PETROLEUM SCHOOL

(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 33)There is an urgent need for petroleum

engineering library and study hall . Thepresent library is in a room which is alsoused for an office, seminar and lockerroom . A good technical library would bebeneficial to the industry of the state aswell as the students at the University . Atpresent many men engaged in petroleumwork throughout the state often consultour reference library in an effort to solvetheir problems .The University of Oklahoma should

lead all schools of the world in graduateresearch in petroleum engineering. Thiscan become a reality only when properfacilities arc provided . At present thegraduate student must set up his researchapparatus in the laboratory together withthe undergraduate students who are work-ing on routine projects . Scientific researchcannot be carried on successfully undersuch conditions . Each research projectshould be in an individual room wheretemperature and light conditions can becontrolled and the research apparatuswould be free from disturbance . At leastsix research rooms are needed . A cotn-inittee has been appointed to obtain in-dustrial fellowships to provide funds fordeserving students who desire to do ad-vanced work at the University . The var-ious companies will naturally be more in-terested in financing fellowships if they

November

are convinced the research is to be con-ducted under ideal conditions .

Last year 522 men froth the industry at-tended the Southwestern Gas MeasurementShort Course, a University-sponsored activ-ity. Many other similar educational servicecourses for the men of the industry couldbe conducted if floor space were available.

Samples of all oils purchased by theState Board of Public Affairs for the in-stitutions under its jurisdiction are testedin the University laboratories to determineif specifications are tnet . This work willbe expanded to include all lubricants andfuels purchased by the board as soon asbuilding facilities will permit .From time to time a piece of museum

type of equipment is received . Thereshould be a historical museum included inthe Petroleum Engineering building, tocontain the old documents, photographs, and equipment that has played such an im-portant part in the development of thepetroleum industry . Wall space should beprovided for paintings of the Oklahomanswho have been responsible for makingthis state a leader among the oil producingstates of the nation .The School of Petroleum Engineering,

University of Oklahoma, is knownthroughout the world for the high type ofeducational and research work that is be-ing done here . The school has been suc-cessful in the past because the facultyhave been untiring in their work, thealumni and other men of the industryhave co-operated to the fullest extent, andthe student body is made up of menwhose primary purpose is to obtain aneducation.

If advancements are to be made and thereputation of the School of Petroleum En-gineering is to be maintained, a suitablebuilding must be provided .Many of the schools of the North and

East, such as the Universities of Illinois,Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan, haverealized the importance of petroleum en-gineering education and have adoptedcourses of a specialized nature which are

Petroleum engineeringcourses at the University of Wisconsinare taught in this new $575,000 Me-chanical Engineering building .
