit. RODEO Ropers place at circuit finals Other first team all-league players included Eduardo Lopez, Matt Larreneta, Logan Riemhofer, and Zel Ray of Mountain View, Andrew Orlich, Jacob Fritz, and Michael Wilson from Summit, Aldy Larson of Bend, and Alex Mendez of Redmond. Crook County forward Jessie Loper was named to the girls first team, while defender Katie Brown was named to the second team, and mid-fielder Miranda Smith received honorable mention recognition. Bend’s Zoe Kilmer, Maryn Beutler, and Delaney Crook were all named to the first team along with Summit’s Kristen Parr, Rianna Aylward and Hayley Estopare. Mountain View was represented by McKayla Madison and Allie Cummins while Monika Kohler repre- sented Redmond on the first team.  All-league: Continued from page A12 See CIRCUIT FINALS, page A14 K elsi K emper Kelsi Kemper was a unanimous selec- tion to the all-tournament first team at the OSAA Class 4A State Volleyball Championship Nov. 11-12 at Lane Community College in Eugene.
